Heatwaves are increasing in frequency and intensity owing to climate change, posing severe health risks to urban populations, particularly vulnerable groups. This study investigates public perceptions, adaptive behavior, and policy awareness regarding extreme heat in Gwangju Metropolitan City, South Korea, a heat-prone urban area. Using a mixed-methods approach, we analyzed primary survey data from 814 residents and secondary data from the 2020 Gwangju Citizen Heatwave Awareness Survey. Statistical analyses, including chi-squared and t-tests, examined differences across socioeconomic age groups. Results indicate that while general awareness of heatwave risks is high, low-income residents exhibit lower perceived severity, limited access to mechanical cooling, and greater reliance on passive avoidance behaviors. Awareness and use of municipal cooling shelters were low, with satisfaction hindered by concerns over accessibility, cleanliness, and operational hours. Television and emergency text alerts were the main information channels; however, trust and perceived usefulness were limited. Policy recommendations include spatially targeted shelter placement informed by vulnerability mapping, improved operational standards, diversified risk communication, and enhanced community engagement. This study underscores the importance of equity-driven adaptation strategies and provides practical insights for global municipalities facing similar climate-related heat risks. Full article

Timber construction is increasingly promoted in Chile as a route to low-carbon, energy-efficient housing, yet public acceptance remains decisive for its diffusion. This study reports the first large-scale perception survey of timber buildings in Greater Concepción (N = 200) and contrasts key results with an earlier identical survey in Valdivia. Concepción residents strongly recognise timber’s thermal comfort attributes and associate wood housing with lower winter heating demand, a perception markedly stronger than in Valdivia. Conversely, 73% of Concepción respondents believe timber homes burn easily, but a majority also accept that modern engineering can mitigate this risk, indicating scope for targeted technical communication. Environmental perceptions are more ambivalent: although respondents value wood’s renewable origin, 42% doubt that timber construction reduces climate change, and many equate it with deforestation, echoing controversies around Chile’s plantation model. Cluster analysis reveals a techno-optimist subgroup coupling enthusiasm for energy savings with confidence in fire-safety innovations, suggesting a strategic constituency for demonstration projects. By situating end-user attitudes within national decarbonisation goals, this paper argues that region-specific outreach—emphasising verified energy-efficiency gains, certified sustainable forestry and visible fire-safety performance—can convert passive approval into active demand and accelerate Chile’s transition to a net-zero housing stock. Agriculture plays a crucial role in discussions about environmental challenges because of its ecological footprint and high vulnerability to environmental shocks. To better understand the social and behavioral dynamics among food producers and their perceptions of climate change-related risks, this paper draws on forty-one in-depth, semi-structured interviews with farmers and ranchers in Colorado (USA). Leveraging the concept of social capital, the paper extends the concept analytically in a direction missed by previous research highlighting network structures, such as by focusing on its bonding, bridging, and linking characteristics. Instead, focus centers on the inclusiveness and diversity of values, beliefs, worldviews, and cultural orientations within those networks, arguing that these elements can be just as influential, if not more so in certain instances, than structural qualities. The concept of social capital heterogeneity is introduced to describe a network’s level of diversity and inclusivity. The findings do not question the importance of studying network structures when trying to understand how food producers respond to threats like climate change; an approach that remains useful for explaining social learning, technology adoption, and behavioral change. However, this method misses elements captured through a subjective, interpretivist perspective. With social capital heterogeneity, we can use social capital to explore why farmers and ranchers hold specific values and risk perceptions, peering deeper “within” networks, while tools like quantitative social network analysis software help map their structures from the “outside.” Additionally, social capital heterogeneity provides valuable insights into questions about “effective” agro-environmental governance. The paper concludes by discussing practical implications of the findings and reviewing the limitations of the research design. Full article

