Background/Objectives: this study describes the development of a novel three-dimensional electrogoniometer for the quantitative assessment of knee mobility and stability during gait. The primary objective is to determine whether real-time measurements obtained during dynamic activity provide more clinically relevant information than traditional static assessments. Methods: the device employs angular position encoders to capture knee joint kinematics—specifically flexion, extension, rotation, and tibial translation—during locomotion. Data are transmitted in real time to an Android-based application, enabling immediate graphical visualization. A descriptive observational study was conducted involving healthy participants and individuals with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries to evaluate the device’s performance. Results: results showed that the electrogoniometer captured knee flexion-extension with a range of up to 90°, compared to 45° typically recorded using conventional systems. The device also demonstrated enhanced sensitivity in detecting variations in tibial translation during gait cycles. Conclusions: this electrogoniometer provides a practical tool for clinical assessment of knee function, enabling real-time monitoring of joint behavior during gait. By capturing functional mobility and stability more accurately than static methods, it may enhance diagnostic precision and support more effective rehabilitation planning in orthopedic settings. Background: During the global outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) ranked second in terms of the highest rate of confirmed cases among the Arab Gulf countries. This situation significantly impacted its population, economy, and healthcare system, especially the psychological well-being of frontline healthcare workers, including frontline nurses. However, there is lack of studies on this topic, particularly on the experiences of frontline expatriate nurses in the KSA, necessitating the utilization of descriptive phenomenological design. Objective: This study aimed to explore the experiences of frontline expatriate nurses and their influence on psychological well-being while delivering care to patients with COVID-19. Methods: The study employed a qualitative, descriptive phenomenological design that adhered to the key features of Husserl’s phenomenological approach and purposive sampling to select 17 frontline expatriate nurses. They participated in face-to-face semi-structured interviews. Prior to the 17 semi-structured interviews, written consent was obtained from each of the frontline expatriate nurses. The qualitative data collected were analyzed through thematic analysis and rigor was ensured in this qualitative investigation. Results: Two primary themes were identified from the interviews: (1) psychological effects due to fear of contracting the corona virus, which included two sub-themes pertaining to organizational stressors resulting in having anxiety, depression, fear, mental stress, and stigmatization; and (2) resilience to cope with the challenges brought by the pandemic, which was characterized by three sub-themes focusing on the importance of accurate information, presence of family and social support, and maintaining good health. The expatriate status of frontline nurses is a key factor influencing in their psychological well-being and resilience. Conclusions: Findings indicated that the psychological well-being of frontline expatriate nurses was adversely affected during the pandemic while caring for COVID-19 patients. Consequently, targeted interventions aimed at alleviating the negative psychological impacts of the pandemic are urgently needed to bolster the resilience of frontline expatriate nurses in emergency situations such as the COVID-19 crisis to cope with the associated psychological challenges during the peak of the pandemic, particularly among expatriate nurses. As a type of electrochemical energy storage, the vanadium redox flow battery system (VRFB) is currently one of the most promising large-scale energy storage methods. Nevertheless, the ability to accurately estimate the state of charge (SOC) is one of the critical factors restricting the commercialization of VRFBs. This review summarizes the estimation methods for the SOCs of VRFBs used by scholars in the past 10 years, comprehensively discusses the main factors affecting the accuracy of SOC estimation, and discusses the direct measurement methods, combined with modeling filter estimation methods and data-driven SOC estimation approaches currently investigated by mainstream scholars. Although several recent literature reviews describe the current modeling and estimation methods for VRFBs, there has been relatively little attention paid to the more common equivalent circuit modeling methods and parameter identification approaches. This review mainly focuses on common equivalent circuit model (ECM) modeling methods and filter estimation algorithms using modeling, and it summarizes their advantages and disadvantages. Finally, a description of potential research directions for VRFB modeling and SOC estimation in the future is presented. Full article

