Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) demand authentication mechanisms that are both secure and privacy-preserving, particularly in light of emerging quantum-era threats. In this work, we propose a lattice-based identity authentication protocol that leverages pseudo-IDs to safeguard user privacy, while allowing the Trusted Authority (TA) to trace misbehaving vehicles when necessary. Compared with existing approaches, the proposed scheme strengthens accountability, improves scalability, and offers resistance against quantum attacks. A comprehensive complexity analysis is presented, addressing computational, communication, and storage overhead. Analysis results under practical parameter settings demonstrate that the protocol delivers robust security with manageable overhead, maintaining authentication latency within the real-time requirements of VANET applications. This article explores how Afro-Colombian rural communities in the Caribbean region reclaim their territorial rights through the social construction of habitat. Drawing on four years of participatory action research with the Ma-Majarí Community Council in El Níspero, Montes de María, the study analyzes how traditional housing practices—rooted in ancestral knowledge, oral traditions, and collective memory—function as tools of cultural affirmation, political resistance, and re-peasantization in a post-conflict context. The research highlights the strategic role of Life Plans (Planes de Vida) as instruments of self-governance and territorial justice, challenging extractive development models and institutional neglect. Through visual ethnography, architectural surveys, and community-led housing initiatives, the study reveals how Afro-rural architecture embodies autonomy, resilience, and the right to remain in territory. Housing is not merely a physical structure but a living system of identity, memory, and future-making. This work contributes to broader debates on rural social movements, ethnodevelopment, and post-conflict reconstruction, proposing an architecture of recognition that centers cultural specificity and community agency. The Community and Civil Research Group of Eötvös Loránd University (Budapest) investigated sustainable community activities in Hungary and abroad to identify local responses to global challenges. Using qualitative research methods, focus groups and interviews, this research defined the concepts of community service, community practice and working methods by analysing nearly 80 practical examples and 65 interviews in Hungary. The practical examples were used to create a “sustainable community model” and a methodological guide for community developers on how to implement community services. The steps of the process presented in the model are based on building community involvement and participation, mobilising local resources and capacities, creating community-based services, building sustainability and self-sufficiency and consolidating innovative training and community working practices. The research resulted in the creation of an online Community Repository, which provides community responses to the 17 UN Global Sustainability Challenges and Goals —economic growth, social inclusion and environmental protection—by organising the collected community services, small community practices and working methods around seven community development perspectives: governance, place, sustainable livelihoods, culture (and the arts), identity (belonging and connection), human rights and resilience and engagement and knowledge. This study provides a methodological foundation for developing resilient community-based services that contribute to sustainability, inclusivity and innovation. Full article