Agriculture is an integral part of human development and sustainability. The agricultural sector has seen critical and severe challenges in recent decades due to the impacts of climate change. Agriculture faces significant challenges, especially in developing countries and geographic regions that are characterized as arid or semi-arid. To ensure the sustainability of agriculture, farmers need to engage in adaptive strategies to tackle climate change and achieve environmentally sustainable farming. Libya is characterized as both a developing country and an arid-to-semi-arid geographic location. Hence, the country’s agricultural sector is critically challenged by climate change and an inadequate institutional infrastructure for sustainable agricultural development in the country. This study investigated the climate change adaptations and sustainable agricultural approaches of farmers in Libya, including the impact of the socio-economic dynamics of Libyan farmers on their climate change beliefs, awareness, risk perception, adaptive strategies, and maladaptive strategies. This study carried out a quantitative-style investigation on a sample size of 506 farmers across all regions of Libya. Paired t-tests, an ANOVA, and a correlation analysis were applied to the collected primary data. An analysis of the research results showed a significant correlation among all the research variables and varying degrees of relationships between the socio-economic factors and the research constructs. Fertility is considered a significant demographic concern, especially in relation to climate change. This study examines how awareness of climate change, measured by five subscales—climate-friendly behavior, knowledge, personal concern, attitude, and multiplicative action—affects fertility intentions, emphasizing the mediating role of threat perception. Data were collected through an online survey administered to a sample of 817 Palestinian citizens aged 18–49 residing in the West Bank. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was utilized for the data analysis. The results revealed that climate change awareness does not directly affect fertility intentions. However, an indirect effect of climate change awareness on fertility intentions was observed, mediated by threat perception as an intervening variable. Individuals exhibiting increased awareness of climate change and perceptions of future risks demonstrated a greater likelihood of reducing their fertility intentions compared to others. Policymakers in the Palestinian territories should prioritize enhancing public awareness regarding climate change and its associated short- and long-term threats. Therefore, incorporating climate education and associated risks into fertility health programs is essential. Full article

Extreme heat poses growing health risks in tropical regions, yet public perception of this threat remains understudied in the Caribbean. This study examines how residents in Puerto Rico perceived heat-related health risks and how these perceptions relate to vulnerability and protective behaviors during the extreme heat events of the summer of 2020. We conducted a cross-sectional telephone survey of 500 adults across metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas of Puerto Rico, using stratified probability sampling. The questionnaire assessed heat risk perception, sociodemographic characteristics, health status, prior heat exposure, and heat-related behaviors. While most participants expressed concern about climate change and high temperatures, fewer than half perceived heat as a high level of personal health risk. Higher levels of risk perception were significantly associated with being male, aged 50–64, unemployed, and in fair health, having multiple chronic conditions, and prior experience with heat-related symptoms. Those with symptoms were nearly five times more likely to report high levels of risk perception (OR = 4.94, 95% CI: 2.93–8.34). In contrast, older adults (65+), despite their higher level of vulnerability, reported lower levels of risk perception and fewer symptoms. Nighttime heat exposure was widespread and strongly associated with heat-related symptoms. Common coping strategies included the use of fans and air conditioning, though economic constraints and infrastructure instability limited access. The findings highlight the disparity between actual and perceived vulnerability, particularly among older adults. Public health strategies should focus on risk communication tailored to vulnerable groups and address barriers to heat adaptation. Strengthening heat resilience in Puerto Rico requires improved infrastructure, equitable access to cooling, and targeted outreach. Full article

Certain industries will bear a disproportionate share of the burden of climate change. Climate change risk perceptions can impact workers’ mental health and well-being; increased climate change risk perceptions are also associated with more favourable adaptive attitudes. It is, therefore, important to understand whether climate risk perceptions differ across workers between industries. We conducted an online survey of British Columbians (16+) in 2021 using social media advertisements. Participants rated how likely they believed their industry (Natural Resources, Science, Art and Recreation, Education/Law/Government, Health, Management/Business, Manufacturing, Sales, Trades) would be affected by climate change (on a scale from “Very Unlikely” to “Very Likely”). Ordinal logistic regression examined the association between occupational category and perceived industry vulnerability, adjusting for socio-demographic factors. Among 877 participants, 66.1% of Natural Resources workers perceived it was very/somewhat likely that climate change would impact their industry; only those in Science (78.3%) and Art and Recreation (71.4%) occupations had higher percentages. In the adjusted model, compared to Natural Resources workers, respondents in other occupations, including those in Art and Recreation, Education/Law/Government, Management/Business, Manufacturing, Sales, and Trades, perceived significantly lower risk of climate change-related industry impacts. Industry-specific interventions are needed to increase awareness of and readiness for climate adaptation. Policymakers and industry leaders should prioritize sectoral differences when designing interventions to support climate resilience in the workforce. Full article

This study examines how beliefs about the causes of climate change relate to emotions, perceptions of its effects, and willingness to engage in collective action among residents of the Valparaíso Region in Chile, a territory particularly vulnerable to this phenomenon. A survey was conducted with 809 individuals using stratified probabilistic sampling. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences among those who attribute climate change to human, mixed, or natural causes. The results show that individuals who believe in the anthropogenic origin of climate change report higher levels of negative emotions, anxiety, perceived impacts, and willingness to participate in both direct and institutional collective actions. Moreover, these individuals perceive greater negative effects of climate change on their surroundings and daily lives. In contrast, those who attribute the phenomenon to natural causes show a lower predisposition to act and a lower risk perception. The study concludes that causal attribution of climate change significantly influences people’s emotional and behavioral responses, highlighting the importance of strengthening climate education and communication based on scientific evidence as key tools for fostering civic engagement in the face of the environmental crisis. The findings contribute to sustainability by strengthening environmental education, participatory governance, and collective action in vulnerable contexts. Full article

