To reveal how the altitude gradient regulates the effects of rhizosphere microbial dynamics on ecosystem multifunctionality in Hylodesmum podocarpum, a field experiment was conducted across four elevation transects (a.s. 896–1805 m) in the Qinling Mountains. The results showed that rhizosphere soil exhibited peak microbial diversity richness at 1805 m (HB4), with bacterial communities showing a strong interspecific cooperative relationship, while the fungal communities showed a competitive relationship. In addition, this study found the assembly process to be different. Bacterial assemblages changed from random processes (HB1, HB2, HB3) to deterministic processes (HB4), whereas fungal assemblages remained stochastic processes across all elevations. Our results also revealed that synergistic interactions among soil carbon, phosphorus, and nitrogen nutrient functions collectively enhanced nutrient-centered soil multifunctionality. Notably, carbon and phosphorus nutrient functions emerged as the primary drivers of soil multifunctionality. Further mechanistic analysis revealed that while soil pH exerted significant control over both carbon and nitrogen nutrient functions, microbial mediation exhibited functional specialization: bacterial communities predominantly regulated carbon cycling, whereas fungal communities played a more comprehensive role in modulating carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus dynamics along with overall ecosystem multifunctionality. This finding suggested that altitude gradients indirectly affect the characteristics of the microbial community by regulating soil nutrient status, thereby driving changes in ecosystem multifunctionality. This finding provides new insights into how nutrients regulate ecosystem functions through microbial pathways. Full article

Environmental innovation represents a pivotal pathway toward achieving energy efficiency improvements, carbon footprint reduction, and ecological sustainability enhancement. The research investigates Chinese manufacturing enterprises listed on domestic stock exchanges throughout 2011–2023. The analytical framework utilizes count-based regression methodologies to explore how R&D investment intensity influences eco-innovation capabilities. Results demonstrate curvilinear associations linking R&D expenditure levels with both substantive and strategic environmental innovation achievements across industrial firms. This outcome successfully passed the turning-point test. Environmental oversight and financial incentives produce divergent moderating influences on innovation trajectories. Regulatory frameworks generate restrictive impacts through narrowing optimal investment ranges and dampening peak innovation outputs, whereas fiscal support mechanisms foster expansive effects via broadening resource availability and amplifying achievement levels. Cross-sectional examination uncovers substantial variations among ownership categories and geographical locations. State-owned enterprises demonstrate significantly lower optimal R&D intensity thresholds. Private firms require substantially elevated thresholds for optimal performance. Inland territories manifest unbalanced innovation dynamics. Coastal areas exhibit symmetric innovation patterns. The research enriches empirical knowledge in eco-innovation studies while offering context-specific strategic insights. The findings establish theoretical foundations and practical guidance for policy architects designing integrated environmental management systems that enhance innovation capabilities. Full article

This study presents a high-performance external strengthening strategy for reinforced concrete (RC) beam–column joints, integrating near-surface mounted (NSM) Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (C-FRP) ropes with externally bonded C-FRP sheets. The X-shaped ropes, anchored diagonally on both principal joint faces and complemented by vertical ropes at column corners, provide enhanced core confinement and shear reinforcement. C-FRP sheets applied to the beam’s plastic hinge region further increase flexural strength and delay localized failure. Three full-scale, shear-deficient RC joints were subjected to cyclic lateral loading. The unstrengthened specimen (JB0V) exhibited rapid stiffness deterioration, premature joint shear cracking, and unstable hysteretic behavior. In contrast, the specimen strengthened solely with X-shaped C-FRP ropes (JB0VF2X2c) displayed a markedly slower rate of stiffness degradation, delayed crack development, and improved energy dissipation stability. The fully retrofitted specimen (JB0VF2X2c + C-FRP) demonstrated the most pronounced gains, with peak load capacity increased by 65%, equivalent viscous damping enhanced by 55%, and joint shear deformations reduced by more than 40%. Even at 4% drift, it retained over 90% of its peak strength, while localizing damage away from the joint core—a performance unattainable by the unstrengthened configuration. These results clearly establish that the combined C-FRP rope–sheet system transforms the seismic response of deficient RC joints, offering a lightweight, non-invasive, and rapidly deployable retrofit solution. By simultaneously boosting shear resistance, ductility, and energy dissipation while controlling damage localization, the technique provides a robust pathway to extend service life and significantly enhance post-earthquake functionality in critical structural connections. The excessive emission of cadmium (Cd2+) poses a serious threat to the aquatic environment due to its high toxicity and bioaccumulation