Background/Objectives: Uncorrected refractive errors (UREs) are a primary cause of preventable visual impairment in children globally, impacting education and quality of life. In Jakarta, prevalence has surged to 40% post-pandemic, categorizing it as a serious public health problem. This study aimed to develop and validate the CIPSEL questionnaire as a rapid, culturally adapted screening tool for identifying visual impairment consistent with possible UREs among Indonesian school-aged children. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in South Jakarta with 131 students aged 8–12 years. The 10-item CIPSEL questionnaire, exploring visual behaviors and symptoms, was administered via face-to-face interviews. Visual acuity was assessed using a standard Snellen chart by medical personnel blinded to the questionnaire results. Diagnostic accuracy was assessed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, with optimal thresholds determined via the Youden Index and the shortest distance to (0, 1). Results: Visual impairment was identified in 26 students (19.8%). Mean CIPSEL scores were significantly higher in students with visual impairment (4.73) compared to those with normal vision (1.95). ROC analysis showed considerable diagnostic accuracy with an AUC of 0.887 (95% CI: 0.829–0.946). A safety-first cutoff of 2.5 prioritized sensitivity (96.2%), while a balanced cutoff of 3.5 provided 80.8% sensitivity and 79.0% specificity. A tiered risk system (Low, Medium, and High) demonstrated a robust statistical association with actual clinical findings (Cramer’s V = 0.534, p < 0.001). Conclusions: CIPSEL is a reliable and scalable screening tool for the early detection of visual impairment in Indonesian children. Its tiered risk stratification framework facilitates nuanced clinical decision-making and efficient resource allocation in school-based settings. Its accessibility for non-medical personnel and potential for digital integration support national efforts toward universal eye health. Full article

While the digital transformation is predominantly framed as a catalyst for efficiency, the structural shifts induced by digitalization seem to generate a hidden erosion of working conditions that challenges the broader vision of sustainable work. Focusing on four Central European countries, this research explores how contemporary labor environments conceal declines in job quality. Drawing on original survey data, the study identifies several critical sources of this deterioration, including uncompensated workload expansion, the erosion of the right to disconnect, and the increasing pressure of digital presenteeism. The analysis reveals that these hidden shifts are most prevalent among workers in remote or hybrid models, as well as those in the first decade of their professional careers. Younger workers appear especially vulnerable to the blurring of work–life boundaries and the compulsion to maintain availability during illness. The research questions were addressed using appropriate statistical tests and by constructing working conditions due to digitalization index (WCDI). These findings point toward a need for a broader understanding of how digital transformation impacts the sustainability of work in practice. Full article

Background: Malnutrition and suboptimal diet quality are common, yet under-recognized, in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and are associated with worse clinical outcomes and lower quality of life. Digital tools may facilitate continuous, personalized nutritional support, but evidence in IBD remains limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of a nutritional intervention based on a mobile application (Nootric®) on nutritional status, diet quality, and malnutrition risk in patients with IBD undergoing stable follow-up. Methods: We conducted a prospective longitudinal cohort study without a control group including 151 adult patients with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis under stable follow-up in a tertiary IBD unit. Participants used a structured digital nutritional support program through the Nootric® app for 24 weeks, supervised by dietitians and the IBD team. Clinical activity, biochemical markers (C-reactive protein, fecal calprotectin), nutritional biomarkers (albumin, prealbumin, micronutrients), body mass index (BMI), malnutrition risk (self-administered Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool, MUST), and diet quality (PREDIMED and an expanded “Nootric score”) were assessed at baseline, 12 weeks, and 24 weeks. Analyses focused on patients with adequate adherence. Results: Of the 151 included IBD patients, 110 maintained stable app use. Mean albumin increased from 4.38 to 4.49 g/dL at 24 weeks (p = 0.003), and prealbumin from 24.9 to 26.1 mg/dL (p = 0.047), despite the absence of overt protein–calorie malnutrition at baseline. Patients with obesity achieved a mean weight loss of approximately 6% of baseline body weight. Diet quality improved significantly, with higher Nootric score and a positive correlation between app use intensity and increased score. Malnutrition risk according to the MUST scale improved in more adherent patients, while clinical and biochemical disease activity remained stable overall. Conclusions: A mobile app-based nutritional program supervised by dietitians was feasible, well accepted, and associated with improved nutritional markers, diet quality, and malnutrition risk, supporting its role as a complementary component of IBD care. Background/Objectives: Digital environments have intensified exposure to interpersonal stressors and appearance-related evaluation, raising concerns about cyberbullying and problematic internet use among women with eating disorders (EDs). This study examined whether cyberbullying exposure and problematic online use are associated with health-related quality of life in women receiving specialized outpatient care for eating disorders in Spain. