Multi-Sensor Data Fusion and Vibro-Acoustic Feature Engineering for Health Monitoring and Remaining Useful Life Prediction of Hydraulic Valves

The reliability of hydraulic valves is critical for the safety and efficiency of industrial systems. While vibration and pressure sensors are widely deployed for condition monitoring, leveraging the heterogeneous data from these multi-sensor systems for accurate remaining useful life (RUL) prediction remains challenging due to noise, outliers, and inconsistent sampling rates. This study proposes a sensor data-driven framework that integrates multi-step signal preprocessing, time–frequency feature fusion, and a machine learning model to address these challenges. Specifically, raw data from vibration and pressure sensors are first harmonized through a multi-step preprocessing pipeline including Hampel filtering for impulse noise, Robust Scaler for outlier mitigation, Butterworth low-pass filtering for effective frequency band retention, and resampling to a unified rate. Subsequently, vibro-acoustic features are extracted from the preprocessed sensor signals, including Fast Fourier Transform (FFT)-based frequency domain features and Wavelet Packet Decomposition (WPD)-based time–frequency features, to comprehensively characterize the valve’s degradation. A health indicator (HI) is constructed by fusing the most sensitive features. Finally, a Kernel Principal Component Analysis (KPCA)-optimized Random Forest model is developed for HI prediction, which strongly correlates with RUL. Validated on the UCI hydraulic condition monitoring dataset through 20-run Monte-Carlo cross-validation, our method achieves a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.0319 ± 0.0090, a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.0109 ± 0.0014, and a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.9828 ± 0.0097, demonstrating consistent performance across different data partitions. These results confirm the framework’s effectiveness in translating multi-sensor data into actionable insights for predictive maintenance, offering a viable solution for industrial health management systems. Background/Objectives: This study analyzes how Health and Fitness Awareness influences quality of life (QOL), mediated by Health Behavior Action and Safety Behavior Practice, within the Social Determinants of Health (SDH) framework. Methods: Accordingly, a multi-group structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis was conducted on the data obtained from 6601 respondents selected from the 2024 National Sports for All Survey, jointly administered by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Korea Sports Promotion Foundation. Nationally representative survey data was collected across metropolitan, mid-sized, and rural areas in South Korea. The analysis further examined whether the structural pathways differed by regional size. Outcome measures included path coefficients and latent mean differences among Health and Fitness Awareness, Health Behavior Action, Safety Behavior Practice, and Improvement in QOL. Results: The analysis revealed that Health and Fitness Awareness significantly influenced both Health Behavior Action and Safety Behavior Practice; these, in turn, had positive effects on Improvement in QOL. Moreover, the structural pathways differed by region: whereas Health Behavior Action played a more significant mediating role in large cities, Safety Behavior Practice was more prominent in mid-sized ones. Conclusions: These findings are expected to provide a theoretical and policy-based foundation for region-specific health promotion strategy development and health equity advancement. Full article

Mental Health, Spirituality, and Flourishing in New Medical Residents

Background/Objectives: Depression is common in young doctors. Religion/spirituality, vocation, and family might protect against it. The objective of this study was to evaluate mental health, spirituality, and flourishing (a multi-dimensional assessment of well-being) in new medical residents. We also evaluated the associations of baseline characteristics with flourishing. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional survey in 743 new medical residents who responded to (1) a questionnaire addressing mental health, vocation, spirituality, family, and religion and (2) the “Secure Flourish Index”, which assesses happiness/life satisfaction, physical/mental health, meaning/purpose, character/virtue, social relationships, and financial/material stability. Results: The mean age was 25.7 ± 4.0, and 526 (70.8%) were females, 157 (21.1%) had felt depressed, and 22 (3.0%) had suicidal ideation. The mean values for assessments of vocation and family were very high (>9.2), while religion and spirituality had intermediate values (5.2–6.5). Participants with depression or suicidal ideation had lower assessments in all four of the aforementioned domains, although differences were only significant for depression–religion (p = 0.03). The average “Secure Flourish Index” was 8.2 ± 0.9. There were lower levels of flourishing in males and in those with depression or suicidal ideation, with p-values < 0.001. Flourishing had a correlation with vocation and family (with r-values of 0.3–0.4) and with spirituality and religion (with r-values of 0.25–0.27), with p-values ≤ 0.001. Conclusions: Resident well-being is critical for physicians and healthcare quality. Spirituality and religion may serve as a protective resource, enhancing flourishing. Our study shows that new medical residents seem to have high value assessments for vocation and family importance and intermediate values for religion and spirituality. The mean flourishing scores were high, but were lower in males and in those with depression. Flourishing seems to be correlated with vocation, family, spirituality, and religion, but these associations need to be confirmed with validated screening tools. Full article

