The chemical composition of natural products is complex and the investigation of bioactivities of compounds of interest demands their isolation. S. terebinthifolia Raddi is a tree belonging to the Anacardiaceae family and is used in Brazilian folk medicine; its fruit (pink peppers) are used in cooking and its bark in phytomedicine. Extracts of other parts of this plant contain a plethora of components and merit further studies. Countercurrent chromatography (CCC) is frequently employed with natural products due to the high sample recovery rate. The objective of this work was to determine the best solvent system (SS) to fraction the ethanol extracts of leaves, flowers and fruit of Schinus terebinthifolia by CCC and isolate compounds of interest and elucidate their structures through nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectrometry (MS). In addition, antiproliferative, potential cell regeneration and antioxidant activities of the fractions of interest were evaluated. In the present work, three compounds were isolated; two were identified as anacardic acids [(6-(8′, 11′-heptadecadienyl)-salicylic acid and 6-(8′-heptadecenyl)-salicylic acid], as well as (Z)-masticadienoic acid. These compounds showed antiproliferative and potential cell regeneration activities as well as varying degrees of antioxidant capacity. Although these compounds present potential therapeutic activity, more studies are necessary to confirm their safety. Full article

Hybridization is considered an important process in plant evolution, especially in the origins of domesticated plant taxa, with many crop species being the result of interspecific hybridization events. There are several unidentified lineages of Spondias in the northeastern region of Brazil known only by vernacular names such as ‘cajaguela’, ‘umbu-cajá’, and ‘umbuguela’. These taxa are often regarded as being of hybrid origin, based on supposedly intermediate morphological features. However, the morphology-based hypotheses of hybrid origin and parentage of these Spondias taxa remain largely untested experimentally. We collected 355 accessions of Spondias, including S. bahiensis, other putative hybrid taxa, and both native (S. mombin, S. tuberosa, and S. venulosa) and introduced (S. purpurea) species believed to be the parental taxa. We then reconstructed phylogenies of plastid and nuclear markers and haplotype networks in order to ascertain the genetic affinities between putative hybrids and other Spondias species. All taxa with intermediate morphology were confirmed as hybrids between their putative parental species. All hybrids involving S. purpurea (native to Mexico) appear to be F1 generation. The recently described S. bahiensis is shown to have originated from hybridization between S. tuberosa and S. venulosa. The other ‘umbu-cajá’ taxon found in Northeastern Brazil is revealed to be the result of hybridization between S. mombin and S. tuberosa. Both the northern ‘umbu-cajá’ taxon and S. bahiensis appear to be well-established hybrid lineages and not early-generation hybrids. Additionally, some introgression and backcrossing processes between S. bahiensis and one of the parents was also observed. Our findings confirm the hybrid origins of the domesticated Spondias taxa found in Northeastern Brazil. Full article

