Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Distributed optical fiber sensing has evolved into a mature technology, transforming a standard communication fiber into a continuous, real-time sensor over tens of kilometers. Its established applications include: leak detection and integrity monitoring in pipelines and wellbores; traffic monitoring on railways and roads; structural health assessment of bridges and tunnels; perimeter and border security; and the observation of seismic waves and landslide movement. As these applications reach maturity, a central question emerges: what other applications can distributed fiber sensing address? And what needs to be changed in current technologies to unlock the potential for these new applications? Finally, in an era of increasingly powerful data-driven methods, can artificial intelligence reveal information hidden within distributed sensing data that current analysis overlooks?
This Special Issue invites contributions that answer these questions in two complementary directions. The first concerns new applications that bring distributed sensing beyond its current reach, leveraging its large spatial coverage and scale to serve fields that have yet to benefit from it. The second is advances in the interpretation of distributed measurements, since data acquired for one purpose may conceal information we are not yet looking at, and richer processing can unlock insights beyond the original intent. Novel technologies that broaden overall capability, whether by extending performance or by enabling applications inconceivable with current systems, are likewise welcome.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Photonics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
