Digital extension services (DESs) play a crucial role in transforming the agri-food sector while creating the potential to enhance production towards sustainable development via ensuring resource efficiency, environmental resilience, and economic viability for smallholder farmers. However, there is less research on the availability and quality of digital advisory information to provide the foundation for the ways forward to ensure accessible and timely benefits of science-based extension and innovation for smallholder farmers. This study used a systematic review method to explore the opportunities and barriers to develop interactive DESs in developing countries (2005–2021). Features of 141 articles were summarized resulting in the identification of 13 opportunities and 21 barriers. Opportunities indicate that interactive DESs were the best source for learning and the exchange of information/ideas/experiences, useful for enhancing agricultural productivity and profitability, creating network collaboration among farmers and stakeholders, and making extension service delivery cost-effective. Barriers of interactive DESs include a lack of a two-way interaction information, lack of a centralized information network between farmers and service providers, lack of technical know-how on ICTs, poor internet connection, and lack of effective training on ICTs. However, farmers’ awareness, motivation, and readiness to use interactive DESs has increased in several countries. It is therefore a great opportunity to invest in digital platforms as a long-term intervention to boost sustainable agricultural sustainability. Full article

Job satisfaction is a critical determinant in talent acquisition and corporate value enhancement. The COVID-19 pandemic has triggered a significant increase in online-based non-face-to-face services and consumption, leading to sustained growth in ICT industry job demand. Given the ICT sector’s heavy reliance on human capital and its growing workforce demands, understanding the evolving factors of job satisfaction in this sector has become increasingly crucial. This study analyzed job satisfaction factors derived from employee reviews on an online job review platform using the Dirichlet Multinomial Regression (DMR) topic model, examining temporal changes in these factors before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, 25 distinct job satisfaction-related topics were identified, and their temporal distribution patterns were categorized into three trajectories: ascending, descending, and stable. Topics exhibiting ascending patterns included work–life balance, organizational systems, corporate culture, employee benefits, work environment, and software development practices. Conversely, factors demonstrating descending patterns encompassed annual compensation, task characteristics, supervisory relationships, employee treatment, commuting conditions, work-related stress, and welfare programs. The remaining topics maintained relatively stable patterns throughout the observation period. These findings contribute to both academic literature and industry practice by elucidating the evolutionary trends in job satisfaction determinants during the COVID-19 pandemic, thereby facilitating more informed strategic human resource management decisions in the ICT sector. The spread of information and communication technologies (ICTs) has brought advantages and disadvantages, particularly impacting youth, who use the Internet and social media applications daily. In preadolescents’ social development, problematic social media use (PSMU) and cyberbullying (CB) are potential risk factors across several countries. PSMU is defined as the lack of regulation of social media platforms that is associated with negative outcomes in everyday life, while CB refers to using digital technology to harass, threaten, or embarrass another person. Among preadolescents, CB perpetration is frequently associated with cybervictimization (CV) experiences. The underlying mechanisms that drive this relationship have received limited attention. The aim of the cross-national comparative study, rooted in the general aggression model, is to investigate the direct and indirect effects between cyberbullying perpetration and cybervictimization, testing a model involving PSMU and moral disengagement (MD) as serial mediators in this association. A total of 895 Italian and Spanish preadolescents (Mage = 11.23, SDage = 1.064) completed a self-report survey during school hours. Descriptive statistics were computed, and a serial mediation model was run. The results show that CV is positively associated with CB, and that PSMU and MD positively serially mediate the CV–CB link. This study’s insights suggest the need for tailored educational interventions targeting European youth, to promote more positive online social interactions and a safer digital environment. With the advent of Industry 5.0, the electrical sector has been endowed with intelligent devices that are propelling high penetration of distributed energy microgeneration, VPP, smart buildings, and smart plants and imposing new challenges on the sector. This new environment requires a smarter network, including transforming the simple electricity customer into a “smart customer” who values the quality of energy and its rational use. The SPG (smart power grid) is the perfect solution for meeting these needs. It is crucial to understand energy use to guarantee quality of service