Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Currently, the concepts of sustainability and circular economy have become the main keywords for decision-makers and researchers. It has directed the research areas towards identifying alternative materials, improving technologies against climate change and environmental pollution, considering socio-economic aspects, etc.

In transport engineering, sustainability can cover different aspects, including using waste or recycled materials as construction materials for building concrete and asphalt roads. Sustainability in transport engineering can also be achieved by improving the design of the whole pavement structure to increase durability and extend the pavement life against traffic loads and environmental conditions. To this end, using geosynthetics and various stabilisers in different pavement layer structures could be an effective and sustainable solution.

Discussion on the sustainability of the road infrastructures also covers optimising temperatures and emissions during road construction and service life, and pavement-tyre interfaces and rolling resistance of tyres, which directly affect fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. This could be associated with the analyses of road infrastructure's socio-economic and environmental impacts.

In addition, with increasing interest in automatic and intelligent systems to enhance the construction and maintenance of infrastructures, digital twins (DT)  and artificial intelligence (AI) are gaining popularity as cost-effective solutions to meet the requirements of the road construction industry.

This Special Issue focuses on sustainable techniques, approaches, and possible options for designing, constructing, and maintaining pavement structures. Manuscript submissions featuring original research and literature reviews in the areas mentioned as keywords below are encouraged.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Designs is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