Introduction: Eliminating mother-to-child transmission (EMTCT) of HIV is a global health priority to ensure that no child is born with HIV. When EMTCT services are underutilized, mothers and babies face greater risks, including the vertical transmission of HIV and higher rates of maternal and neonatal mortality. Despite ongoing efforts, many women worldwide still struggle to access and use these vital services. Objective: This study sought to explore barriers and facilitators to the elimination of mother-to-child transmission services among pregnant and breastfeeding women (PBFW) in Gauteng province, South Africa. Methods: A qualitative, explorative, and descriptive research design was used. Convenience and purposive sampling were used to select participants. The study population consisted of PBFW aged 18 years or above who were utilizing EMTCT services. Data was collected through in-depth face-to-face individual interviews with participants. A semi-structured interview guide was used to collect data until data saturation was reached after interviewing 25 participants. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis (Tesch’s open coding method). Trustworthiness and ethical principles were ensured. Results: Four main themes emerged from the data analyzed, namely, barriers associated with EMTCT service utilization, facility-based strategies to improve EMTCT service uptake, community support for enhancing EMTCT engagement, and the role of partner support in service utilization, each with linked sub-themes. This study found that health education about EMTCT, along with community awareness and involvement, encourages the target group to utilize these services. Conclusions: Increasing women’s use of EMTCT services is an important step toward eliminating MTCT and increasing the health and well-being of mothers and their children. Addressing numerous barriers to receiving these services, as well as implementing targeted measures, can help ensure that all women gain access to the care and support that they require to safeguard their families from HIV. Young people under the care of child protection agencies are at increased risk of entering the criminal justice system. Residential youth organisations support young people who are unable to reside with their families or in foster care. Youth workers in these environments ensure the safety and wellbeing of young people in their care, consequently supporting the wellbeing of the overall community. This research explored the views and experiences of Queensland residential youth workers via a focus group interview. The data captured a thick description of service delivery practices. Constructivist Grounded Theory was used to conceptualise a theoretical framework based on the various empirical realities of participants. The findings highlight occasions where complex power dynamics had damaging consequences for youth workers and young people. Participants explored systemic constraints and structural inequalities, thus detailing the implications of top-down organisational structures on their service delivery, safety, and outcomes for young people. Participants were concerned about the implications of interrupted attachment and young people’s progression into crime. Practice recommendations centre around improving the disconnection between front-line realities and systemic hierarchies. Residential out-of-home care service delivery should focus on building community connection and belonging; mental, emotional and physical safety; collaborative care; and support. Full article