potential. This study constructed three types of vertical-subsurface-flow constructed wetlands configured with iron–carbon–zeolite composite substrates, including an iron–carbon–zeolite constructed wetland (TF-CW), a zeolite–iron–carbon constructed wetland (FT-CW), and an iron–carbon–zeolite mixed constructed wetland (H-CW), to investigate the purification performance and mechanisms of constructed wetlands for cadmium-containing wastewater (0~6 mg/L). The results demonstrated that iron–carbon–zeolite composite substrates significantly enhanced Cd2+ removal efficiency (>99%) through synergistic redox-adsorption mechanisms, where the iron–carbon substrate layer dominated Fe-Cd co-precipitation, while the zeolite layer achieved short-term cadmium retention through ion-exchange adsorption. FT-CW exhibited superior NH4+-N removal efficiency (77.66%~92.23%) compared with TF-CW (71.45%~88.05%), while iron–carbon micro-electrolysis effectively inhibited NO3-N accumulation (<0.1 mg/L). Under cadmium stress, Typha primarily accumulated cadmium through its root systems (>85%) and alleviated oxidative damage by dynamically regulating antioxidative enzyme activity, with the superoxide dismutase (SOD) peak occurring at 3 mg/L Cd2+ treatment. Microbial community analysis revealed that iron–carbon substrates promoted the relative abundance of Bacteroidota and Patescibacteria as well as the enrichment of Saccharimonadales, Thauera, and Rhodocyclaceae (genera), enhancing system stability. This study confirms that iron–carbon–zeolite CWs provide an efficient and sustainable technological pathway for heavy metal-contaminated water remediation through multidimensional mechanisms of “chemical immobilization–plant enrichment–microbial metabolism”. Atmospheric aerosols are recognized as a major air pollutant with significant impacts on human health, air quality, and climate. Yet, the chemical composition and seasonal variability of aerosols remain underexplored in several Western Mediterranean regions. This study presents a year-long investigation of PM2.5 and PM10 in Tetouan, Northern Morocco, where both local emissions and regional transport influence air quality. PM2.5 and PM10 samples were collected and analysed for total mass and comprehensive chemical characterization, including organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), water-soluble ions (WSIs), and sugar tracers (levoglucosan, arabitol, and glucose). Concentration-weighted trajectory (CWT) modelling and air mass back-trajectory analyses were used to assess potential source regions and transport pathways. PM2.5 concentrations ranged from 4.2 to 41.8 µg m−3 (annual mean: 18.0 ± 6.4 µg m−3), while PM10 ranged from 11.9 to 66.3 µg m−3 (annual mean: 30.8 ± 9.7 µg m−3), with peaks in winter and minima in spring. The PM2.5-to-PM10 ratio averaged 0.59, indicating a substantial accumulation of particle mass within the fine fraction, especially during the cold season. Carbonaceous aerosols dominated the fine fraction, with total carbonaceous aerosol (TCA) contributing ~52% to PM2.5 and ~34% to PM10. Secondary organic carbon (SOC) accounted for up to 90% of OC in PM2.5, reaching 7.3 ± 3.4 µg m−3 in winter. WSIs comprised ~39% of PM2.5 mass, with sulfate, nitrate, and ammonium as major components, peaking in summer. Sugar tracers exhibited coarse-mode dominance, reflecting biomass burning and biogenic activity. Concentration-weighted trajectory and back-trajectory analyses identified the Mediterranean Basin and Iberian Peninsula as dominant source regions, in addition to local urban emissions. Overall, this study attempts to fill a critical knowledge gap in Southwestern Mediterranean aerosol research by providing a comprehensive characterization of PM2.5 and PM10 chemical composition and their seasonal dynamics in Tetouan. It further offers new insights into how a combination of local emissions and regional transport shapes the aerosol composition in this North African urban environment. Full article

By integrating statistical modeling and data analysis techniques, we systematically assess the carbon emission performance of the ceramic industry and propose targeted emission reduction pathways. Firstly, the entropy weight TOPSIS model is employed to quantitatively evaluate the carbon emission performance of the three major Chinese ceramic production areas: Foshan, Jingdezhen, and Zibo. Through data-driven quantitative analysis, it is disclosed that the carbon emission intensity in Foshan is significantly higher than that in the other two regions (with a relative closeness degree of 0.5185). The key issues identified include high energy consumption in the production process, a high reliance on raw coal, and insufficient investment in environmental protection. Furthermore, through the XGBoost-SHAP combined modeling, the key drivers of carbon emissions are precisely identified from multi-dimensional data. It is found that the elasticity coefficient of raw coal in the carbon emission proportion is as high as 25.84%, while the potential for substitution with natural gas is remarkable. Based on statistical prediction techniques, a carbon emission trend model under the scenario of energy structure optimization is constructed, predicting that after reaching a peak in 2017, Foshan’s carbon emissions will continue to decline, with the proportion of raw coal dropping to 48% and that of natural gas rising to 10%, thereby verifying the feasibility of the green transformation. Additionally, a multi-agent carbon trading simulation model is constructed to explore the emission reduction behaviors