Background: Invasive fungal infections (IFIs) remain a major cause of morbidity and mortality among immunocompromised patients, despite advances in antifungal therapy. Conventional diagnostics are limited, highlighting the need for novel biomarkers. Circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) and cell-free DNA (cfDNA) have emerged as promising tools due to their roles in immune regulation, pathogen–host interactions, and disease monitoring. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluate their diagnostic and prognostic potential in fungal infections. Methods: A systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, SCOPUS, and EMBASE was conducted up to May 2025 in line with PRISMA guidelines (PROSPERO protocol CRD42021287150). Eligible studies included clinical research on confirmed fungal infections assessing cfDNA or miRNAs. Random-effects meta-analyses were performed for cfDNA, and miRNA findings were synthesized descriptively. Results: In total, 526 studies were included. cfDNA positivity was observed in 12% of all tested samples (95% CI: 0.06–0.22) and in 79% of patients with proven fungal infections (95% CI: 0.62–0.90), supporting its value as a minimally invasive, culture-independent diagnostic marker. Six studies on miRNAs identified disease-specific signatures, including miR-132 and miRNA panels for aspergillosis, with high diagnostic accuracy (AUC ≥ 0.98). miR-146a, miR-223, and miR-545 further correlated with prognosis and mortality. Conclusions: cfDNA and miRNAs show strong potential for early diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment monitoring in IFIs. Standardized methodologies and large-scale validation are essential for clinical translation. Full article

Background and Objectives: Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is influenced by various causes, including thyroid diseases. For example, hypothyroidism and thyroid autoimmunity can damage the inner ear through hormonal, immune, and vascular mechanisms. Vestibular disorders like Ménière’s disease (MD) and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) also show possible associations with thyroid dysfunction. Materials and Methods: A review following PRISMA guidelines searched PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar for studies linking thyroid disorders with inner ear dysfunction. Results: Out of 985 screened records, 30 studies met inclusion criteria, involving various thyroid disorders, primarily hypothyroidism and autoimmune thyroiditis. Scientific evidence supports a correlation between hypothyroidism and hearing impairment. However, some studies also suggest a link between hyperthyroidism and inner ear disorders, particularly focusing on the role of autoimmunity in this context. Concerning vestibular dysfunction, the available studies are less abundant and support a significant association between thyroid disease and Meniere’s disease. Conclusions: There is a clear correlation between hypothyroidism and auditory function. A substantial body of literature also supports an association with vestibular disorders, although some discrepancies remain. Further research is needed to elucidate the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms (e.g., autoimmune, vascular, metabolic) involved with this correlation. Full article

This study investigated the transformative potential of Compressive Sensing (CS) for optimizing multimodal biomedical signal fusion in Wireless Body Sensor Networks (WBSN), specifically targeting challenges in data storage, power consumption, and transmission bandwidth. Through a Systematic Mapping Study (SMS) and Systematic Literature Review (SLR) following the PRISMA protocol, significant advancements in adaptive CS algorithms and multimodal fusion have been achieved. However, this research also identified crucial gaps in computational efficiency, hardware scalability (particularly concerning the complex and often costly adaptive sensing hardware required for dynamic CS applications), and noise robustness for one-dimensional biomedical signals (e.g., ECG, EEG, PPG, and SCG). The findings strongly emphasize the potential of integrating CS with deep reinforcement learning and edge computing to develop energy-efficient, real-time healthcare monitoring systems, paving the way for future innovations in Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) applications. Objective: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) represents a growing and significant public health burden worldwide. The evidence regarding whether skipping breakfast affects the development of MetS and its components remains inconsistent and uncertain. This study aimed to synthesize the best available evidence regarding the association between skipping breakfast and the risk of MetS and its components. Methods: This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. We systematically searched the PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases from inception until May 2025. Two reviewers independently screened titles/abstracts and full texts, extracted data, and assessed the risk of bias. This review included cross-sectional and cohort studies on the association between breakfast skipping and the risk of MetS and its components. Results: Nine studies were included