Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

As an indispensable part of the air–space–ground–sea/water integrated network, data links between various devices in the ocean and between surface and underwater devices all require underwater communication in their applications in military and civilian areas. As the most common underwater wireless communication, acoustic waves cannot meet the increasing demands of underwater communication due to their characteristics of low rate, high delay, and poor security. Although traditional radio frequency communication can achieve a transmission rate higher than that of sound wave communication underwater, the huge attenuation makes it impossible to achieve long-distance transmission. The small attenuation of blue-green visible light in water lays the foundation for the development of underwater visible light communication (VLC). At the same time, compared with acoustic wave and radio frequency communication, underwater VLC has low cost, high speed, strong anti-interference ability and high security, and has thus become the focus of scientific research and industrial focus in various countries. Several key research challenges have emerged within the underwater VLC domain, including (but not limited to):

  • End-to-end underwater VLC infrastructure;
  • Machine-to-machine links;
  • Underwater drone-to-drone, drone-to-infrastructure links;
  • Underwater environment detection;
  • Optical wireless communication cybersecurity protocol;
  • Underwater sensing network channel modeling and measurement;
  • Underwater sensing network application and new scenario.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
