Visual inspection remains a cornerstone of quality control in welded structures, yet manual evaluations are inherently constrained by subjectivity, inconsistency, and limited scalability. This study presents WeldVGG, a deep learning-based visual inspection model designed to automate weld defect classification using radiographic imagery. The proposed model is trained on the RIAWELC dataset, a publicly available collection of X-ray weld images acquired in real manufacturing environments and annotated across four defect conditions: cracking, porosity, lack of penetration, and no defect. RIAWELC offers high-resolution imagery and standardized class labels, making it a valuable benchmark for defect classification under realistic conditions. To improve trust and explainability, Grad-CAM++ is employed to generate class-discriminative saliency maps, enabling visual validation of predictions. The model is rigorously evaluated through stratified cross-validation and benchmarked against traditional machine learning baselines, including SVC, Random Forest, and a state-of-the-art architecture, MobileNetV3. The proposed model achieves high classification accuracy and interpretability, offering a practical and scalable solution for intelligent weld inspection. Furthermore, to prove the model’s ability to generalize, a test on the GDXray was performed, yielding positive results. Additionally, a Wilcoxon signed-rank test was conducted separately to assess statistical significance between model performances. Full article

As high-speed railway systems continue to develop toward intelligent operation, axle box bearings integrated with sensors have become key components for real-time condition monitoring. However, introducing sensor-embedded slots disrupts the structural continuity and thermal conduction paths of traditional bearing rings. This results in localized stress concentrations and thermal distortion, which compromise the bearing’s overall performance and service life. This study focuses on a double-row tapered roller bearing used in axle boxes and develops a multi-physics finite element model incorporating the effects of sensor-embedded grooves, based on Hertzian contact theory and the Palmgren frictional heat model. Both contact load verification and thermo-mechanical coupling analysis were performed to evaluate the influence of two key design parameters—groove depth and arc length—on equivalent stress, temperature distribution, and thermo-mechanical coupling deformation. The results show that the embedded slot structure significantly alters the local thermodynamic response. Especially when the slot depth reaches a certain value, both stress and deformation due to thermo-mechanical effects exhibit obvious nonlinear escalation. During the design process, the length and depth of the arc-shaped embedded slot, among other parameters, should be strictly controlled. The study of the stress and temperature characteristics under the thermos-mechanical coupling effect of the axle box bearing is of crucial importance for the design of the intelligent bearing body structure and safety assessment. An approximate optimal control issue for modular unmanned systems (MUSs) is presented via a cooperative differential game for solving the trajectory tracking problem. Initially, the modular unmanned system’s dynamic model is built with the joint torque feedback technique. The moment of inertia of the motor rotor has positive symmetry. Each MUS module is deemed as a participant in the cooperative differential game. Then, the MUS trajectory tracking problem is transformed into an approximate optimal control problem by means of adaptive critic design (ACD). The approximate optimal control is obtained by the critic network, approaching the joint performance index function of the system. The stability of the closed-loop system is proved through Lyapunov theory. The feasibility of the proposed control algorithm is verified by an experimental platform. Full article

This paper focuses on the design of a three-dimensional trajectory tracking controller for underactuated quadrotor-like autonomous underwater vehicles (QAUVs) subject to actuator saturation. A hand position method with a signum function is proposed to handle the under-actuation of QAUVs, while avoiding trajectory tracking in the opposite direction. The dynamic surface control (DSC) technique is integrated to eliminates the complexity explosion problem of standard backstepping. An auxiliary dynamic system is employed to handle input saturation. By using Lyapunov stability theory and phase plane analysis, it is proved that the proposed control law ensures that the QAUVs converge to the desired position with arbitrarily small errors, while guaranteeing the uniform ultimate boundedness of the whole closed-loop system. Comparative simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed control law. Full article

Vehicle Wind Noise Prediction Using Auto-Encoder-Based Point Cloud Compression and GWO-ResNet

In response to the inability to quickly assess wind noise performance during the early stages of automotive styling design, this paper proposes a method for predicting interior wind noise by integrating automotive point cloud models with the Gray Wolf Optimization Residual Network model (GWO-ResNet). Based on wind tunnel test data under typical operating conditions, the point cloud model of the test vehicle is compressed using an auto-encoder and used as input features to construct a nonlinear mapping model between the whole vehicle point cloud and the wind noise level at the driver’s left ear. Through adaptive optimization of key hyperparameters of the ResNet model using the gray wolf optimization algorithm, the accuracy and generalization of the prediction model are improved. The prediction results on the test set indicate that the proposed GWO-ResNet model achieves prediction results that are consistent with the actual measured values for the test samples, thereby validating the effectiveness of the proposed method. A comparative analysis with traditional ResNet models, GWO-LSTM models, and LSTM models revealed that the GWO-ResNet model achieved Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) and mean squared error (MSE) of 9.72% and 20.96, and 9.88% and 19.69, respectively, on the sedan and SUV test sets, significantly outperforming the other comparison models. The prediction results on the independent validation set also demonstrate good generalization ability and stability (MAPE of 10.14% and 10.15%, MSE of 23.97 and 29.15), further proving the reliability of this model in practical applications. The research results provide an efficient and feasible technical approach for the rapid evaluation of wind noise performance in vehicles and provide a reference for wind noise control in the early design stage of vehicles. At the same time, due to the limitations of the current test data, it is impossible to predict the wind noise during the actual driving of the vehicle. Subsequently, the wind noise during actual driving can be predicted by the test data of multiple working conditions. Full article

