Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In Industry 5.0, machines are evolving from isolated automated tools into intelligent collaborators capable of interacting directly and safely with humans. Advanced mechanisms and robotic systems are increasingly equipped with sensing, learning, and decision-making capabilities, enabling adaptive behavior in dynamic and uncertain environments. Through continuous data acquisition and advanced analytics, these systems support real-time optimization, predictive maintenance, and cooperative task execution. Digitalization connects physical assets to intelligent computational platforms, creating integrated ecosystems in which humans and machines cooperate to enhance productivity, resilience, and sustainability.

This Special Issue aims to provide a rigorous scientific forum for the dissemination of cutting-edge research on intelligent mechanical systems within the context of modern industry. We welcome high-quality contributions addressing theoretical advances, computational methodologies, and experimental validations that deepen the understanding and practical implementation of advanced intelligent machines. Particular emphasis is placed on innovative system architectures, physics-based and data-driven modeling strategies, optimization techniques, and impactful industrial applications.

By fostering interdisciplinary dialog across intelligent machines, robotics, artificial intelligence, and digital manufacturing, this Special Issue seeks to consolidate emerging knowledge and accelerate technological innovation in this rapidly evolving field.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and comprehensive review papers are welcome. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following areas:

  • Cyber-physical systems in mechanical engineering;
  • Digital twin technologies;
  • Machine learning for mechanical systems;
  • Smart actuators and intelligent sensors;
  • Adaptive and reconfigurable machines;
  • Human–robot collaboration;
  • Predictive maintenance strategies;
  • AI-driven design optimization;
  • Intelligent control systems;
  • Mechatronic system integration;
  • Data-driven modeling of mechanical systems;
  • Smart manufacturing systems;
  • Sustainable and energy-efficient machines;
  • Fault diagnosis and health monitoring;
  • Ethics and safety in intelligent mechanical systems.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Machines is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
