Do Data Factors Empower the Realization of Ecological Product Value? Evidence from China

With the deepening construction of ecological civilization, the realization of ecological product value, referring to the value derived from ecosystems’ material goods, regulation, support, and cultural services, has become a strategic key point for national sustainable development. Data factors, distinguished from digital technologies as the actual resources used in production, exchange, and consumption, are becoming increasingly important as a new catalyst for empowering the realization of ecological product value. Drawing on panel data spanning 2011 to 2023 across China’s 31 provinces, this research employs the entropy weight method to construct evaluation indices for both the development of data factors and the realization of ecological product value, deriving weights from the data’s intrinsic variability. The effect of data factors on the realization of ecological product value is examined using a two-way fixed effects framework. Our outcomes are presented below. First, data factors can significantly promote the realization of ecological product value, and this conclusion is supported by a series of robustness checks and endogeneity treatments. Second, the mechanism analysis reveals that data factors empower the realization of ecological product value through new quality productive forces, energy consumption intensity, and innovation and entrepreneurship. Third, results from the threshold model suggest that the promoting effect of data factors on the realization of ecological product value is subject to a threshold constraint, characterized by diminishing marginal returns beyond this point. Fourth, regarding regional disparities, the results indicate that data factors primarily drive ecological product value realization in the central region, as it is at a critical stage of digital transformation, with a secondary effect in the east, while their influence in the western region remains insignificant. These findings provide important guidance for integrating data factors and ecological resources to achieve sustainable development. Full article

Polluted mangroves are ecologically sensitive habitats that provide ecosystem services. In a selected polluted forest of Simaisma, viable aerobic, halophilic, and heterotrophic hydrocarbon-degrading bacterial strains were isolated from both rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere regions. The chemical composition of sediment showed a clear distinction between the rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere sites, as well as coastal and non-coastal sediments, as per Principal Component Analysis (PCA) clustering. Anthracene, an indicator of oil pollution, was present along with vanadium, another marker of oil pollution. Through selective enrichment cultures, a total of 25 hydrocarbon-degrading bacterial strains were isolated, including Lysinibacillus xylanilyticus, Bacillus cereus, Lysinibacillus sphaericus, Pseudomonas stutzeri, Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, and Staphylococcus warneri. To link the adaptation of bacteria to sediment chemistry, nine B. cereus strains were investigated using their MALDI-TOF MS protein profiles combined with their dendrogram. The relationship between protein profiles of B. cereus strains with their biosurfactant production capabilities was explained by a tanglogram. The tanglegram suggests that biosurfactant production is an important functional trait in B. cereus, but it is not consistently reflected in the overall protein profile. This suggests that bacterial adaptation in the polluted mangrove sediments may involve changes at multiple cellular levels, including metabolic activity and variation in protein expression profiles. These findings confirm the involvement of mangrove-associated bacteria in the sustainability of mangrove forests by promoting bioremediation of oil pollution, thereby protecting coastal ecosystems and their environmental and socio-economic aspects. Rapid urbanization has profoundly reshaped land use patterns and intensified pressures on ecosystem structures, thereby exacerbating trade-offs and synergies among ecosystem services (ESs). Understanding ecosystem service trade-offs, synergies, and their attribution mechanisms is critical for balancing ecological conservation and regional sustainable development in rapidly developing regions. This study quantified provisioning, regulating, supporting, and cultural ecosystem services in Shandong Province from 2000 to 2020 using the InVEST model and spatial analysis. An integrated framework combining Pearson correlation and bagplot analysis was developed to identify linear and nonlinear ES trade-offs and synergies, while the XGBoost–SHAP model was applied to quantify the relative contributions of natural and socioeconomic drivers. Ecosystem service bundles were further identified using a self-organizing map to delineate spatially functional zones. The results showed that: (1) Provisioning and cultural services increased markedly, whereas regulating and supporting services generally declined. Spatially, provisioning services were concentrated in the western plains, regulating and supporting services in the central mountains and eastern hills, and cultural services in urban areas. (2) Strong trade-offs emerged between provisioning services and most regulating/supporting services, while regulating and supporting services exhibited pronounced synergies. Cultural services reflected a generally compatible relationship with other ESs. (3) Regulating and supporting services were primarily shaped by natural conditions and