Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Successfully decarbonizing the industrial sector is essential for reaching the target of low climate warming. The metallurgical industry, especially the iron and steel sector, is highly energy-intensive, emits significant amounts of greenhouse gases, and is currently facing the challenge of reducing emissions while coping with a continuously growing demand for metals. One promising approach is the utilization of metallurgical wastes in decarbonization efforts. Among all generated waste streams, slags are notable for their extensive generation and high exergy content in terms of thermal energy and material resources. This makes them a valuable resource with significant potential for recovery, with applications focusing on decarbonization strategies and carbon capture technologies.
In this regard, this Special Issue aims to present the latest advances and breakthroughs related to the use of slags in decarbonization pathways within the metallurgical industry. We welcome submissions focusing on the following topics: (1) heat recovery from the embedded energy in slags; (2) slag recycling for the civil engineering industry; (3) slag recycling for the production of fertilizer; (4) slag composition and properties in steelmaking net zero pathways; (5) extraction of valuable constituents from waste slags; (6) carbon sequestration through slag carbonation; (7) life cycle assessment of ferrous and non-ferrous slags; and (8) optimization of handling and management strategies for slags.
By compiling diverse and high-quality contributions from researchers and industry professionals, this Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state and future potential of slag utilization in decarbonization initiatives.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Minerals is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
