Background/Objectives: University students frequently engage in risky alcohol consumption, making them a priority population for targeted interventions. Motivational interventions (MIs) have been widely implemented to address this issue, but evidence of their effectiveness remains heterogeneous. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of MIs in reducing alcohol consumption and related harm among university students through a systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and BVS Library, including randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published up to April 2025. The PRISMA and RoB-2 tools guided reporting and risk of bias assessment. Random-effects models were applied to pool effect sizes for changes in alcohol consumption patterns and related consequences. Results: Fifteen RCTs were included. MIs significantly reduced daily alcohol intake (−0.55 drinks/day; 95% CI: −0.78 to −0.32), with additional reductions in weekly consumption and binge drinking episodes, though these were not statistically significant. Positive effects were also observed in reducing alcohol-related consequences and blood alcohol concentration levels. Short, single-session formats (45–90 min) showed consistent efficacy across studies, with effects sustained at 2–3 months and, in some cases, up to one year post-intervention. Conclusions: MIs are effective, brief, and adaptable strategies for reducing harmful alcohol use and associated negative outcomes among university students. Their simplicity, feasibility, and sustained effects make them valuable tools for university health programs. Future research should focus on optimizing intervention components and evaluating their effectiveness in diverse cultural and socioeconomic contexts. Full article

Background/Objectives: Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is experiencing a rising burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), projected to surpass infectious diseases as the leading cause of mortality. This shift reflects a complex public health challenge driven by changing dietary patterns and persistent social and gender inequities. Women of reproductive age are particularly vulnerable due to biological and sociocultural factors, with diet playing a central role in NCD development and maternal health. This scoping review explores dietary determinants of NCDs in this population and identifies evidence gaps to support context-specific, gender-responsive interventions. Methods: The review followed the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and PRISMA-ScR guidelines. A comprehensive search was conducted across PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar for studies published between January 2010 and May 2025. After removing duplicates, 577 articles were screened, and 19 met the inclusion criteria. Data were synthesized using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. An adapted conceptual framework informed by the ecological model was developed to illustrate the multilevel pathways linking dietary determinants to NCD outcomes. Results: Frequent consumption of ultra-processed foods, salty snacks, processed meats, and sugar-sweetened beverages was consistently associated with increased NCD risk. Central obesity was prevalent among nearly half of the women studied, and a high intake of sugary drinks was common across diverse populations. Among pregnant women, overweight was observed in approximately one-quarter of participants, despite the inadequate intake of protein and iron. Vitamin A deficiency was moderately prevalent, and urban residence was linked to a twofold increase in the coexistence of obesity and micronutrient deficiencies. These patterns were shaped by poverty, food insecurity, and the cultural norms influencing dietary behaviors and access to nutritious foods. Conclusion: Dietary determinants significantly contribute to the rising NCD burden among women of reproductive age in SSA, yet adolescent women remain underrepresented in research. Addressing these gaps through culturally sensitive, multisectoral interventions and biomarker-informed longitudinal studies is essential for guiding inclusive policies and sustainable health strategies for this vulnerable population. People often turn to sweet foods for comfort during times of stress, as energy imbalance is implicated in several neuropsychiatric disorders including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Although acute sucrose consumption may improve cognitive capabilities, its long-term effectiveness has been debated. Objectives: In a widely used mouse model, we examined the effect of sucrose drinking on conditioned fear-induced freezing (as a model of PTSD), with emphasis on the concentrations and timing of the intervention as well as sex differences. We aimed to develop a low-cost, widely accessible therapeutic option. Methods: A short electric foot shock was used for trauma, and freezing was detected 24 h (mimicking acute stress disorder, ASD) or 14 days (PTSD-like symptoms) later in the trauma context and with trauma cues. Results: First, we confirmed that our trauma increased freezing, independent of previous habituation to sucrose drinking. Next, we confirmed that 16% and 32%, but not 2% sucrose drinking for 24 h (but not 3 h) immediately after trauma, diminished freezing behavior the next day. However, the same intervention did not influence behavior 14 days later. Moreover, we could not find any curative effect of 24 h of 16% sucrose consumption before testing remote fear memory 14 days after trauma. Conclusions: Consuming a high-calorie solution immediately following trauma for 24 h may influence ASD but does not necessarily alter the development of PTSD symptoms. Here, we offer a new perspective on energy regulation in neuropsychiatric disorders. Full article