Urban pluvial flooding (UPF) is an increasingly critical issue due to rapid urbanization and intensified precipitation driven by climate change that yet remains understudied in the Caribbean. This study analyzes the effects of UPF resulting from the transformation of a natural karstic landscape into an urbanized area considering a sub-watershed in Chetumal, Southern Mexican Caribbean, as a case study. Hydrographic numerical modeling was conducted using the IBER 2.5.1 software and the SCS-CN method to estimate surface runoff for a critical UPF event across three stages: (i) 1928—natural condition; (ii) 1998—semi-urbanized (78% coverage); and (iii) 2015—urbanized (88% coverage). Urbanization led to the orthogonalization of the drainage network, an increase in the sub-watershed area (20%) and mainstream length (33%), flow velocities rising 10–100 times, a 52% reduction in surface roughness, and a 32% decrease in the potential maximum soil retention before runoff occurs. In urbanized scenarios, 53.5% of flooded areas exceeded 0.5 m in depth, compared to 16.8% in non-urbanized conditions. Community-based knowledge supported flood extent estimates with 44.5% of respondents reporting floodwater levels exceeding 0.50 m, primarily in streets. Only 43.1% recalled past flood levels, indicating a loss of societal memory, although risk perception remained high among directly affected residents. The reported UPF effects perceived in the area mainly related to housing damage (30.2%), mobility disruption (25.5%), or health issues (12.9%). Although UPF events are frequent, insufficient drainage infrastructure, altered runoff patterns, and limited access to public shelters and communication increased vulnerability. Full article

Against the backdrop of evolving global climate patterns, the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events have increased significantly, posing unprecedented threats to agricultural production. This change has particularly profound impacts on agricultural systems in developing countries, making the enhancement of farmers’ capacity to withstand extreme weather events a crucial component for achieving sustainable agricultural development. As an essential safeguard for agricultural production, agricultural insurance plays an indispensable role in risk management. However, a pronounced gap persists between policy aspirations and actual adoption rates among farmers in developing economies. This study employs the integrated theory of planned behavior (TPB) and protection motivation theory (PMT) to construct an analytical framework incorporating psychological, socio-cultural, and risk-perception factors. Using Jiangsu Province—a representative high-risk agricultural region in China—as a case study, we administered 608 structured questionnaires to farmers. Structural equation modeling was applied to identify determinants influencing insurance adoption decisions. The findings reveal that farmers’ agricultural insurance purchase decisions are influenced by multiple factors. At the individual level, risk perception promotes purchase intention by activating protection motivation, while cost–benefit assessment enables farmers to make rational evaluations. At the social level, subjective norms can significantly enhance farmers’ purchase intention. Further analysis indicates that perceived severity indirectly enhances purchase intention by positively influencing attitude, while response costs negatively affect purchase intention by weakening perceived behavior control. Although challenges such as cognitive gaps and product mismatch exist in the intention-behavior transition, institutional trust can effectively mitigate these issues. It not only strengthens the positive impact of psychological factors on purchase intention, but also significantly facilitates the transformation of purchase intention into actual behavior. To promote targeted policy interventions for agricultural insurance, we propose corresponding policy recommendations from the perspective of public intervention based on the research findings. A clear understanding of drought perceptions and adaptation behaviors adopted by farmers is an important way to cope with climate change and achieve sustainable agricultural development. Karst is a type of landscape where the dissolving of the bedrock has created sinkholes, sinking streams, caves, springs, and other characteristic features. The study took the Huajiang karst dry-hot river valley area located in the southwestern part of Guizhou as the study area and used questionnaire survey method, the index of perception and the diversity index of adaptation strategy to explore the risk perception, adaptation perception and adaptation behavior of farmers to non-climatic droughts in the subtropical karst dry-hot valleys. A total of 530 questionnaires were distributed and 520 were returned. The results show that (1) the farmers’ risk perception of drought is stronger than adaptation perception, which shows that although farmers are well aware of the possible risks posed by drought, their subjective initiative and motivation to adapt to drought are weaker; (2) in the face of drought, farmers prioritize selected non-farm measures for adaptation, followed by crop management and finally water resource management; and (3) compared to farmers in arid and semi-arid regions, those in karst hot-dry river valleys exhibit distinct adaptive behaviors in response to drought, particularly in water resource management. Climate change poses significant risks to public health, particularly for vulnerable populations such as older adults. In Mexico, where extreme weather events are becoming more frequent, understanding how this demographic perceives climate-related health risks is crucial for designing effective adaptation strategies. Limited research exists on this topic; this pilot study aims to assess the perceptions of climate related health risks among older adults from a multidisciplinary team, with data collected at the Centro Médico Nacional “La Raza” in Mexico City. Using a cross-sectional, descriptive, and observational survey design, data were collected from hospitalized and outpatient individuals using a validated instrument that measures perceived environmental and emotional impacts of climate change. Key findings reveal varying levels of awareness and emotional responses to environmental changes, such as heatwaves, droughts, and ecosystem degradation. Participants’ sociodemographic characteristics and existing health conditions are also documented to explore their association with climate risk perceptions. The study highlights the need for tailored health communication strategies and adaptive policies that address the specific vulnerabilities and perceptions of older adults. Results will contribute to building climate-resilient health interventions and support the development of inclusive public health strategies amid global climate change in the country. Full article