after quality evaluation by NOS. Pooled results from the meta-analysis revealed that skipping breakfast was significantly associated with an increased risk of MetS (OR: 1.10, 95% CI: 1.04–1.17) and its components—namely abdominal obesity (OR = 1.17, 95% CI 1.01–1.34), hypertension (OR: 1.21, 95% CI: 1.10–1.32), hyperlipidemia (OR: 1.13, 95% CI: 1.04–1.23), and hyperglycemia (OR = 1.26, 95% CI: 1.16–1.37). Conclusions: The meta-analysis demonstrated that skipping breakfast was significantly associated with an increased risk of MetS and its key components—abdominal obesity, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and hyperglycemia. These findings highlight regular breakfast consumption as a potential modifiable factor for preventing and managing MetS and related cardiometabolic diseases. Full article

Fire spotting (FS), the process by which firebrands are lofted, transported, and ignite new fires ahead of the main flame front, plays a critical role in escalating extreme wildfire events. This systematic literature review (SLR) analyzes peer-reviewed articles and book chapters published in English from 2000 to 2023 to assess the evolution of FS models, identify prevailing methodologies, and highlight existing gaps. Following a PRISMA-guided approach, 102 studies were selected from Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, with searches conducted up to December 2023. The results indicate a marked increase in scientific interest after 2010. Thematic and bibliometric analyses reveal a dominant research focus on integrating the FS model within existing and new fire spread models, as well as empirical research and individual FS phases, particularly firebrand transport and ignition. However, generation and ignition FS phases, physics-based FS models (encompassing all FS phases), and integrated operational models remain underexplored. Modeling strategies have advanced from empirical and semi-empirical approaches to machine learning and physical-mechanistic simulations. Despite advancements, most models still struggle to replicate the stochastic and nonlinear nature of spotting. Geographically, research is concentrated in the United States, Australia, and parts of Europe, with notable gaps in representation across the Global South. This review underscores the need for interdisciplinary, data-driven, and regionally inclusive approaches to improve the predictive accuracy and operational applicability of FS models under future climate scenarios. Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) has become an attractive option for maritime communication because it is low-cost, long-range, and energy-efficient. Yet its performance at sea is often limited by fading, interference, and the strict energy budgets of maritime Internet of Things (IoT) devices. This review, prepared in line with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines, examines 23 peer-reviewed studies published between 2019 and 2025 that explore adaptive antenna solutions for LoRaWAN in marine environments. The work covered four main categories: switched-beam, phased array, reconfigurable, and Artificial Intelligence or Machine Learning (AI/ML)-enabled antennas. Results across studies show that adaptive approaches improve gain, beam agility, and signal reliability even under unstable conditions. Switched-beam antennas dominate the literature (45%), followed by phased arrays (30%), reconfigurable designs (20%), and AI/ML-enabled systems (5%). Unlike previous reviews, this study emphasizes maritime propagation, environmental resilience, and energy use. Despite encouraging results in signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), packet delivery, and coverage range, clear gaps remain in protocol-level integration, lightweight AI for constrained nodes, and large-scale trials at sea. Research on reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) in maritime environments remains limited. However, these technologies could play an important role in enhancing spectral efficiency, coverage, and the scalability of maritime IoT networks. Full article

Background and Objectives: Vernix caseosa peritonitis (VCP) is rare. Nonspecific symptoms of acute abdomen during early puerperium make preoperative diagnosis of VCP challenging. We aimed to identify risk factors, early diagnosis and treatment options, and the association between the timing and severity of VCP diagnosis and maternal outcomes. Materials and Methods: We searched PubMed, PubMed Central, and Google Scholar. Articles were analyzed according to the PRISMA guidelines. The search items included: ‘vernix caseosa peritonitis, ‘vernix caseosa granuloma, ‘maternal meconium peritonitis’, ‘maternal meconium granuloma’, ‘vernix caseosa’, ‘peritonitis’, ‘pregnancy’, ‘puerperium’, ‘postpartum’, and ‘gravid’. Additional studies were extracted by reviewing the reference lists of retrieved studies. Demographic, clinical, obstetric, diagnostic, and treatment parameters, and outcomes were collected. Results: Out of 55 published VCP case reports, 46 were available. Most involved term pregnancies (84.8%) and were delivered by Cesarean section (CS) (87%), with no difference in parity distribution (χ2(2) = 1.1875, p = 0.5523) or fetal sex (m: f = 53.3%: 46.7%). Common symptoms included abdominal pain