Older adults face unique challenges related to hydration, particularly within the context of psychosocial determinants. This study aimed to examine the associations between total water intake (TWI), beverage variety, social capital, and health-related quality of life. We hypothesized that their ability to access, purchase, prepare, and drink a variety of beverages towards optimal TWI is affected by their physical/mental health and social support. To test the hypothesis, a cross-sectional design was implemented. We evaluated TWI, social capital, and Health-Related Quality Of Life, using the Water Balance Questionnaire, Social Capital Questionnaire, and SF-36, respectively, in 890 free-living participants (49.6% male), aged >65 years, recruited in Metropolitan Athens and Crete, Greece. TWI, 80% from beverages, was 2.6 ± 0.7 L in men and 2.4 ± 0.8 L in women and was associated with beverage variety (4.1 ± 1.0 in men, 3.9 ± 1.1 in women). Social capital, mental health, and variety of beverages were significant predictors of TWI; for each increased unit of the aforementioned predictors, TWI increased to 9.1, 6.8, and 183.5 mL, respectively. Spatial and gender differences were observed in social capital score and its components and in Health-Related Quality Of Life and its components, thus reflecting differences in social support and in functional health, plausibly linked to barriers/enablers to TWI. These findings highlight the potential importance of addressing psychosocial factors to support hydration in older adults. Full article

Both studies and conservation of mountain waters are essential because of the primary role of mountains as “natural water towers” for the preservation and optimized exploitation of water reserves. In particular, under climate change stresses which induce reductions in rain and snow precipitation, especially in areas with rain-snow transition zones, increasing knowledge of the geological setting and hydrogeological context of mountain springs is pivotal for their preservation and optimized exploitation. However, the complexity and remoteness of mountain waters make them difficult to conceptualize and analyse, both observationally and instrumentally. In this context, using detailed geological mapping and hydrogeological surveys, geophysical data can provide useful information on the subsurface setting. Electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) surveys are utilized in this work for the investigation of the Montellina Spring (MS), which is located in the low Dora Baltea Valley and represents a significant drinking water source in the alpine context. Geophysical surveys, complemented by specific geological and hydrogeological observations, allowed a detailed reconstruction of the water circuit that supplies the spring along an articulated buried glacial valley and a loose bedrock in a DSGSD (deep-seated gravitational slope deformation) environment. The methodological approach also provides the basis for its successful application in similar geological contexts. Full article

Latin American countries continue to face critical challenges in ensuring safe and continuous access to drinking water, particularly in rural and peri-urban areas. This article presents a territorial and institutional diagnosis of drinking water access in the Piura region (Peru). It is a coastal region with approximately 2 million inhabitants, characterized by environmental stress, governance fragmentation, and social inequality. The study adopts a structural documentary approach based on academic literature and validated institutional data to analyze spatial disparities in water coverage, continuity, and quality. It identifies structural and institutional barriers—such as overlapping mandates, limited local capacity, and the absence of monitoring systems—to universal access. The findings also highlight the limitations of isolated innovation efforts, such as pilot projects led by universities and private companies, which often lack mechanisms for institutional integration and policy scaling. The analysis is framed within international water governance frameworks, including the OECD Principles and the Integrated Water Resources Management paradigm, and aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 6. The study offers a multi-scalar perspective grounded in local realities and identifies governance research gaps in rural Peru. Results underscore the need for territorialized planning, strengthened coordination, and inclusive governance to achieve sustainable and equitable water access in fragile contexts. Full article