Aim: The study developed and validated AppER, an mHealth tool for informal caregivers of children with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, and examined differences between app users and non-users. Methods: Four phases were followed: (1) focus groups with experts and caregivers to identify care-related domains; (2) prototype development and validity testing (CVR, I-CVI, I-FVI) using the MARS scale; (3) implementation of the final app; and (4) psychosocial profiling of 88 caregivers (42 users and 46 non-users) measuring quality of life, dependency, somatic symptoms, and coping strategies. Results: AppER showed high content and face validity, surpassing reference thresholds. In the psychosocial analysis, users reported lower perceived quality of life than non-users, despite no significant differences in dependency, somatic symptoms, or coping strategies. Conclusions: Employment patterns differed: more users were dedicated to household tasks, while more non-users were self-employed, suggesting economic factors may affect app uptake and quality of life perceptions. Findings indicate AppER is a valid, well-rated support tool, and that caregivers with lower perceived quality of life may be more inclined to adopt digital health solutions, potentially to address complex care demands. Designing targeted digital interventions may be particularly valuable for those in less favorable socioeconomic contexts. Because of the small sample and between-group imbalances, results are exploratory and warrant confirmation in larger, balanced samples. Full article

Background/Objectives: The Jiangnan diet—a traditional dietary pattern prevalent in Eastern China—is a newly proposed dietary pattern. This study provides additional epidemiological evidence for the promotion of the Jiangnan diet through examining the association between the Jiangnan diet and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Methods: A multicenter cross-sectional study was carried out during 2020 among 1084 community-dwelling adults aged 55 years and above across multiple sites in Zhejiang Province, China. Data collection encompassed basic information of the population, cognition (using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment), dietary intake information (using the Food Frequency Questionnaire, FFQ), life pattern, depressive symptoms (using the Mental Health Assessment Scale for the Elderly), and physical examinations (e.g., height, weight). The dietary patterns were assessed using a validated semi-quantitative FFQ. Factor analysis was used to analyze the 16 categories of food intake of the participants, and dietary patterns and the “Jiangnan diet” were extracted. The Jiangnan diet scores were categorized into quartiles: Q1 (lowest) to Q4 (highest). Multivariate logistic regression was employed to examine the association between adherence to the Jiangnan diet and the prevalence of MCI, with results expressed as odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results: The estimated prevalence of MCI in the study population was 24.6%. The dietary pattern characterized by whole grains, low salt, and low oil was identified as the “Jiangnan diet”. Participants with the highest adherence to the “Jiangnan diet” pattern had 79.2% lower odds of MCI than those with the lowest adherence (odds ratio = 0.208, 95% CI = 0.120~0.362, p < 0.0001) after adjusting for age, frequency of social activities, depression, hypertension, alcohol consumption, and energy intake. Conclusions: High adherence to the Jiangnan diet was associated with lower odds of MCI. To further verify the relationship between the Jiangnan diet and MCI, future studies will focus on longitudinal research exploring different dietary patterns and disease outcomes across various regions. Background/Objectives: Cord blood mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNAcn) has been proposed as a biomarker reflecting environmental influences during fetal life, with reported associations with perinatal outcomes such as birth weight and length. Within the framework of the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) theory, this study aimed to investigate whether cord blood mtDNAcn is related to postnatal physical growth in early childhood. Methods: We analyzed data from 150 newborns (68 females and 82 males) enrolled in the Tohoku Medical Megabank Birth and Three-Generation Cohort Study in Japan. Cord blood mtDNAcn was quantified using real-time PCR, and standard deviation scores for weight and height were assessed at 1, 2–3, 4–6, 18–24, and 36–48 months of age. Correlation analyses were conducted separately by sex. Results: Cord blood mtDNAcn showed no significant associations with body weight or height at any of the postnatal time points up to 48 months of age. Growth trajectories of infants with higher or lower mtDNAcn values at birth tended to converge toward the population mean during infancy and toddlerhood. Conclusions: Although no significant relationships were observed, this exploratory, hypothesis-generating study provides a foundation for future investigations. Larger cohorts with extended follow-up are needed to clarify the potential significance of cord blood mtDNAcn in early-life research on child growth and health. Full article