and fever over 38 °C, while dyspnea or tachypnea was unexpectedly frequent (23.9%/15.2%). The interval from delivery to surgery ranged from 4 to 13 days (average 8 days), with no difference between CS and vaginal deliveries. Preoperative VCP was diagnosed in only 4.3% of cases, and intraoperative diagnosis occurred in 60.9%. Intraoperative microbiology and histopathology (vernix components) were positive in 6.5% and 89.1%, respectively. The birth weight was normal (3656 ± 509 g), with no maternal or neonatal deaths. Conclusions: VCP primarily develops in term pregnancies delivered by CS, without other risk factors. Despite extremely low preoperative and unexpectedly low intraoperative diagnosis and treatment delay of several days, there is no maternal or fetal mortality. The time to symptom onset is similar between women who delivered vaginally and those who had a CS. All women with VCP after vaginal delivery had previous deliveries. Abdominal pain with a fever over 38 °C and dyspnea or tachypnea in the early puerperium suggests VCP. Surgical lavage is the primary treatment, while corticosteroids have been reported to be beneficial in several cases, and antibiotics seem to have a limited role. Full article

Background/Objectives: Worldwide, millions of infants under 6 months are at increased risk of poor growth and development, illness, and death. We investigated the coherence of global policy characteristics, vulnerability, and continuity of care, which guides the care of vulnerable infants under 6 months and their mothers. Methods: We conducted a scoping review according to PRISMA-ScR guidance. We included English publications with no time limit, applicable to low- and middle-income countries, sourced through Google Scholar, contacts, WHO and UNICEF databases, global networks, and agency websites. The search was conducted from August 2023 to February 2024. We identified 34 documents for review. We categorised policies into guidelines, namely, WHO evidence-based recommendations and multi-source guidance documents with implementation details. We consolidated 49 vulnerability descriptors into 28 vulnerability factors and four sub-groups. We did not assess policy quality. Results: We found rich but fragmented global policy guidance. Multiple terminologies create superficial differences and mask important ones. Growth appraisal was mostly limited to nutrition-oriented guidance and was lacking in health-centric documents. Continuity of care lacked scope and depth. WHO policies are out of sync with each other and the latest evidence on mortality risk markers. WHO procedures need to accommodate non-UN documents to leverage existing guidance potential. A living policy system to manage evidence-to-policy processes and policy interactions is needed. The WHO-INTEGRATE evidence for decision frameworks could help country-led adaptations, system-sensitive global support, and WHO methodological development. Conclusions: There are immediate opportunities for interdisciplinary policy cooperation. Action is urgently needed to secure coherent evidence-based policies for equitable and effective care. The custard apple (CA) is a noble fruit in tropical regions worldwide. It has attracted a growing interest due to its organoleptic properties and nutritional value. With the expansion of international trade, both its cultivation and consumption have grown significantly in recent years. Previous researchers have sporadically investigated its nutritional composition and health benefits; however, existing information on its processing and utilization is highly fragmented and lacks a comprehensive overview of its constituents, biological activities, and potential applications. This review is a detailed summary of the nutritional and bioactive properties, safety evaluations, and potential applications of CA. Following PRISMA guidelines, peer-reviewed studies published between 2000 and 2025 were systematically searched in PubMed, Scopus, ResearchGate, and Web of Science. Inclusion criteria comprised studies reporting on nutritional composition, phytochemicals, bioactivities, health promotion, and applications of CA. In addition to primary nutrients like carbohydrates, protein, fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals, CA also contains a multitude of bioactive compounds, mainly including phenols, flavonoids, terpenoids, acetogenins, and alkaloids, which are attributed to a range of health benefits, such as antioxidant, anti-microbial, anti-tumor, blood sugar regulation, and cognitive function improvement. However, more clinical and toxicological profiles remain underexplored, and future research should focus on standardized extraction, safety evaluation, and translational applications. Additionally, the challenges and future perspectives in industrial applications are discussed, which are expected to offer comprehensive information for the utilization of CA. Full article