land use patterns, whereas provisioning and cultural services were more strongly driven by socioeconomic factors. (4) SOM clustering identified four major functional zones, the ecological core zone, the ecological degraded zone, the food production zone, and the urban composite zone, each corresponding to differentiated ecosystem functions and development trajectories. The integrated framework provides a scientific basis for ecosystem-service-oriented spatial zoning and targeted management strategies to reconcile ecological protection and urbanization in rapidly developing regions. This review provides insights on livestock farming in the Mediterranean regions, highlighting strengths, weakness, opportunities and threats. Biodiversity conservation and production of high-value, certified products are the main strengths of Mediterranean livestock systems. On the contrary, depopulation, low productivity and poor infrastructure and dependence on public subsides represent the main weaknesses of these systems. Climate change, market volatility and competition with intensive animal rearing systems are threats for Mediterranean livestock farming. A significant opportunity for Mediterranean livestock farming is represented by the presence of drought-tolerant native breeds and ecosystem services that contribute both to agricultural productivity and to ecosystem resilience and socio-cultural activities. Strategies that can promote local animal production in the Mediterranean region are provided with a focus on the Gentile di Puglia breed. Full article

Despite the rapid digitization of intangible cultural heritage (ICH), the complex mechanisms governing how users interact and co-create knowledge in digital spaces remain underexplored. Understanding the internal dynamics and engagement logic of these interactive environments is therefore essential to developing sustainable heritage knowledge ecosystems. Conceptualizing the Zhihu community as such an ecosystem, this study investigates ICH thematic structures, knowledge demands, and user participation. By employing an LLM-refined BERTopic framework, this study identified 36 core topics and mapped them onto a four-layer architecture (Cultural Resource Layer, Action Subject Layer, Social Support Layer, and External Interaction Layer) and five knowledge demand dimensions (Basic Knowledge, Cultural Experience, Professional Development, Protection and Inheritance, and Modern Application) through weighted semantic similarity and Spearman correlation analysis. The results reveal a structural configuration dominated by the External Interaction Layer. A dual-track demand mechanism was identified, comprising a professionalized ability-oriented pathway and an affective experience-driven mode. Furthermore, deep engagement was primarily catalyzed by topics that integrate technology, action, and narrative, rather than structural prominence alone. The ICH knowledge ecosystem was characterized by an outward-looking and emotion-driven orientation. This research study contributes an ecosystem framework to heritage information while providing insights for practitioners to optimize digital ICH information services through multi-dimensional semantic integration and public co-creation. There exists a complex and intimate interplay between ecosystem services and human well-being. This coordination not only concerns regional sustainable development but also depends on the structural balance of various service functions within ecosystems. Therefore, based on three-phase data from 2000 to 2020, this study investigates the coupling coordination relationship between ecosystem services and human well-being in the Northeast Black Soil Region, along with its driving factors and influence pathways. Key ecosystem services and human well-being levels were quantified, introducing a two-level coupling coordination model: D1 (coordination between total ecosystem service provision and human well-being) and D2 (coordination between internal ecosystem service balance and human well-being). Results indicate that: (1) From 2000 to 2020, the Ecosystem Service Index showed an initial rise followed by a decline. Synergistic relationships among ecosystem services strengthened, while trade-offs between cultural services (Shannon diversity index) and other services persisted. High human well-being zones were highly concentrated in provincial capitals, indicating the gradual formation of a priority development pattern. (2) The coupling coordination level of D2 was significantly weaker overall than that of D1. Compared to the overall supply level, the coordination of internal ecosystem service functions was a more critical factor constraining regional comprehensive development. (3) Landscape patterns are the primary factor governing the coupling relationship between regional ecosystem services and human well-being. Future efforts should focus on optimizing landscape configurations to enhance both human well-being and ecosystem coordination. This study contributes to a better understanding of the relationship between ecosystem services and human well-being from the perspectives of both aggregate coordination and internal balance, and also provides valuable insights for research and management measures in regions characterized by intensive agricultural development and rapid urbanization. Urban green spaces provide essential ecosystem services, yet mismatches between subjective perceptions and objective assessments may constrain effective planning. This study examines the correspondence between perceived and measured ES across two contrasting urban green spaces in Shanghai: Century Park, a managed urban park, and