Bioactive peptides have significant potential for applications in pharmaceuticals, the food industry, and cosmetics due to their wide spectrum of biological activities. However, their pronounced structural and functional heterogeneity complicates the classification and prediction of biological activity. This study uses data from the PepLab platform, comprising 2748 experimentally confirmed bioactive peptides distributed across 15 functional classes, including ACE inhibitors, antimicrobial, anticancer, antioxidant, toxins, and others. For each peptide, the amino acid sequence and key physicochemical descriptors are provided, calculated via the integrated DMPep module, such as GRAVY index, aliphatic index, isoelectric point, molecular weight, Boman index, and sequence length. The dataset exhibits class imbalance, with class sizes ranging from 14 to 524 peptides. An innovative methodology is proposed, combining descriptive statistical analysis, structural modeling via DEMATEL, and structural equation modeling with neural networks (SEM-NN), where SEM-NN is used to capture complex nonlinear causal relationships between descriptors and functional classes. The results of these dependencies are integrated into a multi-class machine learning model to improve interpretability and predictive performance. Targeted data augmentation was applied to mitigate class imbalance. The developed classifier achieved predictive accuracy of up to 66%, a relatively high value given the complexity of the problem and the limited dataset size. These results confirm that integrating structured dependency modeling with artificial intelligence is an effective approach for functional peptide classification and supports the rational design of novel bioactive molecules. Because of their potential to enhance pathways for diagnosis and treatment, a great deal of research has been conducted to identify brain biomarkers of mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety. Similarly, the investigation of the biomarkers of those protective factors that help individuals resist, or recover from, these mental illnesses is also directly relevant to clinical practice. One such protective factor is Psychological Resilience (PR) but relatively little is known about its neurobiological underpinnings. A literature search was conducted of electroencephalographic data and PR, revealing seven studies that reported brain electrical activity categorised into bands of specified frequencies. Several studies reported significant associations between PR and alpha band activity, and somewhat less on beta band activity, principally via their roles in emotion regulation and problem solving. However, despite having a major role in many aspects of cognition and brain function, and being implicated in depression, only two studies examined gamma band activity specifically, and their results were equivocal. Several possible reasons for these apparently null results of the association between gamma band activity and PR are discussed, leading to a brief description of gamma, and suggestions for future research into its association with PR. In Italy, several changes to academic and professional standards and rules in kinesiology and sport have recently occurred. On the university side, no data collection has started regarding these changes and effects on specific scholars. The aim of this study was to evaluate the opinions of Italian university scholars in Exercise and Sport Sciences regarding recent disciplinary reclassifications, the emergence of the kinesiologist as a formal profession, and related curricular updates. Specifically, this study aimed to measure scholars’ views on the usefulness of unification, hybridization with other fields of knowledge, interdisciplinarity with pedagogy, the distinctiveness of undergraduate education in light of the new kinesiologist profile, and the inclusion of Technical and Laboratory Activities (TLA) credited through the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). These aspects were explored through an eight-question survey offering three multiple-choice answers. An exploratory survey was distributed to a defined population of 261 Italian scholars (48 full professors, 137 associate professors, and 76 researchers). A total of 83 responses were collected: 14 full professors, 45 associate professors, and 24 researchers (response rate: 31.8%). Descriptive statistics and inferential analyses (Chi-Square tests, Cramér’s V, and Pearson/Spearman correlations) were conducted. Results indicated that 72.3% perceived overlap between pedagogical and medical disciplinary groups, and 85.5% considered practical/laboratory activities essential to the kinesiologist’s role. Significant differences in keyword-sharing perceptions across academic ranks emerged (p = 0.012; V = 0.3), and a near-significant trend was found regarding the importance of discipline-aligned research (p = 0.058; V = 0.3). Full agreement was found on the use of updated scientific evidence in lectures (100%), and 81.9% supported standardized education for the kinesiologist profession (Q6). Positive correlations were observed between support for keyword sharing and belief in its usefulness for promoting interdisciplinarity among full professors (r = 0.58, p = 0.02), associate professors (r = 0.68, p < 0.01), and researchers (r = 0.83, p < 0.01). Conversely, negative correlations emerged between the importance placed on practical activities and support for interdisciplinarity among associate professors and researchers, with values ranging from r = −0.31 to −0.46. The results are significant and tended toward autonomy from pedagogy, training aligned with the bachelor’s and master’s degree kinesiologist, and interdisciplinarity inherent in typical Exercise and Sport Sciences (ESS) keywords. This study should be replicated to increase the sample and to expand the ad hoc questionnaire to other issues. These findings highlight the need for greater alignment between academic training, disciplinary definitions, and professional practice through shared epistemological frameworks and updated descriptors that reflect scientific and labor market developments. Although Ethiopia has an enormous agroecological potential for beekeeping, only 10% of it is realized. As its conventional smallholder production calls for improvement in market relationships, this paper aims at an in-depth analysis of the honey value chain, value share distribution, and leverages for improvement. Questionnaires, focus group discussions, and key informant interviews were used to collect data. Descriptive statistics, value chain mapping, and margin analysis were used for analysis. The main honey value chain actors were input suppliers, producers (beekeepers), collectors, wholesalers, processors, cooperatives, unions, retailers, and consumers. Agricultural offices, research centers, trade and market development offices, financial institutions, and NGOs are major supporters. The value share of beekeepers using traditional hives is still low, while the largest share goes to improved hive users and wholesalers, respectively. Weak market linkages, high costs and shortage of modern equipment, limited access to credit, lack of legal frameworks and standardized laboratories, absconding, pest infestation, and unsafe use of agrochemicals were the major challenges. Nevertheless, attractive investment policy, global market demand, low capital requirements, and support from NGOs were key opportunities. Improving access to better market, finance and modern inputs, capacity building, legal reform, and a standardized laboratory would help to support the honey value chain and its contribution. Artifact style is still assessed primarily visually/descriptively, and much less morphologically/parametrically—by processing latent geometric peculiarities. This research aims to explore how the morphology of artifacts can be represented and quantitatively compared in order to validate their stylistic affiliation cost-efficiently. Since the term “style” herein refers to orders of classical architecture, (Roman) capitals of the oldest, Doric order, were chosen for such a validation-oriented assessment. The methodology included the following: (1) scaling capital 3D models to a uniform height to make the number of equidistant crosscuts invariant, (2) substituting contours thereof with circles (by retaining area values) to marginalize ornamentation factors, (3) determining stepwise dynamics of perimeter change across circles to ensure relative comparisons, (4) generating diagrammatic representatives by revolving dynamics-wise trendlines, and (5) comparing them quantitatively. To make the latter valid in a statistical sense, three groups of capitals were foreseen: Control (of indisputable Doric), 1st Experimental (of assumed Doric), and 2nd Experimental (of non-Doric, i.e., Ionic). Distances between the vertices of every compared representative (from defined groups) and their nearest neighbors on the reference (a representative obtained by “averaging” control ones) were computed. Distributions of such distances induced normal probabilities capable of “inferring” whether the analyzed capital could likely be a member of the assumed order. Full article