Male infertility, as a globally significant reproductive health issue, remains idiopathic in over 40% of cases. Reproductive disorders in males induced by environmental pollutants, such as di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), have garnered considerable attention in recent years. DEHP induces testicular oxidative stress and ferroptosis via its active metabolite MEHP, thereby leading to spermatogenic dysfunction. Lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP), a traditional food and medicine homologous substance, exhibits potential antioxidant and reproductive protective properties. However, the underlying mechanism by which LBP intervenes in the toxicity induced by DEHP remains to be elucidated. This study explored the protective effect and molecular mechanism of LBP on DEHP-induced testicular injury through in vivo and in vitro experiments. The result showed that DEHP exposure (150 mg/L in free drinking water for 6 weeks) significantly decreased testicular weight, sperm concentration, and sperm motility in mice, while DEHP exposure induced pathological damage to testicular tissue, as evidenced by cavitation of seminiferous tubules, reduced numbers of spermatocytes, and vacuolar degeneration of Sertoli cells. However, LBP (450 mg/L) treatment significantly reversed testicular damage and sperm parameters. In vitro, MEHP reduced the viability of GC2 cells (spermatocyte cell line) and TM4 cells (Sertoli cell line), and LBP significantly restored cell activity. Mechanistically, exposure to DEHP/MEHP results in iron overload (elevated levels of free Fe2+), lipid peroxidation (increased MDA and reduced GSH), and dysregulated expression of key proteins involved in ferroptosis and iron homeostasis within the testis and cells. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that when NRF2 was specifically inhibited by ML385 or silenced via siRNA, the protective effects of LBP were abrogated, thereby validating the critical role of NRF2 in the regulation of iron homeostasis by LBP. In conclusion, LBP mitigates DEHP-induced testicular injury by activating NRF2 to regulate iron homeostasis in Sertoli cells and spermatocytes cells. This study not only offers a potential strategy for the prevention and treatment of male reproductive disorders caused by DEHP exposure, but also underscores the reproductive protective effects and application prospects of LBP in this context. Understanding urban diversity is critical to inclusive planning for sustainable urban development. This study introduces a new Urban Diversity Index (UDI) based on global point-of-interest (POI) data for food-related establishments—defined here as facilities that offer food and beverage services, including various kinds of eating and drinking venues —covering 249 cities across 154 countries. The UDI integrates three components: Pielou’s Evenness Index (J′) to capture the balance of establishment types, a Coverage Ratio (C′) to measure global representativeness of establishment categories, and density (ρ′) to reflect spatial concentration. By applying concentric buffer analysis around city centers, we evaluate the spatial profiles of diversity in each city. Results show that while cities like London and Istanbul have similar index components, they exhibit significant differences in the spatial extent and pattern of high-diversity zones, reflecting their unique morphological and regulatory contexts. Furthermore, the analysis of “Peak Distance Buffer Zones”—areas where UDI remains above 95% of its maximum—reveals diverse urban forms, particularly in Asian megacities. Scatterplots of standardized UDI and peak distances identify distinct typologies of urban diversity structures. Notably, urban population size showed no significant correlation with UDI values. Overall, this study demonstrates the utility of globally standardized POI-based metrics in capturing the spatial heterogeneity of urban qualitative diversity and offers new insights into cross-city comparisons of urban complexity. This study analyzes the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on alcohol, cannabis, and tobacco use among adolescents aged 14–19 in Central Catalonia across three periods. Data were obtained from two waves of the DESKcohort project. The first wave (n = 4641) was pre-COVID-19 and the second wave was divided into two phases: post-COVID-19 with restrictions (n = 3478) and post-COVID-19 without restrictions (n = 2900). The prevalence of monthly binge drinking, cannabis use in the last 30 days, and daily tobacco use was calculated. Poisson regression models estimated adjusted prevalence ratios (aPR) comparing two post-pandemic phases to the pre-pandemic baseline. Binge drinking increased during the restrictions among girls [aPR = 1.5 (95%CI: 1.1–2.1)] and boys [aPR = 1.7 (95%CI: 1.3–2.3)]. Cannabis use decreased during restrictions and remained low post-pandemic, especially among girls [aPR = 0.6 (95%CI: 0.5–0.8)] and boys in the 4th Compulsory Secondary Education (CSE) [aPR = 0.4 (95%CI: 0.3–0.6)], and girls in the 2nd Post-Compulsory Secondary Education/Intermediate-Level Training Cycles (PCSE/ILTC) [aPR = 0.7 (95%CI: 0.6–0.9)]. Daily tobacco use also dropped among boys in the 4th year of CSE [aPR = 0.5 (95%CI: 0.3–0.7)] and girls in the 2nd year of PCSE/ILTC [aPR = 0.7 (95%CI: 0.6–0.9)]. The COVID-19 pandemic has created a unique opportunity to reassess patterns of adolescent substance use in a context of sudden social disruption. The findings highlight the need to denormalize alcohol and tobacco use and promote healthier adolescent behavior through education. Full article

