Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Membrane separation, as an emerging water/wastewater treatment technology, has been widely used in urban-domestic-sewage treatment, water reuse, clean-water production, and other fields. However, the efficient and sustainable application of membrane technology is seriously challenged by membrane fouling, which leads to a sharp decline in membrane permeability, a significant increase in membrane filtration energy consumption, and a rapid shortening of membrane life. Membrane fouling can be described as a variety of influent components, including organic matter, inorganic matter, and biological pollutants, acting individually or jointly with the membrane materials to cover the membrane surface or block the membrane pore. Therefore, scientifically revealing, understanding, analyzing, and controlling fouling is of great significance for the development and application of membrane technology in the field of water/wastewater treatment.

This Special Issue aims to cover current developments and advances in membrane-fouling characterization and control in water/wastewater treatment, and original research articles and reviews are welcome, including, but not limited to:

  1. The impact of fouling formation and development on various membrane systems;
  2. The development of novel technologies for membrane-fouling characterization;
  3. The analysis of mechanisms for fouling in various membrane processes;
  4. The nanomaterials for membrane-fouling control;
  5. Membrane structure regulation for fouling control;
