Farm-to-school initiatives, including school gardens, are an increasingly popular strategy to increase student access to healthy produce and nutrition education opportunities. While studies show school garden programs and garden-enhanced nutrition education can positively impact student consumption of fruits and vegetables, there is a gap in evaluation tools that can be used by practitioners across varied school sites, grades, and communities, to assess outcomes of their garden programs. This effort piloted the Student Garden Retrospective Survey (SGR) for grades 4+ in four classrooms in two counties in California. The instrument included items to measure program exposure, garden skill experiences, changes in students’ behaviors, preferences, and attitudes, as well as their perceptions of the program. Student and teacher feedback on the evaluation tool was gathered to determine if students understood the questions being asked, were able to complete the survey, and whether the evaluation questions were pertinent to their school gardening experiences. The results demonstrate that the SGR is suitable for evaluating school garden and garden-enhanced nutrition education programming. In the future, the evaluation tool can be used by practitioners to iteratively improve garden-based education to enhance students’ nutrition and health outcomes. Full article

Background/Objectives: Whole food, plant-based (WFPB) diets have been associated with reduced cardiovascular risk and enhanced overall health. However, nutrition education in medical training remains limited. This study evaluated an experiential WFPB intervention known as the “Plant Plunge.” Methods: A total of 64 medical student participants attended weekly one-hour nutrition seminars on campus led by a local nonprofit, received complimentary WFPB lunches, and were encouraged to eat a WFPB diet for four weeks. Semi-structured interviews explored program perceptions. Pre- and post-intervention assessments measured nutrition knowledge, and a post-program survey assessed attitudes toward the intervention. Results: We analyzed a total of 14 interviews, 25 pre- and post-intervention knowledge assessments, and 49 post-intervention surveys. Qualitative analysis identified seven major themes: (1) improved physical health outcomes; (2) increased awareness of nutrition’s role in medicine; (3) concerns about feasibility and accessibility of WFPB diets; (4) personal empowerment and behavioral change; (5) educational value of seminars; (6) social engagement and peer support; and (7) relevance to future clinical practice. Mean scores on the knowledge assessment significantly improved from 73.3% to 87.0% (p = 0.045) following the Plant Plunge. Survey responses revealed that 65% of participants agreed that they increased knowledge of food ingredients, 54% indicated increased likelihood of selecting plant-based options, and 43% agreed that finding WFPB foods was easy, with 16% disagreeing. Conclusions: The Plant Plunge improved medical students’ nutrition knowledge, dietary attitudes, and perceived readiness for lifestyle counseling while offering an experiential model of nutrition education. Short, experiential nutrition programs may serve as scalable approaches to strengthen nutrition training and support chronic disease prevention. Full article

Climate change is the greatest health threat of the 21st century, with healthcare contributing approximately 4–5% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Decarbonising healthcare, the deliberate reduction of emissions across all healthcare activities, is essential to reduce the health sector’s environmental impact while maintaining equitable, high-quality care. Preparing future health professionals for sustainable, low-carbon practice is increasingly recognised as critical; however, education on healthcare decarbonisation remains inconsistent and weakly embedded in curricula. This scoping review mapped existing educational resources for pre-registration health profession students. Following the JBI methodology, six databases (Scopus, Web of Science, MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and GreenFILE) were searched in April 2025 (updated in October 2025). Data were thematically analysed. In total, 32 studies met inclusion criteria, comprising 17 mixed-methods, 11 quantitative, and 4 qualitative designs. Most interventions were multimodal, addressing sustainability or climate change through simulation, digital, formal, or didactic methods. Knowledge and attitudes were the most frequently evaluated outcomes. Thematic analysis identified knowledge and awareness, attitudes and emotional responses, behavioural intent and action, identity formation through collaborative learning, and barriers to decarbonisation. Findings suggest that blended, interactive, and technology-enhanced education improves knowledge, attitudes, and identity, but sustained impact requires longitudinal, skills-based, and policy-aligned interventions to drive meaningful healthcare decarbonisation action. Coastal ecosystems are among the most biodiverse and economically valuable environments on Earth, yet they face escalating threats from climate change, development, and resource exploitation. Traditional conservation approaches have proven insufficient to address the systemic drivers of biodiversity loss, calling for transformative change that fundamentally reconfigures social–ecological systems. This semi-structured systematic literature review synthesizes current