According to Victor Ernest Shelford’s ‘Law of Tolerance,’ organisms within ecosystems thrive optimally when environmental conditions are favorable. Applying this principle to ecosystems and agro-ecosystems facing water scarcity or environmental challenges can significantly enhance their productivity. In these ecosystems, phytocenosis adjusts its conditions by utilizing water with varying salinity levels. Moreover, establishing optimal drinking water conditions for human populations within an ecosystem can help mitigate future negative succession processes. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the quality of two distinct water sources in the Amudarya district of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, Uzbekistan: collector-drainage water and groundwater at depths of 10 to 25 m. This research is highly relevant in the context of climate change, as improper management of water salinity, particularly in collector-drainage water, may exacerbate soil salinization and degrade drinking water quality. The primary methodology of this study is as follows: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) standard for collector-drainage water is applied, and the water quality index is assessed using the CCME WQI model. The Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME) model is adapted to assess groundwater quality using Uzbekistan’s national drinking water quality standards. The results of two years of collected data, i.e., 2021 and 2023, show that the water quality index of collector-drainage water indicates that it has limited potential for use as secondary water for the irrigation of sensitive crops and has been classified as ‘Poor’. As a result, salinity increased by 8.33% by 2023. In contrast, groundwater quality was rated as ‘Fair’ in 2021, showing a slight deterioration by 2023. Moreover, a comparative analysis of CCME WQI values for collector-drainage and groundwater in the region, in conjunction with findings from Ethiopia, India, Iraq, and Turkey, indicates a consistent decline in water quality, primarily due to agriculture and various other anthropogenic pollution sources, underscoring the critical need for sustainable water resource management. This study highlights the need to use organic fertilizers in agriculture to protect drinking water quality, improve crop yields, and promote soil health, while reducing reliance on chemical inputs. Furthermore, adopting WQI models under changing climatic conditions can improve agricultural productivity, enhance groundwater quality, and provide better environmental monitoring systems. Background: The differential effects of post-exercise rehydration beverages on inflammatory processes and organ protection remain incompletely characterized. This study investigated how beverages with distinct compositions influence urinary biomarkers following endurance exercise. Methods: In a randomized crossover design, eight trained male runners performed 6000 m pace running followed by consumption of 500 mL of either: water (Drink 1), hypotonic sports drink (Drink 2, 200 mOsm/L), oral rehydration solution (Drink 3, 270 mOsm/L), or modified hypotonic formulation (Drink 4, 200 mOsm/L). After 60 min, participants completed a 1000 m time trial. Urine samples were collected at baseline, post-6000 m, and post-1000 m for analysis of biochemical parameters and inflammatory cytokines. Results: No significant differences in 1000 m performance were observed between trials. Drink 3 significantly reduced creatinine and uric acid excretion compared to other beverages (p < 0.05), suggesting decreased waste product elimination. Creatinine-corrected intestinal fatty acid-binding protein values were lower with Drinks 2 and 3, indicating potential intestinal protection. Notably, Drink 4 showed modest but significant enhancement of IL-4 excretion (p < 0.05, ηp2 = 0.347), demonstrating beverage-specific modulation of anti-inflammatory cytokines with moderate effect sizes. Conclusions: Different beverage formulations exert distinct effects on waste product elimination, intestinal organ damage markers, and inflammatory cytokine profiles. These findings suggest that beverage selection should be tailored to specific recovery priorities and training contexts. Full article

An accurate assessment of alcohol consumption is essential for identifying at-risk individuals and informing prevention and intervention strategies. The present study aimed to validate the Italian version of the Alcohol Use Questionnaire (AUQ), a self-report instrument designed to assess both general alcohol intake and binge drinking patterns. A sample of 378 Italian participants (54.5% female; Mage = 26.76 years, SD = 8.44) completed the AUQ along with additional measures assessing binge eating and psychological vulnerabilities related to addiction. Confirmatory factor analysis supported a bifactor model reflecting two distinct but related dimensions: general intake and binge drinking. Network analysis highlighted the central role of perceived frequency of intoxication within the structure of alcohol-related behaviors. Both AUQ indices showed good internal consistency and significant associations with external variables, particularly impulsivity, dissociation, and affect dysregulation, supporting construct validity. The Italian AUQ emerges as a valid and reliable tool for assessing alcohol use patterns and may be useful in both research and clinical practice. Full article