Sanlin Green Space, a naturalistic urban forest. Objective ecosystem services (regulating, supporting, and cultural) were quantified using UAV-based biotope mapping and indicators including biophysical metrics (Net Primary Production, Water Retention, PM10 removal, and Land Surface Temperature), structural diversity indices (Shannon Diversity of land cover, vegetation, and tree structure), and visual–spatial proxies (Green View Index, Sky View Index, Water View Index, color metrics, and spatial openness). Subjective perceptions were derived from panoramic image-based questionnaires, with perception scores predicted using XGBoost and aggregated via SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP). Correlation analyses, spatial regression models, and partial least squares structural equation modeling were applied to explore relationships and pathways. Results show weak but significant positive associations in the urban park, whereas no overall correspondence was observed in the urban forest. Spatial mismatches were concentrated in biotopes with distinctive visual–ecological features and in fragmented areas. Green View Index is associated with higher perceptions in both sites, while the Sky View Index reduced perception in the forest context. These findings highlight strong context dependence in perceived–measured ecosystem service relationships and underscore the importance of integrating ecological structure and visual legibility in the design and management of the studied urban green spaces in Shanghai. The administrative boundaries of ecosystems do not necessarily align with natural watershed boundaries, which is a significant reason for the current inefficiency and pronounced conflicts in ecological governance. Using the watershed as the fundamental unit, this study assessed the forest ecosystem services (FES) of the Beihai Wetland watershed in Tengchong (As of 2025). Forest vegetation was classified to the formation level, and the functional value method was employed. The results showed the following order of service values: regulating services > provisioning services > supporting services > cultural services. Biodiversity was identified as the most valuable ecosystem function. The study further revealed that factors such as stand type, stand age, and altitude influence the total FES value within the watershed. Analysis of FES per unit stand (1 ha) indicated that Lithocarpus variolosus Franch. Chun (natural forest) exhibited the highest value. Through in-depth analysis of linear correlations and spatial associations of FES per unit stand, a synergy-trade-off visualization was constructed. This revealed that natural forests in the upper watershed may exert systemic effects on nutrient cycling in the lower watershed. The results obtained at the formation level provide support for the development of watershed-based forest tending plans. Moreover, studying FES using the watershed as a unit represents a practical exploration of the “life community of mountains, rivers, forests, farmlands, lakes, grasslands, and deserts” and offers a potential reference for maintaining the ecological security and supporting the ecological protection and restoration of the Beihai watershed. In light of the accelerating process of global urbanization, the quality of cultural ecosystem services (CES) in urban parks has become a core metric for efforts to promote urban livability and sustainable cities. However, previous research has failed to consider the differential impacts of the external environment across various travel scenes. In this study, 32 parks in Chengdu serve as the empirical data, and public CES perception data are extracted from social media comments via text mining. Based on a unified 15 min time threshold, we delineate the service scope for four travel scenes and employ geographically weighted regression and piecewise regression models to analyze the spatial heterogeneity, driving mechanisms and threshold effects associated with the relationship between external environmental factors and park CES. The findings indicate that the external environment’s influence on CES exhibits a “scene-factor-scale” adaptation pattern. Walking scenes are influenced primarily by land-use and population factors; in contrast, cycling scenes rely on the availability of shared bicycle facilities, and public transport and driving scenes are driven by economic vitality and traffic-support factors, respectively. Five critical thresholds are identified, including a 40% impervious surface area. This research proposes scene-based optimization strategies and helps enhance the “external environment–travel behavior–spatial characteristics” coupling framework, thereby serving as a scientific reference for efforts to improve 15 min living circles. River corridor rehabilitation is increasingly expected to deliver coupled outcomes by combining ecological recovery with measurable improvements in human well-being. Cultural ecosystem services (CESs), the non-material benefits people derive from landscapes, are central to this objective but remain difficult to operationalize in securitized transboundary settings, where border governance, uneven mobility, and community histories shape access to rivers and the formation of cultural meanings. This study examines whether perceived conservation effectiveness is associated with higher CES value in the Lower Jordan River Basin (LJRB) and whether this association persists after accounting for the community-group structure. Using survey data from 445 respondents across seven community groups, the perceived CES valuation was assessed through a five-point Cultural Significance rating, analyzed