Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The effect of early nutrition and growth, and specifically the determination of the optimal time and rate of catch-up growth, could represent key factors in the comprehension of the mechanisms related to the risk of obesity in childhood or puberty.

Growth faltering attributed to inadequate provision of nutrition is common in infants born prematurely, and optimal postnatal growth is associated with improved clinical as well as neurodevelopmental outcomes. Initiation of parenteral nutrition in very low birth-weight preterm infants, using either individualized or standardized parenteral nutrition, is of paramount importance. Early initiation of adequate energy, protein, fat, and mineral intake is needed for nutritional transition from intrauterine to extrauterine life. Concomitant with parenteral nutrition, early initiation of trophic enteral feeding is recommended, primarily using the mother's own milk.

Pursuing this aim, this Special Issue will include manuscripts focused on approaches to the standardization of methodologies for the early evaluation of preterm infants in order to more effectively follow-up their early postnatal growth, body composition and early nutrition.
