Dear Colleagues,

As the demand for effective treatments for diabetes continues to rise, stem cell-based approaches hold immense promise for providing a long-term solution to the challenges associated with islet replacement. This Special Issue aims to bring together cutting-edge research, perspectives, and reviews to foster a comprehensive understanding of the advancements, challenges, and future directions in this rapidly evolving field. This Special Issue will provide a comprehensive platform for researchers, clinicians, and policymakers to access the latest advancements and breakthroughs in the field of stem cells for islet replacement therapy. By highlighting the challenges, opportunities, and potential solutions, this collection of articles will significantly contribute to the advancement of this vital area of regenerative medicine and its translation into clinical practice. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Directed differentiation protocols to generate functional islets from different types of stem cells;
  • Bioengineering approaches to optimize the 2D or 3D microenvironment for islet replacement;
  • Genetic engineering and genome editing tools for improving safety and efficacy;
  • Biomaterials and scaffolds for encapsulation and protection of islet-like cells;
  • Preclinical and clinical studies evaluating the therapeutic potential of stem cell-derived islets;
  • Immunomodulation strategies to prevent graft rejection and improve long-term engraftment;
  • Comparative studies between and sites for islet transplantation.

We believe that by dedicating focused attention to stem cells for islet replacement therapy, we can accelerate progress in this field and ultimately improve the lives of patients living with diabetes.
