Smallholder irrigation farmers play a vital role in sustaining rural communities in South Africa. However, the performance of smallholder irrigators, both as income generators and job creators, has come under scrutiny in recent years. In Limpopo province, a study was conducted in the Vhembe District using cross-sectional data from 95 independent and 165 public smallholder irrigators, which are privately established farmers and users of government-supported and managed irrigation systems, respectively. Qualitative data were collected through questionnaires, key informant interviews, and group discussions. Quantitative data were analyzed by SPSS version 30 using themes and codes, employing inferential statistical methods such as chi-square and t-tests to assess variables related to agrifood systems, crop selection, and market access. The study found that smallholders predominantly favor the production of grains, vegetables, and horticultural crops, with a statistically significant (p < 0.05) similarity between independent and public irrigators. Public irrigators dominate within irrigation schemes at 64% of the total, with X2 of 22.7 with 0.001 p-value. Amongst the groups, the income distribution shows a statistically significant difference in earnings between independent and public irrigators (χ2 = 25.83, p < 0.001). Informal and formal markets are accessible and available to 59% of independent irrigators, but 30% of public irrigators only access the informal market (p < 0.001). The major identified challenge across all smallholders is the lack of food value addition and commercial packaging. The study recommends the development of food value addition initiatives, adoption of climate-smart practices, maintenance of infrastructure, and improvement of market access to enhance productivity and sustainability. Local economic development (LED) strategies at the district level—such as sub-city or neighbourhood initiatives—play a crucial role in fostering sustainable and inclusive urban growth. This study explores the critical factors influencing LED and urban regeneration at the district scale, emphasising the integration of sustainability, digital technologies, inclusivity, energy efficiency, community engagement, and innovation into strategic planning. To prioritise these CFs, a tailored survey was distributed among a group of 13 city experts from European cities, involved in research projects focused on district-level quality-of-life enhancements through building retrofits, urban space interventions, energy community promotion, and technological deployment. By focusing on the district level, this research highlights the importance of tailoring strategies to local contexts and leveraging the unique characteristics of each neighbourhood. The findings reveal the need for local governments to enhance the capacity of administrative staff to engage citizens and direct external support for development projects. The normative recommendations derived from this study are specifically grounded in district-level research and practice, ensuring their applicability to sub-city areas. This paper concludes that a context-specific and collaborative approach is essential for achieving equitable and sustainable economic development at the district level. Full article

As bike-sharing systems become increasingly integral to sustainable urban mobility, understanding their economic viability requires moving beyond conventional linear models to capture complex operational dynamics. This study develops an interpretable analytical framework to uncover non-linear relationships governing bike-sharing economic performance in Xi’an, China, utilizing one-month operational data across 202 Transportation Analysis Zones (TAZs). Combining spatial analysis with explainable machine learning (XGBoost–SHAP), we systematically examine how operational factors and built environment characteristics interact to influence economic outcomes, achieving superior predictive performance (R2 = 0.847) compared to baseline linear regression models (R2 = 0.652). The SHAP-based interpretation reveals three key findings: (1) bike-sharing performance exhibits pronounced spatial heterogeneity that correlates strongly with urban functional patterns), with commercial districts and transit-adjacent areas demonstrating consistently higher economic returns. (2) Gradual positive relationships emerge across multiple factors—including bike supply density (maximum SHAP contribution +1.0), commercial POI distribution, and transit accessibility—with performance showing consistent but moderate improvements rather than dramatic threshold effects. (3) Significant interaction effects are quantified between key factors, with bike supply density and commercial POI density exhibiting strong synergistic relationships (interaction values 1.5–2.0), particularly in areas combining high commercial activity with good transit connectivity. The findings challenge simplistic linear assumptions in bike-sharing management while providing quantitative evidence for spatially differentiated strategies that account for moderate threshold behaviors and factor synergies. Cross-validation results (5-fold, R2 = 0.89 ± 0.018) confirm model robustness, while comprehensive performance metrics demonstrate substantial improvements over traditional approaches (35.1% RMSE reduction, 36.6% MAE improvement). The proposed framework offers urban planners a data-driven tool for evidence-based decision-making in sustainable mobility systems, with broader methodological applicability for similar urban contexts. Visual attractiveness perception—an individual’s capacity to recognise and evaluate the visual appeal of urban scene safety—has direct implications for well-being, economic vitality, and social cohesion. However, most empirical studies rely on single-source metrics or algorithm-centric pipelines that under-represent human perception. Addressing this gap, we introduce a fully reproducible, multimodal framework that measures and models this domain-specific facet of human intelligence by coupling Generative Pre-trained Transformer 4o (GPT-4o) with 1000 Street View images. The pipeline first elicits pairwise aesthetic judgements from GPT-4o, converts them into a latent attractiveness scale via Thurstone’s law of