Technological Innovation, Industrial Structure Upgrading, and the Coordinated Development of Regional Economies

The purpose of this study is to systematically examine the impact of technological innovation on the coordinated development of regional economies and its internal mechanism. It is aimed at revealing whether and how technological innovation promotes the coordinated development of regional economies, and further identifying its heterogeneity characteristics and boundary conditions in the space–time dimension. The research was conducted using panel data for 258 prefecture-level cities in China from 2011 to 2021. This study found that technological innovation significantly promoted the coordinated development of regional economies; this effect was more prominent in China’s eastern region and the Yangtze River Economic Belt. The mechanism test shows that technological innovation can optimize regional resource allocation and narrow the development gap by promoting industrial structure upgrades and rationalization. Further analysis shows that the level of marketization has a nonlinear regulatory effect on the coordination effect of technological innovation, with two threshold levels. A heterogeneity analysis reveals significant differences in the effects of technological innovation in different regions in China, especially in the western region and the northwest side of the Hu Changyong line. The research leads to four key policy recommendations. First, it is important to strengthen the core driving role of technological innovation and implement regionally differentiated innovation support policies. Second, industrial structure upgrades should be encouraged through industrial chain coordination. The third recommendation is to improve the market-oriented institutional environment and minimize barriers to factor flow. Fourth, supporting coordinated policies, such as optimizing human capital and introducing high-quality foreign capital, is necessary to establish a sustainable long-term mechanism for regional coordinated development. This study investigates the factors influencing electric ride-hailing vehicle (ERV) adoption and market exit among ride-hailing drivers in underdeveloped cities, aiming to enhance industry operational efficiency and workforce stability. Using survey data from 630 drivers in Zhangzhou, Fujian Province, China, we employ statistical modeling to analyze heterogeneous mechanisms behind ERV acceptance and market-exit behavior. The results indicate that: (1) Drivers’ environmental awareness and positive attitudes toward new energy vehicle development significantly increase ERV adoption willingness, though weak policy implementation and misconceptions about electric vehicle technology are associated with these incentives. Unlike in developed regions, range anxiety is not a significant barrier in underdeveloped cities with limited operational ranges. (2) Concerning market-exit behavior, job intensity exhibits a U-shaped relationship with exit risk, while platform income redistribution adjustments emerge as a key external factor. Notably, local full-time drivers show a marked lag in technology adoption. The findings offer valuable insights for optimizing policies and promoting sustainable development in the ride-hailing industry in underdeveloped cities, providing practical guidance for policymakers and companies in shaping tailored industry regulations and operational strategies. From 31 August 2022 to early 2024, the City of Chicago welcomed nearly 40,000 migrants. Chicago had designated itself as a sanctuary city nearly 40 years ago and has since been a popular destination for migrants, accepting large numbers in other periods throughout its history. However, the influx during the period 2022–2024 was unique because of the large amounts of resources local and federal governments dedicated to settling these individuals. Immigrant benefits varied over this period but peaked at $15,000 per family, which did not include services offered by local churches and private organizations. In this study, log-linear multiple regression was employed to determine the impact subsidies can have on the local rental real estate market. According to the study findings, rental real estate rates increased by up to 5.6% in response to subsidization of migrant housing. Additionally, neighborhoods that were adjacent to migrant shelters experienced the greatest additional increase of 29.96%. In addition to the rapidity with which rental real estate pricing can respond to subsidies and policy shifts, the study findings demonstrate the financial benefits that can accrue to real estate owners and managers who participate in the rental marketplace with subsidization. Amid growing demands for urban regeneration, metro station areas (MSAs) have emerged as critical spatial units for assessing renewal potential. However, their highly heterogeneous functional and spatial attributes pose challenges to precise classification and targeted strategy development. This study introduces the RFM (recency, frequency, and monetary) model—originally used in marketing—to the urban renewal domain. By mapping POI (point of interest) data, population density, and land price to the RFM dimensions, a three-dimensional evaluation framework is constructed. Using QGIS to process multi-source data for 118 MSAs in Beijing, we apply an improved five-quantile stratification method to classify station areas into eight renewal potential types. The results reveal a concentric spatial gradient: 24% of core-area MSAs are identified as Key-Value MSAs, while 23% of peripheral MSAs are categorized as General-Retention MSAs. Based on the classification, differentiated renewal strategies are proposed: high-potential MSAs should prioritize public space enhancement and walkability improvements, whereas low-potential MSAs should focus on upgrading basic transit infrastructure. The study provides a replicable method for classifying MSAs based on