Due to their potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, light-frame timber buildings (LFTBs) are widely used in seismically active regions. However, their construction in these areas remains limited, primarily due to the high costs associated with continuous anchor tie systems (ATSs), which are required to withstand significant seismic forces. To address this challenge, frictional seismic isolation offers an alternative by enhancing seismic protection. Although frictional base isolation is an effective mitigation strategy, its performance can be compromised by extreme ground motions that induce large lateral displacements, resulting in impacts between the sliders and the perimeter protection ring. The effects of these internal lateral impacts on base-isolated LFTBs remain largely unexplored. To fill this knowledge gap, this study evaluates the collapse capacity of a set of base-isolated LFTBs representative of Chilean real estate developments. Nonlinear numerical models were developed in the OpenSeesPy platform to capture the nonlinear behavior of the superstructure, including the impact effects within the frictional isolation system. Incremental dynamic analyses following the FEMA P695 methodology were performed using subduction ground motions. Collapse margin ratios (CMRs) and fragility curves were derived to quantify seismic performance. Results indicate that frictional base-isolated LFTBs can achieve acceptable collapse safety without ATS, even with compact-size bearings. Code-conforming archetypes achieved CMRs ranging from 1.24 to 1.55, indicating sufficient safety margins. These findings support the cost-effective implementation of frictional base isolation in mid-rise timber construction for high-seismic regions. Full article

Diesel engines power much of the heavy-duty equipment used in underground mines, where exhaust emissions pose acute environmental and occupational health challenges. However, predicting the amount of air required to dilute these emissions is difficult because exhaust mass flow and pollutant concentrations vary nonlinearly with multiple operating parameters. We apply deep learning to predict the total exhaust mass flow and carbon monoxide (CO) concentration of a six-cylinder gas–diesel (dual-fuel) turbocharged KAMAZ 910.12-450 engine under controlled operating conditions. We trained artificial neural networks on the preprocessed experimental dataset to capture nonlinear relationships between engine inputs and exhaust responses. Model interpretation with Shapley additive explanations (SHAP) identifies torque, speed, and boost pressure as dominant drivers of exhaust mass flow, and catalyst pressure, EGR rate, and boost pressure as primary contributors to CO concentration. In addition, symbolic regression yields an interpretable analytical expression for exhaust mass flow, facilitating interpretation and potential integration into control. The results indicate that deep learning enables accurate and interpretable prediction of key exhaust parameters in dual-fuel engines, supporting emission assessment and mitigation strategies relevant to underground mining operations. These findings support future integration with ventilation models and real-time monitoring frameworks. Full article

Developing sustainable and high-performance sorbents for efficient CO2 capture is essential for mitigating climate change and reducing industrial emissions. In this study, phosphorus-doped porous carbons (LPSP-T) were synthesized via a one-step activation–doping strategy using lotus petiole biomass as a precursor and sodium phytate as a dual-function activating and phosphorus-doping agent. The simultaneous activation and phosphorus incorporation at various temperatures (650–850 °C) under a nitrogen atmosphere produced carbons with tailored textural properties and surface functionalities. Among them, LPSP-700 exhibited the highest specific surface area (525 m2/g) and a hierarchical porous structure, with abundant narrow micropores (<1 nm) and phosphorus-containing surface groups that synergistically enhanced CO2 capture performance. The introduction of P functionalities not only improved the surface polarity and binding affinity toward CO2 but also promoted the formation of a well-connected pore network. As a result, LPSP-700 delivered a CO2 uptake of 2.51 mmol/g at 25 °C and 1 bar (3.34 mmol/g at 0 °C), along with a high CO2/N2 selectivity, fast CO2 adsorption kinetics and moderate isosteric heat of adsorption (Qst). Furthermore, the dynamic CO2 adsorption capacity (0.81 mmol/g) was validated by breakthrough experiments, and cyclic adsorption–desorption tests revealed excellent stability with negligible loss in performance over five cycles. Correlation analysis revealed pores < 2.02 nm as the dominant contributors to CO2 uptake. Overall, this work highlights sodium phytate as an effective dual-role agent for simultaneous activation and phosphorus doping and validates LPSP-700 as a sustainable and high-performance sorbent for CO2 capture under post-combustion conditions. Nitrogen eutrophication represents a significant environmental challenge in Chinese aquatic ecosystems, exacerbated by rapid agricultural intensification, industrial expansion, and urban development. This review consolidates existing knowledge on the drivers and impacts of nitrogen pollution in Chinese aquatic ecosystems, with a focus on environments such as lakes, rivers, and coastal waters. The primary sources of nitrogen enrichment are excessive fertilizer application, livestock manure discharge, industrial emissions, and untreated industrial and municipal wastewater. These inputs have led to severe ecological consequences, including harmful algal blooms, hypoxia, loss of biodiversity, and deteriorating water quality, threatening ecosystem health and human well-being. The review also examines mitigation strategies implemented in China, encompassing regulatory policies such as the “Zero Growth” fertilizer initiative, as well as technological advancements in wastewater treatment and sustainable farming practices. Case studies highlighting successful interventions, such as lake restoration projects and integrated watershed management, demonstrate the potential for effective nitrogen control. However, persistent challenges remain, including uneven policy enforcement, insufficient public awareness, and gaps in scientific understanding of nitrogen cycling dynamics. This review aims to inform future efforts toward achieving sustainable nitrogen management in China by synthesizing current research and identifying key knowledge gaps. Addressing these issues is crucial for safeguarding China’s aquatic ecosystems and promoting global nutrient stewardship. Full article