Fecal retention is a distinctive reproductive strategy in certain leaf beetles, which enables females to use accumulated fecal material to protect their eggs and enhance offspring survival. The adult flea beetle Asiophrida xanthospilota (Baly, 1881) is a specialist herbivore that feeds on the leaves of Cotinus coggygria Scop. (Anacardiaceae). Using light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and micro-computed tomography, we described and illustrated the hindgut anatomy of adult female A. xanthospilota during the pre-mated and post-mated reproductive phases. We further examined the physiological changes in the hindgut associated with fecal retention, and assessed hindgut muscle activity across these two reproductive stages. The hindgut of adult A. xanthospilota consists of three regions: ileum, colon, and rectum. The ileum is a thin, straight or coiled, tube enclosed by malpighian tubules and supported by circular and longitudinal muscles. The colon lies between the ileum and rectum, possesses a chitinized cuticle, and is externally covered with tracheae and tracheoles. A rectal valve separates the colon from the rectum, which forms the posterior end of the alimentary canal and is characterized by intimal spines and robust circular muscles. During the post-mated phase, fecal retention causes pronounced dilation of the hindgut, substantially increasing the volume occupied by food remnants. Electromyographic recordings revealed high hindgut muscle activity in pre-mated females, characterized by short and variable bursts, whereas post-mated females exhibited reduced activity with longer and more sustained bursts. The functional implications of these specialized structural features are discussed. Overall, these morphological and physiological adaptations enhance the fecal retention strategy by increasing fecal capacity, regulating hindgut motility, and enabling the formation of a protective fecal case around the egg mass. Cotinus coggygria Scop., a member of the Anacardiaceae family, is known for its antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and antitumor properties. In the present study, the ethyl acetate/water leaf extract of C. coggygria was evaluated for antioxidant and anticancer activities. The extract exhibited strong radical-scavenging potential, effectively neutralizing DPPH, ABTS•+, and superoxide radicals in a concentration-dependent manner. The cytotoxic effects of the extract on human hepatocellular carcinoma HepG2 cells were also investigated. Flow cytometry revealed significant S-phase cell cycle arrest, while fluorescent microscopy and annexin V-FITC/PI staining demonstrated induction of apoptosis. DNA damage was confirmed by alkaline comet assay. Molecular docking was used to evaluate the binding affinity and inhibitory potential of penta-O-galloyl-β-D-glucose, a representative of gallotannins found in C. coggygria extracts, towards cyclin-dependent kinase 2 and checkpoint kinase 1. A high inhibition ability was demonstrated, which could explain the observed cell cycle block. Collectively, these findings suggest that C. coggygria extract exerts strong antioxidant capacity and selective antiproliferative activity in HepG2 cells. The anticancer effects of C. coggygria extract were associated with DNA damage, cell cycle arrest, disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential, and apoptosis induction. The results show the potential of the herb as a natural therapeutic agent for hepatocellular carcinoma. Full article

Cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.), native to northeastern Brazil, holds significant socioeconomic value, but its cultivation is limited by salinity, which is common in semiarid regions. This study evaluates foliar magnesium (Mg) application as a strategy to mitigate salinity stress in cashew seedlings. A greenhouse experiment was conducted with two genotypes (CCP 76 and AT01), two irrigation salinity levels (0.5 and 2.5 dS m−1), and three Mg doses (0, 1, and 2 mL L−1). Salinity reduced growth, physiological parameters, and stomatal conductance. Foliar Mg application, particularly at 1 mL L−1, alleviated these effects by increasing root dry mass, stomatal conductance, internal CO2 concentration, and intrinsic water-use efficiency, especially in genotype AT01. The 2 mL L−1 dose showed inconsistent responses, suggesting toxicity. Overall, Mg application mitigates salinity effects in cashew, with efficiency dependent on genotype and dose, and AT01 demonstrating greater tolerance. Full article

The aim of this study was to assess phenotypic variation and its implications for genetic diversity in natural populations of Spondias tuberosa. Fruits were harvested from 38 mother plants from three natural populations, and the physical traits of the fruits, endocarps, and physiological quality of the seeds were evaluated in a completely randomized design with four replicates of 25 fruits per genotype. The data were subjected to analysis of variance, and the means were grouped via the Scott–Knott method. Genetic diversity was evaluated via UPGMA and Tocher clustering methods, which are based on the Mahalanobis distance (D2) and canonical variables, whereas the relative importance of the characters was evaluated via the Singh method. The results indicated high phenotypic variability, with fruit length was the main discriminant trait among genotypes. The groupings formed six (UPGMA) and 12 groups (Tocher), indicating greater divergence within populations. The analysis of phenotypic data provides a solid basis for understanding the ecological dynamics of and supporting sustainable management practices for S. tuberosa, in line with bioeconomic objectives. This study highlights the importance of preserving phenotypic variability in populations, which is essential for the adaptation of species to environmental changes and for improving local bioeconomies. Skin aging involves oxidative stress, inflammation, and hyperpigmentation, prompting growing interest in plant-based treatments. Pistacia lentiscus L. and Pistacia atlantica Desf. (Anacardiaceae), North African pharmacopoeia species with recognized phytotherapeutic and cosmeceutical properties, were analyzed to elucidate these biological activities through their phytochemical composition and in vitro antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-hyperpigmentation potentials. Leaves were successively extracted with hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol. The methanolic leaf extract of P. atlantica exhibited the highest total phenolic content (430.28 ± 0.01 mg GAE/g), while P. lentiscus showed the highest flavonoid content (230.00 ± 0.01 mg QE/g). LC–MS/MS analysis identified thirteen major phenolic compounds, including methyl gallate and myricitrin. Biological assays revealed that P. lentiscus exhibited the strongest antioxidant activity (IC50 = 5.19 ± 0.01 µg/mL) and the highest ferric-reducing power, whereas P. atlantica showed strong inhibition of protein denaturation (139.10 ± 0.55 µg/mL). Both extracts displayed potent anti-lipoxygenase activity (IC50 = 22.53 ± 0.05 and 22.67 ± 0.04 µg/mL, respectively), as well as anti-tyrosinase effects (IC50 = 39.80 ± 0.08 and 38.25 ± 0.02 µg/mL, respectively). Altogether, these findings underscore the cosmetic potential of these Pistacia species and support their use as valuable raw materials for the development of dermatological treatments. Full article

