Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The fluctuations in electricity demand/consumption throughout the day have intensified the need for readily available fossil fuels to satisfy it. In fact, periods of high renewables availability that do not match demand can lead systems to shut down production when there are no storage options. The inability of the electricity sector, through demand, to fully exploit its scarce resources, especially those provided freely by green and natural resources, causes exacerbated economic inefficiencies. The consequences of off-peak and peak demand should be considered. Consequently, strategies with which to shift demand to exploit the production of intermittent green energy sources should be designed. The active participation of consumers is vital to leveraging renewable integration and replacing fossil fuels, namely natural gas. Therefore, the primary purpose of this Special Issue is to explore measures with which to provoke a mental state of willingness in consumers to shift their consumption towards periods of green resources availability, as well as replacing technologies powered by fossil fuels. In other words, how should consumers be empowered to provide the necessary flexibility for accommodating renewables?

This Special Issue aims to broadcast recent empirical and theoretical research regarding the role of energy demand/consumption on the integration of renewable energy sources and the cut-off of fossil fuels, which might include (but is not limited to) the following topics:

  • Demand response and time of consumption;
  • Policies and regulation;
  • Strategies of implementation by end users;
  • Fossil fuel replacement strategies;
  • Energy efficiency: planning, investment, and implementation;
  • Local energy communities;
  • Distributed generation;
  • Electricity tariffs and pricing schemes;
  • Smart metering and grids;
  • Internet of things.