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of baseline data collected between 2018 and 2019 from a clinical cohort of 124 women in specialized ED treatment. ED symptoms were assessed using the SCOFF and the Bulimic Investigatory Test, Edinburgh (BITE). Problematic online use was measured with the Internet Addiction Test (IAT) and the Bergen Facebook Addiction Scale (BFAS), and cyberbullying exposure was summarized using a composite index. HRQoL was assessed with the EQ-5D index and visual analogue scale (EQ-VAS). Associations were examined using correlation analyses, group comparisons, and exploratory multiple linear regression models adjusting for age, body mass index (BMI), diagnosis, and comorbidity. Results: Cyberbullying exposure was strongly positively correlated with problematic internet and social media use (IAT and BFAS). Its bivariate associations with ED symptom measures were small and not statistically significant. Participants with physical or mental health comorbidities reported lower HRQoL on both the EQ-5D index and EQ-VAS scores (p < 0.01). In the exploratory adjusted regression model predicting EQ-5D, coefficients for cyberbullying exposure, IAT, and BITE severity were small and imprecisely estimated, whereas diagnosis category showed between-group differences (with the “other ED” category reporting lower EQ-5D scores relative to the reference group). The overall model explained approximately 26.7% of the variance in EQ-5D (adjusted R2 = 0.22). Conclusions: In this clinical sample, digital-use measures co-occurred strongly with one another, and comorbidity was associated with poorer HRQoL at the bivariate level. In exploratory adjusted models, estimated associations of cyberbullying and problematic online use with HRQoL were imprecise, supporting cautious interpretation. Prospective and intervention studies are needed to determine whether digital interpersonal stressors contribute to HRQoL trajectories in women receiving specialized ED care and whether targeting these stressors improves patient-reported outcomes. Background/Objectives: Cognitive impairment and sleep disturbances are highly prevalent in individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS), particularly during middle age, and negatively affect functional independence and quality of life. Although physical exercise has demonstrated cognitive and sleep-related benefits in MS, tolerance to high-intensity training is often limited. Blood flow restriction (BFR) training, which combines low-load resistance exercise with partial vascular occlusion, has emerged as a feasible alternative. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a 12-week BFR training program on performance in specific cognitive domains and sleep quality in middle-aged adults with MS. Methods: A randomized controlled trial was conducted in 65 adults with relapsing–remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) aged 40–65 years and an Expanded Disability Status Scale score below 7. Participants were randomly assigned to a BFR training group or a usual-care control group. The intervention consisted of supervised low-load resistance training with BFR performed twice weekly for 12 weeks. Outcomes assessed before and after the intervention included processing speed (Symbol Digit Modalities Test), executive function (Trail Making Test A and B), verbal fluency (Isaacs Set Test), and self-reported sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index). Results: Compared with controls, participants in the BFR group showed significant improvements in specific cognitive domains, including processing speed, executive function, and verbal fluency. Significant reductions were also observed in self-reported global sleep disturbance and daytime dysfunction. No adverse events were reported. Conclusions: A 12-week BFR training program improved performance in key cognitive domains and self-reported sleep quality in middle-aged adults with MS, supporting its feasibility and potential clinical relevance as an exercise-based intervention. Chronic low-grade inflammation, or “inflammaging,” represents a central mechanism linking dietary patterns, gut microbiome composition, and biological aging. Evidence from Blue Zone populations and Mediterranean diet studies demonstrates that specific nutritional interventions are associated with up to 23% lower all-cause mortality, with analyses suggesting that part of this association may be mediated by measurable improvements in inflammatory biomarkers. This paper synthesizes published evidence from Mediterranean diet trials, centenarian microbiome studies, and digital health platforms to propose a comprehensive digital health framework that integrates quarterly inflammation and microbiome monitoring with continuous lifestyle tracking to deliver personalized longevity interventions. This paper introduces the Longevity-Inflammation Index (L-II), a composite score combining high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and microbiome-derived markers, with scoring algorithms derived from centenarian population studies. The proposed platform leverages artificial intelligence to generate evidence-based