Accurate carbon emission estimation across all operational stages of container terminals is essential for advancing low-carbon development in the transportation sector and designing effective emission reduction pathways. This study develops a two-layer carbon accounting framework that integrates vessel berthing–waiting and terminal operations, tailored to the operational characteristics of Shanghai Port container terminals. The Ship Traffic Emission Assessment Model (STEAM) is applied to estimate emissions during berthing, while a bottom-up method is employed for mobile-mode container handling operations. Targeted mitigation strategies—such as shore power adoption, operational optimization, and “oil-to-electricity” or “oil-to-gas” transitions—are evaluated through comparative analysis. Results show that vessels generate substantial emissions during erthing, which can be significantly reduced (by over 60%) through shore power usage. In terminal operations, internal transport trucks have the highest emissions, followed by straddle carriers, container tractors, and forklifts; in stacking, tire cranes dominate emissions. Comprehensive comparisons indicate that “oil-to-electricity” can reduce total emissions by approximately 39%, while “oil-to-gas” can achieve reductions of about 73%. These findings provide technical and policy insights for supporting the green transformation of container terminals under the national dual-carbon strategy. Full article

This study investigates whether digital economy imports can mitigate the environmental costs of foreign direct investment (FDI) in developing economies. While FDI typically increases carbon emissions, particularly in countries with weak infrastructure and limited technological capabilities, digital imports can provide a compensatory mechanism by enhancing energy efficiency, facilitating the diffusion of green technologies, and strengthening environmental regulations. Our contribution lies in shifting the focus from domestic “digitalization levels” to cross-border digital absorption as a moderating factor in environmental relations. Furthermore, this paper proposes a compensation mechanism for developing countries’ digital economy imports, explaining how they can mitigate environmental costs associated with FDI by alleviating structural constraints such as inadequate infrastructure and limited technological capabilities. The findings indicate that while FDI inflows exacerbate carbon emissions, digital economy imports play a new moderating role by addressing structural deficiencies in developing economies. This study advances the debate on FDI and the environment, revealing the short-term environmental value of digital economy imports. Full article

Tackling climate change in the public–private partnership (PPP) infrastructure sector requires radical transformation of projects to make them resilient against climate risks and free from excessive carbon emissions. Types of PPP infrastructure such as transport, power plants, hospitals, schools and residential buildings experience more than 30% of global climate change risks. Therefore, this study aims to examine the interrelationships between the climate risk management strategies in PPP infrastructure projects. The first step in conducting this research was to identify the strategies through a comprehensive literature review. The second step was data collection from 147 PPP stakeholders with a questionnaire. The third step was analysing the interrelationships between the strategies using a partial least square–structural equation model approach. The findings include green procurement, defined climate-resilient contract award criteria, the identification of climate-conscious projects and feasible contract management strategies. The results provide understanding of actionable measures to counter climate risks and they encourage PPP stakeholders to develop and promote climate-friendly strategies to mitigate climate crises in the PPP sector. The results also serve as foundational information for future studies to investigate climate change risk management strategies in PPP research. Full article

