Navigation is an essential ability for autonomous systems, and efficient motion planning for mobile robots is a central topic for autonomous vehicle design and service robotics. Most path-planning algorithms produce reference paths with sharp or discontinuous turns, inducing several drawbacks during mission execution, such as unexpected inertial stress and strain on the mechanical structure, passenger discomfort, and unsafe and unpredictable deviation of the real trajectory with respect to the reference planned one. Oppositely, smooth and feasible trajectories are often desired in real-time navigation for nonholonomic mobile robots where the surrounding environment can have a dynamic and complex shape with obstacles. In this paper, we propose a novel technique for the generation of smooth, collision-free, and near time-optimal paths for nonholonomic mobile robots. The proposed method exploits the features of a set of tunable bump functions, with the goal of pursuing smooth reference curves with tunable features (such as curvature, or jerk) yet seeking a reasonable length minimality, thus combining the advantages of the two most adopted techniques, namely Bezier interpolation and Dubins curves. After a thorough description of the analytical methods, the paper is primarily concerned with the design and tuning methods of the path-planning algorithm. Both a graphical method and numerical investigations and examples are performed to fully exploit the algorithm potentialities and to show the efficiency of the proposed strategy. Full article

To address unstable localization and sparse mapping for autonomous vehicles operating in GPS-denied and low-visibility environments, this paper proposes GTS-SLAM, a tightly coupled dense visual SLAM framework integrating Generalized Iterative Closest Point (GICP) and 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS). The system is designed for intelligent driving platforms such as underground mining vehicles, inspection robots, and tunnel autonomous navigation systems. The front-end performs covariance-aware point-cloud registration using GICP to achieve robust pose estimation under low texture, dust interference, and dynamic disturbances. The back-end employs probabilistic dense mapping based on 3DGS, combined with scale regularization, scale alignment, and keyframe factor-graph optimization, enabling synchronized optimization of localization and mapping. A Compact-3DGS compression strategy further reduces memory usage while maintaining real-time performance. Experiments on public datasets and real underground-like scenarios demonstrate centimeter-level trajectory accuracy, high-quality dense reconstruction, and real-time rendering. The system provides reliable perception capability for vehicle autonomous navigation, obstacle avoidance, and path planning in confined and weak-light environments. Overall, the proposed framework offers a deployable solution for autonomous driving and mobile robots requiring accurate localization and dense environmental understanding in challenging conditions. Bio-inspired quadrupedal robots exhibit superior adaptability and mobility in unstructured environments, making them suitable for complex task scenarios such as navigation, obstacle avoidance, and tracking in a variety of environments. Visual perception plays a critical role in enabling autonomous behavior, offering a cost-effective alternative to multi-sensor systems. This paper proposes an image segmentation-guided visual tracking framework to enhance both perception and motion control in quadruped robots. On the perception side, a cascaded convolutional neural network is introduced, integrating a global information guidance module to fuse low-level textures and high-level semantic features. This architecture effectively addresses limitations in single-scale feature extraction and improves segmentation accuracy under visually degraded conditions. On the control side, segmentation outputs are embedded into a biologically inspired central pattern generator (CPG), enabling coordinated generation of limb and spinal trajectories. This integration facilitates a closed-loop visual-motor system that adapts dynamically to environmental changes. Experimental evaluations on benchmark image segmentation datasets and robotic locomotion tasks demonstrate that the proposed framework achieves enhanced segmentation precision and motion flexibility, outperforming existing methods. The results highlight the effectiveness of vision-guided control strategies and their potential for deployment in real-time robotic navigation. Full article

Road maintenance remains one of the most resource-intensive and hazardous operations in infrastructure management. Traditional inspection practices rely heavily on manual labour and discrete procedures, often resulting in limited scalability, operator exposure to traffic hazards, and inefficiencies in data collection. This paper presents a novel automated methodology that integrates Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) to enable automated inspection and measurement of road assets through a digital twin (DT) system. The system leverages data fusion and real-time synchronisation between field agents and a centralised digital twin to monitor the retro-reflectivity of vertical and horizontal signage, detect obstacles and vegetation, and support data-driven maintenance planning. A case study