Background: Personalizing adjuvant chemotherapy (ACT) after curative resection in early-stage NSCLC remains unmet because prior ACT-biomarker findings rarely reproduce across studies. Key barriers are platform and preprocessing heterogeneity, dominant batch effects, and incomplete ACT annotations. As a result, many signatures that perform well in a single cohort fail during external validation. We created an open, harmonized meta-database linking gene expression with curated ACT exposure and survival to enable fair benchmarking and modeling. Methods: A PRISMA-guided search of 999 GEO studies (through January 2025) used LLM-assisted triage of titles, clinical tables, and free text to identify datasets with explicit ACT status and patient-level survival. Eight Affymetrix microarray cohorts (GPL570/GPL96) met eligibility. Raw CEL files underwent robust multi-array average; probes were re-annotated to Entrez IDs and collapsed by median. Covariate-preserving ComBat adjusted platform/study while retaining several clinical factors. Batch structure was quantified by principal-component analysis (PCA) variance, silhouette width, and UMAP. Two quality-control (QC) filters, median M-score deviation and PCA leverage, flagged and removed technical outliers. Results: The final meta-database comprises 1340 patients (223 (16.6%) ACT; 1117 (83.4%) observation), 13,039 intersecting genes, and 594 overall-survival events. Batch-associated variance (PC1 + PC2) decreased from 63.1% to 20.1%, and mean silhouette width shifted from 0.82 to −0.19 post-correction. Seven arrays (0.5%) were excluded by QC. Event depth supports high-dimensional survival and heterogeneity-of-treatment modeling, and the multi-cohort design enables internal–external validation. Conclusions: This first open, rigorously harmonized NSCLC transcriptomic database provides the sample size, demographic diversity, and technical consistency required to benchmark ACT-benefit markers. By making these data openly available, it will accelerate equitable precision-oncology research and enable data-driven treatment decisions in early-stage NSCLC. Full article

Long-term greenhouse operations face a critical challenge in the form of soil quality degradation, yet the key intervention periods and underlying mechanisms of this process remain unclear. This study aims to quantify the effects of greenhouse lifespan on the evolution of soil quality and to identify critical periods for intervention. We conducted a systematic survey of greenhouse operations in a representative area of Yunnan Province, Southwest China, and adopted a space-for-time substitution design. Using open-field cultivation (OF) as the control, we sampled and analyzed soils from vegetable greenhouses with greenhouse lifespans of 2 years (G2), 5 years (G5), and 10 years (G10). The results showed that early-stage greenhouse operation (G2) significantly increased soil temperature (ST) by 8.38–19.93% and soil porosity (SP) by 16.21–56.26%, promoted nutrient accumulation and enhanced aggregate stability compared to OF. However, as the greenhouse lifespan increased, the soil aggregates gradually disintegrated, particle-size distribution shifted toward finer clay fractions, and pH changed from neutral to slightly alkaline, exacerbating nutrient imbalances. Compared with G2, G10 exhibited reductions in mean weight diameter (MWD) and soil organic matter (SOM) of 2.41–5.93% and 24.78–30.93%, respectively. Among greenhouses with different lifespans, G2 had the highest soil quality index (SQI), which declined significantly with extended operation; at depths of 0–20 cm and 20–40 cm, the SQI of G10 was 32.59% and 38.97% lower than that of G2, respectively (p < 0.05). Structural equation modeling (SEM) and random forest analysis indicated that the improvement in SQI during the early stage of greenhouse use was primarily attributed to the optimization of soil hydrothermal characteristics and pore structure. Notably, the 2–5 years was the critical stage of rapid decline in SQI, during which intensive water and fertilizer inputs reduced the explanatory power of soil nutrients for SQI. Under long-term continuous cropping, the reduction in MWD and SOM was the main reason for the decline in SQI. This study contributes to targeted soil management during the critical period for sustainable production of protected vegetables in southern China. Full article

