Dear Colleagues,
RNA viruses encode the information necessary to take over cellular metabolism and gene expression to produce progeny virions. In this process, the viral RNA genome plays a critical role first, with genes encoded within the RNA sequence, and second, when the RNA folds into higher-order structures to fulfill specific functions. Recent advances in the field have identified new mechanisms by which viral RNAs interact with the cellular host to hijack key cellular machineries and evade the host's immune responses. New regulatory elements have been discovered, and the relation of RNA structure with virus evolution is being uncovered. RNAs involved in previously uncharacterized host–virus interactions or which are part of the functional viral machinery hold great therapeutic potential.
Recent developments in viral RNA biology will be the topic of a Special Issue of Genes. We invite you to submit review articles, original papers, and short communications on viral RNA. These include, but are not limited to, omics, structural biology, molecular mechanisms, RNA biotechnology and diagnosis, RNA drug design, and RNA imaging. We look forward to your contributions.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Genes is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
