This article presents an original experimental and numerical approach to examining the pull-out behavior of fastening systems made of steel bars simultaneously embedded in both ends of concrete samples. This double-embedded configuration simulates a connection between the existing concrete structure and a new external exoskeleton, promoting seismic strengthening. Pull-out tests were performed across six specimen configurations combining different concrete strength classes in order to compare the adhesive solution against traditional monolithic cast-in rebar embedments. The adhesive-anchored bars achieved a peak pull-out force of ~28.6 kN, which is about 18% higher than with mixed anchorage (one end adhesive, one end cast-in). All specimens failed in concrete cracking and pull-out cone formation, with no steel bar yielding, indicating that failure was governed by concrete strength. Finite element simulations in ANSYS Explicit Dynamics were validated against these experiments, confirming the observed behavior and enabling the extension of our analysis to broader concrete strength ranges. Overall, the results demonstrate that double-ended adhesive anchorage significantly increases the connection’s load-bearing capacity and ductility compared to mixed configurations. Full article

This study aims to address the problem that traditional helical gears generate significant axial forces during transmission and innovatively proposes a design scheme of double helical face gears (DHFG). An accurate mathematical model of the tooth surface is established using spatial meshing theory and coordinate transformation. A systematic investigation using the orthogonal test method is then conducted to analyze the influence of key parameters, such as the pinion tooth number, transmission ratio, and helix angle, on gear performance. The finite element analysis results show that the overlap degree of this double helical tooth surface gear pair in actual transmission can reach 2–3, demonstrating excellent transmission smoothness. More importantly, its unique symmetrical tooth surface structure successfully achieves the self-balancing effect of axial force. Simulation verification shows that the axial force is reduced by approximately 70% compared to traditional helical tooth surface gears, significantly reducing the load on the bearing. Finally, the prototype gear is successfully trial-produced through a five-axis machining center. Experimental tests confirmed that the contact impressions are highly consistent with the simulation results, verifying the feasibility of the design theory and manufacturing process. Full article

This study investigates the structural behavior of composite double-web steel beams filled with different types of concrete made from a combination of recycled concrete aggregates and normal aggregates. The research includes both experimental and numerical analyses. Seven specimens were tested under symmetrical two-point loading, all having identical geometric properties: a span length of 1100 mm, flange plates 120 mm wide and 6 mm thick, and web plates 3 mm thick and 188 mm deep. The specimens were divided into two groups, with a control beam without concrete infill. Group one included beams filled with normal concrete in different locations (middle region, two sides, and fully filled), while group two mirrored the same fill locations but used recycled concrete instead. The experimental results showed that using normal concrete improved the ultimate load by 10.19% to 55.30%, with the fully filled beam achieving a maximum increase in ductility of about 568% and a stiffness improvement ranging from 2.6% to 39% compared to the control beam. Beams filled with recycled concrete showed increases in ultimate load from 9.52% to 42.03%, ductility improvements of up to 380%, and stiffness enhancements between 4.5% and 8.03%. Numerical modeling using ABAQUS (2021) showed excellent agreement with the experimental results, with differences in ultimate load and maximum deflection averaging 5.5% and 7.9%, respectively. The utilization of encapsulated biopharmaceuticals, including peptides and proteins, has grown substantially in recent years. In this study, the influence of aliphatic polyester physicochemical properties, specifically crystallinity and hydrophobicity, on the development of protein-loaded microparticles was investigated. A series of polyesters, namely amorphous PDLLA and semicrystalline PLLA, PCL, and PPDL, were synthesized via chemical and enzymatic ring-opening polymerization. Bovine serum albumin (BSA)-loaded microparticles were fabricated using a water-in-oil-in-water (w/o/w) double emulsion solvent evaporation method. The size of microparticles obtained was determined by scanning electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering methods. The enzymatic degradation of the polymer microparticles was assessed through incubation in a lipase-containing buffer solution. BSA and α-chymotrypsin (ACHT) were used as model proteins for the preparation of encapsulated polymer microspheres and comparison of their characteristics and properties. Protein encapsulation efficacy, release rate, and enzyme activity retained after encapsulation were evaluated and compared for selected aliphatic polyesters. The release profiles were processed with the use of various mathematical models to reveal the possible mechanism(s) of protein release. Full article