Sarcocystis is a genus of heteroxenous, globally distributed coccidian parasites. Limited research has been conducted on the natural infection of Sarcocystis in rodents in the Middle East. In this study, the Libyan jird (Meriones libycus) was identified as the natural intermediate host of the new species Sarcocystis meriones, based on morphological and molecular data. Microscopic sarcocysts were detected in the thigh muscles of 8.5% (4/47) of Libyan jirds captured from a semi-desert area in Amghara, Eastern Kuwait. Under the light microscope, sarcocysts were filamentous with blunt ends and thin walls, measuring 1550 × 89 µm. Transmission electron microscopy analysis showed the densely packed protrusions measure 1.2 × 0.5 µm and resemble thuja or a cylinder and having lateral microvilli, while the ground substance layer was 0.5–0.6 µm thick and type 22-like. Based on four genetic loci (18S rRNA, 28S rRNA, ITS1, and cox1), S. meriones was genetically most similar to S. myodes and S. ratti, infecting voles and mice of the genus Apodemus and black rats (Rattus rattus), respectively. Phylogenetic results suggest predatory mammals as potential definitive hosts of S. meriones. Further studies are needed to reveal host specificity, geographical distribution, and the impact of the parasite on the host’s health of the newly described Sarcocystis species. Full article

Half of all Canadians will develop cancer at some point in their lifetimes. These rates have increased substantially over the last decade alongside increasing effectiveness and complexity of treatment options. Therefore, the need for patients to receive both an early diagnosis and ongoing care has never been so important. In Alberta, referrals to oncology specialty care have increased 18% in the last 7 years with no commensurate increase in the number of oncology health care professionals. Challenges with oncologic care access and provider recruitment are not unique to Alberta. In 2004, Cancer Care Alberta, specifically the Cross Cancer Institute (CCI), embarked on an initiative focusing on nurse practitioner (NP) care provision, aiming to address these gaps. The purpose of this article is a description of four distinct NP care models: the Assigned model, Consultative model, Partner model, and Most Responsible Provider (MRP model) significantly contributing to enhanced and expanded cancer care delivery at CCI. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to demonstrate how NPs can significantly address the rapidly expanding demands for specialist oncology care. This work highlights roles and exemplars of NP care to meet the evolving needs of cancer patients, the multidisciplinary care team and the health system. Full article

This paper presents a novel ontology-driven digital twin framework specifically designed for aviation maintenance and operations that addresses these challenges through semantic reasoning and explainable decision support. The proposed framework integrates seven interconnected ontologies—structural, functional, behavioral, monitoring, maintenance, lifecycle, and environmental. It collectively provides a comprehensive semantic representation of aircraft systems and their operational context. Each ontology is mathematically formalized using description logics and graph theory, creating a unified knowledge graph that enables transparent, traceable reasoning from sensor observations to maintenance decisions. The digital twin is formally defined as a 6-tuple that incorporates semantic transformation engines, cross-ontology mappings, and dynamic reasoning mechanisms. Unlike traditional data-driven approaches that operate as black boxes, the ontology-driven framework provides explainable inference capabilities essential for regulatory compliance and safety certification in aviation. The semantic foundation enables causal reasoning, rule-based validation, and context-aware maintenance recommendations while supporting standardization and interoperability across manufacturers, airlines, and regulatory bodies. The research contributes a mathematically grounded, semantically transparent framework that bridges the gap between domain knowledge and operational data in aviation maintenance. This work establishes the foundation for next-generation cognitive maintenance systems that can support intelligent, adaptive, and trustworthy operations in modern aviation ecosystems. Full article

Determinants of Diabetes-Related Quality of Life in Saudi Arabia: A Nationwide Survey-Based Assessment of Demographic, Health, and Complication-Related Influences

Background and Objectives: Diabetes affects quality of life (QoL) in physical, psychological, and social aspects. With high prevalence rates in Saudi Arabia, this study aimed to assess QoL in adults with diabetes across different regions and identify associated factors, addressing research gaps on complications and demographic influences. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study recruited adults diagnosed with diabetes from all regions of Saudi Arabia through phone interviews and the distribution of self-administered questionnaires via social media platforms. Data on demographics, health behaviors, diabetes-related complications, comorbidities, and diabetes management were collected. QoL was assessed using the Diabetic Quality of Life (DQoL) tool. Statistical analysis included descriptive statistics and multivariate regression, with significance set at p < 0.05. Results: Among the 527 individuals with diabetes, 57.7% were married, 56.1% were female, 93.7% lived in urban areas, and 37.2% had at least a bachelor’s degree. Common comorbidities included hypertension (29.2%) and hypercholesterolemia (22.8%). Physical activity and healthy weight were linked to improved DQoL. Diabetic complications, such as neuropathy (6.6%) and diabetic foot (4.9%), were significantly associated with lower DQoL scores. Depression was reported in 4.7% of participants and was the strongest predictor of poor QoL (β = −2.01, p < 0.001). Furthermore, individuals who exercised less than five times per week had significantly lower QoL scores (beta = −1.83; 95% CI = −2.56 to −1.10; p-value < 0.001). Conclusions: The study highlights the significant impact of education, health behaviors, diabetes complications, and comorbid depression on QoL. Comprehensive diabetes care that addresses both physical and psychological factors is essential for achieving improved outcomes. Full article