and meet data security requirements. The use of simulations to map the behavior of complex infrastructures is the best strategy because it overcomes the limitations of traditional analytical solutions. This article presents the ICT laboratory structure developed within the Department of Electrical Engineering of the Polytechnic School of the Universidade de São Paulo (USP). It is based on an architecture that utilizes LTE/EPC wireless technology (4G, 5G, and B5G) to enable machine-to-machine communication (mMTC) between SPG elements using edge computing (MEC) resources and those of smart city platforms. We evaluate this proposal through simulations using data from real and emulated equipment and co-simulations shared by SPG laboratories at POLI-USP. Finally, we present the preliminary results of integration of the power laboratory, network simulation (ns-3), and a smart city platform (InterSCity) for validation and testing of the architecture. Background: This systematic review will address the influence of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) on democratic processes and citizens’ participation, which is enabled by such tools as social media, e-voting systems, e-government initiatives, and e-participation platforms. Methods: Based on an in-depth analysis of 46 peer-reviewed articles published between 1999 and 2024, this review emphasizes how ICTs have improved democratic engagement quality, efficiency, and transparency, but highlights key challenges and research gaps. Results: From this angle, ICT tools have great potential to nurture civic engagement and good governance through transparency. Challenges persist with the ethical and social implications of surveillance technologies, security concerns about digital voting systems, and the widening digital divide disproportionately affecting marginalized populations. The current regulatory framework dealing with privacy and misinformation issues is relatively weak, and there is also a lack of understanding about ICTs’ long-term effects on democratic governance. Conclusions: This review underlines the duality of the roles played by ICT as both an enabler and a challenge to democratic processes. It calls for regulatory measures to protect privacy, fight disinformation, and reduce the digital divide. Future research in this area should focus on the long-term effects of ICTs and how they can be equitably and efficiently integrated into democratic systems, with strategies aimed at maximizing benefits while minimizing risks. As Information and Communication Technology (ICT) systems become increasingly complex, the need for adaptable and efficient security certification frameworks grows. This paper introduces a flexible security evaluation methodology designed to serve as the foundation for cybersecurity certification across diverse ICT systems. The proposed methodology integrates risk assessment and test-based evaluation, offering a scalable approach that adapts to different tools and processes, addressing the limitations of existing rigid certification schemes. The certification approach expands on ETSI’s Risk-Based Security Assessment and Testing methods, based on ISO 31000 and ISO 29119, and it integrates widely recognized standards such as MUD. This ensures an objective, empirical evaluation process that enables partial automation and simplifies recertification. As a proof of concept, we validate the methodology in two real use cases, an ICT gateway for smart grids and an AI-powered investments platform, demonstrating its flexibility and applicability to real-world contexts while addressing the challenges of modern ICT ecosystems. This paper describes CAREUP, a novel older adult healthy aging support platform based on Intrinsic Capacity (IC) monitoring. Besides standard functionalities like storing health measurement data or providing users with personalized recommendations, the platform includes novel intrinsic capacity assessment and prediction algorithms. Older adults’ performance is continuously monitored in all five IC domains—locomotion, psychology, cognition, vitality, and sensory capacity—based on measurement results and answers to questionnaires gathered using the platform’s mobile applications. The users are also presented with a machine learning-based prediction of how their intrinsic capacity might change over the following years. The platform’s operation was successfully tested with the participation of older adults and their caregivers in three countries: Austria, Italy, and Romania. Full article

The use of digital audio-based learning applications in classrooms is increasing. Thus, instructional technology professionals need to become more skilled in designing and developing these apps. To succeed in the future learning process, students studying instructional technology need to have mastered these skills. This study aims to examine the impact of a specialized platform proposed to cultivate students’ skills in easily designing and producing online educational talking books (online ETBs). To improve the target abilities, we developed a new specialized platform as a web-based system for this investigation that includes several innovative tools and special learning content. The research design used was quasi-experimental. Thirty-two undergraduate students majoring in instructional technology who were in the third grade examined the proposed platform. With the pre-and post-test design, all participants were placed into one group. Three