Emerging research evokes selection for various plant secondary compounds as a potential driver of ruminant diet selection, through animals’ evident ability to rectify deficiencies and even self-medicate. This idea was assessed by comparing physiological responses to vaccination challenges of animals fed diets of differing phytochemical composition. In the first of three separate trials, goats were placed in individual pens and fed one of three treatments in a completely randomized design. Treatments in Trial 1 consisted of redberry juniper (50 g) and shin oak (50 g). In Trial 2, goats were fed rations containing grape and blueberry pomace at an inclusion rate of 20%. In Trial 3, black Angus heifers were fed rations containing grape and blueberry pomace at an as-fed inclusion rate of 6%. Average daily gain, intake, and blood chemistry were assessed following vaccination health challenges. In Trial 1, goats fed shin oak had higher (p < 0.05) blood globulins. Trial 2 revealed no treatment group differences in average daily gain (ADG), intake, or blood parameters evaluated. In Trial 3, no difference occurred in blood parameters; however, intake following inoculation was significantly greater (p < 0.05) for heifers with grape/blueberry pomace included in their rations. In conclusion, phytochemicals, specifically condensed tannins, may have the ability to enhance immune response in ruminants, but further research is required, and these effects likely depend upon the source, structure, and dose of tannins or parent plant materials offered. Utilizing paste feed within a recirculating aquaculture system for eel cultivation may lead to various challenges, such as water quality degradation and, hence, transitioning to floating pellet type feed becomes essential. In this study, we aimed to investigate the impact of different feed types (paste and floating extruded pellet) and rearing systems (recirculating aquaculture and flow through system) on water quality, growth, blood chemistry, body composition, and expression levels of digestive enzymes in Japanese eels (Anguilla japonica). Throughout the experiment, notable variations were observed in total ammonia nitrogen and nitrite nitrogen levels, with higher concentrations in the recirculating aquaculture system (1.00 ± 0.64 and 0.757 ± 0.464 mg/L, respectively) than paste groups (0.859 ± 0.651 and 0.485 ± 0.502 mg/L, respectively). Significant differences were observed in weight gain and specific growth rates, with the pellet group (154 ± 10% and 1.50 ± 0.06%/day, respectively) exhibiting higher values than the paste group (135 ± 13% and 1.37 ± 0.09%/day, respectively). Blood parameters showed significant differences depending on the culture system, with generally higher values observed in the flow-through system, while no significant differences were observed between feed types. Whole-body composition exhibited variations attributed to feed intake, with notable differences in crude protein and crude fat content among the experimental groups. The expression levels of digestive enzymes and nutrient transporters were higher when the eels were fed pellet-type feed and reared in recirculating aquaculture system. The study findings indicate that pellet feed enhances water quality management in RAS, leading to improved eel growth. Given its lower environmental stress, pellet feed is preferable to paste feed for optimizing eel production in RAS. Full article

Background/Objectives: Exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is linked to increased cardiovascular risk, particularly in individuals with hypertension. This study examined the association between dietary patterns, lifestyle factors, and vascular inflammation among individuals with hypertension living in rural and peri-urban areas of Chiang Mai Province, Thailand. Methods: A cross-sectional pilot study was conducted among 47 participants (23 rural, 24 peri-urban). Data on dietary intake, smoking, alcohol use, anthropometry, and blood chemistry were collected. Serum intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were measured. Partial correlation analysis was used to examine associations with lifestyle factors, adjusting for relevant covariates. Results: Peri-urban participants had significantly higher levels of ICAM-1 [83.0 vs. 50.1 ng/mL], VCAM-1 [639.3 vs. 376.5 ng/mL], and IL-6 [4.80 vs. 1.02 pg/mL] compared to rural participants. Rural individuals reported higher intakes of antioxidant-related nutrients (selenium, β-carotene, niacin, vitamins A, B6, and C), while peri-urban individuals had higher sugar intake. Sugar intake was positively associated with ICAM-1 and VCAM-1, whereas selenium and vitamin C were inversely associated with both ICAM-1 and VCAM-1, while vitamin B6 was inversely associated with VCAM-1 only. Although rural participants had a higher rate of current smoking (34.8% vs. 4.4%), smoking and alcohol use were not significantly associated with inflammatory markers. Conclusion: Rural dietary patterns may be linked to reduced vascular adhesion molecule levels. Further studies with larger samples are warranted to clarify these