Background/Objectives: Diabetic neuropathy (DN) is one of the most common and disabling complications of diabetes mellitus (DM), affecting motor, sensory, and autonomic nerves. Genetic factors, particularly polymorphisms in the Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) gene, have been proposed as contributors to DN susceptibility. This study aimed to synthesize the scientific evidence on ACE gene polymorphisms and their association with DN through a scoping review combined with scientometric analysis. Methods: A comprehensive search of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science was performed in February 2025, following JBI and PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Observational studies involving individuals with DN and the genotyping of ACE polymorphisms were included. Scientometric mapping was conducted using the Bibliometrix package in RStudio to identify publication trends and key thematic terms. Results: From 100 screened articles, 11 met the inclusion criteria. Most studies (72.7%) addressed diabetic peripheral neuropathy, while 27.3% investigated cardiac autonomic neuropathy. All studies analyzed the I/D polymorphism in intron 16 of the ACE gene. The D allele and DD genotype were associated with increased susceptibility to DN in over half of the studies (6/11), while the II genotype was reported as protective in 3/11. Findings varied by ethnicity and study design. The scientometric analysis identified ‘peripheral diabetic neuropathy’, type 2 diabetes’, and ‘ACE gene polymorphism’ as the most frequently co-occurring terms, indicating that research on this topic has been concentrated around these themes, while showing limited diversity in geographic origin and scope. Conclusions: ACE I/D polymorphism appears to modulate susceptibility to DN, though interethnic variability and methodological heterogeneity challenge definitive conclusions. Broader, standardized studies are needed to validate its utility as a predictive biomarker. Full article

Plant-based diets are increasingly attracting attention as they play a significant role in human health and environmental sustainability and are believed to be key components of sustainable food systems. In the present study, both pros and cons of the adoption of plant-based diets are analyzed using a bibliometric method integrated with a qualitative examination of the scientific literature. For the bibliometric study, Bibliometrix software was utilized, examining 3245 scientific articles, downloaded from the Scopus database, and printed between the years 1957 and 2025. The analyses were conducted using R software, version 4.4.1, with access to the Bibliometrix package, version 4.1. The results indicate a remarkable rise, in the last two decades, in the scholarly focus on the influence of plant-based diets on the individual’s health condition as well as the environment. Keyword co-occurrence studies and international collaborations demonstrate a dominance of research focus in both the United States and Europe, with significant contributions from the Asia–Pacific region. Furthermore, the current work offers qualitative identification of the benefits of plant diets from various perspectives like nutritional, economic, ecological, and cultural. It also explores the main dissuaders from adhering to these diets, including perceived nutritional hazards, cost perceptions, low availability, and social prohibitions. Findings emphasize that, in spite of all the barriers, plant food-based diets have a wide-ranging ability to provide tangible benefits at both the individual and population levels, and documented in the scientific literature are recommendations of expert-led education programs, economic incentives, and judiciously framed public policies to overcome these barriers and to make this transition possible towards sustainable food choices. Findings provide a comprehensive understanding of the current lines of inquiry and stage the subsequent work on how to motivate sustainability among the general population. Full article

Background/Objectives: Despite advances in diagnosis and treatment, colorectal cancer (CRC) remains one of the most prevalent and challenging malignancies worldwide. The dysregulation of microRNAs (miRNAs) has emerged as a critical factor in CRC onset, progression, and therapeutic resistance. This study aims to provide an overview of global research trends on miRNAs in CRC, (i) identifying the most studied miRNAs, (ii) exploring under-investigated areas, and (iii) highlighting emerging themes and potential future directions. Methods: To assess the evolution of the global miRNA–CRC research trends, we conducted a bibliometric analysis of 828 CRC–miRNA-focused articles published between 2008 and 2024, sourced from the Scopus database. Bibliometric mapping was performed using the R/Bibliometrix package and by leveraging a customized Python-based pipeline, which is useful for extracting and validating miRNA identifiers (miRNA IDs) based on the miRBase database. This miRNA ID-related approach enabled us to systematically identify the most frequently studied miRNAs over time while highlighting underexplored miRNA. Results: The analysis revealed a substantial and accelerating publication growth rate, delineating three major phases in CRC–miRNA research. China emerged as the leading contributor in terms of the publication volume. miR-21, miR-34a, and miR-195-5p were among the most frequently studied miRNAs, underscoring their relevance to CRC biology and therapy. Keyword and citation analyses identified key thematic areas, such as cell proliferation, epithelial–mesenchymal transition, and chemoresistance, especially to oxaliplatin and 5-fluorouracil. Emerging research frontiers included ferroptosis, ceRNA networks, and exosome-mediated miRNA transport. An analysis of the collaborations indicated strong intra-national collaborations, with room for expanding international research networks. Conclusions: This study provides an in-depth bibliometric landscape of the CRC-related miRNA research by highlighting influential studies and journals while identifying gaps and underexplored topics. These insights offer valuable guidance for future translational and clinical research on this topic. Full article