The incentives in fee-for-service healthcare payment systems to increase clinical volume often work in opposition to efforts to coordinate care or improve care delivery in partnership with community-based services. There has been increasing interest in and adoption of value-based care as an alternative healthcare delivery model in which clinician reimbursement is based on measures of healthcare quality and patient outcomes, meant to shift the focus from generating volume toward providing more efficient, coordinated care. In this commentary, we discuss potential benefits, challenges, and unintended consequences of this fundamental shift in payment systems and the specific implications for autism services, highlighting critical areas of focus for future research and policy development. Pollution and freshwater scarcity, coupled with the energy sector’s continued dependence on fossil fuels, constitute a dual challenge to sustainable development. A promising response is biosystems that jointly address wastewater treatment and the production of renewable products. This review centers on a managed consortium of aquatic macrophytes and microalgae, in which the spatial architecture of plant communities, rhizosphere processes, and the photosynthetic activity of microalgae act in concert. This configuration simultaneously expands the spectrum of removable pollutants and yields biomass suitable for biorefinery, thereby linking remediation to the production of energy carriers and bioproducts within a circular bioeconomy. The scientific novelty lies in treating the integrated platform as a coherent technological unit, and in using the biomass “metabolic passport” to align cultivation conditions with optimal valorization trajectories. The work offers a practical framework for designing and scaling such consortia that can reduce the toxicological load on aquatic ecosystems, return macronutrients to circulation, and produce low-carbon energy carriers. This study investigates hotel employees’ perceptions of AI-driven human resource (HR) management systems within the Accor Group’s properties across three major European cities: Paris, Berlin, and Amsterdam. These diverse urban contexts, spanning a broad portfolio of hotel brands from luxury to economy, provide a rich setting for exploring how AI integration affects employee attitudes and work–life balance. A total of 437 employees participated in the survey, offering a robust dataset for structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis. Exploratory factor analysis identified two primary factors shaping perceptions: AI Perceptions, which encompasses employee views on AI’s impact on job performance, communication, recognition, and retention, and balanced management, reflecting attitudes toward fairness, personal consideration, productivity, and skill development in AI-managed environments. The results reveal a complex but optimistic view, where employees acknowledge AI’s potential to enhance operational efficiency and career optimism but also express concerns about flexibility loss and the need for human oversight. The findings underscore the importance of transparent communication, contextual sensitivity, and continuous training in implementing AI systems that support both organizational goals and employee well-being. This study contributes valuable insights to hospitality management by highlighting the relational and ethical dimensions of algorithmic HR systems across varied organizational and cultural settings. Set against the current societal and religious contexts that Church of England schools find themselves positioned in, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer, Plus (LGBTQ+) teachers must navigate the contested space between their embodied identity and expectations of others. Whilst this research focuses specifically on Church of England schools in England, broader questions of belonging, purpose, and pedagogy are argued to transcend geographical and denominational boundaries. In this series of six interviews with teachers at different career stages who work, or have worked, in Church of England secondary and primary schools, we explore their lived experience of balancing their queer identity against the professional standards of teaching and the views of the school community. Five LGBTQ+ teachers and one ally were interviewed—all but one of whom hold or held senior leadership positions. Key foci for the researchers were discussions around the often-unacknowledged pressure and responsibility that teachers might feel for being a role model for the LGBTQ+ community, with particular nuances due to the Church school context, and, in particular, if the teachers felt that the school environment enabled them to be their authentic selves. An overarching concern was the extent to which LGBTQ+ teachers felt that they were able to thrive in these communities. One consideration for the authors was a hope that key messages could be shared with Diocesan Education Leaders that might enable future generations of LGBTQ+ teachers to feel that they were being appropriately supported and enabled. Pacific youth in Aotearoa New Zealand are culturally diverse and deeply rooted in their families and communities. Despite facing socioeconomic inequities, systemic barriers, and limited decision-making opportunities, they maintain a positive perception of health and actively contribute to collective wellbeing. This paper explores the strengths of Pacific youth and how these can be harnessed to mobilise community wellbeing and transformative change. Using Pacific research methodologies—lalaga (weaving) and talanoa—we integrate findings from three key sources: the Talavou o le Moana Pacific Youth19 Report (quantitative data from 1130 Pacific youth), the Pacific Youth Home and Family Brief (open-text responses on family life), and insights from a panel of Pacific policy, research, and community experts presented in a webinar. These resources were reviewed and woven together by a team of three Pacific practitioners and one New Zealand European researcher, all with backgrounds in youth health, social work, and Pacific education. The lalaga reveals Pacific youth’s collective strength, cultural identity, and deep sense of responsibility. Their resilience and leadership, even amid adversity, highlight the urgent need for culturally grounded, youth-led, and community-responsive approaches. Empowering Pacific youth as agents of change is essential for fostering holistic wellbeing and transformative futures. Full article

People with disabilities often face challenges like moving around independently and depending on personal caregivers for daily life activities. Traditional assistive devices are universally accepted by these communities, but they are designed with one-size-fits-all approaches that cannot adjust to individual human sizes, are not easily customized, and are made from rigid materials that do not adapt as a person’s condition changes over time. This systematic review examines the integration of smart materials, sensors, actuators, and 3D/4D printing technologies in advancing assistive devices, with a particular emphasis on mobility aids. In this work, the authors conducted a comparative analysis of traditional devices with commercially available innovative prototypes and research stage assistive devices by focusing on smart adaptable materials and sustainable additive manufacturing techniques. The results demonstrate how artificial intelligence drives smart assistive devices in hospital decentralized additive manufacturing, and policy frameworks agree with the Sustainable Development Goals, representing the future direction for adaptive assistive technology. Also, by combining 3D/4D printing and AI, it is possible to produce adaptive, affordable, and patient centered rehabilitation with feedback and can also provide predictive and preventive healthcare strategies. The successful commercialization of adaptive assistive devices relies on cost effective manufacturing techniques clinically aligned development supported by cross disciplinary collaboration to ensure scalable, sustainable, and universally accessible smart solutions. Ultimately, it paves the way for smart, sustainable, and clinically viable assistive devices that outperform conventional solutions and promote equitable access for all users. Full article