conducted on the Italian highway network demonstrated improvements in operational safety, inspection efficiency, and measurement consistency. The results confirm that the integration of UAVs and AMRs within a digital twin framework can significantly improve sustainability, productivity, and workers’ safety in road maintenance operations. The integration of emerging technologies such as robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to transform agricultural harvesting by improving efficiency, reducing waste, lowering labor dependency, and enhancing produce quality. This paper presents the development of an intelligent robotic berry harvesting system that combines deep learning–based perception with autonomous robotic manipulation for real-time strawberry harvesting. A computer vision pipeline based on the YOLOv11 segmentation model was developed and integrated into a Smart Mobile Manipulator (SMM) equipped with autonomous navigation, a 6-degree-of-freedom (6-DoF) xArm 6 robotic arm, and ROS middleware to enable real-time operation. Using a publicly available strawberry dataset comprising 2,800 images collected under ridge-planted cultivation conditions, the proposed YOLOv11-small segmentation model achieved 84.41% mAP@0.5, outperforming YOLOv11 object detection, Faster R-CNN, and RT-DETR in segmentation quality while maintaining real-time performance at 10 FPS on an NVIDIA Jetson Orin Nano edge GPU. A PCA-based fruit orientation and geometric analysis method achieved 86.5% localization accuracy on 200 test images. Controlled indoor harvesting experiments using synthetic strawberries demonstrated an overall harvesting success rate of 72% across 50 trials. The proposed system provides a general-purpose platform for berry harvesting in controlled environments, offering a scalable and efficient solution for autonomous harvesting. Full article

Autonomous mobile robots operating in outdoor environments must have an understanding of the surrounding terrain geometry to ensure efficient and safe navigation. This article presents a DEM-based intelligent traversability mapping framework to transform open-source geospatial data into slope-aware cost maps for multirobot autonomous navigation within the ROS2 framework. The proposed cv_gdal algorithm automatically processes GeoTIFF elevation data using adaptive slope thresholding based on each robot’s physical capabilities, generating ROS-compatible cell occupancy maps. Six regions of Spain were used to evaluate terrain representation accuracy and navigation performance in kilometer-scale DEMS. This framework enables autonomous perception-to-planning pipelines and supports the deployment of multirobot systems for search and rescue (SAR) tasks. By bridging geospatial analytics with robotic perception and adaptive decision-making, this work contributes to the development of intelligent, self-configuring robotic systems capable of operating safely in complex outdoor environments. To enhance the navigation efficiency and obstacle avoidance capability of omnidirectional mobile robots in unstructured and complex environments, this paper conducts research on intelligent path planning and management for X-type Mecanum-wheeled mobile robots with the improved Proximal Policy Optimization–Gated Recurrent Unit (PPO-GRU) model on the basis of robot kinematics modeling and deep reinforcement learning. First, by performing kinematic modeling of the X-type Mecanum-wheeled chassis and designing a high-dimensional state space along with a multi-factor composite reward function, the agent training environment for the robot–environment interaction control is established, laying the environmental foundation for in-depth research on path planning. Second, based on the construction of a Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) path planning model, the PPO model is integrated with Gated Recurrent Units (GRUs) to form an improved PPO-GRU path planning model, thereby achieving an end-to-end path planning strategy. Finally, using a self-developed kinematic simulation platform for the X-type Mecanum-wheeled robot, the rationality and robustness of the proposed path planning model are investigated through ablation experiments, comparative experiments, dynamic environment tests, and tests considering key real-world phenomena. The research results indicate that the improved PPO-GRU path planning model increases the path planning success rate to 96%, reduces the average number of collisions by 82.7%, and achieves an average linear velocity reaching 84.5% of the maximum speed set in the environment. While attaining high-precision and robust planning management for autonomous navigation paths, it significantly improves the response speed of the agent’s autonomous navigation path planning. To address the challenges of steel surface defect detection—characterized by fine-grained textures, substantial scale variations, and complex background interference—conventional lightweight detectors often struggle to balance real-time navigation requirements with high-precision spatial localization on mobile inspection platforms. In this work, we propose KDM-YOLO, a lightweight visual localization and detection method built upon YOLOv10n, designed to provide an efficient perception engine for autonomous inspection robots. The proposed approach enhances the baseline through three key perspectives: feature extraction, context modeling, and