High-precision angular positioning mechanisms are essential across diverse scientific and industrial applications, from optical instrumentation to automated mechanical systems. Conventional bronze–steel gear reduction units, while reliable, are often heavy, costly, and unsuitable for chemically aggressive or vacuum environments, limiting their use in advanced research setups. This work introduces a novel 1:360 gear reduction system manufactured by resin-based additive manufacturing, designed to overcome these limitations. The compact worm–gear assembly translates a single crank rotation into a precise one-degree indicator displacement, enabling fine and repeatable angular control. A primary application is the alignment of parabolic mirrors in schlieren systems, where accurate tilt adjustment is critical to correct optical alignment; however, the design is broadly adaptable to other precision positioning tasks in laboratory and industrial contexts. Compared with conventional assemblies, the resin-based reducer offers reduced weight, chemical and vacuum compatibility, and lower production cost. Its three-stage reduction design further enhances load-bearing capacity, achieving approximately double the theoretical torque transfer of equivalent commercial systems. These features establish the device as a robust, scalable, and automation-ready solution for high-accuracy angular adjustment, contributing both to specialized optical research and general-purpose precision engineering. This study investigates the bidirectional bending performance of double- and triple-spliced steel-ribbed composite slabs for substation applications. Full-scale experiments and numerical parametric analyses were conducted to evaluate ultimate load, ductility, stiffness, failure modes, and load-transfer mechanisms. Results indicate that double-spliced slabs exhibit better performance than triple-spliced slabs, showing a 24.5% higher ultimate load and 65.3% greater ductility, with well-developed orthogonal cracks and yielding of both longitudinal prestressing steel and transverse reinforcement. Triple-spliced slabs display partial bidirectional behavior due to reduced transverse integrity, with stresses in edge slabs concentrated at the corners. Compared with monolithic slabs, spliced slabs show nearly identical stiffness at cracking onset but progressively reduced stiffness, load capacity, and ductility in the mid-to-late loading stages. Joint-crossing reinforcement is critical for transverse load transfer, and increasing its diameter is more effective than increasing its strength in preventing premature joint-controlled failure. These findings provide significant theoretical guidance and technical support for the prefabricated construction of high-voltage substation floor systems. Full article

In this work, the removal of Cu(II) ions from an aqueous effluent was studied using an Mg/Fe layered double hydroxide (LDH) as the adsorbent. The material was synthesized and characterized before and after the adsorption process to identify structural and morphological changes induced by copper uptake. Techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), Raman spectroscopy, and nitrogen physisorption (BET) were employed to confirm the interaction between the metal ions and the LDH surface. The LDH-Mg/Fe exhibited a high maximum adsorption capacity of 526 mg/g, and the adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second-order model, achieving over 90% removal of Cu(II) within 2.5 h. The Cu(II)-loaded material was subsequently evaluated as a sustainable catalyst in two applications: (i) an organic synthesis via “click” chemistry, reaching yields of up to 85%, and (ii) the decoloration of Congo Red via a Fenton-like process, achieving a decoloration efficiency of at least 84%. These dual uses demonstrate the potential of Cu(II)-loaded LDH as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly approach to simultaneous pollutant removal and catalytic valorization. Full article

Glazed façades play a decisive role in building energy performance, particularly in high-radiation equatorial climates. This study examines the thermal behavior and economic feasibility of three glazing systems—10 mm monolithic clear glass, laminated solar-control glass, and selective double glazing—applied to the Plataforma Gubernamental Norte, the largest institutional building in Ecuador. Dynamic simulations using DesignBuilder with the EnergyPlus engine assessed solar gains, HVAC demand, and operative temperatures, complemented by a sensitivity analysis of SHGC, U-value, and Tvis. Results indicate that selective double glazing reduced annual HVAC consumption by 78.21% (110.6 MWh), while laminated glazing achieved a 55.40% reduction. SHGC and U-value emerged as the most influential parameters, whereas Tvis had no impact on energy loads. Despite strong technical performance, the economic analysis revealed payback periods exceeding 235 years under Ecuador’s subsidized tariff (USD 0.10/kWh), compared to the 18–25 years commonly observed in Europe. This highlights the “efficiency paradox”: advanced glazing solutions deliver significant energy savings but remain financially unfeasible in subsidy-driven contexts. The findings underscore the need for policy reforms to better align façade design strategies with energy resilience, an issue particularly relevant after Ecuador’s 2024 electricity crisis and ongoing debates on subsidy elimination. Optimizing pavement maintenance and rehabilitation (M&R) strategies is essential, especially in developing countries with limited budgets. This study presents an integrated framework combining a deterioration prediction model and a genetic algorithm (GA)-based optimization model to plan