knowledge on transformative change in coastal biodiversity conservation, guided by the Social–Ecological Systems Framework (SESF) and expanded to include behavioral transformation as a central dimension. Behavioral transformation is defined as the sustained embedding of new attitudes, norms, and practices within governance, institutional, and community settings. Through a comprehensive review of academic databases (SCOPUS, Web of Science, CAB Abstracts) and gray literature, 134 studies published between 2010 and 2024 were analyzed. The synthesis identifies four interdependent pathways of transformation: (1) governance innovation and power redistribution, (2) behavioral change and stakeholder engagement, (3) socio-ecological restructuring, and (4) normative and cultural shifts in human–nature relations. Successful initiatives integrate trust-building, social justice, and participatory decision-making, linking behavioral change with institutional redesign and adaptive management. However, critical gaps remain in understanding long-term durability, equity outcomes, and scalability across governance levels. The review proposes three research priorities: (1) embedding behavioral science in conservation design, (2) employing longitudinal and cross-scale analyses, and (3) advancing adaptive, learning-based governance to enhance socio-ecological resilience. South Africa, like many other emerging economies, has witnessed a growing awareness of climate change in recent years, driven by school-based initiatives, media coverage, and non-governmental campaigns. However, evidence indicates that this awareness does not consistently translate into green purchasing behaviour. Drawing on quantitative data collected from 384 respondents residing in urban and semi-urban areas of the Eastern Cape Province, this study examines the impact of consumer attention to green communication, green attitudes, and awareness of climate change on green purchasing behaviour after controlling for demographic variable effects (gender, age, education and income level). Primary data were obtained through a survey and statistically analysed using SMART-PLS 4 software. The results of the structural equation modelling reveal that consumer attention and green attitude significantly influence green purchasing behaviour, consistent with the Theory of Planned Behaviour. In contrast, awareness of climate change exhibits a non-significant negative effect on green purchase behaviour, an outcome that diverges from existing empirical evidence, which generally reports positive associations between these variables in other emerging economies. This finding suggests that in contexts where poverty and income inequality persist, increasing awareness of climate change may paradoxically correspond with a reduction in green purchasing. The study recommends implementing strategies to enhance access to eco-friendly products and reduce their cost, thereby improving affordability in resource-constrained nations. Full article

Background: Cochlear implants (CIs) are a life-changing treatment for individuals with severe to profound hearing loss, yet adult CI uptake remains low despite high clinical and economic effectiveness. This study investigates adult patient experiences, adaptation, and barriers to CI access in Saudi Arabia. Methods: A survey of 89 adult CI recipients was conducted across three major CI centers in Saudi Arabia. The electronic questionnaire explored pre- and post-implant experiences, including referral pathways, device choice, adaptation, and satisfaction. Descriptive statistics, ranked correlations, and inferential tests were used to analyze associations between demographic and clinical variables. Results: The median time between hearing loss diagnosis and implantation was 17 years, with most patients using hearing aids beforehand. Healthcare professionals were the primary source of CI interest for 48% of respondents, though younger recipients were more often influenced by peers. Longer daily device use was linked to faster acclimatization (ρ = −0.26, p < 0.05); however, age, wait time, and initial attitude did not affect adaptation. Outcomes exceeded expectations for 54% of participants. Major barriers included lack of awareness (23%) and fear of surgery (18%). Only 4% learned about CI through social media. Advice for future candidates emphasized confidence and proactive action. Conclusions: Despite expanded CI availability in Saudi Arabia, structural and societal barriers persist. Empowering healthcare professionals and utilizing social media for awareness may enhance adult CI uptake and improve hearing health outcomes. Full article

Despite global progress toward gender parity in education, Ghanaian girls continue to face systemic barriers rooted in entrenched parental gender norms. This paper explores how parental gender norm beliefs and attitudes perpetuate disparities among school-aged, particularly disadvantaging girls in access to and retention in education. Using a desk review methodology, we analyzed peer-reviewed social science and development literature, legal documents, and international reports from organizations such as the United Nations and the World Bank to explore the structural and cultural dynamics affecting girls’ education in Ghana. Anchored in Social Impact Theory, Parental Ethnotheories, and Expectation States Theory, the study provides a multi-theoretical lens to understand how gender norms, cultural expectations, and parental beliefs converge to influence