comparative judgement, and then validates the scale against 1.17 M crowdsourced ratings from MIT’s Place Pulse 2.0 benchmark (Spearman ρ = 0.76, p < 0.001). Compared with a Siamese CNN baseline (ρ = 0.60), GPT-4o yields both higher criterion validity and an 88% reduction in inference time, underscoring its superior capacity to approximate human evaluative reasoning. In this study, we introduce a standardised and reproducible streetscape evaluation pipeline using GPT-4o. We then combine the resulting attractiveness scores with network-based accessibility modelling to generate a “aesthetic–accessibility map” of urban central districts in Chongqing, China. Cluster analysis reveals four statistically distinct street types—Iconic Core, Liveable Rings, Transit-Rich but Bland, and Peripheral Low-Appeal—providing actionable insights for landscape design, urban governance, and tourism planning. The proximity of urban green spaces to residential areas has become a central principle in contemporary urban planning, with cities worldwide adopting “15-minute city” concepts that prioritize walking-distance access to parks. This study examined whether proximity to different types of parks influences park visitation, physical activity, and mental well-being in Bangkok, Thailand, where the government recently launched a 15-minute parks policy initiative to improve the proximity of urban residents to green spaces. Using a cross-sectional survey of 615 residents across Bangkok’s 50 districts, we measured proximity to six park types using GIS network analysis and assessed health outcomes through validated instruments (Global Physical Activity Questionnaire, GPAQ for physical activity GPAQ for physical activity, and WHO-5 for well-being). Our findings revealed that only proximity to community parks (5–20 ha) was significantly associated with park visitation, sufficient physical activity, and good well-being. Proximity to smaller parks, including the new 15-minute parks, pocket parks, and neighborhood parks, showed no significant associations with any health outcomes, despite being within walking distance. These results suggest a critical size threshold below which parks cannot generate health and well-being benefits in Bangkok’s environment. The findings challenge the argument commonly used in proximity-based green space policies that assume closer parks automatically improve park visitation and public health benefits, indicating that cities facing similar constraints should balance between providing small park networks and securing larger, functional parks to support meaningful recreational use or health improvements. Decades of unregulated zinc mining activities in the Mae Tao watershed, located in Mae Sot District, Tak Province, northern Thailand, have resulted in the pervasive contamination of agricultural soils with heavy metals, particularly cadmium (Cd), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), and manganese (Mn). This legacy pollution has significantly impacted multiple environmental compartments—including surface water, groundwater, and sediments—and poses chronic health risks to local populations. This study investigates the key geochemical and physicochemical factors governing the leachability and mobility of these metals from contaminated soils and evaluates the associated human health risks. Controlled leaching experiments demonstrated that ionic strength exerts a more pronounced influence on metal mobilization than pH or other tested variables, suggesting that the electrolyte composition of pore water plays a dominant role in heavy metal transport. Despite elevated total concentrations of Cd, Zn, Pb, and Mn in the soils, hazard quotient (HQ) calculations indicated no significant non-carcinogenic risk under typical exposure scenarios. However, Cd exhibited a carcinogenic risk above the acceptable threshold at both average and peak soil concentrations, underscoring its potential to adversely affect human health. These findings enhance the understanding of heavy metal behavior in contaminated agroecosystems and provide a scientific basis for targeted risk management and long-term monitoring strategies in the Mae Sot region. Both behavioral intentions and structural constraints shape household waste disposal in low-resource settings. This study integrates the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) with Environmental Justice (EJ) to examine informal waste disposal in Vhembe District, South Africa, a region marked by infrastructural deficits and uneven municipal services. A cross-sectional survey of 399 households across four municipalities assessed five disposal behaviors, including river dumping and domestic burial. Only 8% of households used formal bins, while over 50% engaged in open or roadside dumping. Although education and income were inversely associated with harmful practices, inadequate service access was the most significant constraint on formal disposal. Logistic regression revealed that rural residents and households in underserved municipalities were significantly more likely to engage in hazardous methods, regardless of socioeconomic status. These findings extend TPB by showing that perceived behavioral control reflects not only psychological agency but also material and institutional limitations. By reframing informal disposal as a structurally conditioned response rather than a behavioral deficit, the study advances EJ theory and provides a transferable TPB–EJ framework for decentralized, justice-oriented waste governance. The results underscore the need for Sustainable Development Goal (SDG)-aligned interventions that integrate equitable infrastructure with context-sensitive behavioral strategies. Full article