online instruments were used to gather the data: a performance observation card; a product evaluation card; and a usability questionnaire. According to the results, the suggested platform considerably increased the practical skills required to design and create an online ETB. Additionally, the proposed platform positively impacted the production of online ETB products with an acceptable proficiency level across various educational subjects. The customized platform has also proven to be a comfortable learning environment for the participating instructional technology students. This platform may be utilized as an ICT teaching tool to enhance instructional technology departments as it is appropriate for constructing online ETBs in various educational areas without coding barriers. Cultural heritage significantly influences the transmission of history from the past to the present and future. The core of protecting cultural heritage is inheritance, making sure the heritages can be sustainable forever. Various ICT methods facilitate the dissemination and preservation of cultural heritage information. However, traditional ICT platforms often focus on official authority perspectives, neglecting users’ preferences for retrieving cultural heritage information. To address this, a hypothetical media platform was developed to collect people’s preferences for cultural heritage content and media types through a questionnaire, leading to the creation of a new multi-media platform. For demonstration purposes, Strijp-S, an industrial cultural heritage site in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, was used as a case study. A questionnaire was administered to test the prototype’s effectiveness and compare it with a comprehensive search engine like Google. Independent and paired-samples t-tests were conducted to analyze the results, demonstrating that the dedicated multi-media platform prototype was more effective than Google in raising awareness of Strijp-S. These findings indicate that a platform designed based on users’ preferences can enhance public awareness of cultural heritage. This approach can assist policymakers in developing platforms to promote local cultural heritage effectively. Full article

Modern ICT infrastructures, i.e., cyber-physical systems and critical infrastructures relying on interconnected IT (Information Technology)- and OT (Operational Technology)-based components and (sub-)systems, raise complex challenges in tackling security and safety issues. Nowadays, many security controls and mechanisms have been made available and exploitable to solve specific security needs, but, when dealing with very complex and multifaceted heterogeneous systems, a methodology is needed on top of the selection of each security control that will allow the designer/maintainer to drive her/his choices to build and keep the system secure as a whole, leaving the choice of the security controls to the last step of the system design/development. This paper aims at providing a comprehensive methodological approach to design and preliminarily implement an Open Platform Architecture (OPA) to secure the cyber-physical systems of critical infrastructures. Here, the Open Platform Architecture (OPA) depicts how an already existing or under-design target system (TS) can be equipped with technologies that are modern or currently under development, to monitor and timely detect possibly dangerous situations and to react in an automatic way by putting in place suitable countermeasures. A multifaceted use case (UC) that is able to show the OPA, starting from the security and safety requirements to the fully designed system, will be developed step by step to show the feasibility and the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. The enhancement of cultural heritage for tourism can greatly benefit from the opportunities offered by Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), promoting greater interaction and integration between all stakeholders and service providers. In recent years, ICT applications and platforms have tended to provide a platform to translate the strategic goals and performance metrics of cultural heritage tourism into comprehensive services tailored to stakeholders’ needs by participating stakeholders. A successful co-designed platform integrates explicit services—requiring specialized software tools—and implicit services, facilitating evaluation processes. This adaptability ensures continuous improvement and alignment with evolving strategies and business objectives. As part of the European project, the development of the TExTOUR open ICT platform marks a significant advancement in leveraging technology within cultural tourism. It exemplifies the creation of a sustainable and adaptable framework, co-designed specifically to support and amplify the strategic objectives of cultural heritage tourism. This approach not only fosters better engagement and management within the sector but also sets a new standard for innovation in cultural tourism practices. Full article

