The responsibility for risk assessment and user safety in forested and recreational areas lies with the property owner. This study shows that unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), combined with remote sensing and GIS analysis, effectively support the identification of high-risk trees, particularly those with reduced structural stability. UAV-based surveys successfully detect 78% of dead or declining trees identified during ground inspections, while significantly reducing labor and enabling large-area assessments within a short timeframe. The study covered an area of 6.69 ha with 51 reference trees assessed on the ground. Although the multispectral camera also recorded the red-edge band, it was not included in the present analysis. Compared to traditional ground-based surveys, the UAV-based approach reduced fieldwork time by approx. 20–30% and labor costs by approx. 15–20%. Orthomosaics generated from images captured by commercial multispectral drones (e.g., DJI Mavic 3 Multispectral) provide essential information on tree condition, especially mortality indicators. UAV data collection is fast and relatively low-cost but requires equipment capable of capturing high-resolution imagery in specific spectral bands, particularly near-infrared (NIR). The findings suggest that UAV-based monitoring can enhance the efficiency of large-scale inspections. However, ground-based verification remains necessary in high-traffic areas where safety is critical. Integrating UAV technologies with GIS supports the development of risk management strategies aligned with the principles of precision forestry, enabling sustainable, more proactive and efficient monitoring of tree-related hazards. Potatoes are the most extensively cultivated vegetable crop in Canada and rank as the fifth largest primary agricultural commodity. Given their diverse end uses and significant market value, particularly in processed forms, ensuring consistent quality from harvest to consumption is of critical importance. Total glycoalkaloids (TGA) are nitrogen-containing secondary metabolites that are known to accumulate in the tuber as an effect of greening in-field or elsewhere in the supply chain. In this study, 210 Yukon Gold (YG) potatoes were exposed to a constant light source to green over a period of 14 days and sampled in 7-day intervals. The samples were scanned using a short-wave infrared (SWIR) hyperspectral imaging camera in the 900–2500 nm wavelength range. Once individually scanned, pixel-wise spectral data was extracted and averaged for each tuber and matched with its respective ground truth TGA values which were obtained using a High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) system. Prediction models using the partial least squares regression technique were developed from the extracted hyperspectral data and reference TGA values. Wavelength selection techniques such as competitive adaptive re-weighted sampling (CARS) and backward elimination (BE) were deployed to reduce the number of contributing wavelengths for practical applications. The best model resulted in a correlation coefficient of cross-validation (R2cv) of 0.72 with a root mean square error of cross-validation (RMSEcv) of 51.50 ppm. Full article

Innovation projects with sustainable characteristics are increasingly seen as strategic drivers for organizations to expand market share and retain customers. Yet, firms face limited resources while dealing with many potential projects. To address this challenge, an integrated framework for evaluating and ranking innovation projects using sustainability-related factors can support more consistent decision-making. Although several models for project selection exist in the literature, few provide a comprehensive approach that incorporates sustainability criteria. This study proposes a model for selecting innovation projects by explicitly considering sustainability aspects, supported by multi-criteria decision support methods. The methodological approach followed the Design Cycle method, grounded in Design Science Research. The main result is a novel, customizable model for evaluating, ranking, and managing innovation projects within a sustainability-oriented context. The model was validated through application in two high-performance organizations recognized for their innovation and sustainability practices. Additionally, this research offered reflections on how sustainability-driven innovation can be implemented in practice. Overall, the findings demonstrated that the proposed model is adaptable to different organizational realities, sectors, and sizes, enhancing the capacity to assess and understand the role of sustainability in innovation projects more effectively. This paper presents a robust and computationally efficient fault classification framework for wind energy conversion systems (WECS), built upon a Robust Random Vector Functional Link Network (Robust-RVFLN) and validated through real-time simulations on a Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS). Unlike existing studies that depend on high-dimensional feature extraction or purely data-driven deep learning models, our approach leverages a compact set of five statistically significant and physically interpretable features derived from rotor torque, phase current, DC-link voltage, and dq-axis current components. This reduced feature set ensures both high discriminative power and low computational overhead, enabling effective deployment in resource-constrained edge devices and large-scale wind farms. A synthesized dataset representing seven representative fault scenarios—including converter, generator, gearbox, and grid faults—was employed to evaluate the model. Comparative analysis shows that the Robust-RVFLN consistently outperforms conventional classifiers (SVM, ELM) and deep models (CNN, LSTM), delivering accuracy rates of up to 99.85% for grid-side line-to-ground faults and 99.81% for generator faults. Beyond accuracy, evaluation metrics such as precision, recall, and F1-score further validate its robustness under transient