recommendations adapted from centenarian and Mediterranean dietary patterns. Published evidence from multiple randomized controlled trials demonstrates that Mediterranean dietary interventions reduce hs-CRP by 18–32%, increase microbiome diversity by 6–28%, and improve metabolic markers including HOMA-IR and TG/HDL ratios. Digital health platforms demonstrate sustained engagement rates of 58–84% at 12 months, with dietary logging frequencies of 4–6 days per week. Cost-effectiveness analyses of dietary interventions show incremental cost-effectiveness ratios of USD 2100–4800 per quality-adjusted life year gained. This inflammation-centered digital health framework offers a scalable approach for translating longevity research into practical interventions for healthy aging, with validation studies needed to confirm the integrated platform’s efficacy and real-world implementation feasibility. Background/Objectives: Hearing impairment in middle-aged adults is a significant, modifiable risk factor for cognitive decline and dementia, and therapy with hearing aids or cochlear implants has been suggested to reduce this risk. However, most research on auditory rehabilitation and cognition has focused on older adults, and evidence regarding cognitive outcomes in middle-aged adults remains scarce despite this group being identified as critical for dementia prevention. Thus, this study aimed to assess cognitive skills in middle-aged hearing-impaired individuals 1 year after receiving a cochlear implant (CI) as part of auditory rehabilitation. Methods: Thirty-two patients with a mean age of 52.4 were enrolled in a prospective pre-post study. Hearing was tested using the Freiburg Monosyllable Test (FS) and the Oldenburg Inventory (OI). Cognitive performance was assessed using the WAIS-IV, operationalized through the Working Memory Index (Digit Span, Arithmetic) and Processing Speed Index (Symbol Search, Coding). Quality of life was assessed with the NCIQ, tinnitus-related distress with the Tinnitus Questionnaire (TQ), and depressive symptoms with the ADS-L. Results: After one year, speech intelligibility (FS) improved from a median of 0 to 70.0 (Wilcoxon Z = −4.864, p < 0.001, r = −0.61), and subjective hearing from a median of 2.55 to 3.18 (Wilcoxon Z = −3.072, p = 0.002). The NCIQ score increased from 52.3 to 60.6 (Z = −3.899, p < 0.001), and tinnitus-related distress decreased from 25 to 21 (Wilcoxon Z = −2.209, p = 0.027). Depressive symptoms declined numerically, although this change did not reach statistical significance. Working memory improved from 82.0 to 89.0 (Wilcoxon Z = −4.090, p < 0.001), and processing speed from 89.5 to 95.5 (Wilcoxon Z = −2.533, p = 0.011). Before CI, WMI and PSI showed a strong correlation (ρ = 0.533, p = 0.002), and WMI correlated moderately with education level (ρ = 0.452, p = 0.012). One year after CI, correlations strengthened between PSI and NCIQ (ρ = 0.510, p = 0.006), PSI and OI (ρ = 0.400, p = 0.039), and WMI and TQ (ρ = –0.459, p = 0.021), indicating emerging associations between cognitive outcomes and auditory or psychosocial measures. Conclusions: One year of CI-based auditory rehabilitation improves auditory function, quality of life, tinnitus distress, and—critically—working memory and processing speed in middle-aged adults. These findings address a previously unfilled research gap and support the relevance of CIs for preserving cognitive health during midlife. Full article

Increasing the level of livability in cities is a topical area both in EU policies and in local urban development, as well as in scientific studies. The aim of this article is to assess the degree if livability of the large housing estates (LHEs) built during the socialist period in the main regional cities of Romania and how adequately they meet the requirements of current urban life. The research focused on assessing the accessibility of these neighborhoods to green spaces and other types of public facilities and services of interest, also taking into account the typology of LHEs. For this, we used mixed research methods, namely GIS remote sensing, fieldwork, and questionnaire surveys, with the results being digitally processed and mapped. This comparative research allowed us to see to what extent each type of neighborhood lends itself to the application of the European Green Deal principles (EGD). In this sense, we mapped the transformations undergone by urban green spaces, as a major dimension of sustainability, and we created an LHE accessibility index, using eight groups of indicators. Based on this index, we assessed the degree of livability and the compatibility of LHEs with some of the EGD principles. We believe that this study can be applied in other regions with similar characteristics, for the analysis of territorial accessibility of public services, in the creation of quality of life registers, or for the planning of spatial components of green cities. Stroke survivors frequently experience long-term disability, post-stroke fatigue, frailty, sarcopenia, falls, and psychosocial distress, which together drive poorer functional recovery, rehospitalization, institutionalization, and caregiver burden. This narrative review synthesizes contemporary evidence on the prevalence, mechanisms, and clinical impact of post-stroke fatigue, frailty, sarcopenia, and falls and examines their links with palliative care needs, healthcare costs, and emerging telehealth models. A PubMed and Google Scholar search up to October 2025 identified studies on stroke and fatigue, frailty, sarcopenia, falls, palliative