Background: Medicinal plants continue to offer a promising source of novel bioactive compounds for cancer therapy due to their affordability, biocompatibility, and low toxicity. Rhus punjabensis Stewart, an ethnomedicinal species from the family Anacardiaceae, has long been used in the traditional medicine of northern Pakistan to treat inflammatory, hepatic, and infectious diseases. However, its phytochemical composition and anticancer potential remain largely unexplored. Methods: This study employed a bioactivity-guided isolation strategy to identify and characterize anticancer constituents from R. punjabensis leaves. The plant material was sequentially fractionated using solvents of increasing polarity, followed by purification via column chromatography. Each fraction and purified compound was evaluated using antioxidant (DPPH, total antioxidant capacity, and total reducing power) and cytotoxic assays, including brine shrimp lethality, Sulfo-rhodamine B (SRB) against five human cancer cell lines, protein kinase inhibition, and NF-κB chemo-preventive assays. Results: Comparative analysis of spectral data (UV, 1D/2D NMR, and ESI-MS) led to the identification of three triterpenoid compounds—Lupeol, Cycloartenol, and β-sitosterol—reported for the first time from R. punjabensis. Among them, Lupeol displayed the most potent cytotoxicity against DU-145 prostate (IC50 = 11.2 ± 1.2 μg/mL) and HL-60 leukemia (IC50 = 15.2 ± 1.1 μg/mL) cell lines and showed significant NF-κB inhibitory activity (IC50 = 19.4 ± 1.1 μg/mL), indicating its chemo-preventive potential. Cycloartenoland β-sitosterol exhibited moderate antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Conclusion: The findings validate the ethnopharmacological use of R. punjabensis and confirm it as a new source of triterpenoids with notable anticancer activity. This study provides the first comprehensive account of its bioactive metabolites, reinforcing the significance of bioactivity-directed isolation as a powerful approach for discovering natural anticancer agents. Further in vivo and mechanistic evaluations are warranted to establish their therapeutic efficacy and safety profiles. Full article

For the Choerospondias axillaris (Roxb.) B.L.Burtt & A.W.Hill, a significant economic tree in the Anacardiaceae family with industrial, medicinal, and ecological value, the genome size remains unreported. Here, we optimized the flow cytometry-based method for ploidy analysis, finding that WPB lysis solution proved to be the most effective. Analysis of 58 C. axillaris accessions identified 47 diploids and 11 triploids. The average genome size of diploids was estimated at 450.36 Mb. Illumina sequencing of a diploid (No.22) generated 81.98 Gb of high-quality data (224.44X depth). K-mer analysis estimated the genome size at 365.25 Mb, with 0.91% genome heterozygosity, 34.17% GC content, and 47.74% repeated sequences, indicating high heterozygosity and duplication levels in the genome. Genome assembly may necessitate a combination of second- and third-generation sequencing technologies. Comparative analysis with the NT database revealed that C. axillaris exhibited the highest similarity to C. axillaris (3.01%) and Pistacia vera (2.5%). This study establishes a crucial theoretical framework for C. axillaris genome sequencing and molecular genetics. Full article