The balance between exploration and exploitation is a fundamental element in the design and performance of bio-inspired optimization algorithms. However, to date, its conceptual evolution and its treatment in the scientific literature have not been systematically characterized from a bibliometric approach. This study performs an exhaustive analysis of the scientific production on the balance between exploration and exploitation using records extracted from the Web of Science (WoS) database. The processing and analysis of the data were carried out through the combined use of Bibliometrix (R package) and VOSviewer, tools that made it possible to quantify productivity, map collaborative networks, and visualize emerging thematic trends. The results show a sustained growth in the volume of publications over the last decade, as well as the consolidation of academic collaboration networks and the emergence of new thematic lines in the field. In particular, metaheuristic algorithms have demonstrated a significant and growing impact, constituting a fundamental pillar in the advancement and methodological diversification of the exploration–exploitation balance. This work provides a quantitative framework and a structured view of the evolution of research, identifies the main actors and trends, and raises opportunities for future lines of research in the field of optimization using metaheuristics, the most prominent instantiation of bio-inspired optimization algorithms. Radon anomalies have long been explored as potential geochemical precursors to seismic activity due to their responsiveness to subsurface stress variations. However, before this study, the scientific progression of this research domain had not been systematically examined through a quantitative lens. This study presents a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of 379 articles published between 1977 and 2025 and indexed in Scopus and Web of Science. Utilizing the Bibliometrix R-package and its Biblioshiny interface, the analysis investigates temporal publication trends, leading countries, institutions, international collaboration networks, and thematic evolution. The results reveal a marked increase in research output since 2010, with China, India, and Italy emerging as the most prolific contributors. Thematic mapping indicates a shift from conventional geochemical monitoring toward the integration of artificial intelligence techniques, such as decision trees and neural networks, for anomaly detection and predictive modeling. Notwithstanding this methodological evolution, core research themes remain centered on radon concentration monitoring and the analysis of environmental parameters. Overall, the findings highlight the coexistence of traditional and emerging approaches, emphasizing the importance of standardized methodologies and interdisciplinary collaboration. This bibliometric synthesis provides strategic insights to inform future research and strengthen the role of radon monitoring in seismic early warning systems. Full article

We live in an era where digitalization and omnichannel strategies significantly transform retail landscapes, and accurate spatial analytics from Geographic Information Systems (GIS) can deliver substantial competitive benefits. Nonetheless, despite evident practical advantages for specific targeting strategies and operational efficiency, the degree of GIS integration into academic marketing literature remains ambiguous. Clarifying this uncertainty is beneficial for advancing theoretical understanding and ensuring retail strategies fully leverage robust, data-driven spatial intelligence. To examine the intellectual development of the field, co-occurrence analysis, topic mapping, and citation structure visualization were performed on 4952 peer-reviewed articles using the Bibliometrix R package (version 4.3.3) within R software (version 4.4.1). The results demonstrate that although GIS-based methods have been effectively incorporated into fields like site selection and spatial segmentation, traditional marketing research has not yet entirely adopted them. One of the study’s key findings is the distinction between “author keywords” and “keywords plus,” where researchers concentrate on novel topics like omnichannel retail, artificial intelligence, and logistics. However, “Keywords plus” still refers to more traditional terms such as pricing, customer satisfaction, and consumer behavior. This discrepancy presents a misalignment between current research trends and indexed classification practices. Although the mainstream retail research lacks terminology connected to geomarketing, a theme evolution analysis reveals a growing focus on technology-driven and sustainability-related concepts associated with the Retail 4.0 and 5.0 paradigms. These findings underscore a conceptual and structural deficiency in the literature and indicate the necessity for enhanced integration of GIS and spatial decision support systems (SDSS) in retail marketing. Biomimetic lattice structures, inspired by natural architectures such as bone, coral, mollusk shells, and Euplectella aspergillum, have gained increasing attention for their exceptional strength-to-weight ratios, energy absorption, and deformation control. These properties make them ideal for advanced engineering applications in aerospace, biomedical devices, and structural impact protection. This study presents a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of global research on biomimetic lattice structures published between 2020 and 2025, aiming to identify thematic trends, collaboration patterns, and underexplored areas. A curated dataset of 3685 publications was extracted from databases like PubMed, Dimensions, Scopus, IEEE, Google Scholar, and Science Direct and merged together. After the removal of duplication and cleaning, about 2226 full research articles selected for the bibliometric analysis excluding review works, conference papers, book chapters, and notes using Cite space, VOS viewer version 1.6.20, and Bibliometrix R packages (4.5. 64-bit) for mapping co-authorship networks, institutional affiliations, keyword co-occurrence, and citation relationships. A significant increase in the number of publications was found over the past year, reflecting growing interest in this area. The results identify China as the most prolific contributor, with substantial institutional support and active collaboration networks, especially with European research groups. Key research focuses include additive manufacturing, finite element modeling, machine learning-based design optimization, and the performance evaluation of bioinspired geometries. Notably, the integration of artificial intelligence into structural modeling is accelerating a shift toward data-driven design frameworks. However, gaps remain in geometric modeling standardization, fatigue behavior analysis, and the real-world validation of lattice structures under complex loading conditions. This study provides a strategic overview of current research directions and offers guidance for future interdisciplinary exploration. The insights are intended to support researchers and practitioners in advancing next-generation biomimetic materials with superior mechanical performance and application-specific adaptability. Water is an essential resource for life; however, the quality of available water on the planet has been compromised due to various factors, including microbiological contamination. Objective: To analyze the global scientific production of microbiological water contamination using bibliometric methods. Method: A search for scientific articles was conducted using the advanced query function in the Web of Science™ database, specifically in its core collection, on 26 February 2025. Data from 2000 articles were analyzed using the Bibliometrix package in R (version 4.2.1) and the Biblioshiny application (version 2.0). Results: The evaluated articles were published between 1952 and 2025, with a peak in publications in 2022. The journal Water Research stood out as the most relevant, publishing 128 articles. The Egyptian Knowledge Bank was identified as the most productive institution, while China had the highest number of contributing authors. The most cited article received 475 citations. Additionally, KeyWords Plus™ highlighted the focus of the studies on ecological and biotechnological methods for contaminant removal, as well as the presence of waterborne pathogens and their inactivation methods. Conclusions: The results show a growing interest in the development of ecological and biotechnological methods for contaminant removal and pathogen inactivation in water. The integration of artificial intelligence with real-time monitoring systems emerges as a promising strategy for improving water quality management. These findings highlight the relevance of the topic for public health and health education. Full article