spatial and economic indicators, offering new theoretical insights and practical tools to guide evidence-based urban regeneration and station–city integration in high-density metropolitan areas such as Beijing. The integration of electric vehicles (EVs) into smart grids (SGs) is reshaping both energy systems and mobility infrastructures. This review presents a comprehensive and cross-disciplinary synthesis of current technologies, methodologies, and challenges associated with EV–SG interaction. Unlike prior reviews that address these aspects in isolation, this work uniquely connects three critical pillars: (i) the evolution of energy storage technologies, including lithium-ion, second-life, and hybrid systems; (ii) optimisation and predictive control techniques using artificial intelligence (AI) for real-time energy management and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) coordination; and (iii) cybersecurity risks and post-quantum solutions required to safeguard increasingly decentralised and data-intensive grid environments. The novelty of this review lies in its integrated perspective, highlighting how emerging innovations, such as federated AI models, blockchain-secured V2G transactions, digital twin simulations, and quantum-safe cryptography, are converging to overcome existing limitations in scalability, resilience, and interoperability. Furthermore, we identify underexplored research gaps, such as standardisation of bidirectional communication protocols, regulatory inertia in V2G market participation, and the lack of unified privacy-preserving data architectures. By mapping current advancements and outlining a strategic research roadmap, this article provides a forward-looking foundation for the development of secure, flexible, and grid-responsive EV ecosystems. The findings support policymakers, engineers, and researchers in advancing the technical and regulatory landscape necessary to scale EV–SG integration within sustainable smart cities. Full article

As a key component of new infrastructure, smart logistics is becoming an essential driver for reducing foreign trade costs and risks and promoting the sustainable development of foreign trade. Using panel data from 286 prefecture level and above cities from 2014 to 2023, this article attempts to refine the measurement of smart logistics level from provincial to municipal levels, construct a two-way fixed effect model and a mediation effect model, and deeply explore the inherent relationship between smart logistics, industrial structure upgrading, and sustainable development of foreign trade. The results reveal that: (1) smart logistics significantly promotes the sustainable development of foreign trade. (2) Rationalization and advancement of industrial structure play an intermediary role between the two. (3) Market integration has a positive moderating effect on the path of “smart logistics—industrial structure rationalization”, but the moderating effect is not significant in other paths. It has been confirmed that there is a “siphon effect” in the advantageous regions. (4) Heterogeneity analysis shows that the effect of smart logistics on foreign trade promotion is more significant in the central and inland regions. This study provides a theoretical basis and practical inspiration for optimizing regional smart logistics layout and deepening industrial structure adjustment. Full article

Efficient urban land use is a cornerstone of sustainable city development, yet the drivers of such efficiency are increasingly complex in an era of spatial transformation. As industrial specialization and collaboration deepen, cities are becoming interconnected through complex networks. These “invisible threads” are redefining the dynamics of land use and spatial efficiency. This study examines the influence of intercity industrial networks on urban land use efficiency by constructing urban networks from multi-regional input–output data and evaluating city performance using a super-SBM model. We employed Tobit regression and mediation analysis to identify the mechanisms. Results indicate that both the quantity and quality of urban network connections significantly enhance land use efficiency, with notable differences across city types. The positive effect of industrial network centrality is most pronounced in large cities. In growing cities, both the number and quality of industrial linkages promote efficiency, whereas in shrinking cities, connection quality is more critical than quantity. Mechanism analysis reveals that industrial networks improve land use efficiency primarily by expanding intermediate goods markets and fostering technological innovation. Full article

The scientific evaluation of the coordinated development level of the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration is crucial for promoting the localization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This study, based on the SDGs framework, utilizes data from 41 prefecture-level cities in the Yangtze River Delta from 2013 to 2023 to establish a five-dimensional evaluation index system, covering urban–rural integration (SDG 10), scientific and technological innovation (SDG 9), infrastructure (SDG 9.1), ecological environment (SDG 13/14/15), and public services (SDG 3/4/11). By applying the coupling coordination degree model, kernel density estimation, and the standard deviation ellipse method, the study systematically assesses the regional coordinated development level and its spatio-temporal evolution patterns. The findings reveal that from 2013 to 2023, the development indices of the five subsystems showed a fluctuating upward trend, with significant disparities in growth rate and stability. The overall regional coordination degree continuously improved, and differences diminished, with the coupling degree and coupling coordination degree exhibiting a “polarization followed by an overall leap” pattern. The coupling coordination degree evolved in three