Water electrolysis represents a viable and scalable green hydrogen production technology, which mitigates carbon emissions and contributes to environmental sustainability. Transition metal-based layered double hydroxides (LDHs) exhibit excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) efficiency, attributed to their adjustable interlayer spacing combined with abundant active sites. Here, we report a uniform multimetallic catalyst, demonstrating robust and efficient OER performance for high-performance water splitting. SEM and TEM confirmed its ultrathin hierarchical nanosheet structure. The characteristic peaks of LDH in XRD and Raman spectra further verified the successful synthesis of the LDH material. Fe-CoZn LDH delivers exceptional OER performance in 1 M KOH, requiring overpotentials of just 209, 238, and 267 mV to reach 10, 100, and 400 mA cm−2, respectively. The catalyst also demonstrates exceptional hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance, achieving 10 mA cm−2 at 119 mV. It also has excellent stability, with stable operation for up to 100 h under 100 mA cm−2 in 1 M KOH electrolyte solution. Full article

Fungi in tropical ecosystems remain an understudied yet critical component of climate change mitigation, particularly within the Land Use, Land-Use Change, and Forestry (LULUCF) sector. This review highlights their dual role in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by regulating carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxides (N2O) while enhancing long-term carbon sequestration. Mycorrhizal fungi are pivotal in maintaining soil integrity, facilitating nutrient cycling, and amplifying carbon storage capacity through symbiotic mechanisms. We synthesize how fungal symbiotic systems under LULUCF shape ecosystem networks and note that, in pristine ecosystems, these networks are resilient. We introduce the concept of Nature-based Culture (NbC) to describe symbiotic self-cultures sustaining ecosystem stability, biodiversity, and carbon sequestration. Case studies demonstrate how the NbC concept is applied in reforestation strategies such as AeroHydro Culture (AHC), the Integrated Mangrove Sowing System (IMSS), and the 4N approach (No Plastic, No Burning, No Chemical Fertilizer, Native Species). These approaches leverage mycorrhizal networks to improve restoration outcomes in peatlands, mangroves, and semi-arid regions while minimizing land disturbance and chemical inputs. Therefore, by bridging fungal ecology with LULUCF policy, this review advocates for a paradigm shift in forest management that integrates fungal symbioses to strengthen carbon storage, ecosystem resilience, and human well-being. Global warming, driven by greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, is accelerating globally and highlights the need for effective mitigation strategies. This study assesses the economic feasibility of rainbow trout aquaculture by incorporating GHG emissions into its analysis, thereby contributing to mitigation efforts in the fisheries sector. Focusing on two farming systems—recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) and flow-through systems (FTS)—we estimated GHG emissions and conducted an economic evaluation using data collected through field surveys. The average GHG emission was 7.14 kg CO2 eq per kilogram of trout produced, with RAS showing lower emissions than FTS. Electricity and feed were identified as the primary emission sources. The economic analysis revealed an average net present value (NPV) of USD 987,609 and an internal rate of return (IRR) of 18%, with RAS outperforming FTS in profitability. A sensitivity analysis under carbon pricing showed that economic feasibility was maintained, but the NPV declined by about 24% under the carbon tax scenario. Overall, these findings underscore the importance of balancing profitability and emission reduction for sustainable aquaculture management. Full article