operating conditions. By uniting interpretability, scalability, and real-time performance, the proposed framework addresses critical challenges in condition monitoring and predictive maintenance, offering a practical and transferable solution for next-generation renewable energy infrastructures. In recent years, there has been a global increase in environmental awareness, which has driven the application of natural materials or the synthesis of novel, environmentally compatible materials. Composite materials hold a prominent position among modern materials and are typically developed to achieve resistance to various damage mechanisms, thereby extending the service life of structures. This study presents the synthesis and characterisation of high-density metal–glass composite materials. The commercially available 316L stainless steel powder was used as the matrix material, while andesite basalt powder was used as the reinforcement phase. Andesite basalt aggregate, ground into powder, is a cost-effective, widely available, and environmentally friendly natural raw material. Powder metallurgy was employed to produce the composite materials. Sintering was performed at 1250 °C for 30 min in a vacuum. The density of the sintered composite samples was analysed as a function of andesite basalt content, with sintering conducted in the presence of a liquid phase. Composite materials were characterised using optical and scanning electron microscopy, X-ray structural analysis, and hardness testing. This study confirmed that the optimal combination of properties was achieved in the composite with 20 wt.% andesite basalt, present as a glass phase within the 316L steel matrix. Full article

Due to their potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, light-frame timber buildings (LFTBs) are widely used in seismically active regions. However, their construction in these areas remains limited, primarily due to the high costs associated with continuous anchor tie systems (ATSs), which are required to withstand significant seismic forces. To address this challenge, frictional seismic isolation offers an alternative by enhancing seismic protection. Although frictional base isolation is an effective mitigation strategy, its performance can be compromised by extreme ground motions that induce large lateral displacements, resulting in impacts between the sliders and the perimeter protection ring. The effects of these internal lateral impacts on base-isolated LFTBs remain largely unexplored. To fill this knowledge gap, this study evaluates the collapse capacity of a set of base-isolated LFTBs representative of Chilean real estate developments. Nonlinear numerical models were developed in the OpenSeesPy platform to capture the nonlinear behavior of the superstructure, including the impact effects within the frictional isolation system. Incremental dynamic analyses following the FEMA P695 methodology were performed using subduction ground motions. Collapse margin ratios (CMRs) and fragility curves were derived to quantify seismic performance. Results indicate that frictional base-isolated LFTBs can achieve acceptable collapse safety without ATS, even with compact-size bearings. Code-conforming archetypes achieved CMRs ranging from 1.24 to 1.55, indicating sufficient safety margins. These findings support the cost-effective implementation of frictional base isolation in mid-rise timber construction for high-seismic regions. Full article

Real-time, accurate and detailed monitoring of urban green space is of great significance for constructing the urban ecological environment and maximizing ecological benefits. Although high-resolution remote sensing technology provides rich ground object information, it also makes the surface information of urban green spaces more complex. Existing classification methods often struggle to meet the requirements of classification accuracy and the automation demands of high-resolution images. This study utilized GF-7 remote sensing imagery to construct an urban green space classification method for Beijing. The study used the YOLO v8 model as the framework to conduct a fine classification of urban green spaces within the Fifth Ring Road of Beijing, distinguishing between evergreen trees, deciduous trees, shrubs and grasslands. The aims were to address the limitations of insufficient model fit and coarse-grained classifications in existing studies, and to improve vegetation extraction accuracy for green spaces in northern temperate cities (with Beijing as a typical example). The results show that the overall classification accuracy of the trained YOLO v8 model is 89.60%, which is 25.3% and 28.8% higher than that of traditional machine learning methods such as Maximum Likelihood and Support Vector Machine, respectively. The model achieved extraction accuracies of 92.92%, 93.40%, 87.67%, and 93.34% for evergreen trees, deciduous trees, shrubs, and grasslands, respectively. This result confirms that the combination of deep learning and high-resolution remote sensing images can effectively enhance the classification extraction of urban green space vegetation, providing technical support and data guarantees for the refined management of green spaces and “garden cities” in megacities such as Beijing. Background: Postural control in healthy young adults involves complex neuromuscular processes; however, the kinematic and kinetic consequences of small, forward leg perturbations in a defined population are not fully described. This study aimed to characterize the kinematic and kinetic consequences of forward leg perturbations during quiet standing. Methods: This investigation used a quasi-experimental repeated-measures design. Sixteen healthy young women (20.1 ± 0.7 years), all right-leg dominant, were tested using the Gait Real-Time Analysis Interactive Laboratory (GRAIL) system. Forward treadmill perturbations were applied to each limb during quiet standing, and joint angles, ground reaction forces, and torques were measured across baseline, perturbation, and response phases. As the data were non-normally