stages: “imbalance in mutual feedback among elements, strengthening of coordination mechanisms, and deepening of policy innovation”, with spatial differentiation and clustered development coexisting. Spatially, the distribution center shifted through three phases: “policy-driven”, “market-regulated”, and “technology-led”, forming an axial reconstruction from northwest to southeast, ultimately establishing a multi-center coordinated development system. Building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) is expected to play a relevant role in decarbonising our cities, both in new buildings and retrofit projects, making them more sustainable, resilient and pleasant. However, BIPV remains a niche market. To understand the reasons and help boost its development, this paper provides insights into BIPV through a holistic and systematic analysis that considers BIPV’s dual nature as both photovoltaic and building product. The methodology is based on the analyses of several BIPV technological innovation systems (TISs) developed in six countries, as well as extensive comparative assessments and investigations to identify key global features of BIPV. Social aspects, market status and forecast, perspectives from the photovoltaic and building sectors, and related regulations and standardisation are key aspects analysed to develop recommendations for policymakers. Outcome examples are low to moderate acceptance of BIPV among building owners, who give cost reasons for choosing building-added photovoltaics (BAPV) over BIPV, as well as a need for information, official guidance, skilled personnel, improved cross-sector collaboration, availability of BIPV products, proper digital tools and specific regulation to improve BIPV’s legitimacy in the construction sector. Essential is developing policies that encourage the adoption of BIPV, including standardisation, promotion and financing. Full article

Digital city planning increasingly relies on data-driven approaches to address complex urban sustainability challenges through innovative network analysis methodologies. This study introduces a comprehensive spatiotemporal network framework to examine digital innovation networks as fundamental infrastructure for urban sustainable development, focusing on the Yellow River Basin as a representative case study. Utilizing digital patent data as innovation indicators across 57 urban centers, we employ advanced network analysis techniques including Social Network Analysis (SNA) and the Quadratic Assignment Procedure (QAP) to investigate the spatiotemporal evolution patterns and underlying driving mechanisms of regional digital innovation networks. The methodology integrates big data analytics with urban planning applications to provide evidence-based insights for digital city planning strategies. Our empirical findings reveal three critical dimensions of urban sustainable development through digital innovation networks: First, the region demonstrated significant enhancement in digital innovation capacity from 2012 to 2022, with accelerated growth patterns post 2020, indicating robust urban resilience and adaptive capacity for sustainable transformation. Second, the spatial network configuration exhibited increasing interconnectivity characterized by strengthened urban–rural linkages and enhanced cross-regional innovation flows, forming a hierarchical centrality pattern where major metropolitan centers (Xi’an, Zhengzhou, Jinan, and Lanzhou) serve as innovation hubs driving coordinated regional development. Third, analysis of network formation mechanisms indicates that spatial proximity, market dynamics, and industrial foundations negatively correlate with network density, suggesting that regional heterogeneity in these characteristics promotes innovation diffusion and strengthens inter-urban connections, while technical human capital and governmental interventions show limited influence on network evolution. This research contributes to the digital city planning literature by demonstrating how data-driven network analysis can inform sustainable urban development strategies, providing valuable insights for policymakers and urban planners implementing AI technologies and big data applications in regional development planning. Sustainability has become a key focus in the hospitality industry, with travelers increasingly seeking accommodations with strong environmental commitments. As part of this trend, many hotels are adopting green marketing strategies to improve their brand image and appeal to eco-conscious consumers. However, the challenge lies in ensuring that these strategies are perceived as genuine rather than as “greenwashing,” which undermines their effectiveness and harms the brand’s credibility. This study examines the impact of green marketing strategies on the brand image of 5-star hotels in Lima, Peru. A survey of 206 hotel clients reveals that the implementation of green marketing positively influences the perceived benefits, corporate image, trust, and loyalty associated with these establishments. The results highlight that younger generations, particularly Millennials and Generation Z, are more likely to value sustainability initiatives, making them an important target for hotels seeking to enhance their brand image through eco-friendly practices. The findings suggest that effective communication of sustainable practices and transparency are essential to avoid greenwashing and build customer loyalty. This research contributes to the limited knowledge on green marketing in the Peruvian hotel sector and provides insights for both hotel managers and researchers on the importance of integrating genuine sustainability efforts into their marketing strategies. Green finance policy represents a critical market-oriented instrument that channels financial resources toward environmentally sustainable development. This study employs the difference-in-differences (DID) model to empirically analyze the panel data of 276 