Dear Colleagues,
The study of electrostatic coherent structures in planetary magnetospheres is of great interest to the scientific community due to their significant impact on the dynamics and evolution of planetary plasma environments. These structures, which include electron holes, double layers, and solitary waves, play a crucial role in the transport of energy and momentum, as well as in the acceleration and heating of particles within magnetospheres. Observations from various planetary missions, like Geotail, Polar, Cluster, THEMIS, MMS, Wind, Van Allan Probes, MAVEN, PVO, Parker Solar Probe etc., theoretical models, and numerical simulations have provided valuable insights into the formation, properties, and effects of these structures within different planetary environments as well as in the solar wind.
This Special Issue aims to bring together researchers from diverse disciplines to discuss the latest advancements in the study of electrostatic coherent structures in planetary magnetospheres. Contributions are invited on topics such as the identification and characterization of coherent structures in planetary magnetospheres, the underlying physical mechanisms driving their formation, and their role in shaping the dynamics of planetary plasma environments. Both observational studies and theoretical and numerical simulations are welcome to contribute to a better understanding of these intriguing phenomena.
