Tuberculosis (TB) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) remain global public health challenges, yet the mechanisms underlying their comorbidity remain poorly understood. COPD is associated with an increased risk of active TB, but the cellular and molecular basis of this association remains unclear. A growing body of evidence suggests that TB is not limited to an intramacrophage infection but is accompanied by a disruption of the local immune balance in lung tissue. This review analyzes the early interface of host–Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) interaction—from pattern recognition signaling pathways and metabolic reprogramming of macrophages to epithelial barrier responses and the delayed αβ T cell response. This review evaluates γδ T cells, particularly phosphoantigen (pAg)-reactive Vγ9Vδ2 cells, as a candidate early integrative component of the host response, positioned between macrophage infection, epithelial stress, mycobacterial antigens, and bacille Calmette–Guérin (BCG)-induced trained immunity. Available evidence suggests that COPD-associated immune alterations may impair mucociliary clearance, antimicrobial peptide production, phagocytosis, and innate T cell responses while favoring cytotoxic reactions, the IL-17A–G-CSF–neutrophil axis, and protease-mediated tissue damage; however, direct mechanistic evidence in patients with TB–COPD remains limited. It is important to note the differences in data obtained from studies in humans, primates, mice, and in vitro: the Vγ9Vδ2 system has no direct analog in laboratory mice, which represents a key limitation for preclinical studies. A key unresolved question remains the nature and functional consequences of γδ T cell changes in patients with coexisting COPD and TB infection. The answer to this question could inform new strategies for the prevention and treatment of TB in patients with COPD, including BCG revaccination, pAg-mediated immunomodulation, and the development of biomarkers to distinguish between protective and harmful early immune responses. The traditional Chinese ecological aesthetics takes ‘the Unity of Heaven and Humanity’ [天人合一] as its philosophical core and constructs a cosmological landscape of coexistence and prosperity between humans and nature. Given the challenges of the global ecological crisis, this research draws on the ecological aesthetic wisdom of ‘the Unity of Heaven and Humanity’ to systematically explore its theoretical support and practical value for building a Beautiful China. By employing a mixed-method approach that integrates textual analysis, policy review, and multi-case comparative study, this research finds that in the process of building a Beautiful China, the traditional ecological aesthetic wisdom of ‘the Unity of Heaven and Humanity’ has achieved creative transformation and innovative development through the spatial creation of ‘Poetic Dwelling’, the green economy characterized by ‘Suitable for Employment’ and the ecological empowerment for the principle of ‘Suitable for Nurturing Life and Tourism’. This has paved a distinctive path for green development that integrates cultural subjectivity, ecological principles, and modern governance technologies. The discussion further emphasizes that intelligent ecological governance, leveraging technologies such as artificial intelligence and big data, provides a key technological pathway for the contemporary transformation of ‘the Unity of Heaven and Humanity’ philosophy. This study provides a unique ecological and cultural foundation for building a Beautiful China and for global ecological protection. Full article

This study developed an eco-epidemiological model incorporating constant prey refuge, predator disease transmission, and anthropogenic harvesting to explore the coupled dynamical behaviors of ecological populations under natural infection and human interference. All feasible equilibrium points of the proposed system were solved, and the local stability of the boundary equilibria and threshold conditions for transcritical bifurcations were systematically analyzed. The global asymptotic stability of the positive coexistence equilibrium was verified by constructing the appropriate Lyapunov functions. Furthermore, a parameter sensitivity analysis was performed to identify the dominant parameters governing population persistence and system stability. To balance ecological sustainability and economic benefits, an optimal harvesting control problem was investigated, and time-dependent optimal harvesting efforts were obtained by applying optimal control theory. Numerical simulations demonstrated that the optimal harvesting strategy can dynamically adjust the harvesting intensity to maximize long-term discounted economic profit while maintaining stable population coexistence. The theoretical and numerical results provide reliable theoretical guidance for the sustainable exploitation and ecological management of infected predator–prey ecosystems. Full article