Educational institutions are increasingly using audio-based learning resources and technologies nowadays, especially for students who are auditory learners and visually impaired. The ability to design and create online educational talking books with a pedagogical foundation has become essential for students studying instructional and information technology in the age of digital learning. With the need to enhance such skills to target students in higher educational institutions, instructional and information technology students have no specialized platform for designing and producing an online educational talking book without web programming challenges. This study suggests a new specialized, web-based platform that can assist students in developing online educational talking books. In this study, fourteen instructional technology experts evaluated the proposed platform’s usability. An online questionnaire was utilized to gather data, applying qualitative and quantitative methodologies. The results show that the proposed platform is appropriate for creating and developing an online educational talking book for the intended audience of students. Furthermore, the suggested platform’s current version had a workable design that was appropriate for helping students acquire the necessary abilities. Full article

This article seeks to reflect on the opportunities that mobile smartphones (MSPs) present as ICT integration tools in teaching geography. The more extensive study, underpinned by the Professional Development Framework for Digital Learning (PDFDL) in ICT integration, employed a qualitative research approach. Lensed by the Professional Development Framework for Digital Learning (PDFDL), the article used the qualitative approach to garner insights from the participants regarding using MSPs as tools to integrate ICT in geography teaching. Data collection tools included interviews, observations, and document reviews. Researchers sampled (n = 4) schools, interviewed and observed (n = 13) teachers, and interviewed (n = 10) learners and (n = 8) parents in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. Furthermore, they used a purposive sampling technique to access the participants, basing the research on the premise that MSPs promote virtual reality for an array of learners. As the findings revealed, although some participants viewed the use of MSPs as a distractor in the learning space, teachers felt compelled to heed the call to modify their teaching pedagogies, such that they integrated mobile phones fruitfully in their teaching. The findings further revealed that such a paradigm shift would benefit homeschooling and facilitate a dual teaching mode at learning institutions. Curriculum planners are responsible for helping teachers accept that uncertainty is the only certainty about the future, considering the volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and augmentation (VUCA) challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Extended lockdown periods accelerated the use of MSPs in teaching, requiring every stakeholder in the educational space to become a life-long learner by using a range of technologies and platforms. In recent years, the attention paid to the metaverse in the scientific world has increased; the hottest topics include system architecture and enabling technologies, as well as business, privacy, ethical, and security issues. On the other side, at the mainstream level, it is well known that the company Meta (formerly Facebook) is striving to realize its interpretation of a “social” metaverse. As Meta is a big leader of social media, it is reasonable to guess that, in the future, users will participate in a new social platform, such as that which the company is building by depicting unlimited and engaging opportunities. Regardless of Meta, we ask what the opinion of people is about this possible future scenario. A literature search of previous works about this topic has been done; the few results we found were not properly on topic and showed heterogeneous content. A survey on interpretations of the metaverse of major information and communication technologies (ICT) companies that impact the consumer world was undertaken; the results show that Meta is the most prominent company with the mission of building a ”social” metaverse worldwide. Finally, a draft of a tool for assessing the predilection of people for a “social” metaverse, based on various facets of the future social platform, is proposed. Full article

Learning and using technology in the workplace are essential for a company’s commitment to the sustainable development of its resources. Finding competent engineers who can handle information communication technologies (ICTs) is a challenge for companies. Currently, however, the ability to use these technologies is limited to technicians with specialized training, and not everyone can engage in development. Therefore, it is safe to conclude that equity in the use of technology has not yet been realized. This study aims to analyze, based on actual cases, the necessary conditions and mechanisms for people with diverse experiences and circumstances, not limited to engineers, to participate in ICT development to address human resource diversity. The use of technology such as low-code platforms (LCPs) that have recently emerged on the market has shown that nonprofessional engineers without programming training can participate in development projects. This research will be useful to managers in advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) strategies in their workplaces and contribute to organizational research regarding new trends in technology use by individuals: low codability. The findings of this study are of significant relevance to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of decent work and economic growth, as well as gender equality. Full article
