Modifying lubricants with hard material particles improves lubricant performance by allowing the particles to penetrate the contact area and separate the contacting surfaces. The use of solid particles as additives in fluid lubricants presents a promising avenue for providing effective lubrication under high loads in sheet metal forming. This article presents the results of friction tests using the bending under tension friction tribotester. Low-carbon DC01 steel sheets were used as the test material. The main goal of the study was to determine the effect of lubricant modification by adding MoS2 and SiO2 particles and the modification of 145Cr6 steel countersamples on the coefficient of friction (CoF), changes in friction-induced surface roughness and friction mechanisms. The surfaces of the countersamples were modified using electron beam melting and the ion implantation of lead (IPb). It was found that increasing the SiO2 and MoS2 content in DC01/145Cr6 and DC01/IPb contacts under base oil lubrication conditions resulted in a decrease in the CoF value. For the countersample subjected to electron beam melting, considering all friction conditions, the CoF decreased between 31.9% and 37.5%. Full article

The building sector is under increasing pressure to lower its environmental impact, prompting renewed interest in raw soil as a low-carbon and locally available material. This study investigates the mechanical and thermal properties of clay-based masonry walls through a comprehensive experimental program on earthen mortars, bricks, and their interfaces, considering both stabilized and non-stabilized formulations. Compressive, bending, and shear tests reveal that strength is strongly influenced by mortar composition, hydration time, and the soil-to-sand ratio. The addition of 5–7.5% cement yields modest gains in compressive strength but increases the carbon footprint, whereas extended pre-hydration achieves similar improvements with lower environmental costs. Thermal characterization of the studied samples (SiO2 ≈ 61.2 wt%, Al2O3 ≈ 11.7 wt%, MgO ≈ 5.1 wt%) revealed that SiO2-enriched compositions significantly enhance thermal conductivity, whereas the presence of Al2O3 and MgO contributes to increased heat capacity and improved moisture regulation. These findings suggest that well-optimized clay-based mortars can satisfy the structural and thermal requirements of non-load-bearing applications, offering a practical and sustainable alternative to conventional construction materials. By reducing embodied carbon, enhancing hygrothermal comfort, and relying on locally available resources, such mortars contribute to the advancement of green building practices and the transition towards low-carbon construction. Spread-tow woven fabrics (STWs) have attracted considerable attention owing to their thin-layered characteristics, high fiber strength utilization rate and superior designability, finding wide application in the aerospace field. To meet the application requirements for materials with high specific strength/specific modulus in the aerospace field, this study designed an anti-sandwich structured composite with high specific load-bearing capacity. Herein, the core layer was a load-bearing structure composed of STW, while the surface layers were hybrid lightweight structures made of STW and nonwoven (NW) felt. Repeated impact test results showed that increasing the thickness ratio of the core layer enhanced the impact resistant stiffness of the overall structure, whereas increasing the proportion of NW felt in the surface layers improved the energy absorption of the composites but reduced their load-bearing stiffness and strength. The composite exhibited superior repeated impact resistance, achieving a peak impact load of 17.43 kN when the thickness ratio of the core layer to the surface layers was 2:1 and the hybrid ratio of the surface layers was 3:1. No penetration occurred after 20 repeated impacts at the 50 J or 3 repeated impacts at 100 J. Meanwhile, both the maximum displacement and impact duration increased, whereas the bending stiffness declined as the number of impacts increased. The failure mode was mainly characterized by progressive interfacial cracking in the surface layers and fracture in the core layer. Full article

This study investigates the mechanical behaviour of timber–concrete composite (TCC) floor members with an innovative adhesive connection reinforced by granite chips, glass fibre yarn net in the epoxy adhesive layer, and polypropylene (PP) fibres in the concrete layer. Laboratory tests involved three groups of specimens subjected to three-point bending over a span of 500 mm with specimen lengths of 550 mm. Group A specimens exhibited crack initiation at approximately 8 kN and partial disintegration at an average load of 11.17 kN, with maximum vertical displacements ranging from 1.7 to 2.5 mm at 8 kN load, increasing rapidly to 4.3 to 5 mm post-cracking. The addition of reinforcing fibres decreased the brittleness of the adhesive connection and improved load-bearing capacity. Finite element modeling using the newly developed Verisim4D software (2025 v 0.6) and analytical micromechanics approaches demonstrated satisfactory accuracy in predicting the composite behavior. This research highlights the potential of reinforcing the adhesive layer and concrete with fibres to enhance the ductility and durability of TCC members under flexural loading. Full article