Optimal recovery supports health and enhances performance in soccer players, yet the empirical evidence on various recovery strategies in soccer is complex to interpret. This review aimed to summarize the literature on post-exercise recovery modalities in male and female soccer players of all ages and competition levels. Following PRISMA guidelines, PubMed, SPORTDiscuss, and Web of Science were systematically searched until 17 October 2023. Randomized controlled trials or within-subjects crossover design studies that examined the effects of post-exercise recovery interventions on physical, psychological, or performance outcomes in soccer players were included. A single reviewer extracted data and assessed study quality using the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) scale. Overall, 41 studies were included in the final review. The recovery strategies represented in these studies were organized into the following categories: active recovery, blood flow restriction, cold water immersion, contrast water therapy, compression garments, active cool-down, cryotherapy, cold garments, sleep and daytime nap, pneumatic cooling, foam rolling, mindfulness interventions, nutritional intervention, and static stretching. The findings demonstrated that cold-water immersion consistently improved jump performance and perceptions of fatigue, soreness, and overall well-being. Other recovery strategies, such as active recovery, compression therapy, sleep interventions, and nutrition supplementation, also positively impacted recovery, albeit with varying levels of effectiveness and evidence. However, the studies exhibited heterogeneity in methods, outcome measures, and recovery intervention protocols, posing challenges for generalizability. This review summarizes recovery strategies for soccer players, emphasizing the need for practitioners, coaches, and athletes to individualize interventions based on athletes’ needs, preferences, and competition level. Sustainable development goals were laid out by the United Nations in 2015 as a means to address the profound issues present in the world by 2030. Nations have been encouraged to make amendments to their policies and frameworks by adding the SDGs to promote sustainability. In this era, where nations look for sustainable solutions, 3D printing has emerged as a revolutionary technology that has the potential to aid in accomplishing the SDGs. Advancements and developments in technology have boosted manufacturing efficiency and provide the pathway to achieving the set targets of multiple SDGs. Thus, this article looked into the potential contribution of 3D printing towards Sustainable Development Goal 13—Climate Action. A comprehensive literature review was performed using the PRISMA framework to understand the latest advancements in 3D printing and how 3D printing has been used to achieve the SDG targets. Moreover, an exploration of the impact of 3D printing on SDG 13 was performed. The potential impact topics explored include the reduction in GHG emissions using sustainable AM, decentralized manufacturing, resilient infrastructure to climatic hazards, the circular economy and product lifecycle extension. Qualitative analysis was conducted by looking into the effects of the SDGs on both the environmental and socio-technical aspects. Challenges in the implementation of AM within different economic sectors and its potential solutions are discussed in this article. The literature review and qualitative analysis pointed to a strong correlation between SDG 13 and 3D printing, paving the way for a sustainable future. Full article

In accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, this systematic review analyzed 73 publications (1997–2025) to summarize advancements in robotic aircraft skin inspection, focusing on the integrated pipeline from data acquisition to defect analysis. The review included studies on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs) for external skin inspection, which present clear technical contributions, while excluding internal inspections and non-technical reports. Literature was retrieved from IEEE conferences, journals, and other academic databases, and key findings were summarized via the categorical analysis of motion planning, perception modules, and defect detection algorithms. Key limitations identified include the fragmentation of core technical modules, unresolved bottlenecks in dynamic environments, challenges in weak-texture and all-weather perception, and a lack of mature integrated systems with practical validation. The study concludes by advocating for future research in multi-robot heterogeneous collaborative systems, intelligent dynamic task scheduling, large model-based airworthiness assessment, and the expansion of inspection scenarios, all aimed at achieving fully autonomous and reliable operations. Objectives: To systematically review and analyze electronic systems in competitive motorcycles (2020-2025), examining their technical specifications, performance impacts, and technological evolution across MotoGP, World Superbike (WSBK), MotoE, British Superbike (BSB), and Spanish Championship (ESBK) categories. Eligibility criteria: Included studies reporting technical specifications or performance data of electronic systems in professional motorcycle racing, published between January 2020 and December 2025 in English, Spanish, Italian, or Japanese. Excluded: opinion pieces, amateur racing, and studies without quantitative data. Information sources: IEEE Xplore, SAE Technical Papers, Web of Science, Scopus, and specialized motorsport databases were searched through December 15, 2025. Risk of bias: Modified Cochrane