Transhumanism subsumes system developments extending human capabilities, whereas posthumanism includes developments beyond actors and processes in human life. It affects agency and identity development, bringing into play ‘more-than-human-centered design’ of technology-based artefacts. Transhumanism uses science and technology to expand human capabilities, in particular intellect and health. Posthumanism addresses the co-existence of human and artificial actors while decentering human actors. It examines how technology has already and is still influencing agency and identity without necessarily requiring physical extensions. Both approaches affect (future) system development. Socio-technical system design can contribute to the respective discourse. Key issues relevant for transhumanist concerns are the dynamics of socio-technical system design, the functional, communication, and interaction capabilities of networked system elements (including human support), and learning infrastructures. Considering this structure and these capabilities lays the ground for approaching posthuman system design issues in terms of representing networked entities and their behavior albeit their different nature of actors. Implementation of a respective framework requires enabling infrastructures for the (dynamic) reconfiguration of heterogeneous networked components. The entry finally discusses how such a design framework could inform future research at the intersection of design theory, human–technology integration, and critical futures studies. Full article

Background: Coarctation of the aorta (CoA) is a congenital narrowing of the aortic isthmus near the ductus arteriosus or ligamentum arteriosum. Despite successful anatomical repair, patients remain at risk of recoarctation, arterial hypertension, and diffuse aortopathy, suggesting intrinsic vessel-wall abnormalities beyond localized obstruction. The developmental and molecular basis of these persistent vascular features remains incompletely understood. Methods: Human aortic tissue samples were obtained from 8 male infants with CoA and 6 age- and sex-matched controls aged <1 year. Total RNA was isolated, and gene expression profiling was performed using whole human genome oligo microarrays (Agilent). Differentially expressed transcripts were subjected to pathway, network, and upstream regulator analyses using Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA, Qiagen). Selected candidate genes were evaluated by RT-qPCR in independent verification sets. Results: Transcriptomic profiling identified 402 analysis-ready transcripts distinguishing CoA from control tissue. Exploratory pathway analyses suggested extracellular matrix remodeling characterized by collagen turnover, integrin-mediated cell–matrix interactions, wound-healing signaling, and fibrosis-associated programs. In addition, enrichment analyses identified developmental annotations involving retinoic acid (RA)/RAR/RXR signaling, HOX-associated developmental programs, and a shared HOX/MEIS-associated signature. Network and upstream regulator analyses further suggested associations with cytoskeletal, muscle-associated, and epigenetic regulatory pathways, including KAT6A, KAT6B, retinoic acid/RAR/RXR signaling, DNMT3B, KMT2A, and ARID1A. RT-qPCR independently confirmed increased expression of EDN1, AGTR2, IRS4, and TFAP2B.Conclusions: Infantile CoA tissue exhibited molecular signatures consistent with vessel-wall remodeling accompanied by developmental, vascular signaling, and smooth muscle/cytoskeletal regulatory programs. These findings support the hypothesis that developmental patterning signals and postnatal extracellular matrix remodeling coexist within CoA tissue and may contribute to persistent vascular abnormalities beyond anatomical repair. Given the exploratory nature of the study, these observations should be considered hypothesis-generating and require validation in independent cohorts. Full article

Glycine soja, the ancestor of cultivated soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.], is an important genetic resource for soybean improvement and a National Grade II Key Protected Wild Annual Plant in China. Understanding its intra- and interspecific interactions in natural communities is critical for effective conservation, yet these dynamics remain poorly characterized in field settings. This study aims to characterize these interactions within herbaceous communities, providing insights to optimize the management of G. soja populations and conservation reserves. We surveyed twenty natural G. soja communities and revealed the following: (1) G. soja exhibited stronger intraspecific than interspecific competition. Spatial patterning among morphotypes and their proportional displacement provided direct evidence of intraspecific interactions within G. soja populations. (2) The annual associated plant group exhibited coexistence mechanisms similar to G. soja, characterized by stronger intragroup competition relative to the perennial group, which conversely