educational outcomes for girls. Analysis of sociocultural norms, economic trade-offs, and safety concerns reveals how parents—often guided by love and pragmatism—prioritize sons’ education while withdrawing daughters for caregiving, early marriages, or income-generating labor. The study highlights three critical dimensions: (1) the economic reasoning behind gendered investments in children’s schooling, (2) sociocultural gender norms limiting girls’ retention in school, and (3) the transformative potential of educated women as community leaders challenging these patterns. Evidence shows that educating girls yields broad benefits, from improved health outcomes to economic growth, yet systemic inequities remain. Findings underscore the need for interventions to move beyond school access to address the familial and cultural ecosystems shaping parental decisions. By disrupting entrenched gender norms, Ghana can advance SDGs 4 and 5 and promote long-term societal change. Full article

(1) Background/Purpose: Our research focuses on stakeholders’ attitudes in the Slovak SME sector, which we assessed through a questionnaire. The ability to evolve and adapt continuously is critical for micro-enterprises in competitive markets. (2) Study Design/Methodology/Approach: The primary objective of our research is to gain a comprehensive understanding of the new work organization processes in SMEs operating in a rapidly changing economic environment. Our research employed a single-sample cross-sectional sampling method, wherein respondents completed a questionnaire within a defined time frame. The primary data collection was carried out using a questionnaire containing closed questions. The research assesses the opinions of the respondents regarding the problem under study over a given period of time. The survey was conducted online. (3) Findings: 31% of the companies surveyed considered that introducing new work organization processes would make the company more adaptable to the changing economic environment. Only one-third considered involving employees in the processes the most important means to achieve this. Higher employee satisfaction is reported as a positive by 24% of companies. However, only a quarter of them believe the best way to achieve this is to involve employees in processes. For micro-enterprises, limited resources and smaller staff prioritize effective communication, and gaps can cause significant difficulties. Regarding the sample examined, among the hypotheses based on the literature background, we were only able to accept hypothesis H3 with modifications, which states that the biggest challenge for micro-companies in the industrial sector in a competitive market is understanding new technologies when improving employee skills. (4) Originality/Value: The research shows that micro-enterprises are particularly sensitive to the challenges associated with new technologies, which can be important information for designing training programs and developing support strategies for enterprises. Microplastic pollution is an escalating environmental and public health issue. Defined as plastic particles less than 5 mm in size, microplastics have been found in oceans, rivers, food, drinking water, air, and even human tissues. While scientific research on microplastics has expanded significantly, public understanding and behavioral change remain limited. This literature scan synthesizes global findings on public awareness, perceptions, and responses to microplastics, drawing from surveys, focus groups, and online behavioral data collected by existing studies. It explores the following: (1) general knowledge and perceived environmental and health risks; (2) trust in scientific and governmental sources; (3) willingness to adopt behavioral changes; (4) attitudes toward policy and corporate responsibility. Public concern is high, especially regarding marine life and food safety, but varies across populations based on education, socioeconomic status, and media exposure. Despite growing concern, psychological distance and persistent knowledge gaps hinder meaningful action. Communication strategies such as school programs, media campaigns, and eco-labels show mixed success, while regulatory interventions like plastic bags or microbead bans are more effective when supported by clear public messaging. This literature scan highlights the need for interdisciplinary collaboration to close the knowledge–behavior–policy gap and strengthen public engagement, particularly in urban settings where consumption and waste generation are concentrated. This study explores Hong Kong residents’ perceptions of their city’s smart city transformation, set against a backdrop of political and economic changes. It investigates residents’ awareness and support for Hong Kong’s development as a smart city and their familiarity with the Smart City Blueprint. Despite the global emphasis on smart city initiatives, there is a significant gap in understanding residents’ perceptions, with the existing literature often focusing on technological and policy aspects while neglecting citizen voices. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study integrates quantitative survey data (N = 808) with qualitative interviews (N = 25) and focus group discussions (4 groups, N = 43) to capture diverse perspectives. The findings reveal a generally low level of understanding of the Smart City Blueprint among residents, alongside a positive attitude towards its key dimensions like mobility, living, and the environment. Older citizens, those with lower educational attainment, and individuals from mainland China showed greater understanding and support. Interviews highlighted concerns about coordination, bureaucratic processes, data privacy, and public involvement. Focus group discussions revealed varied viewpoints, with some participants drawing comparisons to smart city developments in mainland China and expressing privacy concerns. The study underscores the importance of aligning smart city initiatives with residents’ needs and preferences through inclusive communication strategies and addressing concerns about data privacy and job displacement. Methodological triangulation enhances the validity and reliability of the research, revealing complex patterns and contradictions. Full article