distributed, paired comparisons were conducted using the Wilcoxon test, with significance set at p < 0.05 (Bonferroni corrected) and effect sizes (r) reported. Results: Joint angles remained symmetrical between limbs (no significant differences after correction). In contrast, kinetic measures showed clear asymmetries: at baseline, the dominant limb produced greater knee torque (p = 0.0003, r = 0.73), ankle torque (p = 0.0003, r = 0.76), and medio-lateral GRF (p = 0.0003, r = 0.87). During perturbation, it again generated higher knee (p = 0.0036, r = 0.43) and ankle torques (p = 0.0003, r = 0.53), with larger medio-lateral GRF (p = 0.0003, r = 0.87). In the response phase, the dominant limb showed greater hip torque (p = 0.0033, r = 0.43) and a small dorsiflexion shift at the ankle (p = 0.0066, r = 0.41). Anterior–posterior GRF changes were minor and non-significant after correction. Conclusions: Induced forward leg movements caused limb-specific kinetic adjustments while maintaining overall kinematic symmetry. The dominant leg contributed more actively to balance recovery, highlighting its role in stabilizing posture under small perturbations. These findings are specific to the studied demographic and should not be generalized to males, older adults, left-dominant individuals, or clinical populations without further research. Full article

The sustainability of Arctic ecosystems that are extremely vulnerable is contingent upon the state of cryosoils. Understanding the principles of ecosystem stability in permafrost conditions, particularly under external natural or human-induced influences, necessitates an examination of the thermal and moisture regimes of the seasonally thawed soil layer. The study concentrated on the variability in the soil’s thermophysical properties in Central Siberia’s permafrost zone (the northern part of Krasnoyarsk Region, Taimyr, Russia). In the industrially affected area of interest, we evaluated and contrasted the differences in the thermophysical properties of soils between two opposing types of landscapes. On the one hand, these are soils that are characteristic of the natural landscape of flat shrub tundra, with a well-developed moss–lichen cover. An alternative is the soils in the landscape, which have exhibited significant degradation in the vegetation cover due to both natural and human-induced factors. The heat-insulating properties of background areas are controlled by the layer of moss and shrubs, while its disturbance determines the excessive heating of the soil at depth. In comparison to the background soil characteristics, degradation of on-ground vegetation causes the active layer depth of the soils to double and the temperature gradient to decrease. With respect to depth, we examine the changes in soil temperature and heat flow dynamics (q, W/m2). The ranges of thermal conductivity (λ, W/(m∙K)) were assessed using field-measured temperature profiles and heat flux values in the soil layers. The background soil was discovered to have lower thermal conductivity values, which are typical of organic matter, in comparison to the soil of the transformed landscape. Thermal diffusivity coefficients for soil layers were calculated using long-term temperature monitoring data. It is shown that it is possible to use an adjusted model of the thermal conductivity coefficient to reconstruct the dynamics of moisture content from temperature dynamics data. A satisfactory agreement is shown when the estimated (Wcalc, %) and observed (Wexp, %) moisture content values in the soil layer are compared. The findings will be employed to regulate the effects on landscapes in order to implement sustainable nature management in the region, thereby preventing the significant degradation of ecosystems and the concomitant risks to human well-being. In this study, we investigate a shielded capacitive power transfer (S-CPT) system that employs cast iron road covers as transmission electrodes for both dynamic and static charging of electric vehicles. Coupling capacitance was evaluated from S-parameters using copper, aluminum, ductile cast iron, structural steel, and carbon steel electrodes, with additional comparisons of ductile iron surface conditions (casting, machining, electrocoating). In a four-plate S-CPT system operating at 13.56 MHz, capacitance decreased with electrode spacing, yet ductile cast iron reached ~70 pF at 2 mm, demonstrating a performance comparable to that of copper and aluminum despite having higher resistivity and permeability. Power transmission experiments using a Ø330 mm cast iron cover meeting road load standards achieved 58% efficiency at 100 W, maintained around 40% efficiency at power levels above 200 W, and retained 45% efficiency under 200 mm lateral displacement, confirming robust dynamic performance. Simulations showed that shield electrodes enhance grounding, stabilize potential, and reduce return-path impedance. Finite element analysis confirmed that the ductile cast iron electrodes can withstand a 25-ton design load. The proposed S-CPT concept integrates an existing cast iron infrastructure with thin aluminum receiving plates, enabling high efficiency, mechanical durability, EMI mitigation, and reduced installation costs, offering a cost-effective approach to urban wireless charging. Cycling-induced vibration significantly affects riding comfort, with road surface conditions and vehicle type identified as primary contributing factors. This study developed a vibration measurement system based on ISO 2631-1, and proposed a method for generating cycling comfort maps grounded in vibration severity levels. Field measurements on 30 campus roads in Nanchang, China, used a Mountain Bike, Shared E-bike, and Shared Bicycle. Triaxial acceleration data were collected to evaluate vibration exposure, and comfort levels were classified to produce spatially resolved maps. Results show the proposed system has strong stability and adaptability across urban environments. The maps effectively captured vibration intensity variations along road segments. Among the three vehicle types, Mountain Bikes showed the lowest vibration exposure, with approximately 90% of segments rated as comfortable. Shared E-bike exhibited moderate vibration levels, with 42% of segments deemed uncomfortable, while Shared Bicycles experienced the highest vibration, with 80% of routes potentially inducing discomfort and only 1% meeting comfort standards. This study offers a framework for objective acquisition and visualization of cycling vibration data. The developed system and mapping method provide tools for assessing vehicle vibration, guiding route selection, and offer potential value for road quality monitoring. Full article

