Metro systems are high-capacity urban rail networks designed to provide fast, reliable, and efficient transportation. This article presents a comparative benchmarking study of six leading metro systems in Brazil and six prominent international cases, aiming to identify best practices and recurring challenges based on key operational, planning, design, governance, and performance indicators. The Brazilian systems analyzed are located in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Fortaleza, Recife, and Salvador, while the international cases include London, Paris, Tokyo, Berlin, New York, and Madrid. The methodology combined documentary research with technical analysis of public data sources, institutional reports, and performance indicators. The results reveal significant contrasts in network scale, operational efficiency, governance models, funding mechanisms, and integration with urban planning. São Paulo’s system stands out for its network robustness, automation, and consolidated monitoring framework, while other Brazilian cities face limitations in service coverage and financial sustainability. The international cases offer valuable insights into fare integration, the use of emerging technologies, and the application of performance metrics to foster more sustainable and efficient high-capacity urban transit systems. The findings provide relevant evidence to support policymakers, transport authorities, and urban planners in improving the planning, management, and sustainability of high-capacity urban transit systems. Urban tourism has experienced significant growth driven by platforms such as Airbnb, yet the relationship between short-term rental (STR) location and guest mobility remains underexplored. In this study, a structured survey of STR guests in Madrid during 2024 was administered face-to-face through property managers and luggage-storage services to examine factors influencing public transport (PT) use. Responses on bus and metro usage were combined into a three-level ordinal variable and modeled using ordered logistic regression against tourist demographics, trip characteristics, and accommodation attributes, including geocoded location zones. The results indicate that first-time and international visitors are less likely to use PT at high levels, while tourists visiting more points of interest and those who rated PT importance highly when choosing accommodation are significantly more frequent users. Accommodation in the central almond or periphery correlates positively with higher PT use compared to the city center. Distances to transit stops were not significant predictors, reflecting overall network accessibility. These findings suggest that enhancing PT connectivity in peripheral areas could support the spatial dispersion of tourism benefits and improve sustainable mobility for STR guests. Full article

With the growth of cities, urban traffic has increased and traffic congestion has become a serious problem. Due to their characteristics, metro systems are one of the most used public transportation networks in big cities. So, optimization and planning of metro networks are challenges which governments must focus on. The objective of this study was to analyze Madrid metro network using graph theory. Through complex network theory, the main structural and topological properties of the network as well as robustness characteristics were obtained. Furthermore, to inspect these results, multivariate analysis techniques were employed, specifically HJ-Biplot. This analysis tool allowed us to explore relationships between centrality measures and to classify stations according to their centrality. Therefore, it is a multidisciplinary study that includes network analysis and multivariate analysis. The study found that closeness and eccentricity were strongly negatively correlated. In addition, the most central stations were those located in the city center, that is, there is a relationship between centrality and geographic location. In terms of robustness, a highly agglomerated community structure was found. Full article

A transportation service must be sustainable, respectful of the environment, and socially and economically responsible. These requirements make metro networks the ideal candidate as the most efficient mean of transport in our society. Now, a correct management of this type of infrastructures entails the analysis of the structure and robustness of these networks. This allows us to detect malfunctions and, above all, to design in the most appropriate way the expansion of subway networks. This is one of the major challenges facing the study of transport networks in sustainable smart cities. In this sense, the complex network analysis provides us with the necessary scientific tools to perform both quantitative and qualitative analysis of metro networks. This work deals with Madrid metro network, which is the largest in Spain. The main structural and topological characteristics, and robustness features of Madrid metro network were studied. The results obtained were analyzed and some conclusions were derived. Full article