alongside conservation-related and contextual variables. Conservation was measured through perceived conservation impact and self-reported conservation involvement (yes/no). A staged inference design combined group comparisons and multivariable regression with adjustments for the community-group structure and contextual controls. Conservation involvement was not associated with meaningful differences in Cultural Significance. The perceived conservation impact showed a positive association in pooled and simple models but lost independent significance after adjusting for community-group structure, which accounted for much of the explanatory power. These findings indicate that CES valuation in the LJRB is structured more by community-group differences and borderland conditions than by individual conservation participation, underscoring the importance of locally encounterable outcomes and group-tailored engagement strategies in transboundary river planning. This study reconceptualises marginality in China’s inter-provincial border regions as a dynamic, scale-sensitive spatial relationship rather than a static condition of underdevelopment. Using the Hubei–Henan–Anhui border area as a case study, we quantitatively assess marginality across three dimensions—production, livelihood, and ecology—based on panel data from 61 counties for 2000, 2010, and 2021. The entropy-weighted TOPSIS method is used to calculate comprehensive development indices, and geographic detector models identify key driving factors. The results show that production marginality is persistently shaped by economic level and industrial structure. Livelihood marginality exhibits a clear temporal shift: dominant drivers move from healthcare security to cultural amenities and finally to transport accessibility. Ecological marginality remains primarily determined by natural endowments such as habitat quality and ecosystem services. Theoretically, the study advances marginality analysis by integrating spatial, temporal and dimensional perspectives. Practically, it offers a diagnostic framework to support differentiated, cross-administrative governance strategies that can transform peripheral border regions into cooperative hubs. Full article

Blue space, as an important natural and social composite feature system in cities, not only provides supporting, regulating, and provisioning services, but also plays a key role in human well-being, recreational experience, and urban sustainable development. The blue space cultural ecosystem service (CES) has gradually attracted the attention of academia in recent years, but there is a lack of systematic integration research in related fields. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a comprehensive analysis of current studies to clarify how, and to what extent, blue spaces influence CESs. This study adopts a PRISMA-based systematic search combined with qualitative synthesis, aiming to review the research status of CES and its developmental trajectory within blue space studies, and to identify future research trends and critical gaps. A total of 52 studies meeting the inclusion criteria were finally selected through database screening. The research innovatively divides the evolution of blue space CES into three stages (2012–2017/2018–2022/2023–2025), revealing a shift in research focus from single value identification to complex policy support. Secondly, through the mapping of six typical blue space types (such as rivers and wetlands) and 10 CES indicators, combined with a Pearson correlation heatmap, it provides quantitative insights into the coupling mechanisms between indicators, such as the significant synergy between spiritual and educational values. Methodologically, it systematically discriminates between the application boundaries of monetary valuation based on the contingent valuation method and non-monetary valuation represented by social media big data and PPGIS, pointing out that technological progress is driving the evaluation toward high dynamics and refinement. Finally, the study points out current bottlenecks such as uneven geographical distribution and insufficient planning transformation, emphasizing that future research should use artificial intelligence to improve data processing accuracy and transform blue space CESs from “invisible welfare” into “explicit policy assets” to guide sustainable urban renewal and healthy space design. Under the combined pressures of urbanization and tourism development, terraced agricultural heritage sites are increasingly threatened by the degradation of traditional landscapes, the weakening of living cultural practices, and mismatches between the supply and demand of cultural ecosystem services (CESs). As a representative type of Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHSs), the rice terrace landscapes of southern China have formed an integrated system of forests, villages, terraces, and water networks, embodying multiple values related to production, ecology, landscape, and culture. To support the coordination of heritage conservation, tourism development, and the transformation of cultural value, this study takes the core area of the Longji Terraced Fields as a case study and develops an improved SolVES–IPA collaborative assessment framework from the perspective of tourist perception. Four CES categories are examined: recreational value, aesthetic value, historical and cultural value, and educational value. The results show that (1) the four CES categories exhibit significant spatial differentiation. Recreational and aesthetic values are mainly concentrated in high-altitude viewing spaces, whereas historical, cultural, and