cities in China spanning 2011 to 2020, using China’s 2017 green finance policy as a quasi-natural experiment. The results demonstrate that after passing a series of robustness tests, green finance policy can effectively alleviate air pollution. In addition, the mechanism test shows that green finance policy can significantly reduce air pollution through the resource allocation effect and green innovation effect. According to heterogeneity analysis, the effects of policy are more noticeable in Western cities, resource-based cities, and cities with higher levels of financial development. These findings provide scientific support for the policy pathways through which green finance facilitates coordinated pollution reduction and high-quality development, offering valuable insights for developing countries in advancing sustainable urban governance. Foreign direct investment (FDI) plays a vital role in fostering sustainable economic development, particularly in emerging and post-conflict economies. Yet, the benefits of FDI inflows depend not only on the size of investment but also on how evenly it is distributed across regions. In the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), FDI inflows have grown considerably over the past two decades, remaining heavily concentrated, with 93% of total investment absorbed by the capital city, Erbil, and only 7% distributed across the remaining governorates. This study investigates the determinants of geographic imbalances in FDI inflows within the KRI. Drawing on a unique firm-level dataset from 2007 to 2021 and employing a negative binomial logit model, the results reveal that superior infrastructure, greater market accessibility, proximity to international borders, airport connectivity, and digital network penetration are significant drivers of FDI concentration. We suggest that such spatial inequality poses significant risks to inclusive and sustainable growth, threatening to entrench regional disparities and reduce resilience to economic and local political disruptions in the long term. To mitigate these issues, we recommend a regionally differentiated policy framework that includes targeted investment incentives tailored to local comparative advantages, strategic infrastructure upgrades in underdeveloped areas, strengthened investor protections, streamlined regulatory processes, and the establishment of investment promotion agencies (IPAs) to enhance investor engagement and aftercare. By diagnosing the causes of FDI concentration and offering actionable strategies, this study provides evidence-based insights for fostering balanced, inclusive, and sustainable economic development in the KRI and other post-conflict regions confronting similar challenges. Cultivating the best business environment ecosystem is important for advancing market-oriented reforms and achieving sustainable industrial transformation. How to quantify the business environment is also a relatively complex topic. Based on urban ecology theory, this study constructs a comprehensive evaluation framework for assessing urban business environment development. Using the entropy weight method and spatial autocorrelation analysis, we examine the time series and spatial evolution of the business environment in the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area from 2008 to 2021. Meanwhile, we further explore the main factors that influence the development level of the business environment. Finally, some suggestions are put forward to improve the business environment. The results show that (1) the development level of the business environment has gradually improved during the sample period, with stable growth from 2008 to 2015, followed by rapid development after 2015; (2) from different dimensions, there is an imbalance in the business environment development among cities within the Greater Bay Area, with core cities performing better than others; (3) from a spatial perspective, the business environment presents a “core-periphery” pattern, with higher levels clustered around the Pearl River Estuary, indicating strong spatial agglomeration. This research provides theoretical support and policy recommendations for the Three-Year Action Plan for Creating a World-Class Business Environment in the Greater Bay Area. Full article

The shift toward experience-oriented travel has positioned food as a central driver for attracting visitors to sustainable destinations, directly supporting United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG)11 (resilient cities) and SDG 12 (responsible consumption). While prior research has predominantly emphasised marketing outcomes, the role of bodily experiences in shaping gastronomic tourism has received less attention. This study explores how sensory elements (sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch) and non-sensory elements (including cultural meaning and service quality) jointly influence food-related travel experiences. Twenty-five self-identified food travellers were interviewed in a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) City of Gastronomy, and their narratives were analysed using a three-stage grounded theory approach in NVivo 12. The resulting model identifies four interrelated dimensions: (1) embodied experience, grounded in culinary memories and shared cultural narratives; (2) sensory stimulation arising from food and its surroundings; (3) situated embodiment, shaped by location, timing, and social interaction; and (4) environmental perception, encompassing food presentation, facility quality, cleanliness, and pricing fairness. These dimensions interact to enhance overall experience quality. By integrating an embodied perspective with a sustainability focus, this study advances tourism experience research and offers practical guidance for designing multisensory dining environments, fostering environmentally responsible visitor behaviour, and ensuring a balanced relationship between price and perceived value.