Swarm Robotics (SR) is a relatively new field, inspired by the collective intelligence of social insects. It involves using local rules to control and coordinate large groups (swarms) of relatively simple physical robots. Important tasks that robot swarms can handle include demining, search, rescue, and cleaning up toxic spills. Over the past decade, the research effort in the field of Swarm Robotics has intensified significantly in terms of hardware, software, and systems integrated developments, yet significant challenges remain, particularly regarding standardization, scalability, and cost-effective deployment. To contextualize the state of Swarm Robotics technologies, this paper provides a systematic literature review (SLR) of Swarm Robotic technologies published from 2014 to 2024, with an emphasis on how hardware and software subsystems have co-evolved. This work provides an overview of 40 studies in peer-reviewed journals along with a well-defined and replicable systematic review protocol. The protocol describes criteria for including and excluding studies and outlines a data extraction approach. We explored trends in sensor hardware, actuation methods, communication devices, and energy systems, as well as an examination of software platforms to produce swarm behavior, covering meta-heuristic algorithms and generic middleware platforms such as ROS. Our results demonstrate how dependent hardware and software are to achieve Swarm Intelligence, the lack of uniform standards for their design, and the pragmatic limits which hinder scalability and deployment. We conclude by noting ongoing challenges and proposing future directions for developing interoperable, energy-efficient Swarm Robotics (SR) systems incorporating machine learning (ML). Full article

The article addresses the challenges of beam position tracking in Free-Space Optical Communication (FSOC) systems. A review of available photodetector technologies is presented, highlighting their operating principles and applications in optical links. The analysis indicates that most current monitoring devices function with the visible and near- or short-infrared ranges. However, due to the propagation characteristics of radiation in terrestrial environments, the mid-wave infrared (MWIR) region offers particularly promising opportunities. To the end, the work introduces a novel detector module based on an MWIR quadrant detector capable of simultaneously performing two essential tasks: monitoring beam position and receiving transmitted data. Such an integrated approach has the potential to significantly simplify the design of mobile FSOC systems, especially those requiring accurate transceivers’ tracking. The concept was validated through laboratory experiments on an MWIR link model, where both the signal bandwidth and position transfer function of the quadrant detector were examined. Full article

Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) has become an attractive option for maritime communication because it is low-cost, long-range, and energy-efficient. Yet its performance at sea is often limited by fading, interference, and the strict energy budgets of maritime Internet of Things (IoT) devices. This review, prepared in line with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines, examines 23 peer-reviewed studies published between 2019 and 2025 that explore adaptive antenna solutions for LoRaWAN in marine environments. The work covered four main categories: switched-beam, phased array, reconfigurable, and Artificial Intelligence or Machine Learning (AI/ML)-enabled antennas. Results across studies show that adaptive approaches improve gain, beam agility, and signal reliability even under unstable conditions. Switched-beam antennas dominate the literature (45%), followed by phased arrays (30%), reconfigurable designs (20%), and AI/ML-enabled systems (5%). Unlike previous reviews, this study emphasizes maritime propagation, environmental resilience, and energy use. Despite encouraging results in signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), packet delivery, and coverage range, clear gaps remain in protocol-level integration, lightweight AI for constrained nodes, and large-scale trials at sea. Research on reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) in maritime environments remains limited. However, these technologies could play an important role in enhancing spectral efficiency, coverage, and the scalability of maritime IoT networks. Full article