associations and guide lifestyle strategies for managing vascular inflammation in PM2.5-exposed individuals with hypertension. Background: Exercise-induced fatigue arises primarily from energy substrate depletion and the accumulation of metabolites such as lactate and ammonia, which impair performance and delay recovery. Emerging evidence implicates gut microbiota modulation—particularly via probiotics—as a means to optimize host energy metabolism and accelerate clearance of fatigue-associated by-products. Objective: This study aimed to determine whether live or heat-inactivated Lacticaseibacillus paracasei NB23 can enhance exercise endurance and attenuate fatigue biomarkers in a murine model. Methods: Forty male Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) mice were randomized into four groups (n = 10 each) receiving daily gavage for six weeks with vehicle, heat-killed NB23 (3 × 1010 cells/human/day), low-dose live NB23 (1 × 1010 CFUs/human/day), or high-dose live NB23 (3 × 1010 CFUs/human/day). Forelimb grip strength and weight-loaded swim-to-exhaustion tests assessed performance. Blood was collected post-exercise to measure serum lactate, ammonia, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and creatine kinase (CK). Liver and muscle glycogen content was also quantified, and safety was confirmed by clinical-chemistry panels and histological examination. Results: NB23 treatment produced dose-dependent improvements in grip strength (p < 0.01) and swim endurance (p < 0.001). All NB23 groups exhibited significant reductions in post-exercise lactate (p < 0.0001), ammonia (p < 0.001), BUN (p < 0.001), and CK (p < 0.0001). Hepatic and muscle glycogen stores rose by 41–59% and 65–142%, respectively (p < 0.001). No changes in food or water intake, serum clinical-chemistry parameters, or tissue histology were observed. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that both live and heat-treated L. paracasei NB23 may contribute to improved endurance performance, increased energy reserves, and faster clearance of fatigue-related metabolites in our experimental model. However, these results should be interpreted cautiously given the exploratory nature and limitations of our study. Full article

Growing freshwater fish in saline environments is being explored as a potential solution to the freshwater shortage. However, growing these organisms in suboptimal salinity conditions leads to chronic stress that can be challenging to manage. To address this goal, it is crucial to improve the health of fish through the use of dietary supplements. This study evaluated the effects of varying levels of arginine supplementation on the growth, health status, and expression of stress-related molecular markers in juveniles of Nile tilapia exposed to chronic salinity stress. The tilapia were fed four experimental diets supplemented with 0, 1, 2, and 3% of L-arginine (T0, T1, T2, and T3). After an acclimatization period, the tilapias were exposed to a salinity level of 20‰ for 57 days in a recirculating aquaculture system. Our findings revealed that overall performance parameters were significantly influenced by L-arginine supplementation, except for the condition factor, viscerosomatic index, and hepatosomatic index. Additionally, intermediate levels of L-arginine supplementation positively influenced various blood parameters, including hematological profiles (hemoglobin and leukocytes), blood chemistry (total protein, albumin, globulin, and triglycerides), and the frequency of certain nuclear abnormalities. Furthermore, L-arginine supplementation appeared to regulate the expression of molecular markers related to stress and the immune system. In conclusion, this study indicates that L-arginine supplementation can help alleviate the chronic stress caused by salinity in juvenile Nile tilapia. Full article

Background: Core laboratory chemistry analyzers typically use plasma and serum samples, while blood gas instruments use whole blood for electrolyte and metabolite tests. Due to high costs to back up the core lab chemistry analyzers, especially in the remote small community hospitals, we have verified the interchangeability of serum/plasma electrolytes and metabolites on blood gas instruments (GEM4000 and Radiometer ABL90) vs. chemistry analyzers. In this study, we sought to extend the investigation to another blood gas device—Radiometer ABL837. Methods: One plasma separator tube and one serum separator tube were drawn from 20 apparently healthy individuals and outpatients and 20 intensive care unit patients. All the samples were run on Roche Cobas8000, and then were run on three Radiometer ABL837 analyzers for sodium (Na+), potassium (K+), chloride (Cl), glucose, lactate (plasma only), and creatinine parameters. Paired measurements between the ABL837 and Cobas8000 were compared, and their difference were assessed for statistical and clinical significance. Results: ABL837 demonstrated statistical significance (p < 0.05) vs. Cobas8000 on all the plasma and serum parameters. However, no parameter differences were found when comparing the plasma/serum results on ABL837 to those on Cobas8000, indicating that none were clinically significant. ABL837 also demonstrated good–excellent correlations with Cobas8000 on all the parameters. Conclusions: When comparing metabolite and electrolyte values with plasma and serum sample types, the ABL837 blood gas instruments and Cobas 8000 chemistry analyzer are interchangeable. These data proves that ABL837 can be used as a backup for a chemistry analyzer in measuring plasma and serum electrolyte and metabolite concentrations. Full article

