Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) were originally designed for military and surveillance applications but are now significant in smart agriculture, wireless communication, and product delivery. In contrast to an Internet Service Provider (ISP), which typically relies on fixed base stations, which can fail in the event of a disaster, UAVs offer more stable alternatives. Because IoT devices, sensors, and ground users have limited processing power and battery life, there is a need for energy-efficient solutions. Meanwhile, users still expect high data rates. UAV-based wireless networks can meet these needs, even in harsh or disaster-hit areas. Current research focuses on improving energy efficiency and data transmission by optimizing UAV flight paths and scheduling. In this work, we tackle these issues by formulating a mixed-integer non-convex optimization problem that jointly considers device scheduling and UAV trajectory. We further decompose it into the following two parts: energy-efficient scheduling among ground users (P2) and the trajectory optimization of UAVs (P3). To address these issues, we develop a linear programming relaxation approach, a Quadratically Constrained Quadratic Programming (QCQP)-based Successive Convex Approximation (SCA) scheme, and the Block Coordinate Descent (BCD) algorithm. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach outperforms the state of the art in both power consumption and transmission rate. Full article

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for environmental monitoring typically rely on embedded platforms with limited computational capacity, which constrains the deployment of highly accurate yet computationally demanding object-detection models. To address this challenge and enable real-time image recognition under resource limitations, this study develops three lightweight neural network architectures based on the YOLOv11 framework. The proposed designs aim to significantly reduce computational complexity and parameter count while maintaining stable and reliable detection performance, thereby improving inference efficiency and deployment flexibility on UAV platforms. YOLOv11-M is selected as the baseline model due to its favorable trade-off between detection accuracy and inference speed. Three lightweight strategies are then proposed and evaluated. First, a Ghost Convolution approach replaces portions of standard convolution with low-cost linear operations, effectively reducing both parameter size and computational overhead during feature extraction. Second, MobileNetV4 is employed as the backbone network; its optimized bottleneck structures and attention mechanisms enable substantial model compression without compromising recognition performance. Third, a MobileOne architecture with reparameterization is introduced, in which multi-branch structures enhance feature learning during training and are subsequently merged into a single-path network for inference, thereby significantly reducing computational cost and improving practical deployability. Mechanized timber harvesting on steep slopes causes soil disturbance; however, comprehensive post-harvest assessment remains challenging because terrain complexity and safety constraints render traditional field-based methods labor-intensive, spatially limited, and difficult to implement systematically. In this study, we developed and evaluated a convolutional neural network-based semantic segmentation model for detecting soil disturbances using high-resolution unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imagery in a steep-slope harvested area (2.50 ha, mean slope of 53.4%) in Republic of Korea. A U-Net semantic segmentation model was trained on manually annotated orthomosaic tiles incorporating RGB and digital elevation model (DEM) inputs. Ensemble predictions at an optimized threshold of 0.65 achieved Intersection over Union (IoU) of 0.55 and F1-score of 0.71. Although moderate, these values reflect the inherently challenging conditions of steep-slope forest terrain compared to similar studies conducted under gentler terrain. DEM-derived depth estimation enabled severity classification of the detected disturbances, with light disturbances predominating. Field validation using 38 pinboard measurements demonstrated reliable spatial detection (ρ = 0.567, RMSE = 6.45 cm). This approach provides an effective alternative to traditional monitoring practices in mountainous forests, where systematic trail planning is impractical, and may support evidence-based assessment of harvesting impacts for sustainable forest management. Road maintenance remains one of the most resource-intensive and hazardous operations in infrastructure management. Traditional inspection practices rely heavily on manual labour and discrete procedures, often resulting in limited scalability, operator exposure to traffic hazards, and inefficiencies in data collection. This paper presents a novel automated methodology that integrates Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) to enable automated inspection and measurement of road assets through a digital twin (DT) system. The system leverages data fusion and real-time synchronisation between field agents and a centralised digital twin to monitor the retro-reflectivity of vertical and horizontal signage, detect obstacles and vegetation, and support data-driven maintenance planning. A case study conducted on the Italian highway network demonstrated improvements in operational safety, inspection efficiency, and measurement consistency. The results confirm that the integration of UAVs and AMRs within a digital twin framework can significantly improve sustainability, productivity, and workers’ safety in road maintenance operations. The operational safety and endurance of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are strongly affected by lithium-ion battery degradation under extreme thermal environments. However, conventional physics-based models often rely on simplified assumptions, whereas purely data-driven methods usually lack physical interpretability and robust generalization. To