Mastic gum from Pistacia lentiscus L. has long been valued in Mediterranean medicine and food preservation, yet its bioactive potential remains underexplored in specific geographic contexts. In Morocco, the resin—locally known as Meska Horra—is abundant but insufficiently characterized. This study compared three extraction methods—cold maceration (CM), Soxhlet extraction (SE), and ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE)—using sequential acetone and 70% ethanol to recover complementary phenolic compounds from defatted resin. Targeted UHPLC–ESI–MS/MS profiling identified and quantified 30 phenolics, mainly flavonoids and phenolic acids, providing the first systematic dataset for Moroccan mastic gum. UAE–EtOH extract displayed the strongest antioxidant activity (DPPH IC50 = 0.029 mg/mL; ABTS•+ IC50 = 0.026 mg/mL). SE–acetone and SE–EtOH extracts showed potent antifungal activity, particularly against Geotrichum candidum, Rhodotorula glutinis, and Aspergillus niger (MBC = 1.7%). The SE–acetone extract exhibited cytotoxicity toward MIA PaCa-2 pancreatic cancer cells (IC50 = 19 µg/mL). These findings demonstrate that extraction method and solvent choice strongly influence phenolic recovery and associated bioactivities, supporting the valorization of Moroccan mastic gum as a promising source for nutraceutical and pharmaceutical applications. It belongs to the genus Mangifera, which comprises 69 species of plants found in tropical and subtropical regions, including India, Indonesia, the Malay Peninsula, Thailand, and South China. However, research on the structural information of complete chloroplast genomes of Mangifera is limited. Methods: The rapid advancement of high-throughput sequencing technology enables the acquisition of the entire chloroplast (cp) genome sequence, providing a molecular foundation for phylogenetic research. This work sequenced the chloroplast genomes of six Mangifera samples, performed a comparative analysis of the cp genomes, and investigated the evolutionary relationships within the Mangifera genus. Results: All six Mangifera samples showed a single circular molecule with a quadripartite structure, ranging from 157,604 bp to 158,889 bp in length. The number of RNA editing sites ranged from 60 to 61, with ndhB exhibiting the highest number of RNA editing sites across all species. Seven genes—namely, atpB, cemA, clpP, ndhD, petB, petD, and ycf15—exhibited a Ka/Ks value > 1, suggesting they may be under positive selection. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that Mangifera siamensis showed a close relationship between Mangifera indica and Mangifera sylvatica. Conclusions: Our comprehensive analysis of the whole cp genomes of the five Mangifera species offers significant insights regarding their phylogenetic reconstruction. Moreover, it elucidates the evolutionary processes of the cp genome within the Mangifera genus. Full article