Gotland has been designated by the Swedish government as a pilot region for the transition to a sustainable, fossil-free energy system by 2030. This transformation emphasizes local renewable energy production and system independence. Within this context, this study investigates the role of industrial waste heat as a resource to improve energy efficiency and support sector integration between electricity, heating, and industry. A mixed-methods approach was used, combining techno-economic energy system modeling, life cycle assessment, spatial GIS data, and stakeholder input. The study develops and analyzes future carbon-neutral energy scenarios for Gotland’s energy system. Industrial waste heat can significantly reduce primary energy demand, particularly in scenarios with expanded industry, carbon capture, and increased sector integration—such as through district heating. In such cases, up to 3000–4000 GWh/year of low-temperature industrial residual heat becomes available, offering substantial potential to improve overall energy efficiency. The scenarios highlight synergies and trade-offs across environmental, economic, and social dimensions, emphasizing the importance of coordinated planning. Scenarios with offshore wind enable energy exports and industrial growth but raise challenges related to emissions and public acceptance, while scenarios without cement production reduce environmental impact but weaken local economic resilience. Limitations of the study include the exclusion of global supply chain impacts and assumptions about future technological costs. The study underscores the need for integrated planning, regulatory innovation, and stakeholder collaboration to ensure a just and resilient transition for Gotland. Full article

Intelligent manufacturing is the inevitable path for China to achieve its strategy of becoming a manufacturing power. Exploring how intelligent manufacturing policies can promote green innovation, which refers to promoting innovative technologies aimed at improving resource utilization efficiency, is of great significance for promoting the green transformation of enterprises. Based on the data of A-share listed enterprises from 2010 to 2023, this study regards the intelligent manufacturing demonstration project pilot as a quasi-natural experiment and explores its policy spillover effects and mechanism. The research findings indicate that the intelligent manufacturing policy can greatly improve firms’ green innovation, and non-state-owned and non-high-pollution enterprises are more sensitive to intelligent manufacturing policies. It has a significant spatial spillover effect in both the district and industry dimensions. In addition, the mechanism analysis indicates that alleviating enterprises’ financing constraints and environmental uncertainty are important ways to promote enterprises’ green innovation. This study empirically designs to fill the theoretical gap in the association between intelligent manufacturing policies and green innovation in the body of knowledge, and innovatively verifies the spatial spillover effect of intelligent manufacturing policies from both the district and industry dimensions. At the practical level, its conclusion provides an operational decision-making toolbox for multiple entities such as the government, enterprises, and financial institutions to jointly promote green transformation. Against the backdrop of coordinated development of national land use and ecological conservation, national key development zones (NKDZs), as the core carriers of China’s main functional zone planning, provide important reference models for regional development through their pathways to improving ecological efficiency of land. A double-difference model (DID) was used to evaluate the effects of the NKDZ policy on the eco-efficiency of land use, utilizing county-level governing bodies of the upper Yangtze River region in China as a sample from 2005 to 2020. The findings indicate that (1) when the NKDZs were established, the counties’ eco-efficiency in land use in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River considerably improved by 2.6%; this conclusion holds after several robustness checks, including counterfactual tests. (2) Mechanistic analysis reveals that NKDZs promote the enhancement of eco-efficiency in land use, mainly through the technical effect, the structural effect, and the “two processes” effect of promoting the coordinated development of industrialization and urbanization. (3) Heterogeneity analysis reveals that the policy effects on land-use eco-efficiency in municipal districts and cities at the county level are much greater than those in regular counties. Concerning subdistricts, the policy significantly promotes Sichuan, Guizhou, and Chongqing, whereas the effect on Yunnan is not significant. In light of the aforementioned findings, this study makes policy recommendations in terms of technological innovation, structural optimization, and differentiated land control to offer a practical foundation and theoretical justification for the effective use of land and ecological pressure alleviation within NKDZs. During the transition of culture-featured district planning from static conservation to innovation-driven models, existing research remains constrained by mechanistic paradigms, reducing districts to functional containers and neglecting human perceptual interactions and meaning-production mechanisms. This study explores and quantifies the generative mechanisms of spatial communicability and cultural dissemination efficacy within human-centered frameworks. Grounded in humanistic urbanism, we analyze Harbin Central Street as a case study integrating historical heritage with contemporary vitality, developing a tripartite communicability assessment framework comprising perceptual experience, infrastructure utility, and behavioral dynamics. Machine learning-based threshold analysis reveals that spatial encoding elements govern communicability through significant nonlinear mechanisms. The conclusion shows synergies between street view-quantified greenery visibility and pedestrian accessibility establish critical human-centered design thresholds. Spatial data analysis integrating physiologically sensed emotional experiences and topologically analyzed spatial morphology resolves metric fragmentation while examining spatial encoding’s impact on interaction efficacy. This research provides data-driven decision support for sustainable urban renewal and enhanced cultural dissemination, advancing heritage sustainability. Full article