displayed stronger intergroup competition. (3) A significant negative correlation existed between perennials and annuals. Perennials posed a greater threat to G. soja than annuals via distinct threat mechanisms: while annuals suppressed G. soja primarily through proportional dominance in species number, perennials reduced G. soja density by leveraging G. soja’s tendency toward stronger intraspecific competition. (4) G. soja exhibited intraspecific niche differentiation among morphotypes defined by functional traits (leaf shape, leaf size, and plant height), where morphological similarity correlated with niche overlap. Extreme morphotypes followed a bimodal pattern, with intermediate forms acting as ecological buffers, thereby enhancing adaptation to heterogeneous environments. This study yields important implications for effective in situ conservation, requiring the mediation of the trade-off between intra- and interspecific competition. Optimal strategies should either maintain moderately open communities accessible to humans and grazing animals, thereby allowing residual associated plants to mitigate excessive intraspecific competition in G. soja while reducing intense interspecific competition, or employ artificial interventions in closed nature reserves to prevent excessive intra- and interspecific competitive exclusion of G. soja. Ancient human beings started “external entropy production” in a late stage of evolution, in addition to the internal entropy production by which energy was dissipated within the body of life, as previously described consistently with the birth of life by maximum entropy production principle. In this paper, the mechanism for development of external entropy production, which is strongly related with the use of tools and controlling fire, is theoretically investigated. Archaeological data show that the brain size of ancient human beings started to rapidly increase around 2.5 million years ago when the usage of tools and control of fire started. It may be natural to assume that the rapid growth of brain size is related to the growth of awareness that helped cooperation with the other human beings for control of fire. Coupled equations for the growth rate of the brain, including awareness, and for the growth rate of the size of the interacting human beings are analyzed. External entropy production per human being, which is directly related to the group size of cooperating human beings, is estimated to increase on a timescale of ∼20 million years from the beginning after the critical time. This evolution created the coexistence of the internal entropy production of traditional multi-cellular life and the new external entropy production of multi-body life. A psychological problem due to the coexistence of two kinds of entropy production mechanisms in human beings and the concept of technologies based on the present thermodynamic evolution theory are discussed. It is suggested that the evolutionary understanding of the origin of global warming based on external entropy production may be important to create an useful countermeasure. Full article

Biodiversity, as the foundation of life on Earth, sustains the balance of ecosystems and supports human sustainable development. However, the current accelerated decline in biodiversity poses ecological threats that require urgent attention. This research based on the perspective of ethnic ecological wisdom, explores the customary practices of biological conservation among the Miao ethnic group in Southwest China, the Tao ethnic group on Orchid Island (Lanyu), Taiwan, and the Maasai ethnic group on the East African Plateau. By conducting in-depth case studies, combined with literature review and data validation, it investigates their practical value and implementation pathways in biodiversity conservation. By analyzing the ecological conservation wisdom models of the Miao, Tao and Maasai ethnic groups, it is found that the core species populations in each region have shown a positive growth trend since the gradual integration of traditional ethnic customary laws with modern ecological protection systems and practices. Drawing on the extensive experience accumulated in integrating customary law into ecological governance across the three cases, this study proposes a three-dimensional optimization pathway: at the policy level, construct a mechanism integrating customary law and diversified ecological compensation; at the community level, implement a model featuring benefit sharing, patrol mediation and digital management; and at the cultural level, strengthen the development and dissemination of ethnic ecological conservation wisdom through multidisciplinary talent training and IP-based communication of exemplary customary law outcomes. We aspire to slow the rate of global biodiversity loss and achieve a bright future of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. Full article