address these limitations, this study proposes a Physics-Informed Deep Neural Network (PIDNN) for predicting UAV battery degradation under complex environmental conditions. The proposed framework integrates thermodynamic and fluid dynamic principles with deep neural networks by incorporating physical constraints derived from heat generation, heat conduction, and convective heat transfer into the loss function. This design enables the model to capture nonlinear degradation patterns while maintaining consistency with fundamental physical laws. Comprehensive simulation-based experiments were conducted under high-temperature (45 °C), low-temperature (−20 °C), and room-temperature (25 °C) conditions, together with varying discharge rates, humidity levels, wind speeds, and multi-factor coupled scenarios. The results show that the proposed PIDNN consistently outperforms conventional physics-based models and several representative data-driven methods, including SVM, LSTM, and GAN-based approaches. It achieves lower prediction errors across all evaluated conditions, as reflected by reduced mean absolute error and root mean square error. By providing physically consistent predictions of capacity fade, internal resistance growth, and remaining useful life, the proposed framework supports degradation-aware monitoring and early warning for intelligent battery management systems. These findings provide a robust methodological basis for improving the reliability, safety, and service life of UAV power systems operating in complex climatic environments. Full article

Geomagnetic navigation is a promising alternative for positioning and localization of UAV swarm systems in GNSS-denied environments. However, strong and heterogeneous electromagnetic interference generated by onboard power, propulsion, and electronic subsystems severely degrades magnetic measurement fidelity, limiting the achievable accuracy of cooperative UAV swarm navigation. To address this challenge, this paper proposes PG-TLNet, a physics-guided aeromagnetic interference compensation framework based on the extended Tolles–Lawson (T–L) model. By integrating onboard state information (current, voltage, and attitude) with magnetic measurements through physics-consistency constraints and a lightweight multi-branch convolutional neural network, the framework enables robust real-time compensation under strong and time-varying interference while remaining suitable for resource-constrained UAV nodes. Experimental validation using multiple scalar magnetometers under heterogeneous interference conditions, with amplitudes up to 1000 nT, shows that PG-TLNet consistently outperforms the conventional T–L model across all sensing nodes, maintaining residual magnetic interference at approximately 0–30 nT under long-duration and highly dynamic operations. The proposed method achieves an improvement ratio (IR) of up to 15 with an end-to-end inference latency below 94 μs. These results indicate that PG-TLNet meets the practical measurement fidelity requirements for geomagnetic navigation in GNSS-denied environments. By ensuring reliable and consistent magnetic measurements at the individual UAV node level, the proposed framework establishes a practical sensing foundation for geomagnetic navigation and distributed magnetic sensing in UAV swarm systems operating in GNSS-denied environments. In response to the significantly reduced efficiency of magnetic coupling wireless charging for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) caused by their high sensitivity to transmitter and receiver coil alignment, as well as landing point errors, a position identification method based on the detection coil-induced voltage fingerprint and embedded neural network regression is proposed. This enables position alignment through a 2D mechanical structure. Firstly, by means of an S–S compensation topology with a bipolar (BP) symmetrical four-detection-coil array deployed at the transmitter, the system effectively suppresses primary direct coupling, ensuring that the position of the receiver coil predominantly determines the detection signals. Secondly, by establishing a voltage fingerprint database during the offline stage and utilizing a multi-layer perceptron–radial basis function (MLP-RBF) regression model, the system achieves high-precision end-to-end positioning and alignment control during the online stage through induced voltage acquisition and data processing. Finally, experiments demonstrate that the proposed method achieves centimeter-level positioning accuracy, with an average error of approximately 1.2 cm and a maximum error of less than 1.8 cm, presenting excellent deployability and engineering applicability. Retrieving farmland soil water content with both high accuracy and physical interpretability remains a significant challenge, particularly for winter wheat. To bridge the gap between purely empirical data-driven approaches and mechanistic scattering models, this study proposed a novel hybrid framework that integrates an improved water cloud model (IWCM) with machine learning algorithms. Multi-modal unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) experiments were conducted during the heading stage of winter wheat over two consecutive years (2024–2025) using a synchronized system equipped with a miniature synthetic aperture radar (MiniSAR) and a multi-spectral sensor. The core innovation of the proposed framework lies in the IWCM, which explicitly decouples vegetation and soil scattering contributions by incorporating fractional vegetation cover, thereby deriving physically meaningful soil backscatter coefficients from complex microwave signals. Unlike traditional methods that treat remote sensing variables as black box inputs, our approach employed these physics-derived features to guide data-driven modeling. Four feature input schemes including spectral reflectance, vegetation indices, MiniSAR polarimetric parameters, and their multi-source fusion were systematically evaluated using back propagation neural network (BPNN) and random forest (RF) regressors. The results demonstrated that the proposed