This study investigates the transverse loads acting on high-speed train bogie frames under actual service conditions. To enable direct identification, the locating arms were instrumented as bending sensors and calibrated under realistic lateral-stop constraints, ensuring robustness of the measurement channels. Field tests were conducted on a CR400BF high-speed EMU over a 226 km route at six speed levels (260–390 km/h), with gyroscope and GPS signals employed to recognize typical operating conditions, including straights, curves, and switches (straight movement and diverging movements). The results show that the proposed recognition method achieves high accuracy, enabling rapid and effective identification and localization of typical operating conditions. Under switch conditions, the bogie frame transverse loads are characterized by low-frequency, large-amplitude fluctuations, with overall RMS levels being higher in diverging switches and straight-through depot switches. Curve parameters and speed levels exert significant influence on the amplitude of the transverse-load trend component. On curves with identical parameters, the trend-component amplitude exhibits a quadratic nonlinear relationship with train speed, decreasing first and then increasing in the opposite direction as speed rises. In mainline curves and straight sections, the RMS values of transverse loads on Axles 1 and 2 scale proportionally with speed level, with the leading axle in the direction of travel consistently producing higher transverse loads than the trailing axle. When load samples are balanced across both running directions, the transverse load spectra of Axles 1 and 2 at the same speed level show negligible differences, while the spectrum shape index increases proportionally with speed level. Pile-anchor foundations, serving as one of the anchoring solutions to ensure the safety and stability of floating offshore wind turbines, are primarily subjected to inclined loading induced by anchor chain forces, resulting in significantly different bearing behavior compared to conventional vertically loaded pile foundations. However, experimental research on the inclined pullout performance of anchor piles remains insufficient. To address this gap, this study employs a self-developed servo-controlled loading system to investigate the pullout bearing characteristics of anchor piles in dry and saturated sand, considering factors such as pullout angle and loading point depth. The research results show that from the load–displacement curve of the model pile, it can be found that with the increase in displacement, the load it bears first gradually increases to the peak, then decreases, and then gradually stabilizes. The loading angle has a significant impact on the bearing performance of pile-anchor foundations. As the loading angle increases, the failure mode shows pullout failure. When the loading angle increases from 30° to 60°, the bearing performance of the pile foundation decreases by approximately 63%. When the depth of the loading point increases from 0.22 times the pile length to 0.78 times the pile length, the diagonal anchor tensile bearing capacity of the model pile increases by approximately 45%. When the depth of the loading point is the same, the distribution patterns of bending moment and shear force are basically similar. However, the smaller the loading angle, the larger the value. This is because the horizontal load component plays a dominant role. The compression of the piles above and below the loading point, as well as the bending moment, shear force and axial force under saturated sand conditions, are similar to those in dry sand, but their values are reduced by about 50%. It can be seen that the soil conditions have an influence on the bearing characteristics of pile foundations. Full article

This study investigates the bidirectional bending performance of double- and triple-spliced steel-ribbed composite slabs for substation applications. Full-scale experiments and numerical parametric analyses were conducted to evaluate ultimate load, ductility, stiffness, failure modes, and load-transfer mechanisms. Results indicate that double-spliced slabs exhibit better performance than triple-spliced slabs, showing a 24.5% higher ultimate load and 65.3% greater ductility, with well-developed orthogonal cracks and yielding of both longitudinal prestressing steel and transverse reinforcement. Triple-spliced slabs display partial bidirectional behavior due to reduced transverse integrity, with stresses in edge slabs concentrated at the corners. Compared with monolithic slabs, spliced slabs show nearly identical stiffness at cracking onset but progressively reduced stiffness, load capacity, and ductility in the mid-to-late loading stages. Joint-crossing reinforcement is critical for transverse load transfer, and increasing its diameter is more effective than increasing its strength in preventing premature joint-controlled failure. These findings provide significant theoretical guidance and technical support for the prefabricated construction of high-voltage substation floor systems. Full article

Background: Multilevel posterior spinal fusion to T10 often encounters complications such as screw loosening and proximal junctional kyphosis. Cement augmentation or prophylactic vertebroplasty is used to prevent these, but their biomechanical effects remain unclear. Methods: A validated finite element model (T8–pelvis) from CT data of a 57-year-old male was tested in five configurations: fusion only, fusion with cement augmentation at T10, T10–T11, T10–T11 plus T9 vertebroplasty, and T10–T11 plus T8–T9 vertebroplasty. Range of motion (ROM), intradiscal pressure (IDP), posterior ligament/facet stress, and cement–bone interface stresses were analyzed under a 400 N follower load and 10 N·m moments. Results: Cement augmentation at the upper instrumented vertebra produced <5% changes in ROM, IDP, and posterior ligament/facet stresses compared with fusion only, indicating preserved stability. Prophylactic vertebroplasty redistributed stress proximally, with elevated cement–bone interface stresses localized at T9 when vertebroplasty was performed at a single adjacent level (T9) and distributed to both T8 and T9 when performed at two adjacent levels (T8–9)—with T9 stressed mainly during lateral bending and extension, and T8 during flexion and lateral bending. Conclusion: Cement augmentation alone did not compromise adjacent-level biomechanics, but prophylactic vertebroplasty created abnormal stress concentrations at adjacent interfaces, potentially increasing fracture risk. These findings highlight the need for careful patient selection and further studies in osteoporotic populations. Full article