Existing research predominantly focuses on the preservation or renewal models of the physical forms of historic cultural districts, with limited exploration of their roles in stimulating tourists’ cognitive, affective resonance, and behavioral interactions. This study addresses historic cultural districts by evaluating the space quality and its impact on tourist experiences through the “cognition-affect-behavior” framework, integrating GIS, street view semantic segmentation, VR eye-tracking, and web crawling technologies. The findings reveal significant multidimensional differences in how space quality influences tourist experiences: the impact intensities of functional diversity, sky visibility, road network accessibility, green visibility, interface openness, and public facility convenience decrease sequentially, with path coefficients of 0.261, 0.206, 0.205, 0.204, 0.201, and 0.155, respectively. Additionally, space quality exerts an indirect effect on tourist experiences through the mediating roles of cognitive, affective, and behavioral dimensions, with a path coefficient of 0.143. This research provides theoretical support and practical insights for empowering cultural heritage space governance with digital technologies in the context of cultural and tourism integration. The rapid urbanization process has accelerated the degradation of ecosystem services (ESs) in peri-urban rural areas of the Yangtze River Delta (YRD), leading to increasing landscape ecological risks (LERs). Establishing a scientifically grounded landscape ecological risk assessment (LERA) system and corresponding control strategies is therefore imperative. Using rural areas of Jiangning District, Nanjing as a case study, this research proposes an optimized dual-dimensional coupling assessment framework that integrates ecosystem service value (ESV) and ecological risk probability. The spatiotemporal evolution of LER in 2000, 2010, and 2020 and its key driving factors were further studied by using spatial autocorrelation analysis and geodetector methods. The results show the following: (1) From 2000 to 2020, cultivated land remained dominant, but its proportion decreased by 10.87%, while construction land increased by 26.52%, with minimal changes in other land use types. (2) The total ESV increased by CNY 1.67 × 109, with regulating services accounting for over 82%, among which water bodies contributed the most. (3) LER showed an overall increasing trend, with medium- to highest-risk areas expanding by 55.37%, lowest-risk areas increasing by 10.10%, and lower-risk areas decreasing by 65.48%. (4) Key driving factors include landscape vulnerability, vegetation coverage, and ecological land connectivity, with the influence of distance to road becoming increasingly significant. This study reveals the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of LER in typical peri-urban villages. Based on the LERA results, combined with terrain features and ecological pressure intensity, the study area was divided into three ecological management zones: ecological conservation, ecological restoration, and ecological enhancement. Water is essential for ecological balance, environmental sustainability, and food security, particularly in arid regions where effective water management increasingly depends on farmer cooperation. The Samarkand region of Uzbekistan, known for its favorable climate and leading role in grape production, is facing rising drought conditions. This study explores the factors influencing grape farmers’ willingness to collaborate on water management in the districts of Ishtikhan, Payarik, and Kushrabot, which together produce 75–80% of the region’s grapes. A quantitative survey of 384 grape-producing households was conducted across 19 county citizens’ gatherings (38.7% of such gatherings), and structural equation modeling was employed to analyze a framework consisting of four dimensions: norms, environmental concerns, economic barriers, and the intention to adopt sustainable practices. The results indicate that norms and environmental concerns positively influence collaboration, suggesting a collective orientation toward sustainability. In contrast, economic barriers such as high costs and limited financial capacity significantly hinder cooperative behavior. Furthermore, a strong individual intention to adopt sustainable practices was associated with a greater likelihood of collaboration. These findings highlight the critical drivers and constraints shaping collective water use in agriculture and suggest that targeted policy measures and community-led efforts are vital for promoting sustainable water governance in drought-prone regions. This study explores the interplay of climate vulnerability and social capital in two rural communities: Brajaballavpur, a high-climate-prone village in the Indian Sundarbans characterized by high ecological fragility, recurrent cyclones, and saline water intrusion affecting water access, livelihoods, and infrastructure; and Jemua, a low-climate-prone village in the land-locked district of Paschim Bardhaman, West Bengal, India, with no extreme climate events. A total of 85 participants (44 in Brajaballavpur, 41 in Jemua) were selected through purposive sampling. Using a comparative qualitative research design grounded in ethnographic fieldwork, data were collected through household interviews, Participatory Rural Appraisals (PRAs), Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), and Key Informant Interviews (KIIs), and analyzed manually using inductive thematic analysis. Findings reveal that bonding and bridging social capital were more prominent in Brajaballavpur, where dense horizontal ties supported collective action during extreme weather events. Conversely, linking social capital was more visible in Jemua, where participants more frequently accessed formal institutions such as the Gram Panchayat, local NGOs, and government functionaries that facilitated grievance redressal and information access, but these networks were concentrated among more politically connected individuals. The study concludes that climate vulnerability shapes the type, strength, and strategic use of social capital in village communities. While bonding and bridging ties are crucial in high-risk contexts, linking capital plays a critical role in enabling long-term social structures in lower-risk settings. The study contributes to both academic literature and policy design by offering a relational and place-based understanding of climate vulnerability and social capital. Full article