Background/Objective: Nurses play a critical role in addressing climate change. They are instrumental in both mitigation and adaptation to its effects. Through care provision, education, management, policy development, and research, nurses can undertake a variety of specific actions in response to climate change. However, their perceptions of this challenge remain under-researched. This study aims to investigate Spanish nurses’ knowledge of climate change and its impact on health. Methods: This is a qualitative descriptive study based on the constructivist paradigm. Purposive and snowball sampling strategies were used to recruit nurses from emergency services, geriatrics, cardiology, respiratory medicine and primary care in nine different regions of Spain. Semi-structured online interviews were conducted. Data analysis was carried out by three researchers via a three-stage inductive thematic analysis approach. Results: The sample consisted of 31 nurses, predominantly women (77.42%), with a mean age of 41 years. Seventy percent of the participants had less than 15 years of experience in the service. Four categories were identified: (i) general knowledge of climate change; (ii) knowledge of climate change and health; (iii) knowledge of actions to address climate change; and (iv) knowledge development. Overall, the nurses demonstrated awareness of the risks posed by climate change as well as actions to respond. However, barriers such as a lack of formal training and eco-anxiety affect their knowledge acquisition. Conclusions: Nurses play an important role in the response to climate change. However, more comprehensive and higher-quality educational programmes, provided by academic institutions, workplaces, and professional associations, are needed. Risk Communication in Coastal Cities: The Case of Naples, Italy

Coastal cities are increasingly exposed to the risks posed by climate change, including rising sea levels, intensified storms, and coastal erosion. In this context, risk communication plays a crucial role, as it can shape public perception, promote preparedness, and influence both emergency responses and long-term mitigation strategies. This study investigated how disaster-related risks are framed in the media, focusing on the case of Naples, Italy, following a severe coastal storm surge that struck the city’s waterfront on December 2020. Using Dynamic Latent Dirichlet Allocation (DLDA), the research analyzed 297 newspaper articles published between 2020 and 2024 to examine the evolution of media narratives over time. The findings reveal four dominant patterns: (1) a prevailing economic discourse centered on financial damages and compensations, with limited references to resilience planning; (2) a temporal framing that presents the storm as a sudden, exceptional event, disconnected from historical precedents or future climate projections; (3) a lack of emphasis on the social experiences and vulnerabilities of local residents; and (4) minimal discussion of tourists’ exposure to risk, despite their presence in high-impact areas. These results highlight key limitations of media-driven risk communication and underscore the need for more inclusive, forward-looking narratives to support urban resilience and climate adaptation in coastal cities. This research offers valuable insights for urban planners, policymakers, journalists, and disaster risk reduction professionals, helping them to better align communication strategies with long-term adaptation goals and the needs of diverse urban populations. Background: This study aimed to evaluate risk perception about climate change and the sustainable behaviors adopted by adults. Methods: An anonymous questionnaire was administered between February and April 2024 among parents of adolescents in southern Italy. Results: A total of 765 parents agreed to participate in the survey, and the average respondents’ age was 47.3 years (28–78). Overall, 67.6% of respondents were extremely concerned that heat waves will negatively affect future generations. This concern was higher among respondents aged 41–50 years and >50 years, males, those who did not need additional information about climate change, and those who had received information about climate change. Regarding climate change concerns, 25.9% and 52.1% of participants were very or extremely concerned about climate change, respectively. Males, those who had one child, respondents aged 41–50 years and >50 years, and those who did not need additional information about climate change were significantly more likely to have concerns about climate change. Moreover, 34.5% of respondents engaged in sustainable behaviors. Finally, those who believed that climate change will negatively affect future generations and those who were extremely concerned that heat waves will negatively affect future generations were significantly more likely to engage in behaviors that mitigate the impact of climate change than those who were not concerned.