The transition to electric mobility has intensified efforts to develop battery technologies that are not only high-performing but also environmentally sustainable. A critical element in battery system design is the structural housing, which must provide effective impact protection to ensure passenger safety and prevent catastrophic failures. This study examines the impact response of an innovative sheet molding compound (SMC) composite battery housing, manufactured from an Elium resin modified with Martinal ATH matrix, reinforced with glass fibers, that combines fire resistance and recyclability, unlike conventional thermoset and metallic housings. The material was characterized through standardized mechanical tests, and its impact performance was evaluated via drop-weight experiments on plates and a full-scale housing. The impact tests were conducted at varying energy levels to induce barely visible impact damage (BVID) and visible impact damage (VID). A finite element model was developed in LS-DYNA using the experimentally derived material properties and was validated against the impact tests. Parametric simulations of ground and pole collisions revealed the critical velocity thresholds at which housing deformation begins to affect the first battery cells, while lower-energy impacts were absorbed without compromising the pack. The study provides one of the first combined experimental and numerical assessments of Elium SMC in battery enclosures, emphasizing its potential as a sustainable alternative for next-generation battery systems for transport applications. The application of dynamic vibration absorbers (DVAs) is a countermeasure to suppress vibrations induced by railway traffic. A key advantage of the DVA application is that it does not require any changes to the path of vibration propagation or the receiver of vibration. A review of the literature reveals the necessity of deriving the optimum properties of DVA to mitigate railway vibrations. To this end, the optimum DVA properties were investigated through the development of a two-dimensional finite element model of the track-tunnel-soil system. The model was validated using the results of a field test. A parametric study was made to obtain the optimum properties of DVA for different soils surrounding the tunnel. The results of the model analysis indicate that the DVA has better vibration reduction for metro tunnels built in soft soils as compared to those surrounded by medium and stiff soils. Also, the results disclose that the DVA reduces vibration radiated on the ground surface when the DVA natural frequency is tuned to a low frequency. Using the results of the parametric study, graphs are suggested to select the optimum properties of the DVA as a function of the soil around the tunnel. Full article

Amid ongoing educational reforms and the rapid advancement of the knowledge economy, innovative teaching behaviors are not only closely related to teachers’ professional growth and students’ academic achievement but are also regarded as the key driving force for the evolution of the educational system. Consequently, identifying effective ways to foster teachers’ innovative teaching behaviors has become a central concern in educational psychology and management. Grounded in the Job Demands–Resources framework, this study developed and tested a chained mediation model using survey data from 1163 Chinese elementary and secondary school teachers. The model examines how teachers’ emotional competence fosters innovative teaching behaviors and elucidates the underlying mechanisms. The results revealed that (1) emotional competence significantly and positively predicted innovative teaching behaviors, and (2) teaching efficacy and work vitality served not only as independent mediators but also as sequential mediators in this relationship. These findings extend the understanding of the antecedents of teachers’ innovative behaviors from an emotional perspective, demonstrating that emotional competence, as a critical psychological resource, can be transformed into innovative teaching behaviors through dual “cognitive–motivational” and “energy–motivational” pathways. This study offers both theoretical insights and practical implications for advancing teaching innovation by strengthening teachers’ emotional competence, teaching efficacy, and work vitality. This research study proposes a framework to support plurilingual education in higher education settings. The Cooperative Structural Framework, grounded in cooperative learning theory and practice, draws on established principles such as positive interdependence, individual accountability, and parallel interaction. Empirical research was conducted in a higher education setting, where the author examined the performance of monolingual and multilingual university groups. The author investigated the difference between the monolingual control groups and the multilingual experimental groups using the Two-Sample t-Test method, then applied ANOVA to investigate whether there were differences among the subgroups with different linguistic backgrounds and finally used the Tukey HSD post hoc test to determine which subgroups showed significant differences. Empirical evidence from this experimental project confirms the effectiveness of the structural framework of cooperative learning in fostering inclusive, participatory, and equitable learning among linguistically diverse student cohorts.