Encapsulation of lubricating agents has many advantages, as it helps to protect them from external factors, oxidation and degradation, can support their controlled and prolonged release, and also preserves the environment from accidental contamination with these substances. In our experiments various types of thermo-responsive, paraffin wax capsules capable of safely transporting liquid and semi-solid lubricants were designed, fabricated and tested. Lubricating oils were primarily encapsulated inside hemispherical wax shells closed with special caps, but also in wax spherocylinders and two-compartment structures. Greases were protected with wax coatings with the thickness ranging from 0.187 to 0.774 mm. The payload release from our core–shell capsules occurred not only due to the exerted mechanical force but also in a controlled manner upon prolonged contact with a heated surface. The wax shells of the capsules lying on the plate, whose temperature was increased at a rate of 0.025°C/s, began to melt gradually, starting from ≈55.5 °C. This temperature-triggered lubricant liberation can be useful when, for example, a machine element becomes excessively hot due to friction. The wax itself also has lubricating properties, so the crushed or melted coating cannot be treated as waste, but only as an additional factor supporting lubrication. The practical applications of our wax capsules were demonstrated with five examples. Full article

To address the issue of jitter and oscillation of guidance command during multi-vehicle cooperative engagement with maneuvering platforms, this paper proposes a novel terminal guidance law with prescribed performance constraints for multiple cooperative vehicles, which explicitly considers both transient and steady-state performance. Firstly, based on the vehicle-target relative kinematics, with time and space as the main constraint indicators, a multi-vehicle cooperative guidance model is established in the inertial coordinate system. Secondly, combined with the sliding mode control theory, cooperative guidance laws are designed for both the line-of-sight (LOS) direction and the LOS normal direction, respectively, and the Lyapunov stability proof is given. Furthermore, to counteract the impact of target maneuvers on guidance performance, a non-homogeneous disturbance observer is designed to estimate target maneuver information that is difficult to obtain directly, which ensures that performance constraints are still satisfied under strong target maneuvering conditions. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed guidance law enables multiple coordinated vehicles to successfully engage the target under different maneuvering modes, while satisfying the terminal time-space constraints. Compared with conventional sliding mode control methods exhibiting inherent chattering, the proposed approach employs a novel PPC-SMC hybrid structure to quantitatively constrain the transient convergence of cooperative errors. This structure enhances the multi-vehicle cooperative guidance performance by effectively eliminating chattering and oscillations in the guidance commands, thereby significantly improving the system’s transient behavior. The development of single-crystal Ni-rich layered cathode materials (SC-NCMs) is regarded as an effective strategy to address the mechanical failure issues commonly associated with polycrystalline counterparts. However, the industrial production of SC-NCM faces challenges such as lengthy processing steps, high manufacturing costs, and inconsistent product quality. In this study, we innovatively propose a metal/organic framework (MOF)-mediated one-step synthesis strategy to achieve controllable structural preparation and in situ Nb5+ doping in SC-NCM. Using a Ni–Co–Mn-based MOF as both precursor and self-template, we precisely regulated the thermal treatment pathway to guide the nucleation and oriented growth of high-density SC-NCM particles. Simultaneously, Nb5+ was pre-anchored within the MOF framework, enabling atomic-level homogeneous doping into the transition metal layers during crystal growth. Exceptional electrochemical performance is revealed in the in situ Nb-doped SC-NCM, with an initial discharge capacity reaching 176 mAh/g at a 1C rate and a remarkable capacity retention of 86.36% maintained after 200 cycles. This study paves a versatile and innovative pathway for the design of high-stability, high-energy-density cathode materials via a MOF-mediated synthesis strategy, enabling precise manipulation of both morphology and chemical composition. Predefined-time control has been extensively implemented in marine control systems due to its capability to enhance transient performance and achieve superior control specifications. However, inaccurate control execution resulting from faulty actuators can compromise this control strategy and critically undermine system performance. To address this challenge, this paper propose a predefined-time model predictive fault-tolerant control strategy for unmanned surface vessels (USVs) while considering actuator failures and ocean disturbances. Firstly, a novel predefined-time model predictive control (PTMPC) strategy is designed by incorporating contraction constraints derived from an auxiliary predefined-time control system into the proposed optimization framework. This ensures that the resulting control variables guarantee predefined-time convergence of tracking errors when applied to the USV system. Furthermore, a long short-term memory-based neural network for disturbance prediction is integrated into the control strategy, leveraging its exceptional capability in modeling temporal sequences to achieve accurate forecasting of ocean disturbances. Thirdly, the proposed control scheme utilizes its integrated fault observation mechanism to actively compensate for actuator failures through real-time fault estimation, ensuring predefined-time convergence performance while providing rigorous guarantees of closed-loop stability and feasibility. Finally, simulation results demonstrate the efficacy and superiority of the proposed algorithm. Full article