care, and telehealth, with an emphasis on clinical studies, trials, systematic reviews, and guidelines in adults. Frailty and sarcopenia are highly prevalent after stroke and predict mortality, poor functional outcome, reduced rehabilitation response, and higher care needs. Post-stroke fatigue is common, multifactorial, and associated with worse quality of life and reduced return-to-work rates. Falls are frequent and arise from the combined effects of focal neurological deficits and systemic frailty/sarcopenia. Despite substantial symptom burden, palliative care is often introduced late and inconsistently. We summarize brief, validated screening tools, such as the Clinical Frailty Scale, SARC-F plus grip strength, Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool, Fatigue Severity Scale/Neurological Fatigue Index for Stroke, Short Physical Performance Battery, and fall-risk instruments. We propose pragmatic timepoints and referral thresholds for their use in stroke services. Multicomponent interventions that integrate exercise, nutritional optimization, psychosocial support, and structured fall prevention can reduce frailty, sarcopenia, and falls and improve function and mood. Telemedicine and telerehabilitation may enhance access and continuity but risk widening digital inequities. Earlier, structured palliative approaches aligned with patient goals are needed across the frailty–sarcopenia–stroke continuum. Implementing integrated screening–intervention pathways and hybrid telehealth models could improve long-term outcomes for stroke survivors and their caregivers while supporting more efficient use of healthcare resources. Background: This study examined the relationship between screen time, body image satisfaction, body mass index (BMI), and quality of life among children and adolescents from two school clusters in Sesimbra, Portugal. Methods: The sample included 80 students aged 10 to 18 years, assessed using validated questionnaires (Collins’ Figure Rating Scale and KIDSCREEN-27). Results: Results indicated sex differences in electronic game use, with boys reporting higher usage. A negative association was found between time spent on social networks and perceived autonomy and parent–child relationship quality. A high prevalence of body image dissatisfaction was found, particularly among boys, which was significantly associated with BMI. Regarding quality of life, participants scored lower than the European average in the domains of physical and psychological well-being. Conclusions: Findings suggest that screen time, body image, and BMI interdependently affect quality of life, underscoring the need to promote digital literacy, self-esteem, body acceptance, and healthy lifestyles in both school and family settings. Abstract
This study investigates the relationship between digital well-being and psychological well-being among undergraduate students enrolled in technical academic programs at a Romanian university. This study investigates the relationship between digital well-being and psychological well-being among undergraduate students enrolled in technical academic programs at a Romanian university. Emphasizing the impact of academic digital technology use, digital autonomy, work–life balance, and the quality of online interactions, the research addresses the increasing digitalization in higher education and its implications for students’ mental and emotional health. A purposive sample of 208 students from Electronics, Telecommunications, Automation, Computer Science, and Engineering in Foreign Languages programs was surveyed using validated instruments, including a Digital Well-Being Questionnaire, Ryff’s Psychological Well-Being Scale, and the WHO-5 Well-Being Index. A mix of descriptive and inferential statistics was employed to comprehensively explore the associations between digital well-being and psychological outcomes. The findings highlight significant associations between digital engagement patterns and both psychological and subjective well-being, with notable differences influenced by sociodemographic factors such as gender. This study contributes to the emerging field of digital well-being in academic contexts by providing data-driven insights that can inform institutional strategies to support student health and optimize digital learning environments. Background/Objectives: Colorectal cancer (CRC) ranks third in the Western world in cancer incidence and second as the cause of cancer-related deaths. Despite advances in perioperative care, minimizing postoperative morbidity is crucial in clinical practice. Digitalization of the healthcare process plays a key role in genuinely and effectively engaging patients. Our aim was to evaluate a digital solution for remote monitoring of patients with CRC, from surgery indication to postoperative discharge. Methods: We developed a digital solution using Value Stream Mapping (VSM) to identify patient care flow and Lean Sigma for optimization and efficiency. We incorporated the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS)/RICA pentamodal recommendations to create a program with an individualized schedule for each patient, who received tailored educational, medical, and practical information at every stage of the process. Results: A total of 193 patients used the digital solution, with >75% adhering to ERAS recommendations. The median length of hospital stay was 5 days, with low adherence leading to 3.4 (p = 0.628) or 3.27 (p = 0.642) extra days in the hospital compared to patients with intermediate and high adherence, respectively. The mean comprehensive complication index (CCI) was 9.1/100, which was higher in patients with low adherence (15) versus intermediate (8.17; p = 0.027) and high (7.42; p = 0.011) adherence. An increase in self-perception of quality of life by 9.2% was identified at the end of the process compared to the outcome at the beginning (p = 0.09), and 80% rated their overall satisfaction with the care process as 8 or higher out of 10. Conclusions: The digital solution facilitates the monitoring of CRC care and implementation and adherence to ERAS recommendations, improving patient engagement and satisfaction. Full article