framework significantly enhances retrieval performance. Notably, the RF model driven by spectral band reflectance within this physically constrained architecture achieved optimal accuracy, with a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.865, a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.0152, and a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.0197. Compared to purely empirical approaches, the IWCM significantly improved the physical interpretability of microwave polarimetric characteristics, enabling the multi-source data fusion to better represent the interactions among vegetation, soil, and microwave scattering. This study demonstrated that integrating mechanistic models with multi-source UAV remote sensing data not only improves soil water content retrieval accuracy in winter wheat fields but also provides a valuable reference for developing operationally applicable and physically interpretable farmland soil water content monitoring systems. RGBT tracking holds irreplaceable value in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) ground observation missions, effectively supporting scenarios such as nighttime monitoring and low-altitude reconnaissance. However, existing frameworks based on CNNs or Transformers face inherent trade-offs between interaction capabilities and computational efficiency. Furthermore, current methods perform poorly in challenging scenarios involving target scale variations and rapid motion from UAV perspectives. To address these issues, this paper proposes a novel multimodal interaction and fusion Mamba network (MIFMNet), which achieves fundamental innovations relative to existing RGB-T fusion trackers and recent Mamba-based tracking methods. Different from existing RGB-T trackers that rely on CNN’s local convolution or Transformer’s quadratic-complexity self-attention for cross-modal fusion, MIFMNet departs from these architectures and designs modality-adaptive interaction mechanisms based on Mamba, fully leveraging the complementary information while resolving the efficiency-accuracy trade-off. Specifically, this paper designs the scale differential enhanced Mamba (SDEM), which expands the receptive field through multiscale parallel convolutions while amplifying complementary information via differential strategies to enhance feature responses to scale-varying objects. Furthermore, we propose flow-guided multilayer interaction Mamba (FMIM), which integrates inter-frame motion information into scanning prediction. This enables the network to adaptively adjust interaction priorities between shallow texture and high-level semantic features based on motion intensity, mitigating early information forgetting and enhancing robustness in dynamic scenes. Extensive experiments on four major benchmarks demonstrate that MIFMNet achieves state-of-the-art performance on precision and success rate, particularly excelling in UAV scenarios involving occlusion, scale variations, and rapid motion. Simultaneously, it achieves an inference speed of 35.3 FPS, enabling efficient deployment on resource-constrained platforms, thereby providing robust support for UAV applications of RGBT tracking. Remote sensing (RS) object detection faces intrinsic challenges arising from the overhead imaging paradigm and the diversity of climatic conditions. In particular, atmospheric phenomena such as clouds and haze cause severe visual degradation, making reliable object detection difficult. However, most existing detectors are developed under clear-weather conditions, which limits their generalization capability in realistic haze-degraded RS scenarios. To alleviate this issue, an adaptive spectral-aware network for RS object detection under haze interference is proposed, termed RShDet, which is designed to handle both high-altitude RS imagery and low-altitude Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) scenarios. Firstly, the Object-Centered Dynamic Enhancement (OCDE) module dynamically adjusts the spatial positions of key-value pairs through query-agnostic offsets, enabling the network to emphasize object-relevant regions while suppressing haze-induced background interference. Secondly, the Dynamic Multi-Spectral Perception and Filtering (DSPF) module introduces a multi-spectral attention mechanism that adaptively selects informative frequency components, thereby enhancing discriminative feature representations in hazy environments. Thirdly, the Frequency-Domain Multi-Feature Fusion (FDMF) module employs learnable weights to complementarily integrate amplitude and phase information in the frequency domain, enabling effective cross-task feature interaction between the enhancement and detection branches. Extensive experiments demonstrate that RShDet consistently achieves superior detection performance under hazy conditions across both synthetic and real-world benchmarks. Specifically, it achieves improvements of 2.4% mAP50 on Hazy-DOTA, 1.9% mAP on HazyDet, and 2.33% mAP on the real-world foggy dataset RTTS, surpassing existing state-of-the-art methods. Full article

Wind turbine blade surface defect detection remains challenging due to large variations in defect scales, blurred edge textures, and severe interference from complex backgrounds, which often lead to insufficient detection accuracy and high false and missed detection rates. To address these issues, this paper proposes an improved RTDETR-based detection framework, termed CEA-DETR, for wind turbine blade surface defect inspection. First, a Cross-Scale Multi-Edge feature Extraction (CSME) backbone is designed by integrating multi-scale pooling and edge-enhancement units with a dual-domain feature selection mechanism, enabling effective extraction of fine-grained texture and edge features across different scales. Second, an Efficient Multi-Scale Feature Fusion Network (EMSFFN) is constructed to facilitate deep cross-level feature interaction through adaptive weighted fusion and multi-scale convolutional structures, thereby enhancing the representation of multi-scale defects. Furthermore, an adaptive sparse self-attention mechanism is introduced to reconstruct