Lymphoplasmacytic gastritis (LPG) is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases affecting cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) under human care, yet its underlying cause remains unresolved. Gastric inflammation occurs in the majority of adult captive cheetahs but is uncommon in free-ranging populations, suggesting that management-related factors contribute to disease pathogenesis. This review proposes that LPG represents a bile acid-driven gastroenteropathy arising from disruption of the natural feeding ecology of the cheetah. In free-ranging systems, cheetahs consume large episodic meals separated by prolonged fasting intervals and ingest whole-prey containing substantial connective tissue and collagen. In captivity, feeding patterns are typically characterized by smaller, more frequent meals and diets dominated by lean skeletal muscle with reduced structural complexity. I hypothesize that this mismatch alters gastric emptying kinetics, disrupts coordinated pancreatic and biliary secretion, and destabilizes fat digestion. Inefficient lipolysis may impair micelle formation and promote bile acid mislocalization within the gastrointestinal tract, increasing mucosal exposure to hydrophobic bile acids capable of inducing chemical epithelial injury. Within this framework, lymphoplasmacytic gastritis is interpreted as a secondary inflammatory reaction to chronic bile acid-mediated mucosal stress rather than a primary immune-mediated disorder. The model also provides a mechanistic explanation for the frequent coexistence of gastritis with fat and protein maldigestion in captive cheetahs. Differential responses to antimicrobial therapy, glucocorticoids, sulfasalazine, pancreatic enzyme supplementation, and bile acid-modifying agents are broadly consistent with this proposed mechanism. Recognition of LPG as a physiologically driven gastroenteropathy has important implications for management, emphasizing restoration of feast–fast feeding patterns, inclusion of collagen-rich carcass components, and targeted modulation of bile acid composition and signaling. The Sanjiangyuan Region is among China’s most critical ecological function zones and serves as an important habitat for rare wildlife species such as brown bears and snow leopards. Driven by factors including climate change and intensified human activities, human–wildlife conflicts have become increasingly frequent on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau, threatening the living space of both herders and wildlife. This study centers on the Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Qinghai Province, integrating multi-source remote sensing data with field survey data, and employs the Maximum Entropy Model (MaxEnt) MaxEnt model and the BIOMOD2 framework to simulate high-risk areas for brown bear incidents. Results indicate that the BIOMOD2 ensemble model (EMca) achieved the highest predictive accuracy, with the Random Forest (RF) model demonstrating strong robustness among individual models. Digital Elevation Model (DEM), Soil Surface Moisture (SSM), Fractional Vegetation Cover (FVC), and Human Footprint (HFP) were identified as the primary factors influencing the spatial distribution of brown bear incidents. High-risk areas exhibited significant clustering, mainly concentrated in the southern and southeastern regions of Qumalai, Nangchen, and Chindu; the eastern part of Zadoi County; and the central and southern parts of Yushu City, particularly within the elevation range of 4304–4544 m, where human activity intensity is relatively low. The core high-risk zone is located along the Tongtian River in southern Qumalai County, demonstrating strong spatial connectivity. By investigating the spatial distribution patterns and driving mechanisms of brown bear incidents in Yushu Prefecture, this study offers some references for government agencies to formulate strategies that promote harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. The accelerating pace of global urbanisation is reshaping planning agendas toward integrating urban nature, yet dominant approaches continue to rely on designed or controlled interventions to produce engineered approximations of spontaneity. This study presents Rome as a striking example of spontaneous urban nature, where wild flora has reclaimed ruins, walls, and neglected spaces for centuries without planned intervention. By “wild” or spontaneous vegetation, this paper refers to unmanaged, self-seeding flora that establishes itself without deliberate planting, irrigation, or maintenance, colonising ruins, walls, abandoned lots, and urban margins through autonomous ecological processes. The paper adopts a critical narrative synthesis methodology, integrating historical–cultural evidence, contemporary ecological data drawn from peer-reviewed biodiversity surveys within Rome’s urban boundary, and a spatial analysis of georeferenced historical cartographic sources to build an interpretive framework for what is here called passive coexistence. The key findings demonstrate that Rome’s sub-Mediterranean climate and centuries