Food security constitutes a fundamental pillar of future sustainable development. A systematic evaluation of the impact of urban expansion on food security is critical to advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly “Zero Hunger” (SDG 2). Drawing on bibliographic data from the Web of Science Core Collection, this study employs the bibliometrix package in R to conduct a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of the literature on the “urban expansion–food security” nexus spanning from 1982 to 2024. The analysis focuses on knowledge production, collaborative structures, and thematic research trends. The results indicate the following: (1) The publication trajectory in this field exhibits a generally increasing trend with three distinct phases: an incubation period (1982–2000), a development phase (2001–2014), and a phase of rapid growth (2015–2024). Land Use Policy stands out as the most influential journal in the domain, with an average citation rate of 43.5 per article. (2) China and the United States are the leading contributors in terms of publication output, with 3491 and 1359 articles, respectively. However, their international collaboration rates remain relatively modest (0.19 and 0.35) and considerably lower than those observed for the United Kingdom (0.84) and Germany (0.76), suggesting significant potential for enhanced global research cooperation. (3) The major research hotspots cluster around four core areas: urban expansion and land use dynamics, agricultural systems and food security, environmental and climate change, and socio-economic and policy drivers. These focal areas reflect a high degree of interdisciplinary integration, particularly involving land system science, agroecology, and socio-economic studies. Collectively, the field has established a relatively robust academic network and coherent knowledge framework. Nonetheless, it still confronts several limitations, including geographical imbalances, fragmented research scales, and methodological heterogeneity. Future efforts should emphasize cross-regional, interdisciplinary, and multi-scalar integration to strengthen the systematic understanding of urban expansion–food security interactions, thereby informing global strategies for sustainable development. Objectives: An aging population and declining birth rates are among the challenges that smart cities currently face and will continue to face in the near future. In light of the above, this article seeks to answer the following question: Are older people (seniors) taken into account and described in the literature on smart cities, and if so, how? Methods: To answer this research question, a systematic literature review was conducted using the Bibliometrix package in R. In the process of systematizing the publications, the authors additionally used the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) method and qualitative text analysis. Findings: The research shows that relatively little attention is paid to seniors in smart cities in the literature on the subject. Among the few publications on smart aging, the technological trend dominates, in which researchers present the possibilities of using IT and ICT to improve medical and social care for seniors, and to improve their quality of life (Smart Living, Smart Mobility). In the non-technological trend, most analyses focus on the determinants of quality of life and the distinguishing features of senior-friendly cities. Implications: There is a clear lack of a “human” perspective on aging in smart cities and publications on Smart Governance and Smart People that would provide guidelines for making elderly people full and equal stakeholders in smart cities. It is also necessary to develop practical documents and procedures that define a comprehensive and long-term urban policy for elderly adults. The analyses contribute to diagnosing current and determining further directions of research on smart aging in smart cities. The results clearly imply the need to intensify social, humanistic, and governance research on the role of seniors in smart cities. Full article

