Wilderness areas are declining worldwide. A major reason is large-scale forestry activities like logging. At the same time, wilderness offers unique opportunities for recreation in natural and remote environments, enabling communities to gather economic income based on wilderness tourism. An outstanding element of wilderness areas is primary forests. Wilderness is often understood as untouched nature, unchanged by human intervention. For visitors, wilderness resembles a counter-world, enabling them to escape from everyday life. The present study investigates whether forestry activities have an effect on the attractiveness of primary forests for wilderness tourism. This question is answered based on a case study in the Făgăraş Mountains (Southern Carpathians, Romania). The findings show that primary forests are a unique selling point in tourism. Forestry activities are associated with direct (loss of biodiversity) and indirect (change of target group) effects. Forestry activities not only cause changes in forests as a tourism attractor, but also change the attractor’s contexts, by rendering access difficult or by destroying hiking trails. This paper makes theoretical and practical contributions. From a theoretical point of view, it reflects the concept of wilderness tourism and highlights the importance of contexts (i.e., access paths) for the attractiveness of wild forests. From a practical point of view, it highlights the importance of distinguishing various target groups and different degrees of naturalness to maintain a nuanced portfolio of recreational opportunities in wild forests, for example by referring to established management tools like the recreation opportunity spectrum. So far, published geochronological data poorly constrain the Late Pleistocene glacial fluctuations in the Făgăraş Mts (Southern Carpathians, Romania). The deglaciation chronology in the central Făgăraş Mts is supported by new (n = 5) and recalculated (n = 5) 10Be exposure ages from a southern and two northern valleys. Cosmic ray exposure (CRE) ages were calculated considering the effects of surface denudation, uplift and snow-shielding. A 10Be exposure age obtained from a glacial landform representing the last glacierets of the central Făgăraş Mts yielded an age of 13.3 ± 1.2 ka. A polished bedrock sample and a moraine boulder constrain the age of a cirque glacier stage to 14.5 ± 1.5 ka, while quite coherent CRE ages from two erratic boulders place the previous stage at ~18.7 ka (18.6 ± 1.7 ka and 18.7 ± 1.7 ka). These glacial stages coincide with major deglaciation stages M4 and M2a reconstructed in the Retezat Mts, derived from comparable CRE ages calculated using the same methodology; however, geomorphological and/or geochronological evidence of the intermediate stages is still not found in the central Făgăraş Mts. All CRE ages gathered from the landforms corresponding to the more extended glacial stages are younger than expected from their morphostratigraphic position and thus considered as minimum age constraints. However, considering the coherent CRE ages of the above morphostratigraphic stage, it is likely that the balanced-budget glaciological conditions corresponding to these more extended stages prevailed before ~19 ka and likely coincided with the cold peaks of the Marine Isotope Stage 2. The currently available in situ 10Be data do not support the existence of a period of glacier advance during the Holocene or Greenland Stadial-1 (Younger Dryas) in the central Făgăraş Mts. For the first time in Romania, a complex study was conducted on soil mite communities from two types of managed grasslands: ungrazed and intensively grazed. The study was accomplished in August 2018, in the Făgăraş Mountains. Within the soil mite communities (Mesostigmata), 30 species were identified, from 80 soil samples. The following population parameters were investigated: species richness, numerical abundance, dominance, Shannon index of diversity, evenness and equitability. Eight environmental variables were also measured: soil and air humidity; soil and air temperature; soil pH; resistance of soil to penetration; soil electrical conductivity; and vegetation coverage. The results revealed that species richness, Shannon index of diversity, evenness and equitability indices had higher values in ungrazed grasslands, whereas in intensively grazed areas, the numerical abundance and dominance index had significantly higher values. The species Alliphis halleri was dominant in the ungrazed grasslands. Each type of managed grassland was characterised by specific environmental conditions, which had an important influence, even at the species level. Full article

Mountain hiking trails are vital components of tourist infrastructure and provide recreational opportunities for a large number of tourists. Exposed roots along the tourist trails in the forested mountains are impacted by tourist trampling and various natural processes, thus becoming even more exposed and eroded. The aim of our study was to estimate the annual erosion rates along three hiking trails in the Făgăraș Mountains using dendrogeomorphological approaches. The three used routes were: Bâlea Hotel—Bâlea Waterfall (BWFHT), Bâlea Hotel—Bâlea Glacial Lake (BLHT), and Bâlea Hotel—Doamnei Glacial Valley (DVHT). The average annual erosion rates in BWFHT, BLHT, and DVHT were 10.6 ± 4.4, 6.8 ± 3.9, and 6.1 ± 3.3 mm·y−1, respectively. Over a 56-year interval (1965–2021), 610 scars were recorded among the annual growth rings of the sampled tree roots; 172, 213, and 225 scars were recorded in BWFHT, BLHT, and DVHT, respectively. Moreover, we identified 1022 rows of traumatic resin ducts (TRDs) associated with scars: 237, 343, and 442 in BWFHT, BLHT, and DVHT, respectively. Additionally, the climate of the Făgăraș Mountains is humid with a multiannual average precipitation of 1366.2 mm; the precipitation in 24 h, between 1979 and 2021 in seven and three cases exceeded 70 mm/24 h and 100 mm/24 h, respectively. Thus, there were synchronous situations of root exposure with 24 h rainfall. However, it is unclear whether precipitation plays a decisive role in root exposure or in triggering erosion processes on tourist trails. We considered that tourist traffic plays a decisive role in root exposure and erosion, however locally and complementarily, 24 h precipitation must also be considered. Full article