In this paper, the evaluation of the mechanical performance of novel, designed topologically optimized shin pads with advanced materials will be conducted with the aid of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to assess the endurance of the final structure on impact phenomena extracted from actual real-life data acquired from contact sports. The main focus of the developed prototype is to have high-enough energy absorption capabilities and vibration isolation properties, crucial for the development of trustworthy protective equipment. The insertion of advanced materials with controlled weight fractions and lattice geometries aims to strategically improve those properties and provide tailored characteristics similar to the actual human skeleton. The final design is expected to be used as standalone protective equipment for athletes or as a protective shield for the development of human lower limb prosthetics. In this context, computational investigation of the dynamic mechanical response was conducted by replicating a real-life phenomenon of the impact during a contact sport in a median condition of a stud kick impact and an extreme case scenario to assess the dynamic response under shock-absorption conditions and the final design’s structural integrity by taking into consideration the injury prevention capabilities. The results demonstrate that the proposed lattice geometries positively influence the injury prevention capabilities by converting a severe injury to light one, especially in the gyroid structure where the prototype presented a unified pattern of stress distribution and a higher reduction in the transmitted force. The incorporation of the PA-12 matrix reinforced with the reused ground tire rubber results in a structure with high enough overall strength and crucial modifications on the absorption and damping capabilities vital for the integrity under dynamic conditions. Background: Patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) require effective bracing to control curve progression. However, most traditional spinal braces commonly pose challenges in terms of undesired bulkiness and restricted mobility. Recent advancements have focused on innovative brace designs, utilizing novel materials and structural configurations to improve wearability and functionality. However, it remains unclear how effective these next-generation braces are biomechanically compared to traditional braces. Objectives: This review aimed to analyze the design features of next-generation AIS braces and assess their biomechanical effectiveness via reviewing contemporary studies. Methods: Studies on newly designed scoliosis braces over the past decade were searched in databases, including Web of Science, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Wiley, EBCOHost and SpringerLink. The Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist for Cohort Studies was adopted to evaluate the quality of the included studies. The data extracted for biomechanical effect analysis included brace components/materials, design principle, interfacial pressure, morphological changes, and intercomparison parameters. Results: A total of 19 studies encompassing 12 different kinds of braces met the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Clinical effectiveness was reported in 14 studies, with an average short-term Cobb angle correction of 25.4% (range: 12.41–34.3%) and long-term correction of 18.22% (range: 15.79–19.3%). This result aligned broadly with the previously reported efficacy of the traditional braces in short-term cases (range: 12.36–31.33%), but was lower than the long-term ones (range: 23.02–33.6%). Two included studies reported an interface pressure range between 6.0 kPa and 24.4 kPa for novel braces, which was comparable to that of the traditional braces (4.8–30.0 kPa). Additionally, five of six studies reported the trunk asymmetric parameters and demonstrated improvement in trunk alignment. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that most newly designed scoliosis braces could achieve comparable biomechanical efficacy to the conventional designs, particularly in interface pressure management and Cobb angle correction. However, future clinical adoption of these novel braces requires further improvements of ergonomic design and three-dimensional correction, as well as more investigation and rigorous evidence on the long-term treatment outcomes and cost-effectiveness. This paper solves the stabilization problem of the continuous-time switched systems with partly unstabilizable subsystems subject to actuator saturation and data quantization. The static quantizer is designed by properly restraining the density of the finite partition. The relationship between an ellipse and a polyhedral is established and a suitable expression for the controller suffered by data quantization and actuator saturation is obtained. By defining the attraction domain and the invariant set based on the union or intersection of ellipses, we guarantee the decrement of the Lyapunov function in the optimal case if the state is within a given annular area. On this basis, if average dwell time and activation time of stabilizable subsystems meet some constraints, we derive that every trajectory whose initial state is within the given region will fall into a small ellipsoid and stay in a slightly larger ellipsoid. An illustrative example is given to verify the validity of the theoretical analysis. Full article

In this study, a dynamically tunable terahertz device based on a VO2–graphene hybrid metasurface is proposed, which realizes the dual functions of ultra-wideband absorption and efficient transmission through VO2 phase transformation. At 345 K (metallic state), the device attains an absorption efficiency exceeding 90% (average 97.06%) in the range of 2.25–6.07 THz (bandwidth 3.82 THz), showing excellent absorption performance. At 318 K (insulated state), the device achieves 67.66–69.51% transmittance in the 0.1–2.14 THz and 7.51–10 THz bands while maintaining a broadband absorption of 3.6–5.08 THz (an average of 81.99%). Compared with traditional devices, the design breaks through the performance limitations by integrating phase change material control with 2D materials. The patterned graphene design simplifies the fabrication process. System analysis reveals that the device is polarization-insensitive and tunable via graphene Fermi energy and relaxation time. The device’s excellent temperature response and wide angular stability provide a novel solution for terahertz switching, stealth technology, and sensing applications. Full article