(1) Background: This study investigates whether older adult individuals support childcare policies not only out of altruism, but also due to extended self-interest arising from intergenerational co-residence. It challenges the conventional view that welfare attitudes are shaped solely by one’s own life-cycle needs. (2) Methods: Using the 2013 and 2016 waves of the Korean Welfare Panel Study waves of the Korean Welfare Panel Study, a difference-in-differences (DiD) approach compares attitudes toward government childcare spending between older adults living with children (Co-residing Older Adults) and those who do not (Non-co-residing Older Adults), before and after universal childcare policies were introduced in 2013. (3) Results: The Co-residing Older Adults consistently expressed stronger support for family policies than their counterparts. However, this support did not significantly increase after the 2013 reform, indicating that extended self-interest may not be sensitive to short-term policy changes. (4) Conclusions: Extended self-interest appears to be a stable orientation shaped by family context rather than a flexible, policy-reactive stance. These findings highlight the role of intergenerational household ties in shaping welfare attitudes and offer implications for fostering generational solidarity in aging societies. Full article

This study is titled “Success Factors in Transport Interventions: A Mixed-Method Systematic Review (1990–2022)”. The purpose of the systematic review is to (1) identify effective interventions for transitioning individuals from private car reliance to sustainable transport, (2) summarise psychosocial theories shaping transportation choices and identify enablers and barriers influencing sustainable mode adoption, and (3) determine the success factors for interventions promoting sustainable transport choices. The last search was conducted on 18 November 2022. Five databases (Scopus, Web of Science, MEDLINE, APA PsycInfo, and ProQuest) were searched using customised Boolean search strings. The identified papers were included or excluded based on the following criteria: (a) reported a modal shift from car users or cars to less CO2-emitting modes of transport, (b) covered the adoption of low-carbon transport alternatives, (c) comprised interventions to promote sustainable transport, (d) assessed or measured the effectiveness of interventions, or (e) proposed behavioural models related to mode choice and/or psychosocial barriers or drivers for car/no-car use. The identified papers eligible for inclusion were critically appraised using Sirriyeh’s Quality Assessment Tool for Studies with Diverse Designs. Inter-rater reliability was assessed using Cohen’s Kappa to evaluate the risk of bias throughout the review process, and low-quality studies identified by the quality assessment were excluded to prevent sample bias. Qualitative data were extracted in a contextually relevant manner, preserving context and meaning to avoid the author’s bias of misinterpretation. Data were extracted using a form derived from the Joanna Briggs Institute. Data transformation and synthesis followed the recommendations of the Joanna Briggs Institution for mixed-method systematic reviews using a convergent integrated approach. Of the 7999 studies, 4 qualitative, 2 mixed-method, and 30 quantitative studies successfully passed all three screening cycles and were included in the review. Many of these studies focused on modelling individuals’ mode choice decisions from a psychological perspective. In contrast, case studies explored various transport interventions to enhance sustainability in densely populated areas. Nevertheless, the current systematic reviews do not show how individuals’ inner dispositions, such as acceptance, intention, or attitude, have evolved from before to after the implementation of schemes. Of the 11 integrated findings, 9 concerned enablers and barriers to an individual’s sustainable mode choice behaviour. In addition, two integrated findings emerged based on the effectiveness of the interventions. Although numerous interventions target public acceptance of sustainable transport, this systematic review reveals a critical knowledge gap regarding their longitudinal impact on individuals and effectiveness in influencing behavioural change. However, the study may be affected by language bias as it only included peer-reviewed articles published in English. Due to methodological heterogeneity across the studies, a meta-analysis was not feasible. Further high-quality research is needed to strengthen the evidence. The emergence of online brokerage platforms, mobile banking applications, and commission-free trading