multi-scale fusion. Specifically, KWConv is introduced to strengthen the representation of fine-grained texture and edge cues; C2f-DRB is employed to enlarge the effective receptive field and improve long-range dependency perception to reduce missed detections; and a multi-scale attention fusion (MSAF) module is inserted before the detection head to adaptively integrate spatial details with semantic context while suppressing redundant background responses. Ablation studies confirm that each module contributes to performance gains, and their combination yields the best overall results. Comparative experiments further demonstrate that KDM-YOLO significantly improves detection performance while retaining a compact model size and high inference speed. Compared with the YOLOv10n baseline, Precision, Recall and mAP@50 are increased to 91.0%, 93.9%, and 95.4%, respectively, with a parameter count of 3.29 M and an inference speed of 155.6 f/s. These results indicate that KDM-YOLO achieves an ideal balance between the accuracy and computational efficiency required for embedded navigation platforms, providing an effective solution for online autonomous inspection and real-time localization of steel surface defects. Intralogistic activities play a critical role in sustaining uninterrupted manufacturing in production systems. With the increased usage of autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) to feed the production systems; a complex problem structure has emerged that includes the simultaneous evaluation of the sizing of the robotic fleet, task assignment and scheduling, as well as feasibility analysis of the investment. In this study, a complete decision-support frame is proposed to decide the minimum number of robots, plan the time index robot-line assignments and calculate the Cost Ratio for multiline manufacturing systems without starvation. In the proposed method, the total robot travel time, plant layout, operation times and safety factors are given as inputs to the time-indexed mixed-integer linear programming (MILP). In the literature, the fleet sizing and the scheduling problems are mostly handled separately. These highly related problems are integrated into one frame in this study. The method is validated by utilizing two worst case scenarios for an uninterrupted operation with changeable batteries and mandatory charging break. The results demonstrate that charging strategies have a huge impact on the number of minimum robots, operational applicability and economic performance. Full article

Unmanned spherical robots are autonomous mobile platforms with a fully enclosed spherical shell, providing high stability and strong adaptability to complex terrains. However, existing pendulum or flywheel spherical robots often suffer from limited maneuverability, whereas complex hybrid actuation schemes tend to compromise system stability. To address these issues, this study proposes an improved pendulum-driven spherical robot with a mechanically decoupled actuation design, integrating a pendulum system and a circular gear rack turning mechanism. This design enables smooth linear rolling as well as rapid in-place rotation, significantly enhancing maneuverability and motion flexibility on complex terrains. A dynamic model of the spherical robot is established to describe the decoupled actuation mechanism, and a fuzzy proportional–derivative (PD) control strategy is designed for rolling and steering control. Simulation and prototype experiments were conducted to evaluate trajectory tracking, steering response, and terrain adaptability. The results demonstrate that the proposed spherical robot achieves path following and in-place turning with robust mobility. Full article

Laser SLAM is a key enabling technology for autonomous navigation of intelligent mobile robots. The standard FLOAM algorithm experiences low positioning accuracy, weak anti-interference performance, and prone error accumulation in pure LiDAR scenarios, making it difficult to meet practical engineering requirements. The focus of numerous studies is thus on improved pure laser SLAM algorithms that are highly robust. The enhanced algorithm of FLOAM GICP registration and SOR filtering is applied in this study. The SOR filtering processes the laser point cloud to remove outlier noise. The GICP registration replaces the classic with an optimized matching cost function. Experiments are conducted on a mobile robot with a Leishen C16 LiDAR to simulate real-life tests in an indoor corridor and outdoor plaza on the Gazebo simulation platform. The results from the EVO tool’s quantitative evaluation indicate that the indoor mean absolute error and RMSE were reduced by 46.67% and 41.67% compared with FLOAM. The outdoor mean and maximum errors are reduced by 46.00% and 70.00%, respectively. The proposed improved scheme achieves centimeter-level positioning accuracy and strong robustness in pure laser configurations without auxiliary sensors such as IMUs or odometers, providing a reliable technical solution for the engineering application of mobile robots in sensor-constrained scenarios. The A* algorithm is widely used in path planning for Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), but the path it generates is prone to collision with random obstacles. To address this issue, this paper proposes a hybrid path planning algorithm integrating the improved A* algorithm with Dynamic