Short- and long-term hand function was evaluated in adult patients with deep dermal and full-thickness hand burns after treatment with enzymatic debridement (NexoBrid® MediWound Ltd., Yavne, Israel), assessing the results at discharge and 3, 6, and 12 months post-burn. This prospective cohort study was performed in the Burn Center in Beverwijk between March 2017 and December 2019. Hand function was assessed using Modified Kapandji Index scores, the Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test, and range of motion; scar quality using the Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale version 2.0; and quality of life using the Quick Disability Arm Shoulder Hand Questionnaire and the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure. Ten patients (14 hand burns) were included. The need for a skin graft after NexoBrid® was 86%, and 50% needed additional surgical excision before skin grafting. Digits 3 and 4 achieved near-to-normal total active motion, and at least 50% of the hands achieved a normal range within the Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test in four items at 12 months post-burn. Scar quality and quality of life improved significantly over time. The present study can be considered as a proof-of-concept study for future clinical trials on enzymatic debridement for hand burns. Background: This preliminary case series aimed to evaluate the clinical and morphometric outcomes of maxillomandibular advancement (MMA) surgery in patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) using virtual surgical planning (VSP), patient-specific cutting guides, and customized titanium plates. Primary outcomes included changes in the Apnea–Hypopnea Index (AHI), airway dimensions, surgical accuracy, and quality of life. Methods: In this preliminary case series, six patients with severe OSA underwent MMA surgery planned using three-dimensional VSP, and executed with the aid of CAD-/CAM-generated surgical guides and patient-specific osteosynthesis. Clinical variables included AHI, Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), and computed tomography-based airway morphometry. Surgical accuracy was assessed by comparing planned and achieved skeletal movements. Statistical analysis was performed using Wilcoxon signed-rank tests and Spearman’s correlation. Results: The mean preoperative AHI decreased significantly from 48.8 ± 23.6 to 12.4 ± 10.0 (p = 0.035), and ESS scores improved from 14.5 ± 4.6 to 7.8 ± 2.1 (p = 0.029). Mean airway area increased significantly from 51.8 ± 9.0 mm2 to 91.8 ± 26.6 mm2 (p = 0.035). A strong but non-significant correlation was observed between airway gain and ESS improvement (p = 0.754, p = 0.084). No patients required CPAP at 6-month follow-up, and all were asymptomatic. The anteroposterior accuracy of skeletal movements was high: 82.6% for the maxilla and 85.8% for the pogonion, with mean absolute errors of 1.25 mm and 1.95 mm, respectively. Vertical accuracy was lower, particularly in the chin region, where error analysis showed greater variability. No statistically significant differences were found between planned and achieved movements in any vector. Conclusions: MMA surgery performed with VSP, cutting guides, and customized titanium plates offers a highly effective, safe, and precise treatment modality for selected OSA patients. This approach leads to a significant reduction in AHI, expansion of the upper airway, and improvement in patient-reported daytime functioning. High accuracy in skeletal repositioning—particularly in anteroposterior vectors—supports the reliability and reproducibility of digitally guided orthognathic surgery. These findings reinforce the role of technologically assisted MMA as a definitive treatment for severe OSA. Full article

This article presents an innovative methodology for enhancing statistical databases as reliable sources of information. The study leverages data from “Big Data of the Modern Global Economy: A Digital Platform for Data Mining—2020”, which serves as a digital tool designed to predict economic development at both global and national levels, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 crisis and its aftermath. Utilizing a dataset focused on the G7 and BRICS nations as a case study, we assemble forecasts for several key indicators: the Digital Competitiveness Index, Global Innovation Index, Human Development Index, Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Economic Growth Rate, GDP per Capita, Quality of Life Index, Happiness Index, and Sustainable Development Index for 2021. Additionally, we conducted a plan-fact analysis. The accuracy of the post-pandemic economic recovery forecast is validated through comparison with actual data. Furthermore, this research provides statistical analyses and forecasts to minimize uncertainty during crises, considering the interconnected nature of climate change and financial factors inherent in these crises.