has altered the investment landscape, renewing commercial and scholarly interest in retail investors. In light of these changes, the present study aims to provide a structural overview of the current state of research on the behaviour of retail investors. Based on a dataset of 386 articles sourced from the Web of Science database, this study employs a composite bibliometric approach of a co-word and co-citation analysis as well as a network analysis to determine preceding scientific discourses, current research themes, and potential avenues for future research. The co-word analysis identifies seven distinct research themes: (1) implications for financial performance; (2) information behaviour; (3) behavioural biases and investor characteristics; (4) investor attention; (5) attitudes towards financial risks; (6) socially responsible investing; and (7) complex financial retail instruments. Incorporating applicable research on individual investors, private investors, and household investors from referenced articles, the co-citation analysis reveals nine preceding scientific discourses. Additionally, the network analyses highlight the concepts and publications currently shaping and likely to influence future research in this field. The present study contributes to the academic discourse by mapping the intellectual landscape of retail investor behaviour, suggesting avenues for future research, and offering valuable insights for navigating this dynamic field. The development of students’ skills, abilities, competences and knowledge is the basis for sustainable socio-economic development. Today we live in a world that is in continuous change, both economically and socially, which also determines a change in the requirements on the labor market and therefore graduates and higher education institutions must continuously adapt to these changes. Thus, higher education institutions must adapt their teaching strategies and educational offer, while students must develop new skills and competences. The main purpose of this article is to analyze the extent to which the information, skills, attitudes and competences acquired by graduates of physical education and sports faculties during their years of study influence their standard of living, job satisfaction and confidence. To achieve this objective, we asked the following research questions: 1. To what extent do the information, skills, abilities and competences acquired by students during their years of study influence their income level, standard of living, job satisfaction and level of confidence in the workplace? 2. What is the self-perception of students regarding the information, skills, abilities and knowledge that students possess? 3. What is the perception of employers regarding the information, skills, abilities and knowledge that students possess? 4. To what extent are there differences between students’ self-perception and employers’ perception regarding the information, skills, abilities and knowledge that students possess? Thus, data were collected through two questionnaires, one distributed among 333 graduates from physical education and sports faculties in Romania and one to 11 employers working in the sports industry in Romania. The data obtained from the students were analyzed using SPSS 24, and it was found that there is a small correlation between the information, skills, competences and knowledge acquired during the years of study and the standard of living, job satisfaction and the confidence in one’s own ability to successfully perform tasks at work. Among the skills, abilities and aptitudes that students consider themselves to excel in are a passion for sports, the continuous desire for improvement, conscientiousness, teamwork, openness to new things and respect for hierarchies and regulations. At the opposite end, graduates consider that they need to improve their public speaking skills, management skills, their ability to communicate in a foreign language, their ability to sell themselves and their ability to manage a project. Over the past few years, the higher education system has undergone radical transformations. The aim of this paper is to analyze a retrospective reflection on the experience of forced digitalization in the pandemic and post-pandemic periods. One of the promising methods of assessing changes and their impacts is to conduct longitudinal sociological research. The methodology of this study consists of several modules: 1. a literature review; 2. the formation of a summary; 3. a sociological survey in the pandemic period; 4. a sociological survey in the post-pandemic period; 5. an analysis of the transformation of attitudes toward distance education; and 6. a comparison of the results obtained with a summary table of the literature review. Engineering students in different courses participated in the survey. A total of 652 respondents took part in the first stage and 194 in the second stage. The interval between the stages was two years. According to the results of the study, the conclusions were made that the positive answers of the respondents are most influenced by their expectations; so, they are much less dependent on the year of study and local peculiarities of the university, which are also confirmed by the new characteristic patterns noted in the paper. At the same time, the shortcomings are to a greater extent based on specific local peculiarities. The paper offers a generalized methodological approach for further study of this topic. Full article