The gastrointestinal tract mediates the absorption of nutrients from the diet, which is increasingly contaminated with toxic metal(loid) species (TMs) and thus threatens food safety. Evidence in support of the influx of TMs into the bloodstream of the general and vulnerable populations (babies, children, pregnant women, and industrial workers) has been obtained by accurately quantifying their blood concentrations. The interpretation of these TM blood concentrations, however, is problematic, as we cannot distinguish between those that are tolerable from those that may cause the onset of environmental diseases. Since TMs that have invaded the bloodstream may perturb biochemical processes therein that will eventually cause organ damage it is crucial to better understand their bioinorganic chemistry as these processes collectively determine their organ availability. Thus, bioinorganic processes of TMs in the bloodstream represent selectivity filters which protect organs from their influx and ultimately determine the corresponding exposure-response relationships. The need to better understand selectivity filters prompted us to mechanistically disentangle them into the major bioinorganic chemistry processes. It is argued that the detoxification of TMs in the bloodstream and the biomolecular mechanisms, which mediate their uptake into target organs, represent critical knowledge gaps to revise regulatory frameworks to reduce the disease burden. Flavonols, representing a subclass of flavonoids, are an important group of polyphenols. Their activity is associated with a number of beneficial properties, including hepatoprotective, senolytic, neuroprotective, and anticancer properties. They are found abundantly in many fruits, vegetables, and plant products, but flavonols’ chemistry and structural properties result in their low bioavailability in vivo. In recent years, more and more studies have emerged that aim to increase the therapeutic potential of compounds belonging to this group, including by developing innovative nanoformulations. The present work focuses on the various steps, such as chemical analysis of the compounds, preformulation studies using drug delivery systems, preclinical studies, and finally clinical trials. Each of these elements is important not only for the innovation and efficacy of the therapy but most importantly for the patient’s health. There are also a limited number of studies assessing the population concentration of flavonols in the blood; therefore, this review presents an up-to-date survey of the most recent developments, using the most important compounds from the flavonol group. Background: Several blood biomarkers have shown a major role in predicting major adverse complications (MACs) in patients who have undergone cardiac surgery. Here, we aimed to investigate the possible role of the blood urea nitrogen (BUN) to serum albumin ratio (BAR) and the inflammatory prognostic index (IPI) in predicting major adverse complication after surgical aorta valve replacement (SAVR). Methods: The clinical, echocardiographic, and clinical-chemistry laboratory data of 195 patients who underwent SAVR were evaluated. The post-surgical MACs (death, surgical re-exploration, myocardial infarction and cerebral ischemia) during the hospitalization were recorded. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were studied by comparing the basic clinical features, echocardiographic parameters, and patients’ hematological indices between patients with or without MACs. Results: The mean age was 66.1 years, and 62.5% were males. Logistic regression analysis showed that the left atrium volume (LAV), BAR, and IPI as either continuous or categorical variables were independently associated with MACs. Moreover, we found a combined effect of higher LAV with a higher value of BAR or IPI. Combined higher levels of LAV and BAR increased the risk of developing MACs by 9.8 (CI 95% = 2.8–34.3, p = 0.0003), while higher values of LAV and IPI increased the risk of developing MACs by 4.5. Conclusions: Higher levels of BAR and IPI, alone or in combination with higher LAVs, showed an independent predictive value of MACs after SAVR. These findings strongly support the importance of evaluating easily available biomarkers of the pre-operative status of patients in order to predict adverse outcomes. Full article