Window Approach (DWA). Firstly, a global key point extraction strategy is adopted, and Bresenham’s line algorithm is used to eliminate redundant path points and turning inflection points, optimizing the conciseness and continuity of the path while redefining the child nodes of the current position. Secondly, in complex environments, the inflection points of the global path are taken as the target points of DWA to segment the path, and local dynamic planning is combined to achieve real-time obstacle avoidance. Simulation results show that compared with the traditional A* algorithm, the improved algorithm reduces the planning time by 24.19%, decreases the number of inflection points by 40.00%, and shortens the path length by 1.49%. In environments with random obstacles, the path generated by the hybrid algorithm is smoother, which can effectively enhance the local obstacle avoidance capability and improve the safety of path planning. Furthermore, physical experiments on an AGV platform with a distributed master-slave control architecture (STM32 microcontroller and Jetson embedded processor) verify the algorithm’s hardware compatibility and real-time computing performance, validating its engineering applicability in practical industrial scenarios. Autonomous mobile robots are transforming industries from e-commerce logistics to field exploration, but their effectiveness depends on onboard energy storage. This study addresses the challenge of selecting optimal battery technologies for autonomous mobile robots, balancing performance, energy efficiency, thermal stability, and cost across diverse applications. We focus on lithium-ion, lithium-polymer, and nickel-metal hydride batteries, the most common power solutions, each with distinct advantages and disadvantages in energy density, form factor, thermal stability, and cost. A dynamic modeling and simulation framework in MapleSim evaluated these chemistries under defined and representative operating conditions, tracking state of charge and temperature during charging and discharging. A Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm evaluated 37 battery configurations by thermal stability, energy efficiency, and cost across five use cases. Key results indicate that for logistics and warehousing, lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide with graphite is optimal; for healthcare, lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide with lithium titanate oxide excels; for manufacturing, lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide with graphite leads; for agricultural robots, lithium manganese oxide with graphite is best; and for exploration and mining, lithium iron phosphate with graphite is most reliable. These results provide a structured basis for battery selection, showing how simulation-driven, multi-criteria decision-making enhances energy management and operational reliability. Full article

Energy consumption optimisation has emerged as a critical need in Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs). Conventional A* implementations typically minimise path distance, neglecting energy-relevant factors such as directional changes and trajectory smoothness that significantly impact battery life and operational costs. This work proposes two energy-aware A* variants trained on empirical data from the KUKA KMP 1500 platform, where energy consumption is measured as battery SoC depletion: A*-RF, which integrates a Random Forest (RF) model directly into the cost function, and A*-MOD, which approximates the energy model through RF feature importance weights, achieving linear computational complexity O(nf). The RF model predicted energy consumption with an RMSE below 1.5% relative error, identifying travel distance and rotation angle as the dominant energy factors. Experimental validation across 42 path planning scenarios on a real industrial factory floor demonstrates that A*-MOD reduces energy consumption by up to 58.91% and improves operational autonomy by 2.21 times, with statistically significant improvements (p < 0.01) across all evaluated metrics. Mobile robot path planning using Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) has the disadvantages of slow convergence, local optima, and unsmooth paths because of fixed heuristics and constant pheromone updating. In this paper, Self-Adaptive Risk-Aware Bidirectional updating ACO (SAR-BACO) is proposed with three improvements: (1) composite heuristic incorporating target attraction, obstacle repulsion and direction consistency to minimize early blind searching; (2) dynamic pheromone updating based on solution quality and number of iterations to balance exploration and exploitation; (3) triangular pruning to remove redundant turning points and become smoother. Theoretical analysis verifies convergence. Our experimental results on grids up to 50 × 50 demonstrate that SAR-BACO performs much better than classical and heuristic-improved algorithms with respect to the length of a path, convergence rate, smoothness and efficiency. Using SAR-BACO on a 50 × 50 map, the path lengths, convergence iterations and turning points decreased by 60.68%, 48.96%, and 96.00% respectively compared to Basic ACO (after triangular pruning, values averaged over 50 runs). The framework provides a generalizable solution to autonomous navigation with the need to consider both search efficiency and path executability. Full article