Background/Objectives: Recent research indicates a global transition from healthy and balanced diets to unhealthy Westernized dietary patterns (WDPs). This transition is linked to increased rates of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), e.g., obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases, often preceded by metabolic syndrome (MetS). Therefore, the objective of this study was to develop a diet quality index, termed Westernized Diet Index (WDI), to assess adherence to WDPs and its association with main cardiometabolic health issues, for which MetS and its components were chosen as representatives of NCDs. Methods: The development of the WDI was driven by a semi-systematic and comprehensive examination of the literature (n = 491 articles) that evaluated the influence of WDP components on health outcomes. The scoring algorithm involved multiple steps, assigning scores based on study design, sample size, and the direction of food effects on health outcomes. Results: The final developed index encompassed 30 food groups/items. It was revealed that soft drinks, processed foods, red meat, sodium, and hydrogenated fats had the most detrimental effects on health, significantly influencing the index’s coefficients. In contrast, dietary fiber, plant-based metabolites, vitamins, minerals, nuts/seeds, and fish had the most substantial beneficial impacts. Conclusions: The WDI aligns with the existing literature on the importance of specific food items and with other validated diet quality indices, e.g., the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) and Alternate Healthy Eating Index (AHEI). Thus, the WDI can provide evidence for clinicians and researchers in formulating evidence-based dietary guidelines as well as strategies for the prevention and treatment of diet-related health issues. However, further validation is proposed to verify the WDI’s capability across different contexts. Full article

Distribution and Determinants of Antibiotic Self-Medication: A Cross-Sectional Study in Chinese Residents

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) represents a critical global health threat, with inappropriate antibiotic self-medication (ASM) being a key contributor. China—as the world’s largest antibiotic consumer—faces significant challenges despite regulatory efforts, compounded by limited contemporary data during the COVID-19 pandemic. A nationwide cross-sectional study was conducted using the 2021 China Family Health Index Survey (n = 11,031 participants across 120 cities). Trained investigators administered face-to-face questionnaires assessing ASM practices, decision-making factors, and sociodemographic characteristics. Multivariate logistic regression identified determinants of ASM. Overall, ASM prevalence was 33.7% (n = 3717), with no urban-rural difference (p > 0.05). Physician advice (78.2%), drug safety (67.1%), and efficacy (64.2%) were primary selection criteria; rural residents prioritized drug price and salesperson recommendations more than their urban counterparts (p < 0.01). Key predictors included higher ASM odds among females (OR = 1.30, 95%CI:1.18–1.43), middle-aged adults (46–59 years; OR = 1.20, 95%CI:1.02–1.42), those with health insurance (resident: OR = 1.33; commercial: OR = 1.62), and individuals with drinking histories (OR = 1.20, 95%CI:1.10–1.31). Lower odds were associated with primary education (OR = 0.69, 95%CI:0.58–0.81), unemployment (OR = 0.88, 95%CI:0.79–0.98), and absence of chronic diseases (OR = 0.56, 95%CI:0.47–0.67). One-third of Chinese residents engaged in ASM during the pandemic, driven by intersecting demographic and behavioral factors. Despite converging urban-rural prevalence rates, distinct decision-making drivers necessitate context-specific interventions, including strengthened pharmacy regulation in rural areas, tailored education programs for high-risk groups, and insurance system reforms to disincentivize self-medication. Physical and mental health are fundamental human needs, yet modern medicine cannot always preserve them. At this point, alternative and complementary medical approaches sometimes offer significant contributions. In this context, religious healing stands out as a practice that plays a complementary role in many cultures and is frequently relied on, although it often faces criticism from the perspective of official religious doctrine. This study examines the phenomenon of “religious healing” from a sociological perspective. The provinces of Iğdır, Ağrı, and Erzurum, located in eastern Türkiye, were selected for the fieldwork. Interviews were conducted with 31 individuals who sought religious healing. The main purpose of this article is to understand the motivations of individuals who participate in such practices and how their healing experiences are transformed into religious experiences. The field data indicate that religious healing commonly involves practices such as recitation and blowing of the Qur’an, drinking blessed water, and the preparation of amulets. Feelings of helplessness and fear of social stigma are prominent in participants’ reasons for resorting to religious healers. The participants’ turn to healers can be seen as a defense mechanism, shifting blame to external forces like the evil eye, jinn, and magic, thereby reducing personal responsibility. Religion was instrumentalized to make the behavior of applying to a healer reasonable and acceptable. Full article