cost-effective M&R strategies for flexible pavements, including asphalt concrete (AC) and double bituminous surface treatment (DBST). The GA schedules multi-year interventions by accounting for varied deterioration rates and budget constraints to maximize pavement performance. The optimization process involves generating a population of candidate solutions representing a set of selected road sections for maintenance, followed by fitness evaluation and solution evolution. A mixed Markov hazard (MMH) model is used to model uncertainty in pavement deterioration, simulating condition transitions influenced by pavement bearing capacity, traffic load, and environmental factors. The MMH model employs an exponential hazard function and Bayesian inference via Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) to estimate deterioration rates and life expectancies. A case study on Cambodia’s road network evaluates six budget scenarios (USD 12–27 million) over a 10-year period, identifying the USD 18 million budget as the most effective. The framework enables road agencies to access maintenance strategies under various financial and performance conditions, supporting data-driven, sustainable infrastructure management and optimal fund allocation. Basalt fiber-reinforced polymer (BFRP) composites are increasingly utilized in photovoltaic mounting systems due to their excellent mechanical properties and durability. Bolted connections, valued for their simplicity, ease of installation, and effective load transfer, are widely employed for joining composite components. An orthogonal experimental design was adopted to investigate the effects of key parameters—including bolt end distance, number of bolts, bolt material, bolt diameter, preload, and connection length—on the load-bearing performance of three bolted BFRP plate configurations: lap joint (DJ), single lap joint (DP), and double lap joint (SP). Test results showed that the DJ connection exhibited the highest average tensile load capacity, exceeding those of the SP and DP connections by 45.3% and 50.2%, respectively. This superiority is attributed to the DJ specimen’s longer effective shear length and greater number of load-bearing bolts. Conversely, the SP connection demonstrated the largest average peak displacement, with increases of 29.7% and 52.9% compared to the DP and DJ connections. The double-sided constraint in the SP configuration promotes more uniform preload distribution and enhances shear deformation capacity. Orthogonal sensitivity analysis further revealed that the number of bolts and preload magnitude significantly influenced the ultimate tensile load capacity across all connection types. Finally, a calculation model for the tensile load capacity of bolted BFRP connections was established, incorporating a friction decay coefficient (α) and shear strength (τ). This model yields calculated errors under 15% and is applicable to shear slip-dominated failure modes, thereby providing a parametric basis for optimizing the tensile design of bolted BFRP joints. To address the challenge of asymmetric deformation and failure in the surrounding rock of main roadways within extra-thick coal seams caused by level differences under intense mining disturbance, this study systematically analyzed the evolution laws of principal stress fields, deviatoric stress fields, and their impact on surrounding rock stability in upper-, middle-, and lower-level roadways within a 20 m extra-thick coal seam during mining retreat. The analysis employed numerical simulation, similarity simulation, and field monitoring. Key findings include the following: ① As the working face advances, the principal stress vector lines deflect following a bias-unloading pattern, while the peak value of the deviatoric stress field (PVDSF) exhibits asymmetric bias-loading characteristics. The lower-layer roadway emerges as the primary load-bearing layer controlling surrounding rock stability. ② The evolution trend of the maximum principal stress vector orientation is consistent across different layers. The deflection trajectory manifests as “the deflection of the goaf side → the near layer orientation → the deflection of the solid coal side”. ③ The deviatoric stress peak zones (DSPZs) at all layers exhibit a characteristic “three-stage” evolution. The deviatoric loading pattern for the lower-layer roadway surrounding rock is the following: initial state double peak region crescent-shaped non-layer distribution type → the range of the bimodal region and the extreme value increased simultaneously, distributed in a non-layer manner → the asymmetrical distribution type of steep drop in the peak area of non-mining deviator stress. ④ The junctions between the mining-side rib and floor and the non-mining-side rib and roof were identified as critical control zones. An innovative zonal asymmetric directional anchoring control technology, “anchor cable foundation support + concrete floor + asymmetric reinforcing anchor cable support”, along with a “One Directional Penetration and Three Synergies” control methodology, was proposed. Water and energy are strongly intertwined, especially in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) whose electrical loads can strain local grids. This work evaluates the technical, economic, and environmental feasibility of powering the WWTP attached to the smart building of Ibn Tofail University (Morocco) with building-integrated photovoltaics (PV) and a complementary wind turbine. Using the HOMER Pro optimizer, two configurations were compared: (i) stand-alone PV and (ii) a hybrid PV/wind system. The hybrid design raises the renewable energy fraction from 8.5% to 17.9%, cutting annual grid purchases by 8% and avoiding 47.9 t CO2 yr−1. The levelized cost of electricity decreases from 1.08 to 0.97 MAD kWh−1 (≈0.11 to 0.10 USD kWh−1), while the net present cost drops by 6%. Sensitivity analyses confirm robustness under grid electricity tariff and load-growth uncertainties. These results demonstrate that modest wind additions can double the renewable share and improve economics, offering a replicable pathway for WWTPs and smart buildings across the MENA region. Epoxy resin is injected into the timber dowel slots, followed by pre-tightening of the bolts, forming a composite dowel system where the ‘bolt–epoxy resin–timber’ components work in synergy. The load–displacement characteristics and failure modes of nine specimen groups were investigated through a series of double-shear push-out tests. The influence of a wide range of connector parameters on the stiffness, shear bearing capacity, and ductility of STC joints was systematically investigated. The parameters included fastener strength grade, thread configuration, diameter, number, and the use of epoxy resin reinforcement. The experimental results demonstrated that high-strength partially threaded bolts were crucial for achieving a synergy of high load-bearing capacity and commendable ductility, while full-threaded bolts exhibited vulnerability to brittle shear failure, a consequence of stress concentration at the root of the threads. Although screw connections provided enhanced initial stiffness through timber anchorage, ordinary bolt connections exhibited superior ultimate load-bearing capacity. In comparison with conventional bolt connections, epoxy resin–bolt connections exhibited enhanced mechanical properties, with an augmentation in ultimate load and initial stiffness of 12% and 11.8%, respectively, without sacrificing ductility. Despite increasing concerns over recurrent phosphorus (P) pollution, the Ju River—a small tributary of the Yangtze River—has received limited scientific attention. To correct this, the present study integrates field-based observations with the Hydrological Simulation Program—FORTRAN (HSPF) model to comprehensively assess the conjunct effects of urban expansion and changing precipitation patterns on watershed hydrology and phosphorus dynamics at the small-catchment scale. A total of five urban expansion scenarios and three precipitation enhancement scenarios were simulated to capture both seasonal and event-driven variations in daily discharge and total phosphorus (TP) concentrations. The model was calibrated and validated using in situ water quality data, ensuring high reliability of the simulations. The results indicate that agricultural non-point sources are the primary contributor to total phosphorus (TP) loads. During the overlapping period of intensive farming and heavy rainfall (June–July), TP concentrations more than doubled compared to other months, with these two months accounting for over 70% of the annual TP load. Urban expansion significantly amplified hydrological extremes, increasing peak discharge by up to 224% under extreme rainfall, thereby intensifying flood risks. Although increased precipitation diluted TP concentrations, it simultaneously accelerated overall phosphorus export. This study offers a novel modeling–monitoring framework tailored for small watersheds and provides critical insights into how land use transitions and climate change jointly reshape nutrient cycling. The findings support the development of targeted, scenario-based strategies to mitigate eutrophication risks in vulnerable river systems. Full article

According to United Nations projections, the global population is expected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, with 70% residing in urban areas, while arable land availability continues to decline. Vertical farming (VF) offers a promising pathway for sustainable urban food production by utilizing vertical space and controlled environments. Among emerging approaches, the adaptive vertical farm (AVF) introduces movable shelving systems that adjust to plant growth stages, allowing a higher number of cultivation shelves to be accommodated within the same rack height. In this study, we developed a computational model to quantify and compare the energy consumption of AVF and conventional VF systems under industrial-scale conditions. The reference scenario considered 272 multilevel racks, each hosting 8 shelves in the VF and 15 shelves in the AVF, with Lactuca sativa as the test crop. Energy consumption for thermohygrometric control and lighting was estimated under different sowing schedules, with crop growth dynamics simulated using scheduling algorithms. Plant heat loads were calculated through the Penman–Monteith model, enabling a robust estimation of evapotranspiration and its impact on indoor climate control. Simulation results show that the AVF achieves an average 22% reduction in specific energy consumption for climate control compared to the VF, independently of sowing strategies. Moreover, the AVF nearly doubles the number of cultivation shelves within the same footprint, increasing the cultivable surface area by over 400% compared to traditional flat indoor systems. This work provides the first quantitative assessment of AVF energy performance, demonstrating its potential to simultaneously improve land-use efficiency and reduce energy intensity, thereby supporting the sustainable integration of vertical farming in urban food systems.