of enterprises under different carbon price scenarios. This study not only achieves precise quantitative analysis of carbon emissions through statistical method innovation but also verifies the feasible paths of low-carbon transformation through data modeling. The decarbonization process of the carbon emissions in the Chinese building sector exerts a profound impact on the achievement of the national goals of carbon peak and carbon neutrality. Currently, there is limited literature quantifying the impact of laws and policies on the achievement of carbon peak in the Chinese building sector and further utilizing deep learning technology to characterize the carbon emissions peak path under uncertainty in the Chinese building sector. To address this issue, a quantitative framework of legal and policy incentive intensity is constructed to capture both the immediate effects and the long-term evolution of laws and policies, and the index of legal and policy incentive intensity for carbon emissions in the building sector in China from 2010 to 2022 is calculated. Based on this, a dynamic scenario forecasting model for carbon emissions in the Chinese building sector is developed by integrating a CNN-BiLSTM-AM model with the Monte Carlo simulation algorithm, embedded within the scenario analysis method. The model projects the dynamic trajectories of carbon emissions in the Chinese building sector under different scenarios from 2023 to 2050 and identifies effective schemes for controlling carbon emissions in the Chinese building sector. Results indicate that the growth in legal and policy incentive intensity was most significant during the 12th Five-Year Plan period in China. During the 13th Five-Year Plan in China, the legal and policy system became increasingly mature, leading to a diminishing marginal effect of newly issued policies. A negative growth in legal and policy incentive intensity was observed in 2020 due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. From 2021 to 2022, the annual growth rate of policy intensity began to rebound. Under the current scenario, carbon emissions in the Chinese building sector are projected to reach its carbon peak in 2036 (±1), with a peak level of 28.617 (±1.047) × 108 t CO2. Energy consumption per unit floor space, population size, legal and policy incentive intensity, integrated carbon emission factor, and floor space per capita are identified as the most critical factors influencing the timing and value of carbon peaking. The research methodology employed in this study not only provides scientific insights for the emission reduction efforts in the building sector but is also applicable to related studies in other industries’ energy conservation and emission reduction. The efficient and rational development of hydropower in the Lancang–Mekong River Basin can promote green energy transition, reduce carbon emissions, prevent and mitigate flood and drought disasters, and ensure the sustainable development of the entire basin. In this study, based on publicly available hydrometeorological observation data and satellite remote sensing monitoring data from 2001 to 2020, a machine learning model of the Lancang–Mekong Basin was developed to reconstruct the basin’s hydrological processes, and identify the occurrence patterns and influencing mechanisms of water-related hazards. The results show that, against the background of climate change, the Lancang–Mekong Basin is affected by the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme precipitation events. In particular, Rx1day, Rx5day, R10mm, and R95p (extreme precipitation indicators determined by the World Meteorological Organization’s Expert Group on Climate Change Monitoring and Extreme Climate Events) in the northwestern part of the Mekong River Basin show upward trends, with the average maximum daily rainfall increasing by 1.8 mm/year and the total extreme precipitation increasing by 18 mm/year on average. The risks of flood and drought disasters will continue to rise. The flood peak period is mainly concentrated in August and September, with the annual maximum flood peak ranging from 5600 to 8500 m3/s. The Stung Treng Station exhibits longer drought duration, greater severity, and higher peak intensity than the Chiang Saen and Pakse Stations. At the Pakse Station, climate change and hydropower development have altered the non-drought proportion by −12.50% and +15.90%, respectively. For the Chiang Saen Station, the fragmentation degree of the drought index time series under the baseline, naturalized, and hydropower development scenarios is 0.901, 1.16, and 0.775, respectively. These results indicate that hydropower development has effectively reduced the frequency of rapid drought–flood transitions within the basin, thereby alleviating pressure on drought management efforts. The regulatory role of the cascade reservoirs in the Lancang River can mitigate risks posed by climate change, weaken adverse effects, reduce flood peak flows, alleviate hydrological droughts in the dry season, and decrease flash drought–flood transitions in the basin. The research findings can enable basin managers to proactively address climate change, develop science-based technical pathways for hydropower dispatch, and formulate adaptive disaster prevention and mitigation strategies. This systematic review critically examines the benefits and challenges of high-compression-ratio (CR) implementation in hybrid-dedicated engines, recognizing CR increase as a pivotal strategy for enhancing the indicated thermal efficiency to achieve carbon peak and carbon