Introduction: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a public health concern, and people at risk for TB are hesitant to seek care. The first South African National TB prevalence survey, conducted in 2017–2019, found that most participants with TB symptoms did not seek care for TB. In 2022, an estimated 23% of people with TB in South Africa were undiagnosed, contributing to the country’s burden of “missing” TB cases. This study explores health-seeking behaviour among people with TB (PwTB) in South Africa, focussing on barriers and facilitators to care-seeking and the quantification of TB-related stigma from a patient and community perspective. Methods: We conducted a mixed-method study in the City of Johannesburg (COJ) Metropolitan Municipality from February to March 2022. PwTB aged 18 and older initiating TB treatment for microbiologically confirmed pulmonary TB were recruited from three primary healthcare facilities in the COJ. After providing written informed consent, they participated in a one-time, in-depth, face-to-face interview. The interviews were digitally recorded and conducted by trained facilitators. We used thematic analysis with deductive approaches to develop themes. We used the Van Rie TB stigma assessment scale to quantify perceived stigma. Results: We interviewed 23 PwTB with an overall median age of 39 years and 14 (61%) males. Patient-level barriers to accessing TB care included visiting traditional healers and pharmacists before their TB diagnosis; wrong or missed diagnosis by private doctors; work commitments; scarcity of resources to attend the clinic or walk long distances; perceived and experienced stigma; and a lack of TB knowledge. Facility-level barriers included long clinic queues and uncertainty about where to receive TB care in the clinic. Facilitators for TB care-seeking included being in contact with someone who had TB, receiving encouragement from family, or having knowledge about TB transmission and early diagnosis. The overall median total stigma score among 21 PwTB was 53 (IQR: 46–63), with median community and patient stigma scores of 25 (IQR: 22–30) and 31 (IQR: 21–36), respectively. Conclusions: We found important considerations for the TB programme to improve the uptake of services. Since PwTB consult elsewhere before visiting a facility for TB care, TB programmes could establish private–public partnerships. TB programmes could also increase TB awareness in the community, especially among males, and mobile clinics could be considered to assist with TB case detection and treatment provision. Applying behavioural design techniques and co-designing interventions with patients and providers could improve TB health-seeking behaviours. Full article

Real-Time Face Gesture-Based Robot Control Using GhostNet in a Unity Simulation Environment

Unlike traditional control systems that rely on physical input devices, facial gesture-based interaction offers a contactless and intuitive method for operating autonomous systems. Recent advances in computer vision and deep learning have enabled the use of facial expressions and movements for command recognition in human–robot interaction. In this work, we propose a lightweight, real-time facial gesture recognition method, GhostNet-BiLSTM-Attention (GBA), which integrates GhostNet and BiLSTM with an attention mechanism, is trained on the FaceGest dataset, and is integrated with a 3D robot simulation in Unity. The system is designed to recognize predefined facial gestures such as head tilts, eye blinks, and mouth movements with high accuracy and low inference latency. Recognized gestures are mapped to specific robot commands and transmitted to a Unity-based simulation environment via socket communication across machines. This framework enables smooth and immersive robot control without the need for conventional controllers or sensors. Real-time evaluation demonstrates the system’s robustness and responsiveness under varied user and lighting conditions, achieving a classification accuracy of 99.13% on the FaceGest dataset. The GBA holds strong potential for applications in assistive robotics, contactless teleoperation, and immersive human–robot interfaces. Full article

In this study, I expand on the Black feminist tradition of rethinking Black women’s activism by examining how Black queer women’s fashion shows challenge traditional definitions and sites of activism. I present BlaQueer Style as an interpretive framework that largely draws on the wisdom and theories of Black feminism to undercover how these productions and the politics that shape them are not only sites of activism because they challenge the conventions of mainstream cultural institutions, but because they make space for the social and personal transformation of the communities they center. In this analysis of two public LGBTQ+ fashion shows, I argue that intention aside, the Black queer women founders and fashion workers and their practices and performances of centering marginalized communities, using the body to signal and subvert controlling images, and building coalition among these communities, highlight the liberatory potential of their fashion work. In a time when Black queer and trans people are experiencing misrepresentation and other forms of violence globally, BlaQueer Style is what I name the politics that presents a deep commitment to both the aesthetics and the liberation of these communities in Black queer women’s fashion work.