Timber structures and structural members have undergone rapid development in recent decades and are now fully competitive with traditional structures made of reinforced concrete or structural steel in many areas. Low self-weight, high durability, rapid construction assembly, and a favourable environmental footprint predispose timber structures for wider future use. A persisting drawback is the often-complicated joining of individual elements, especially when moment resistance is required. For CLT panels, this issue is more urgent due to their relatively small thickness and cross-laminated lay-up. This paper presents experimental research investigating parameters related to the actual behaviour of a moment-resisting embedded joint of CLT panels. The test programme consisted of four series (12 specimens) loaded in four-point bending to failure. The proposed and tested joint consists of high-strength steel rods glued into the two connected parts of the CLT panel. In addition to a detailed investigation of the resistance and stiffness of the joint, this research evaluates the effect of composite action with a reinforced-concrete slab on the performance of this type of joint. The experimental results and their detailed analysis are also extended to propose a framework concept for creating a theoretical (mechanical) model based on the component method. Full article

This study examines the influence of steel fiber reinforcement on the mechanical properties of geopolymer concrete incorporating different slag to fly ash binder ratios (75:25, 50:50, and 25:75). Three fiber contents (0%, 1%, and 2%) by volume were used to assess their impact on compressive strength, flexural strength, initial stiffness, and toughness. Compressive tests were conducted at 1, 7, and 28 days, while flexural behavior was evaluated through a four-point bending test at 28 days. The results showed that geopolymer concrete with 75% slag and 25% fly ash experienced the highest compressive strength and modulus of elasticity, regardless of the steel fiber content. The addition of 1% and 2% steel fiber content enhanced the compressive strength by 17.49% and 28.8%, respectively, compared to the control sample. The binder composition of geopolymer concrete plays a crucial role in determining its compressive strength. Reducing the slag content from 75% to 50% and then to 25% resulted in a 15.1% and 33% decrease in compressive strength, respectively. The load–displacement curves of the 2% fiber-reinforced beams display strain-hardening behavior. On the other hand, after the initial crack, a constant increase in load causes the specimen to experience progressive strain until it reaches its maximum load capacity. When the peak load is attained, the curve gradually drops due to a loss in load-carrying capacity known as post-peak softening. This behavior is attributed to steel’s ductility and is evident in specimens 75S25FA2 and 50S50FA2. Concrete with 75% slag and 25% fly ash demonstrated the highest peak load but the lowest ultimate displacement, indicating high strength but brittle behavior. In contrast, concrete with 75% fly ash and 25% slag showed the lowest peak load but the highest displacement. Across all binder ratios, the addition of steel fibers enhanced the flexural strength, initial stiffness, and toughness. This is attributed to the bridging action of steel fibers in concrete. Additionally, steel fiber-reinforced beams exhibited a ductile failure mode, characterized by multiple fine cracks throughout the midspan, whereas the control beams displayed a single vertical crack in the midspan, indicating a brittle failure mode. Calculating the second-order effect and reinforcement of reinforced concrete box section columns has geometric nonlinearity and material nonlinearity. It requires integration and iterative solutions and is inconvenient in practical applications; moreover, China’s “Code for Design of Concrete Structures” (GB 50010-2010) uses the same formula as that for rectangular sections when calculating geometric nonlinearity. To find out a calculation method by hand that is specific to box-shaped sections and does not require iterative procedures, the theoretical derivation is adopted and divided into two gradations: (1) in terms of cross-section: using strain as the known variable to solve the internal force, thus solving the calculation problem of the bearing capacity of the cross-section; (2) in terms of members, the model column method can be used to solve the calculation problem of second-order effects of members. Finally, nomograms that can calculate the second-order effect and reinforcement of columns without iterative calculation are drawn, which contain five parameters, namely first-order bending moment, axial force, curvature, slenderness ratio, and the mechanical ratio of reinforcement. One of the nomograms corresponds to the cross-section resistance, and the other corresponds to the balance of internal resistance and external effect. Compared with the GB 50010-2010, the differences in the total bending moment and reinforcement ratio are within 10% and 20%, respectively. Based on the steel sheet pile cofferdam project for the main bridge piers of a cross-sea bridge, finite element numerical simulations were conducted to analyze the influence of construction sequences in marine environments, as well as the effects of initial water levels and support positions under various construction conditions on the stress and deformation behavior of steel sheet piles. Using a staged construction simulation with a Mohr–Coulomb soil model and stepwise activation of loads/excavation, this study delivers practically relevant trends: staged dewatering halves the sheet pile head displacement (top lateral movement <0.08 m vs. ~0.16 m in the original scheme) and mobilizes the support system earlier, while slightly increasing peak bending demand (~1800 kN·m) at the bracing elevation; the interaction between water head and brace elevation is explored through fitted response curves and summarized in figures/tables, and soil/structural properties are tabulated for reproducibility. The results indicate that a well-designed dewatering process, along with the coordination between water levels and internal support positions, plays a critical role in controlling deformation. The findings offer valuable references for the design and construction of sheet pile cofferdams in marine engineering under varying construction methods and water level conditions. Full article