neutrality goals. However, excessively high CRs face critical constraints, including intensified knock propensity, increased heat transfer (HTR) losses, reduced combustion stability, augmented dissociation losses, and cold-start misfire risks. The feasibility and necessity of CR enhancement in hybrid systems were comprehensively evaluated based on these factors, with fundamental mechanisms of the detrimental effects elucidated. To address these challenges, optimized countermeasures were synthesized: knock suppression via high-octane fuels, EGR technology, lean combustion, and in-cylinder water injection; heat transfer reduction through thermal barrier coatings and independent CR/expansion-ratio control; misfire risk monitoring using ion current or cylinder pressure sensors. These approaches provide viable pathways to overcome high-CR limitations and optimize engine performance. Nevertheless, current research remains confined to isolated solutions, warranting future focus on integrated optimization mechanisms investigating synergistic interactions of multiple strategies under high-CR conditions. Accomplishing China’s national targets of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality necessitates proactive solutions, hinging critically on fundamentally transforming rural construction models. Current construction practices in rural areas are characterized by inefficiency, high resource consumption, and reliance on imported materials. These shortcomings not only jeopardize the attainment of climate objectives, but also hinder equitable development between urban and rural regions. Using the Digital Industrial Park in Yongtai County, Fuzhou City, as a case study, this study focuses on prefabricated public buildings in regions with extreme hot–humid climate, and innovatively integrates BIM (Building Information Modeling)-driven carbon modeling with the Gaussian Two-Step Floating Catchment Area (G2SFCA) method for spatial accessibility assessment to investigate the carbon emissions and economic benefits of prefabricated buildings during the embodied stage, and analyzes the spatial accessibility of prefabricated building material suppliers in Fuzhou City and identifies associated bottlenecks, seeking pathways to promote sustainable rural revitalization. Compared with traditional cast-in-situ buildings, embodied carbon emissions of prefabricated during their materialization phase significantly reduced. This dual-perspective approach ensures that the proposed solutions possess both technical rigor and logistical feasibility. Promoting this model across rural areas sharing similar climatic conditions would advance the construction industry’s progress towards the dual carbon goals. Full article

The transportation sector, as a major source of carbon emissions, plays a crucial role in the realization of dual carbon goals worldwide. In this study, an improved least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) is used to identify six key factors affecting transportation carbon emissions (TCEs) in China. Aiming at the spatio-temporal characteristics of transportation carbon emissions, a CNN-BiLSTM neural network model is constructed for the first time for prediction, and an improved whale optimization algorithm (EWOA) is introduced for hyperparameter optimization, finding that the prediction model combining spatio-temporal characteristics has a more significant prediction accuracy, and scenario forecasting was carried out using the prediction model. Research indicates that over the past three decades, TCEs have demonstrated a rapid growth trend. Under the baseline, green, low-carbon, and high-carbon scenarios, peak carbon emissions are expected in 2035, 2031, 2030, and 2040. The adoption of a low-carbon scenario represents the most advantageous pathway for the sustainable progression of China’s transportation sector. Consequently, it is imperative for China to accelerate the formulation and implementation of low-carbon policies, promote the application of clean energy and facilitate the green transformation of the transportation sector. These efforts will contribute to the early realization of dual-carbon goals with a positive impact on global sustainable development. Full article

The mining industry (MI) in mineral-rich regions is pivotal for economic growth but is challenged by significant pollution and emissions. This study examines Guangxi, a representative region in China, in light of the country’s “Dual Carbon” goals. We quantified carbon emissions from the MI from 2005 to 2021, employing the generalized Divisia index method (GDIM) to analyze the factors driving these emissions. Additionally, a system dynamics (SD) model was developed, integrating economic, demographic, energy, environmental, and policy variables to assess decarbonization strategies and the potential for carbon decoupling. The key findings include the following: (1) Carbon accounting analysis reveals a rising emission trend in Guangxi’s MI, predominantly driven by electricity consumption, with the non-ferrous metal mining sector contributing the largest share of total emissions. (2) The primary drivers of carbon emissions were identified as economic scale, population intensity, and energy intensity, with periodic fluctuations in sector-specific drivers necessitating coordinated policy adjustments. (3) Scenario analysis showed that the Emission Reduction Scenario (ERS) is the only approach that achieves a carbon peak before 2030, indicating that it is the most effective decarbonization pathway. (4) Between 2022 and 2035, carbon decoupling from total output value is projected to improve under both the Energy-Saving Scenario (ESS) and ERS, achieving strong decoupling, while the resource extraction shows limited decoupling effects often displaying an expansionary connection. This study aims to enhance the understanding and promote the advancement of green and low-carbon development within the MI in mineral-rich regions. Full article