This study presents a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of the evolving landscape of data protection in medicine, examining research trends, thematic developments, and scholarly contributions from the 1960s to 2024. By analyzing 2159 publications indexed in the Scopus database using the Bibliometrix R package (v.4.3.2), based on R (v.4.4.3), this paper maps key research areas, leading journals, and international collaboration patterns. Our findings reveal a significant shift in focus over time, from early concerns centered on data privacy and management to contemporary themes involving advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, and big data analytics. This transition reflects the increasing complexity of balancing data accessibility with security, ethical, and regulatory requirements in healthcare. This analysis also highlights persistent challenges, including fragmented research efforts, disparities in global contributions, and the ongoing need for interdisciplinary collaboration. These insights offer a valuable foundation for future investigations into medical data governance and emphasize the importance of ethical and responsible innovation in an increasingly digital healthcare environment. Due to the rise in emerging strategic industries and the widespread application of new and improved technology, the global demand for strategic mineral resources has rapidly increased. Among these, fluorite is one of the most crucial strategic mineral resources in the world. However, so far, there are few comprehensive reviews of the progress in technology supporting the utilization of fluorite resources. In this work, the Bibliometrix package (version 4.5.0), VOSviewer (version 1.6.20), CiteSpace (version 6.4.R1), and the Web of Science Core Collection database were employed, and 2472 publications related to fluorite resource utilization technology (published from 1999 to 2024) were studied via a detailed analysis of the following four aspects: 1. the characteristics of the publications; 2. journal distribution, co-cited journals, and co-cited references; 3. active countries, institutions, and authors; and 4. popular research topics, including theme evolution, keyword co-occurance, and keyword burst analysis. In this work, an outline of the research and progress in fluorite resource utilization technology over the past 25 years is presented, which supports systematic evaluations of the trends in science and technology in related fields and contributes to the development of technology enabling the utilization of fluorite resources. Sustainability has become one of the main drivers of organizational performance. This study investigates the integration of sustainability with the balanced scorecard (BSC) as a framework for translating environmental management strategy into organizational performance. This review also seeks to map sustainability balanced scorecard (SBSC) research, clarifying its current role and identifying gaps and opportunities for future research. To achieve this, we sourced and reviewed 247 publications from the Web of Science index, corresponding to 129 scientific journals and 57 conference proceedings. Our analysis included content analysis and bibliometric analysis performed using the R packages Bibliometrix (version: 4.3.5), Biblioshiny, and CiteSpace (6.3.R1 Basic). The findings revealed that the SBSC enhances organizational capacity to align sustainability with strategic objectives, although significant implementation barriers remain, such as the selection of appropriate sustainability indicators and organizational resistance. This study contributes to advancing the theoretical and practical understanding of the SBSC while offering pathways for future research and application across sectors. Full article

Clean hydrogen is expected to play a crucial role in the future decarbonized energy mix. This places the gasification of biomass as a critical conversion pathway for hydrogen production, owing to its carbon neutrality. However, there is limited research on the direction of the body of literature on this subject matter. Utilising the Bibliometrix package R, this paper conducts a systematic review and bibliometric analysis of the literature on gasification-derived hydrogen production over the previous three decades. The results show a decade-wise spike in hydrogen research, mostly contributed by China, the United States, and Europe, whereas the scientific contribution of Africa on the topic is limited, with less than 6% of the continent’s research output on the subject matter sponsored by African institutions. The current trend of the research is geared towards alignment with the Paris Agreement through feedstock diversification to include renewable sources such as biomass and municipal solid waste and decarbonising the gasification process through carbon-capture technologies. This review reveals a gap in the experimental evaluation of heterogenous organic municipal solid waste for hydrogen production through gasification within the African context. The study provides an incentive for policy actors and researchers to advance the green hydrogen economy in Africa. Full article

This study explores the emerging link between digital marketing and the circular economy, situated within the broader context of sustainability and digital transformation. Through a scientometric analysis of 276 documents indexed in Scopus, the research maps the conceptual, intellectual, and collaborative landscape of this intersection. The dataset was refined using the PRISMA standards, and the analysis was carried out with the R package bibliometrix. The findings reveal a highly fragmented body of literature, with a few prolific authors and limited international cooperation. Most of the influential publications are concentrated in a small number of sources, particularly the journal Sustainability. Thematic mapping identifies growing interest in areas such as consumer perception, sustainable development, and the adoption of digital tools by micro-enterprises, while other topics like recycling or public health remain peripheral. Although the scholarly output has surged in recent years (especially during 2023 and 2024), the field still lacks coherent theoretical frameworks or dominant research schools. Overall, digital marketing appears to be a promising driver for promoting circular practices, but further applied studies and enhanced international collaboration are essential to consolidate this line of inquiry.