The white snook (Centropomus viridis) is an emerging aquaculture species with high market acceptance, exhibiting catadromous and protandric hermaphroditic characteristics in adulthood. This study aimed to preliminarily characterize certain hematological and biochemical parameters, as well as blood cell morphology, for identifying possible variations between sexes maintained under aquaculture recirculating system (RAS) conditions. The white snook broodstock was anesthetized with clove oil, and biometric values, as well as sex classification, were measured. Then, blood samples were collected from 14 females (7132 ± 1610 g) and 20 males (2200 ± 0.963 g) via caudal vessel puncture to analyze selected hematological parameters, blood biochemistry, and cellular morphology. Fulton’s condition factor (K) showed no differences between sexes, indicating a healthy fish status. Females showed significantly higher serum cholesterol, glucose, and triglyceride levels than males. Also, hematocrit (HCT) and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) were elevated in females. No sex-related differences were observed in red or white cell counts or in blood cell dimensions. Morphological characterization identified erythrocytes, thrombocytes, and three types of leukocytes: lymphocytes (small and large lymphocytes), neutrophils, and monocytes, with no eosinophils or basophils detected in either sex. These findings provide fundamental reference values for the hematological and biochemical profiles of C. viridis broodstock in captivity and highlight sex-specific differences relevant for reproductive and health monitoring. However, it should be considered that the sample size used to establish reference ranges for the species is small, so it is recommended to implement a monitoring plan for this and other broodstocks of this emerging species. Background: Rigorous evaluation of vacuum blood collection tubes is essential to ensure the reliability of laboratory results. Methods: In this study, we compared the serum separator tube V-Tube™ (V-Tube SST), the quick-clotting serum separator tube VQ-Tube™ (VQ-Tube SST), and the K2EDTA V-Tube™ (V-Tube K2EDTA) manufactured by AB Medical (Seoul, Republic of Korea), with their respective counterparts from Becton Dickinson (BD, Franklin Lakes, NJ, USA): BD Vacutainer® SST™ II Advance Tube (BD SST) and BD Vacutainer® K2EDTA 5.4 mg Tube (BD K2EDTA). The evaluation encompassed 61 measurands across the fields of chemistry, immunology, and hematology, and incorporated a stability assessment for the VQ-Tube SST. Results: The V-Tube SST, VQ-Tube SST, and V-Tube K2EDTA demonstrated comparable analytical performance to the BD tubes for the majority of measurands. However, glucose, lactate dehydrogenase, mean corpuscular volume, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration indicated clinically significant differences according to the desirable biological variation database (Ricos). Conclusions: These findings suggest that, while the V-tube and VQ-tube SST generally serve as alternatives to BD tubes, caution should be taken when interpreting results for specific measurands that demonstrated clinically significant discrepancies. Strength training has established itself as an essential component in physical conditioning programmes, not only to improve sports performance, but also for health purposes. To evaluate the effects of a strength training protocol with a predominance of the eccentric component on blood count, blood chemistry, and quadriceps muscle ultrasound in university students. 31 students (22.3 ± 4.14 years) of the professional programme in Sports of the Politécnico Colombiano Jaime Isaza Cadavid participated. A mesocycle was developed with three weekly sessions of eccentric training focused on the lower body and core zone. Pre and post-intervention measurements were taken anthropometry, haemogram, lipid profile, ultrasound of the right quadriceps, Bosco test, and Rockport test. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used, and the effect size was calculated using rank correlation. Statistically significant changes were observed in haematocrit, mean corpuscular volume, HDL, muscle thickness and echo-intensity, vertical jump power, and maximal oxygen consumption. A four-week eccentric strength training programme generates improvements in haematology, lipid profile, muscle quality assessed by ultrasound, and functional performance in university students. Thirty-two healthy adult dogs (16 males and 16 females) were fed control kibble diets for one month, followed by six months (Weeks 0 to 25) of diets containing either 0, 4, 6, or 8% cultured protein derived from Methylococcus capsulatus (FeedKind Pet®, FK), then they were fed control diets (0% FK) for a further two months (Weeks 25 to 34). The diets were isonitrogenous, isolipidic, and isocaloric and stage- and age-specific. The dogs were assessed for overall health, weight gain, and body condition score (BCS). Blood samples were collected 1 week prior to randomization, during acclimation, then in Weeks 5, 13, 25, 30, 32, and 34 for hematology, coagulation, and clinical chemistry; urine was collected according to the same time schedule for urinalysis. Feces were assessed for parasite load and presence of occult blood during Weeks 5, 9, 13, 17, 21, and 25. Fecal samples were collected during