educational values depend more heavily on traditional architectural spaces and interpretive nodes. (2) Clear supply–demand mismatches exist across CES categories. Recreational value is constrained by limited activity diversity; aesthetic value is limited by inadequate architectural harmony; historical and cultural value is primarily restricted by insufficient continuity of living traditions; and educational value is constrained by incomplete interpretive content and single presentation formats. (3) CES optimization in the Longji Terraced Fields should adopt both type-specific and hierarchical intervention strategies, including priority optimization for high-value units with critical shortcomings, near-term improvement for high-value units with general shortcomings, functional enhancement for medium-value units with critical shortcomings, progressive optimization for medium-value units with general shortcomings, and potential cultivation of low-value units. Based on these findings, this study proposes several optimization directions, including strengthening participatory experiences, promoting the coordinated renewal of the architectural landscape, creating multisensory cultural display spaces, and establishing a multidimensional interpretation network. The improved SolVES–IPA collaborative assessment framework developed in this study integrates CES spatial identification, supply–demand diagnosis, and optimization priority setting, providing a methodological reference and practical support for enhancing cultural services and promoting the coordinated development of heritage conservation and cultural tourism in the Longji Terraced Fields and similar agricultural heritage sites. A Study on the Supply–Demand Relationship of Cultural Ecosystem Services in the Changbai Mountain Tourism Area

Cultural ecosystem services (CES) provide non-material benefits that support human well-being and motivate ecosystem conservation, yet their subjectivity and spatial ambiguity complicate quantitative assessment and management. Taking the Changbai Mountain tourism area as a case, we adopted the ecosystem service matrix method to assess the CES supply score based on the natural system and human system. The service coverage density was obtained through accessibility, thereby quantifying the available supply index for each tourist source area. In addition, we quantified CES demand using a questionnaire survey. Demand for 10 CES types was measured via preference ranking and integrated with the entropy weight method; statistical analysis and GIS mapping were used to examine spatial patterns and influencing factors. Results show that: (1) The overall CES demand in the Changbai Mountain tourism area exhibits clear spatial differentiation, with higher demand in the central and eastern regions and lower demand in the northwest. High-demand areas are mainly concentrated in cities relatively close to the Changbai Mountain tourism area. (2) Among individual CES, recreation (r = 6.58), natural landscapes (r = 6.35), and aesthetic value (r = 6.19) receive the highest demand, and demand structure is significantly associated with occupation, education level, consumption level, and spatial distance. The results indicate that cultural services dominated by knowledge-based services are significantly positively correlated with educational level (r = 0.549, p < 0.001). (3) CES supply capacity shows strong seasonal fluctuations, and is frequently overloaded during peak seasons, leading to prominent supply–demand conflicts; with the exception of Shenyang, Dalian, Jilin and Anshan, the other 17 cities exhibit supply–demand imbalance. By integrating multiple CES types and multiple drivers, this study reveals spatial matching patterns of CES supply and demand in a complex mountain ecotourism region and provides evidence to support ecotourism management, service capacity improvement, and sustainable development. Ecosystem services (ESs) support human well-being, but their integrated assessment in urban green spaces remains challenging, particularly at the project scale, where finer spatial resolution (tens of meters) is required. Historical parks are complex socio-ecological systems with non-linear ES interactions. This study develops a design-oriented framework to assess how restoration interventions influence regulation, maintenance, and cultural ES potential provision. Indicators derived from field surveys and established models were selected according to CICES V5.2 and adapted to ecological and cultural features of historical parks. Survey units were defined for each ES section to enable a spatially explicit comparison between current and design scenarios. A normalized scoring system was applied to evaluate category-level changes and overall interaction patterns. The framework was tested on the restoration project of Monza Park (northern Italy). Results show a marked increase in cultural and regulation services (+28% and +17%, respectively), while maintenance services exhibited a slight decrease (−3%). These trends are reflected in the Cumulative Indicator Score (CIS), indicating an overall positive balance of ES provision in the design scenario. The Design Effectiveness Score (DES) showed consistently non-negative values (DES ≥ 0), reaching maximum effectiveness in transitions to woody vegetation (DES ≈ 1). The Synergy–Trade-off Score (STS) confirmed a general increase in ES supply across all categories, with a clear prevalence of synergies over trade-offs. The proposed framework supports the data-driven, spatially explicit evaluation of design alternatives and can guide decision-making in historical park restoration. Full article