Risk of Bias tool for experimental studies and Newcastle-Ottawa Scale for observational studies. Synthesis of results: Synthesis of results: Random-effects meta-analysis using DerSimonian-Laird method for homogeneous outcomes; narrative synthesis for heterogeneous data. The complete PRISMA 2020 checklist is provided in Appendix . Included studies: 87 studies met inclusion criteria (52 experimental, 38 simulation, 23 technical descriptions, 14 comparative analyses). Electronic systems were categorized into six domains: Engine Control Units (ECU, 28 studies, 22%), Vehicle Dynamics (23 studies, 18%), Traction Control (19 studies, 15%), Data Acquisition (21 studies, 17%), Braking Systems (18 studies, 14%), and Emerging Technologies (18 studies, 14%). Note that studies could address multiple domains. Limitations of evidence: Proprietary restrictions limited access to 31% of technical details; 43% lacked cross-category comparisons. Interpretation: Electronic systems are primary performance differentiators, with computational power following Moore’s Law. Future developments point toward distributed architectures and 5G telemetry. Lung-protective ventilation and other experimental conditions raise arterial carbon dioxide tension (PaCO2) and alter pH. Short-term benefits are reported in non-infectious settings, whereas infection and/or prolonged exposure are typically harmful. This scoping review systematically maps immune-mediated effects of hypercapnia on innate immunity and alveolar epithelial repair. Scoping review per Levac et al. and PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews (Open Science Framework protocol: 10.17605/OSF.IO/WV85T; post hoc). We searched original preclinical studies (in vivo/in vitro) in PubMed, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Cochrane Reviews, and SciELO (2008–2023). PaCO2 (mmHg) was prioritized; %Fraction of inspired Carbon Dioxide (%FiCO2) was recorded when PaCO2 was unavailable; pH was classified as buffered/unbuffered. Data were organized by context, PaCO2, and exposure duration; synthesis used heat maps (0–120 h) and a narrative description for >120 h. Mechanistic axes extracted the following: NF-κB (canonical/non-canonical), Bcl-2/Bcl-xL–Beclin-1/autophagy, AMPK/PKA/CaMKKβ/ERK1/2 and ENaC/Na,K-ATPase trafficking, Wnt/β-catenin in AT2 cells, and miR-183/IDH2/ATP. Thirty-five studies met the inclusion criteria. In non-infectious models, a “protective window” emerged, with moderate PaCO2 and brief exposure (65–95 mmHg; ≤4–6 h), featuring NF-κB attenuation and preserved epithelial ion transport. In infectious models and/or with prolonged exposure or higher PaCO2, harmful signals predominated: reduced phagocytosis/autophagy (Bcl-2/Bcl-xL–Beclin-1 axis), AMPK/PKA/ERK1/2-mediated internalization of ENaC/Na,K-ATPase, depressed β-catenin signaling in AT2 cells, impaired alveolar fluid clearance, and increased bacterial burden. Chronic exposures (>120 h) reinforced injury. Hypercapnia is a context-, dose-, time-, and pH-dependent double-edged modulator. The safe window is narrow; standardized, parallel reporting of PaCO2 and pH—with explicit comparisons of buffered vs. unbuffered hypercapnia—is essential to guide clinical translation. Full article

Prevalence and Mortality Outcomes of Melioidosis in Thalassemia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Background. Melioidosis is a severe infection caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei and is endemic in regions with a high prevalence of thalassemia. Patients with thalassemia are thought to be at increased risk due to iron overload, splenectomy, and immune dysfunction. However, the pooled prevalence and mortality outcomes of melioidosis in this population remain unclear. Methods. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis in accordance with PRISMA 2020 guidelines (PROSPERO: CRD420251108294). PubMed, Embase, and Scopus were searched from inception to July 2025. Observational studies reporting prevalence or mortality of melioidosis in patients with thalassemia were eligible. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) for mortality were calculated using random-effects models, with subgroup and sensitivity analyses based on age, thalassemia subtype, and study quality. Results. Six retrospective studies including 7529 melioidosis patients, of whom 173 had thalassemia, were analyzed. The prevalence of thalassemia among melioidosis cases ranged from 0.5% to 40.7%. Mortality among thalassemia patients varied from 0% to 100%. Pooled analysis demonstrated no significant excess mortality compared with non-thalassemia controls (OR 0.55, 95% CI 0.16–1.89; I2 = 44.9%). Sensitivity analysis restricted to moderate- and high-quality studies showed a significantly lower risk of death (OR 0.23, 95% CI 0.15–0.36; I2 = 0%). Subgroup analyses by thalassemia subtype and age revealed no clear effect modification, although power was limited. Conclusions. Despite biological plausibility, thalassemia was not associated with increased melioidosis mortality. These findings suggest that closer clinical monitoring, iron chelation, and comorbidity profiles may influence outcomes. Prospective, well-characterized cohort studies are needed to refine risk stratification and guide management in endemic regions. Full article