As a critical factor in ice load calculation for marine structures in cold regions, the growth mechanism and mechanical properties of rafted ice urgently require clarification. This study systematically investigated the growth patterns and flexural strength characteristics of rafted ice through laboratory-prepared specimens. Experimental results indicate that the thickness of rafted ice exhibits a negative correlation with both ambient temperature and initial ice thickness during growth. Due to the higher porosity of its frozen layer, the density of rafted ice decreases by approximately 8% on average compared to single-layer ice. Three-point bending tests demonstrate that, under the combined effect of high tensile strength in the lower ice layer and energy absorption by the porosity of the frozen layer, the flexural strength of rafted ice ranges from 1.12 to 1.34 times that of single-layer ice. This study presents a stochastic approach to assess bending moment demand in reinforced concrete beams subjected to vertical loads, incorporating uncertainties in material properties, geometry, and loading conditions. A Monte Carlo simulation framework was developed in Python version 3.9.3 using the OpenSeesPy library to analyze the variability of internal forces based on probabilistic input parameters. The analysis focuses on a four-span continuous beam representative of typical structural configurations in buildings. Probability distributions were assigned to key structural design parameters such as the unit weight of concrete (ρ), beam dimensions (b, h), column dimension (a), and applied loads, based on standard statistical assumptions and design guidelines. A total of 10,000 simulations were performed to obtain statistical descriptors of bending moment demand across the different spans. The results reveal significant variability in moment magnitudes, underscoring the importance of accounting for uncertainty in structural design. The proposed methodology enables the estimation of demand distributions and the identification of critical spans with higher sensitivity to parameter variations. Although the study does not evaluate structural capacity or failure probability, it contributes to the integration of stochastic techniques in the preliminary stages of design. Future work may include the incorporation of reliability 16 indices and comparisons with design code values. Full article

Effect of Fiber Characteristics on Cracking Resistance Properties of Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) Mixture

Cracking is a critical distress that reduces an asphalt pavement’s service life, and fiber reinforcement is an effective strategy to enhance anti-cracking capacity. However, the effects of fiber type, morphology, and length on key cracking modes remain insufficiently understood, limiting rational fiber selection in practice. This study systematically evaluated the influence of four representative fiber types on the anti-cracking performance of Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) mixture, combining mechanical testing and microstructural analysis. The fibers included lignin fiber (LF); polyester fiber (PF); chopped basalt fiber (CBF) with lengths of 3 mm, 6 mm, 9 mm; and flocculent basalt fiber (FBF). Key mechanical tests assessed specific cracking behaviors: three-point bending (low-temperature cracking), indirect tensile (tensile cracking), pre-cracked semi-circular bending (crack propagation), overlay (reflective cracking), and four-point bending (fatigue resistance) tests. A scanning electron microscopy (SEM) test characterized fiber morphology and fiber–asphalt interface interactions, revealing microstructural mechanisms underlying performance improvements. The results showed that all fibers improved anti-cracking performance, but their efficacy varied with fiber type, appearance, and length. PF exhibited the best low-temperature cracking resistance, with a 26.8% increase in bending strength and a 16.6% increase in maximum bending strain. For tensile and crack propagation resistance, 6 mm CBF and FBF outperformed the other fibers, with fracture energy increases of up to 53.2% (6 mm CBF) and CTindex improvements of 72.8% (FBF). FBF optimized reflective cracking resistance, increasing the loading cycles by 48.0%, while 6 mm CBF achieved the most significant fatigue life improvement (36.9%) by balancing rigidity and deformation. Additionally, SEM analysis confirmed that effective fiber dispersion and strong fiber–asphalt bonding were critical for enhancing stress transfer and inhibiting crack initiation/propagation. These findings provide quantitative insights into the relationship between fiber characteristics (type, morphology, length) and anti-cracking performance, offering practical guidance for rational fiber selection to improve pavement durability.