of aesthetic conditioning through visual arts, literature, and film have together produced a tacit social acceptance of spontaneous vegetation, effectively substituting for the deliberate education campaigns and designed interventions required in comparable cities. The study proposes an alternative narrative of spontaneous urban nature, guided by ecological monitoring and grounded in heritage planning frameworks. Despite context-specific limits, Rome’s passive coexistence paradigm offers a provocation and existing proof for more-than-human cities that seek resilience without the resource burden of engineered green infrastructure. Mohandas K. Gandhi (popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi) has primarily been recognized for his work in developing the theory and practice of nonviolence (ahimsa) for the purpose of building a culture of sustainable peace. Although Gandhi’s writings do not explicitly engage such categories as negative and positive peace, peace and international relations, or pacifism and nonviolence, scholars in peace studies have nonetheless assessed his contributions to the evolution of the field. This article advances the study of peace by emphasizing the dynamic nature of nonviolence (ahimsa), which is inextricably connected to Gandhi’s vision of sarvodaya (uplift of all). It further argues that his approach to peacebuilding, grounded in the upholding of pluralism across civic life, offers a conceptual framework for disrupting hegemonic monolithic systems. Gandhi lived in a time when the concept of pluralism had not gained currency; however, his vision, rooted in the values of diversity and tolerance, can appropriately be understood under the now widely accepted concept of pluralism. Gandhi thus uniquely connected nonviolence, peace, pluralism, and sarvodaya. For him, peaceful co-existence mandates attention to diversity—an approach that can enrich contemporary conversations in a divided political, social, and religious landscape. As a political leader and social reformer, he promoted indigenous languages, diverse village industries, local economies, and multi-faith religious education. In his later life, he also advocated for inter-caste and interreligious marriages in order to mitigate communal tensions. Such attention to diversity offers a promising path toward realizing the goal of sustainable peace and sarvodaya in a contemporary landscape increasingly prone to monolithic systems. Sarvodaya inherently requires a commitment to pluralistic, dialogical, dialectical, and nonviolent engagement in all spheres of life. By emphasizing shared humanity and committing to diversity, Gandhi offers a social philosophy of respect for all life as well as uplift of all trades, languages, and belief systems grounded in the vision of welfare of all. His practical methods of engaging diverse actors, along with his radical efforts to disrupt autocratic, authoritative, and centralized systems, affirm that the objectives of sarvodaya and sustainable peace can be realized only through a radical pluralism. The transition to autonomous driving is creating mixed traffic environments in which human-driven vehicles, partially automated vehicles, and autonomous vehicles must continuously interact, adapt, and respond to one another. This paper presents a comprehensive review of driver behavior in mixed traffic with autonomous vehicles, with emphasis on the sociotechnical nature of human–machine coexistence. The review synthesizes recent evidence on behavioral adaptation in car-following and tactical decision-making, trust calibration, situational awareness, takeover performance, internal and external human–machine interface design, surrogate safety metrics, vehicle-to-vehicle communication, operational design domains, and data-driven scenario generation. The literature shows that drivers do not respond to autonomous vehicles uniformly. Instead, behavior varies by driving style, perceived predictability of the automated vehicle, interface transparency, and traffic context. The review also emphasizes that these interaction patterns are context-dependent and may differ substantially across regions, particularly in dense mixed traffic environments. While some adaptations can improve stability and safety, others can encourage opportunistic maneuvers, overtrust, confusion, or degraded takeover quality. The review also highlights that crash data alone are insufficient to assess safety in mixed traffic, and that near-miss analysis, surrogate conflict metrics, and scenario-based evaluation are essential for understanding safety-critical interactions. Across the literature, a central inference emerges: adaptation to autonomous vehicles is real, but it is not automatically stabilizing. Safe deployment therefore depends not only on technical vehicle performance but also on behavioral legibility, transparent communication, calibrated trust, and robust evaluation under diverse real-world conditions. The paper concludes by identifying major research