the AIFI module, strengthening global dependency modeling and guiding the network to focus on critical defect regions under complex background conditions. Experimental results demonstrate that CEA-DETR achieves mAP50 and mAP50:95 of 89.4% and 68.9%, respectively, representing improvements of 3.1% and 6.5% over the RT-DETR-r18 baseline. Meanwhile, the proposed model reduces computational cost (GFLOPs) by 20.1% and parameter count by 8.1%. These advantages make CEA-DETR more suitable for deployment on resource-constrained unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), enabling efficient and real-time autonomous inspection of wind turbine blades. Firstly, we establish an integrated channel model for multi-user communication and multi-moving-target sensing. Secondly, we design the ISAC signal and analyze the target echo signal. We propose a multiple moving-target sensing method to achieve the joint accurate estimation of the target angle of departure (AOD), radial velocity, and distance. Specifically, to solve the problems of limited-angle scanning resolution and grid error in parameter estimation, we adopt the weighted fusion interpolation algorithm and the iteratively reweighted compressed sensing (CS) algorithm to optimize the parameter estimation performance of multiple moving targets. The rapid growth of Internet of Things (IoT) and Industrial IoT applications has intensified the demand for low-latency and reliable computation support for deadline-constrained periodic real-time tasks. While unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) enabling mobile edge computing (MEC) can reduce latency by bringing compute closer to data sources, terrestrial MEC deployments often suffer from limited coverage and poor adaptability to spatially heterogeneous demand. In this paper, we study a multiple-UAV-assisted MEC system serving cluster-based IoT networks, where cluster heads generate deadline-constrained periodic tasks for offloading under strict deadlines. To ensure practical feasibility in dense urban environments, we benchmark UAV mobility using a realistic 3D collision avoidance navigation graph with shortest-path execution, rather than assuming unconstrained continuous UAV motion in free space. On top of this benchmark, we systematically compare three multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) paradigms for joint navigation and periodic task offloading: (i) continuous 3D control MARL that outputs motion commands directly; (ii) discrete graph-based MARL that selects collision-free shortest paths; and (iii) asynchronous macro-action MARL. Using a high-fidelity 3D digital twin of San Francisco, we evaluate these paradigms under a unified protocol in terms of offloading success, end-to-end latency, and energy consumption. The results reveal clear performance trade-offs induced by realistic 3D collision avoidance constraints and provide actionable insights for designing UAV-assisted MEC systems supporting periodic real-time task offloading. Remote sensing images acquired by UAVs under nighttime or low-illumination conditions suffer from insufficient illumination, leading to degraded image quality, detail loss, and noise, which restrict their application in public security and disaster emergency scenarios. Although existing machine learning-based enhancement methods can recover part of the missing information, they often cause color distortion and texture inconsistency. This study proposes an improved low-illumination image enhancement method based on a Weakly Paired Image Dataset (WPID), combining the Hierarchical Deep Convolutional Generative Adversarial Network (HDCGAN) with a low-rank image fusion strategy to enhance the quality of low-illumination UAV remote sensing images. First, YCbCr color channel separation is applied to preserve color information from visible images. Then, a Low-Rank Representation Fusion Network (LRRNet) is employed to perform structure-aware fusion between thermal infrared (TIR) and visible images, thereby enabling effective preservation of structural details and realistic color appearance. Furthermore, a weakly paired training mechanism is incorporated into HDCGAN to enhance detail restoration and structural fidelity. To achieve objective evaluation, a structural consistency assessment framework is constructed based on semantic segmentation results from the Segment Anything Model (SAM). Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art approaches in both visual quality and application-oriented evaluation metrics. Full article

As mobile networks increasingly support sustainable and green Internet of Things (IoT) applications, energy-efficient solutions that address coverage constraints have become paramount. Although backscatter communication (BackCom) offers a low-power option for IoT devices, particularly battery-less IoT nodes, it can suffer from limited coverage. To overcome this, we exploit aerial platforms (UAVs) integrated with non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) to enhance both coverage and spectral efficiency. In this paper, we propose a UAV-supported NOMA-enabled BackCom system to serve massive backscatter node (BN) networks. We aim to maximize system throughput by jointly optimizing the power allocation and reflection coefficients of the BNs, along with the trajectory and data collection locations of the UAV. We derive closed-form solutions for the reflection coefficients and the optimal collection locations of the UAV and achieve global optimality in power allocation by utilizing the Karush–Kuhn–Tucker (KKT) optimality conditions in conjunction with the golden-section search (GSS). In addition, we formulate the UAV trajectory optimization problem as a Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) and propose an efficient low-complexity genetic algorithm (GA)-based solution. The numerical results demonstrate that the proposed scheme outperforms the benchmark schemes in terms of sum-throughput rate and achieves an overall performance enhancement of 8.983 dB, underscoring the potential of our approach for large-scale battery-less IoT deployments.