acclimation and Weeks 25 and 34 for fecal microbiome analysis and in Week 25 for apparent total gastrointestinal tract digestibility (ATTD). All dogs maintained a healthy weight and BCS throughout the study. Hematology parameters were within normal limits at the end of each phase of the study. With the exception of a decrease in serum phosphorus level and in urine pH in all groups at the end of the study, urine and serum chemistry results were within normal limits at the end of each phase. ATTD values for organic matter, protein, and energy exceeded 80%, whilst digestibility values for copper were around 20%. The fecal microbiome was dominated by Firmicutes. Alpha diversity increased during the safety phase before returning to baseline levels during the washout phase. The dominant genera in all groups were Megamonas, Peptoclostridium, Turicibacter, Catenibacterium, Fusobacterium, Romboutsia, and Blautia. The study has shown that the inclusion of cultured protein at up to 8% of the total diet of adult dogs can provide sufficient nutrition and is safe with no long-term effects on a range of health parameters. BYVET JOINT HEALTM (BJH) contains mucopolysaccharide protein, chondroitin sulfate, type II collagen, and omega-3 fatty acids, which protect and prevent osteoarthritis (OA)-associated tissue damage and degradation in dogs and cats. This study aimed to generate a novel dietary supplement and evaluate its prevention and therapeutic efficacy in an OA Sprague Dawley rat model induced using monosodium iodoacetate (MIA). Negative control, MIA-induced OA control (MIA), OA rats treated with BJH three weeks after (M+BJH3) and those treated two weeks before and three weeks after OA induction (BJH2+M+BJH3) groups were assigned. M+BJH3 and BJH2+M+BJH3 had similar mean body weight increases until 29 days. BJH2+M+BJH3 showed a significantly higher body weight than M+BJH3 and MIA on the final day. Interleukin-1β in BJH2+M+BJH3 was significantly lower than that in MIA. Tumor necrosis factor-α, aggrecan, matrix metalloproteinases13, and cyclooxygenase-2 levels in M+BJH3 and BJH2+M+BJH3 significantly differed compared to those in MIA. BJH administration before OA induction significantly decreased OA severity and functional recovery. Consuming a BJH supplement showed modifying and chondroprotective effects and significantly reduced cartilage degeneration and inflammation with no side effects. Hence, our findings demonstrate the potential of using BJH as a safe therapeutic and preventive supplement for OA and associated cartilage abnormalities. Also, 30 dogs diagnosed with OA by a veterinarian participated in the clinical trial, and BJH was provided for 8 weeks. Blood tests (CBC, serum chemistry) and joint assessment were performed before and after the feeding, and the effects of a BJH supplement were compared. BJH supplement was easy to administer, and no side effects were reported. Feeding BJH supplementation alone to dogs with arthritis had an overall positive effect on arthritis scores for 8 weeks without any other treatment, including non-steroidal drugs. Full article

The biologic response following the insertion of dental implants is a widely studied process. Recent research has highlighted the importance of implant surface topography and chemistry as highly influential factors in consolidating the dental implant with the surrounding biological environment. The hydrophilicity, or wettability, of dental implants plays a pivotal role in these interactions and successful osseointegration. A more well-established factor that can also influence the development of the tissue–implant interface is exposure to tobacco smoke. While the negative impact of smoking on the biological response of the tissue is clear, there has been no research evaluating the impact that tobacco smoke can have directly on the surface chemistry of dental implants. The present study aimed to explore the effect of smoking on implant surface chemistry and wettability in vitro. Five different implant disks (Ti-Mach, Ti-SLA, Ti-Alloy, Zirc-1 and Zirc-2) were subjected to contamination with tobacco smoke using a portable smoke infuser with dome enclosure. Occasional smoking (5×/day 10 min each for 3 days) and heavy smoking (20×/day for 10 min each for 10 days) were simulated. The wettability of the implant disks was evaluated via the contact angle technique using artificial blood and albumin, as well as saline as a control. It was determined that the contamination of implant surfaces due to smoking produces changes in the surface chemistry and wettability. Changes in the surface hydrophilicity differed based on the implant material. Within the constraints of this investigation, tobacco smoke improved the hydrophilicity of titanium surfaces but worsened that of ceramic surfaces when utilizing the testing solutions. Different implant surfaces exhibit different wetting behavior following contamination with nicotine smoke. This might have an impact on the treatment of peri-implantitis in smokers due to changes in implant surface hydrophilicity, which can affect the re-osseointegration process. Full article