gaps, including the lack of longitudinal studies, incomplete standardization of surrogate metrics, limited understanding of vehicle conspicuity effects, and the need for integrated frameworks that jointly assess driver behavior, system design, and scenario-based safety. A systematic assessment of the human settlement suitability (HSS) and its structural resilience in metropolitan areas, from a spatial network perspective, is essential for understanding the spatial organization and evolutionary mechanisms of regional human settlement systems. It also supports the high-quality development of metropolitan areas. This study considers the Shenyang Metropolitan Area as the research object and constructs a comprehensive evaluation model of HSS from two dimensions: natural environmental suitability (NES) and human environmental suitability (HES). This study systematically analyzes the spatial distribution pattern of HSS, characteristics of its spatial association network, and its structural resilience, by integrating a modified gravity model, social network analysis (SNA), and structural resilience measurement methods. The results indicate that NES exhibits a high-west to low-east gradient, with high-value areas primarily located in peripheral regions with better ecological conditions. HES reveals a pronounced core–periphery structure, with high suitability concentrated in core cities and their adjacent suburban areas. Under the combined influence of NES and HES, the HSS forms a layered differentiation pattern dominated by core cities. The spatial association network of HSS has an overall low density and displays the coexistence of a core–periphery structure and proximity dependence, in which the HES network demonstrates strong cross-node transmission capacity, while the NES network is significantly constrained by geographical proximity. The structural resilience of the network is characterized by a moderate hierarchy, predominantly homophilic matching, limited transmission efficiency, and pronounced spatial differentiation in aggregation, indicating an overall pattern of highly connected cores with low aggregation and moderately or weakly connected nodes with high aggregation. The findings provide a scientific basis for optimizing the human settlements and enhancing regional resilience governance in metropolitan areas, while offering a novel analytical perspective for research on human settlement systems. With the advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the rise of new forms of productive forces, the ways humans interact with space, objects, and information are being profoundly reshaped, bringing unprecedented possibilities for upgrading interactive spaces—human settlements that integrate physical and digital environments. Against this background, using the literature on interactive space research from the Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection between 1990 and 2025 as the data source, this study employs CiteSpace software to generate scientific knowledge maps, analyzing the historic development, hotspots, and trends in the research of interactive space, providing both theoretical and data support. In terms of results, a total of 458 papers were collected, demonstrating a consistent year-on-year increase. The research spans multiple fields, including computer science, architecture, ecology, physics, design, and behavioristics. Specifically, results indicate that research hotspots in interactive spaces include collaborative governance, social coexistence, and sustainable renewal, all of which are highly relevant to activating human settlements. The vitality of interactive spaces can be constructed across multiple dimensions, (for instance, enhancement based on ecology, environment, culture, and other factors of the space). However, research on interactive spaces still suffers from a lack of interdisciplinary collaboration and multi-domain integration; therefore, it is essential to strengthen cooperation among relevant fields. Current research lacks interdisciplinary integration and dynamic response mechanisms. Based on these findings, this study, through visual analysis, reveals the research hotspots and evolutionary trajectory of interactive spaces and proposes a “technology–humanism–governance” trinity framework. This system should be based on technology as the means, humanism as the guiding principle, and effective governance as the goal. It aims to explore how to leverage the service-oriented and convenient nature of technology in interactive spaces to deepen human-centric design and thereby drive the optimization of systems. Based on these findings, future research on interactive spaces should shift its design philosophy to be more human-centric, establish a multidisciplinary research system, utilize local empirical cases, and develop scalable, applicable theories to construct harmonious, open spaces, enhance human–environment relationships, and provide other countries undergoing urbanization with practical solutions.
