Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The growing quantitative importance of international migration in the world in the last half century has drawn researchers’ and policymakers’ attention to the economic consequences of international migration. For developed countries, the aging of the population has led to concern regarding the composition of the labor market and the future tax burden of social security. One solution to these problems is to welcome immigrants into these countries. Although those against open international migration argue that such openness creates a brain-drain problem and hurts economic growth, since it induces the emigration of skilled workers, those supporting such openness for developing countries argue that international migration raises the return of investment in human capital, which in turn induces a brain gain and benefits economic growth.

Among the considerable debates on the pros and cons of the openness of migration, policies are usually the main focus of these debates. Policies regarding the quantity and skills of migrants as well as the duration of their staying in their destination countries will affect the workforce composition of source and destination countries. While cross-border labor mobility affects the labor force, the cross-country movement of physical capital caused by remittances due to international migration also affects the accumulation of physical capital. These effects will in turn influence short-term and long-term economic growth for source and destination countries.

In this Special Issue, Economies is inviting researchers and academicians to submit their work to a Special Issue dedicated to “Migration and Economic Growth”. Authors are encouraged to submit original research that advances our understanding on the consequences of international migration, with a particular emphasis on economic growth. Some of the topics that this issue might address include, but are not limited to, the following: migration policies, migration and the sustainability of pension systems, skills of migrants, remittances, temporary versus permanent migration, and illegal migration. Given the interdisciplinary nature of the topic, papers may use a variety of methods and approaches, including theoretical analysis, modeling, and empirical analysis. This Special Issue welcomes both theoretical and empirical research, provided that the papers make a significant contribution to the literature.