Noise has detrimental effects on mental and physical health and quality of life, especially for those living in apartment buildings. Therefore, sound insulation materials are pivotal for reducing unwanted noise as well as enhancing acoustic comfort. This study offers a hybrid approach for analyzing 3D woven textile sound insulation material effectiveness, especially in residential buildings, by simulating airborne sound insulation and testing manufactured slab samples with 3D woven textile mortars in a laboratory using a tapping machine. At the same time, the JCA model and the transfer matrix method are employed to calibrate sound absorption coefficients (SAC) and simulate its airborne sound insulation effect in buildings in Seoul, South Korea. Results indicate that the maximum mean sound pressure level (SPL) of the 3D woven textile was reduced up to 9 dB in the octave band frequencies. The thickness improvement of 3D woven textiles enhances the mid- and high-frequency sound absorption effect, most pronounced in 3D woven textiles made of double-layer (DSRM) material, which demonstrated an air sound insulation efficiency around 28.5% greater than that of traditional materials. The maximum drop in impact sound pressure level (SPL) at 2 kHz is 13 dB. The study also proposes a strategy to optimize sound insulation performance, which is used as an effective solution for noise control in buildings. These findings lay the groundwork for research on the application of 3D woven textiles for sound insulation in residential buildings and offer prospects for sustainable textile composites in architectural building applications. Kalanchoe pinnata, commonly known as the “miracle plant” or “life plant”, is a succulent species traditionally used for various health conditions. Recent research investigations have intensified interest in this species due to its diverse repertoire of bioactive constituents, including flavonoids, alkaloids, triterpenes, and glycosides. These compounds have been associated with multiple therapeutic effects, notably antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antidiabetic activities. Although several studies have highlighted the positive effects of the extracts of K. pinnata on key factors contributing to the pathophysiology and complications of diabetes mellitus, a systematic overview focusing on the use of these extracts and their bioactive constituents in the management of the disease is lacking. This literature review summarizes the phytochemical composition, traditional uses, and recent scientific data supporting the antidiabetic potential of K. pinnata, with a particular focus on its effects on glycemic control, as well as inflammatory and oxidative homeostasis, toxicity, safety, and potential clinical implications. The phytochemical constituents discussed include quercetin, kaempferol, apigenin, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), avicularin, and bufadienolides, along with a presentation of representative structures. The review also covers the potential mechanisms of action in diabetes mellitus. The survey of available literature highlights the effects of K. pinnata on indices of diabetes mellitus, including enhancing insulin sensitivity, mitigating oxidative stress and inflammation, lowering blood glucose levels, and the potential adverse effects. These results point to the promising prospect for K. pinnata use in the management of diabetes mellitus and its associated complications, while underscoring the need for more rigorous investigations, including well-controlled clinical trials. Research on the Impact of Landscape Pattern in Haikou City on Urban Water Body Quality