The genus Pistacia from the Anacardiaceae family contains species of wild flowering plants. The only species that produces edible nuts large enough for commercial sale is P. vera L. (pistachio). Other species, such as P. terebinthus L., P. atlantica L., and P. khinjuk, are used as pistachio rootstocks. Pistacia species include phenolic compounds, such as flavonoids, essential oils, and tannins, which are responsible for a number of pharmacological properties. The species most commonly investigated for their anticancer and/or cytotoxic activities against cancer cells in experimental studies include P. lentiscus, P. atlantica subspecies, and P. chinensis subsp. integerrima. However, no review exists that evaluates the phenolic compounds of three other Pistacia species (P. vera L., P. terebinthus L., and P. khinjuk) and their anticancer and cytotoxic effects. Thus, this review aims to thoroughly assess the phenolic compounds that were isolated from these species and investigate any potential anticancer or cytotoxic effects on cancer cells. The findings show that pistacia species and their isolated phenolic compounds (phenolic acids, flavonoids, and essential oils) from different plant parts have anticancer activity against lung, cervical, prostate, gastric, colon, liver, renal, skin, and breast cancer cells. Additionally, certain phenolic compounds from pistacia species have cytotoxic activity; however, the degree of toxicity may vary based on the dosage and duration of use. Further experiments are required to fully understand the possible mechanisms underlying the anticancer and cytotoxic effects of pistacia species and their phenolic compounds on cancer cells. Wild edible fruits are important for ensuring food and nutritional security, especially in developing countries like South Africa. Globally, wild edible fruits are widely distributed, and they are consumed in different parts of the world; however, they are undervalued. This systematic review consolidates existing knowledge addressing the utilization of wild edible fruits, and their nutritional benefits. A total of 74 wild edible fruit species belonging to 29 families found in South Africa were documented in this study. The nutritional composition was reported only in 41 (55.4%) fruit species. The Anacardiaceae family had the most cited species (n = 11) (14.86%), followed by the Moraceae (n = 6) (8.1%), and Cucurbitaceae and Ebenaceae, of which each had five species, each contributing 5.4% to the total documented species. Sclerocarya birrea. (A.Rich.) Hochst., Mimusops zeyheri Sond., and Strychnos spinosa Lam. are three of the most important wild fruit species contributing to food and nutritional security. This review revealed that there is a dearth of literature studies that have substantially documented the contribution of wild edible fruits in food and nutritional security. In this regard, a study on ethnobotanical evaluation incorporating wild edible fruits used by local people could significantly provide insights and enhance our understanding of indigenous and technological knowledge that could be utilized to strengthen rural food security. Pistacia terebinthus L., commonly known as the turpentine tree, is a wild-growing species with a well-documented history of use in traditional medicine and ethnobotany. Various parts of the plant—fruits, seeds, resin, leaves, and galls—have demonstrated significant bioactive potential, particularly antioxidant, antimicrobial, and functional properties. Despite these promising attributes, the industrial application of P. terebinthus L. in contemporary food and nutraceutical systems remains limited and underexplored. Recent advances have employed a range of technological strategies—including encapsulation, active food packaging, emulsion stabilization, probiotic immobilization, and fermentation—to improve the stability, bioavailability, and functional performance of P. terebinthus L.-derived extracts within food matrices. These approaches have shown potential in enhancing aroma retention, extending shelf life, and supporting probiotic viability, thereby positioning P. terebinthus L. as a promising candidate for use in functional formulations and natural food preservation. Nevertheless, further investigation is required to optimize processing parameters, assess the long-term stability of bioactive compounds, and establish standardized regulatory frameworks. Addressing these challenges will be essential for facilitating the broader integration of P. terebinthus L. into the functional food, nutraceutical, and food preservation industries. Full article

Food resources are the fundamental basis for the survival and reproduction of animals. Diet research is the foundation for understanding their ecological habits and is of great significance for evaluating their survival status and carrying out effective protection and management. South China sika deer (Cervus nippon kopschi) is the most endangered subspecies of wild sika deer in China, with a small population and a shrinking distribution area. Here, we used DNA metabarcoding technology to study the diet composition of C. n. kopschi in Taohongling Sika Deer National Nature Reserve in Jiangxi, China. Comparative analysis of diet composition among different areas (A–E) of C. n. kopschi was conducted, as well as C. n. hortulorum raised in the same areas. We found that the dominant families in the diet composition of C. n. kopschi were Rosaceae (46.73% of relative abundance), Anacardiaceae (6.02%), Poaceae (5.54%), and Fabaceae (3.92%), with Rubus (45.43%) being the absolute dominant genus. Thirty-two preferred plant species were identified in the diet of C. n. kopschi. The highest relative abundance (45%) was Rubus reflexus. The dominant family and genus in the diet composition of C. n. hortulorum were Fabaceae (33.89%) and Pueraria (32.87%), respectively. Of the 15 preferred plant species, the highest relative abundance was Pueraria montana (33%). The richness, diversity, and evenness of diet composition in Area B of C. n. kopschi were the highest among all areas, with significant differences compared to Areas C, D, and E. Diet composition of deer in Area A did not differ significantly from those in other areas. Principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) and nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) both indicated a significant separation in the diet composition of C. n. kopschi and C. n. hortulorum, while Area B showed significant separation from the other areas. This study elaborates on the diet composition information of C. n. kopschi and can provide a reference for the protection and improvement of the habitat of sika deer. Full article