Understanding the carbon emission efficiency of apple production (APCEE) is critical for promoting green and low-carbon agricultural development. However, the spatiotemporal dynamics and driving factors of APCEE in China remain inadequately explored. This study employs life cycle assessment, super-efficiency slacks-based measures, and a panel Tobit model to evaluate the carbon footprint, APCEE, and its determinants in China’s two major production regions from 2003 to 2022. The results reveal that: (1) Producing one ton of apples in China results in 0.842 t CO2e emissions. Land carbon intensity and total carbon emissions peaked in 2010 (28.69 t CO2e/ha) and 2014 (6.52 × 107 t CO2e), respectively, exhibiting inverted U-shaped trends. Carbon emissions from various production areas show significant differences, with higher pressure on carbon emission reduction in the Loess Plateau region, especially in Gansu Province. (2) The APCEE in China exhibits a W-shaped trend (mean: 0.645), with overall low efficiency loss. The Bohai Bay region outperforms the Loess Plateau and national averages. (3) The structure of the apple industry, degree of agricultural mechanization, and green innovation positively influence APCEE, while the structure of apple cultivation, education level, and agricultural subsidies negatively impact it. Notably, green innovation and agricultural subsidies display lagged effects. Moreover, the drivers of APCEE differ significantly between the two major production regions. These findings provide actionable pathways for the green and low-carbon transformation of China’s apple industry, emphasizing the importance of spatially tailored green policies and technology-driven decarbonization strategies. This study presents a simulation-based damage modeling and fatigue risk assessment of a reusable ceramic matrix composite thruster designed for short-duration, green bipropellant propulsion systems. The thruster is constructed from a fiber-reinforced ultra-high temperature ceramic matrix composite composed of zirconium diboride, silicon carbide, and carbon fibers. Time-resolved thermal and structural simulations are conducted on a validated thruster geometry to characterize the severity of early-stage thermal shock, stress buildup, and potential degradation pathways. Unlike traditional fatigue studies that rely on empirical fatigue constants or Paris-law-based crack-growth models, this work introduces a simulation-derived stress-margin envelope methodology that incorporates ±20% variability in temperature-dependent material strength, offering a physically grounded yet conservative risk estimate. From this, a normalized risk index is derived to evaluate the likelihood of damage initiation in critical regions over the 0–10 s firing window. The results indicate that the convergent throat region experiences a peak thermal gradient rate of approximately 380 K/s, with the normalized thermal shock index exceeding 43. Stress margins in this region collapse by 2.3 s, while margin loss in the flange curvature appears near 8 s. These findings are mapped into green, yellow, and red risk bands to classify operational safety zones. All the results assume no active cooling, representing conservative operating limits. If regenerative or ablative cooling is implemented, these margins would improve significantly. The framework established here enables a transparent, reproducible methodology for evaluating lifetime safety in ceramic propulsion nozzles and serves as a foundational tool for fatigue-resilient component design in green space engines. Achieving carbon emission reductions in the residential building sector while maintaining economic growth represents a global challenge, particularly in rapidly developing regions with internal disparities. This study examines Jiangsu Province in eastern China—a economic hub with north-south development gradients—to develop an integrated framework for differentiated carbon reduction pathways. The methodology combines spatial autocorrelation analysis, logarithmic mean Divisia index (LMDI) decomposition, system dynamics modeling, and Tapio decoupling analysis to examine urban residential building emissions across three regions from 2016–2022. Results reveal significant spatial clustering of emissions (Moran’s I peaking at 0.735), with energy consumption per unit area as the dominant driver across all regions (contributing 147.61%, 131.60%, and 147.51% respectively). Scenario analysis demonstrates that energy efficiency policies can reduce emissions by 10.1% while maintaining 99.2% of economic performance, enabling carbon peak achievement by 2030. However, less developed northern regions emerge as binding constraints, requiring technology investments. Decoupling analysis identifies region-specific optimal pathways: conventional development for advanced regions, balanced approaches for transitional areas, and subsidies for lagging regions. These findings challenge assumptions about environment-economy trade-offs and provide a replicable framework for designing differentiated climate policies in heterogeneous territories, offering insights for similar regions worldwide navigating the transition to sustainable development.