In the rapid development process of cities, as important ecological corridors and landscape carriers, the water quality conditions of urban water bodies are not only related to the health of the ecological environment, but also closely linked to the quality of life of residents. The landscape pattern, as an important component of the urban ecosystem, has a potential impact on water quality. As a tropical coastal city, the unique water network pattern of Haikou City is facing the dual challenges of landscape fragmentation and water quality pollution in its rapid urban expansion. In order to study the impact of the landscape pattern of Haikou City on urban water bodies, this study takes the urban water bodies of Haikou City as the research object. By comprehensively applying landscape ecology methods and water quality monitoring techniques, and using landscape pattern indices (such as the number of patches, fragmentation degree, spread degree, etc.) and on-site investigation of water quality parameter data (such as chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), etc.), and by using correlation analysis and redundancy analysis, we explore the mechanism by which landscape patterns affect water quality. The results show that: (1) There are significant differences in water quality among water bodies. The concentrations of COD and TN in Hongcheng Lake are relatively high. The average values reached 86.603 mg/L and 13.368 mg/L, respectively, mainly affected by the high-intensity construction land around. Jinniu Lake has a high degree of landscape fragmentation and relatively high concentrations of NH3-N and TP. The average values are 2.086 mg/L and 0.154 mg/L, respectively. The Meishe River has a strong water purification capacity due to its good vegetation coverage. (2) The influence of landscape pattern on water quality has a scale effect. Hongcheng Lake, Jinniu Lake, and Meishe River all have the best interpretation rate of water quality in the 2000 m buffer zone landscape pattern. (3) The expansion of construction land has significantly exacerbated water pollution, while natural vegetation landscapes with high connectivity and low fragmentation can effectively improve water quality. The research reveals the correlation between urban landscape planning and water quality protection. It is suggested that by enhancing ecological connectivity, controlling non-point source pollution, and implementing differentiated seasonal management, the self-purification capacity of water bodies can be improved, providing a scientific basis for ecological restoration and sustainable development in Haikou City. Crohn’s disease (CD) is an immune-mediated inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) with a multifactorial pathogenesis involving genetic predisposition, immune dysregulation, and environmental triggers. Dietary patterns have recently garnered growing attention for their potential benefits and risks in patients with IBD. Nutritional therapy has been established as an effective option in pediatric populations, but its role in adults remains less defined. The available studies indicate that while no single diet can be universally recommended, adherence to a Mediterranean diet is associated with multiple health benefits. Nutritional therapy appears promising in inducing clinical remission in adults with mild to moderate CD, particularly when partial enteral nutrition is combined with food-based modifications. Background: End-stage renal disease (ESRD) presents a substantial and growing global health challenge, where hemodialysis serves as an essential life-sustaining therapy for countless individuals. Despite its physiological necessity, the demanding treatment regimen can profoundly impact mental health and overall well-being, though gender-specific data and correlates within the Saudi population remain insufficiently explored. Methods: This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate this gap by assessing the prevalence of anxiety and depression, evaluating health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and analyzing associations with gender and treatment duration in a cohort of 250 hemodialysis patients from multiple centers in Madinah, Saudi Arabia. Validated instruments, namely, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36), were employed. Results: The findings revealed a significant psychological burden, with 38% of patients exhibiting anxiety and 32% depression, with females disproportionately affected. HRQoL scores were severely diminished across all domains compared to healthy population norms. Furthermore, a longer dialysis vintage demonstrated a significant positive correlation with worsening psychological scores and a decline in physical HRQoL. Conclusions: These results underscore the critical need for a paradigm shift in standard care, advocating for the systematic integration of routine mental health screenings and the development of tailored, gender-sensitive psychosocial interventions to mitigate this considerable burden. Telerehabilitation is an effective, accessible addition or alternative to conventional rehabilitation for fracture management, especially in older adults after hip fractures, leveraging video visits, mHealth apps, virtual reality (VR), and wearable sensors to deliver exercise, education, and monitoring at home with high satisfaction and adherence. Across non-surgical and surgical contexts, telemedicine shows feasibility and cost benefits, with mixed superiority but consistent non-inferiority for functional outcomes versus in-person care. In hip fracture populations, randomized and non-randomized studies indicate improvements in functional independence measure (FIM), Timed Up and Go test (TUG), Activities of Daily Living/Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (ADLs/IADLs), and quality of life, with some evidence for reduced anxiety and depression, while effects on mobility, pain, and adverse events remain uncertain overall. In patients with upper-limb fractures, telerehabilitation appears to improve function and pain, though strength gains may lag compared with in-person therapy in some trials; adjuncts like motor imagery and virtual reality may enhance outcomes and motivation. Application is facilitated by user-friendly platforms, caregiver involvement, and simple modalities such as structured phone follow-up. Limitations include small samples, heterogeneous protocols, scarce long-term data, and a predominance of non-inferiority or complementary designs, warranting larger, definitive trials. This technology can lead to improved patient management at home, effortlessly verifying treatment compliance, efficacy, and safety, while simultaneously reducing the need for hospitalization, promoting a more peaceful recovery. Here, we have undertaken a narrative review of the medical–scientific literature in this field. Full article

Microplastics are considered to be one of the major threats that have significant effects on marine ecosystems and marine organisms. These tiny plastic particles can also absorb and carry toxic substances to marine life, potentially affecting human health through food chains. This study investigates microplastics in surface seawater and in two species of sea cucumber, Holothuria atra at Similan Island and Holothuria edulis at Surin Island. Color, shape, and components of microplastics were identified to evaluate sources of the microplastics found in the area. The results found that the average abundance of microplastics in seawater at Similan and Surin Islands is 1.93 ± 1.42 and 1.11 ± 0.75 pieces/m3, respectively. Black fiber is a dominant microplastic found in seawater and both species of sea cucumber. Fourier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) indicated that polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polyester are the major components of microplastics in surface seawater, while cotton blends and other mixed components are the major components in sea cucumbers. These findings imply that microplastics found in surface seawater could potentially degrade from fishing and aquaculture equipment, maritime transport, and materials from plastic containers. Microplastics in sea cucumbers, on the other hand, are probably originating from domestic sewage discharge, especially textile washing and fishing equipment. Full article

Background: Adults with cancer who are pre-frail or frail are at risk of poor outcomes. Geriatric assessment (GA) is recommended to assess and manage vulnerability and risk of frailty in older adults with cancer (≥65) and to inform referrals in supportive services, including rehabilitation. Yet, adoption of the GA in community oncology practice lags, and frailty among adults younger than 65 often goes undetected and/or unaddressed. We evaluated the feasibility of a GA-guided rehabilitation care model and assessed changes in patient-reported and performance-based outcomes after rehabilitation. Methods: Adults (≥18 years) starting systemic therapy at a community oncology practice enrolled in the study. The GA was administered online and monthly for one year. Frailty/pre-frailty was identified using a previously validated 44-item index. The oncology team was notified of frail/pre-frail patients and then made referrals to outpatient rehabilitation. Feasibility outcomes (recruitment, retention, fidelity) and participant acceptability [7 items, 0–5 Likert scale] were analyzed descriptively. Patient-reported and performance-based outcomes were examined using the paired t-test. Results: 48% of eligible patients enrolled (N = 141), and 83% completed at least one GA. Frailty/pre-frailty was identified in 40% of the GAs, resulting in 282 referrals to rehabilitation (99% fidelity). Acceptability scores ranged from 3.5 ± 1.7 to 4.7 ± 0.6. Participants who attended rehabilitation (52%) improved significantly in outcomes measuring health-related quality of life, mobility, aerobic capacity, and strength (all p < 0.05). Conclusion: Implementing a GA-guided rehabilitation care model was feasible and acceptable to patients receiving systemic treatment. Those who attended rehabilitation experienced significant improvement in patient-reported and performance-based outcomes. Full article