This study presents an integrated assessment of anchorage-related emissions and air quality impacts in the Panama Canal region through Automatic Identification System (AIS) data, bottom-up emission estimation, and atmospheric dispersion modeling. One year of terrestrial AIS observations (July 2024–June 2025) captured 4641 vessels with highly variable waiting times: mean 15.0 h, median 4.9 h, with maximum episodes exceeding 1000 h. Annual emissions totaled 1,390,000 tons of CO2, 20,500 tons of NOx, 4250 tons of SO2, 656 tons of PM10, and 603 tons of PM2.5, with anchorage activities contributing 497,000 tons of CO2, 7010 tons of NOx, 1520 tons of SO2, 232 tons of PM10, and 214 tons of PM2.5. Despite the main engines being shut down during anchorage, these activities consistently accounted for 34–36% of the total emissions across all pollutants. High-resolution emission mapping revealed hotspots concentrated in anchorage zones, port berths, and canal approaches. Dispersion simulations revealed strong meteorological control: northwesterly flows transported emissions offshore, sea–land breezes produced afternoon fumigation peaks affecting Panama City, and southerly winds generated widespread onshore impacts. These findings demonstrate that anchorage operations constitute a major source of shipping-related pollution, highlighting the need for operational efficiency improvements and meteorologically informed mitigation strategies. This study evaluated the seasonal variability of soil–atmosphere greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes—carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O)—across a land-use gradient in the Andean–Amazon transition zone of Colombia. The gradient included five land-use types incorporating at least one innovative climate-smart practice—improved pasture (IP), cacao agroforestry system (CaAS), copoazu agroforestry system (CoAS), secondary forest with agroforestry enrichment (SFAE), and moriche palm swamp ecosystem (MPSE)—alongside the dominant regional land uses, old-growth forest (OF) and degraded pasture (DP). Soil GHG fluxes varied markedly among land-use types and between seasons. CO2 fluxes were consistently higher during the dry season, whereas CH4 and N2O fluxes peaked in the rainy season. Agroecological and restoration systems exhibited substantially lower CO2 emissions (7.34–9.74 Mg CO2-C ha−1 yr−1) compared with DP (18.85 Mg CO2-C ha−1 yr−1) during the rainy season, and lower N2O fluxes (0.21–1.04 Mg CO2-C ha−1 yr−1) during the dry season. In contrast, the MPSE presented high CH4 emissions in the rainy season (300.45 kg CH4-C ha−1 yr−1). Across all land uses, CO2 was the dominant contributor to the total GWP (>95% of emissions). The highest global warming potential (GWP) occurred in DP, whereas CaAS, CoAS and MPSE exhibited the lowest values. Soil temperature, pH, exchangeable acidity, texture, and bulk density play a decisive role in regulating GHG fluxes, whereas climatic factors, such as air temperature and relative humidity, influence fluxes indirectly by modulating soil conditions. These findings underscore the role of diversified agroforestry and restoration systems in mitigating GHG emissions and the need to integrate soil and climate drivers into regional climate models. Background/Objectives: Behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), the most prevalent clinical subtype within the frontotemporal lobar degeneration spectrum disorders, is characterized by early and prominent changes that significantly disrupt everyday functioning. This study aims to identify the key correlates of functional status in bvFTD by investigating the relative contributions of cognitive deficits, behavioral disturbances, personality changes, and brain perfusion abnormalities. Additionally, it seeks to develop a theoretical framework to elucidate how these factors may interconnect and shape unique functional profiles. Methods: A total of 26 individuals diagnosed with bvFTD were recruited from the 2nd Neurology Clinic of “AHEPA” University Hospital in Thessaloniki, Greece, and underwent a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment to evaluate their cognitive functions. Behavioral disturbances, personality traits, and functional status were rated using informant-based measures. Regional cerebral blood flow was assessed using Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) imaging to evaluate brain perfusion patterns. Penalized Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) regression analysis was performed to identify the most robust correlates of functional impairment, followed by path analyses using structural equation modeling to explore how these factors may interrelate and contribute to functional disability. Results: The severity of negative behavioral symptoms (e.g., apathy), conscientiousness levels, and performance on neuropsychological measures of semantic verbal fluency, visual attention, visuomotor speed, and global cognition were identified as the strongest correlates of performance in activities of daily living. Neuroimaging analysis revealed hypoperfusion in the right prefrontal (Brodmann area 8) and inferior parietal (Brodmann area 40) cortices as statistically significant neural correlates of functional impairment in bvFTD. Path analyses indicated that reduced brain perfusion was associated with attentional and processing speed deficits, which were further linked to more severe negative behavioral symptoms. These behavioral disturbances were subsequently correlated with declines in global cognition and conscientiousness, which were ultimately associated with poorer daily functioning. Conclusions: Hypoperfusion in key prefrontal and parietal regions, along with the subsequent cognitive and neuropsychiatric manifestations, appears to be associated with the pronounced functional limitations observed in individuals with bvFTD, even in early stages. Understanding the key determinants of the disease can inform the development of more targeted, personalized treatment strategies aimed at mitigating functional deterioration and enhancing the quality of life for affected individuals. Metatranscriptome Analysis of Sheep Rumen Reveals Methane Production Changes Induced by Moringa oleifera as a Dietary Supplement

Global warming has become a significant public health concern, with intensive livestock farming as a major contributor. To mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, strategies such as manipulating the ruminal environment with dietary additives are essential. This study evaluated Moringa oleifera, a globally widespread tree with antioxidant, multivitamin, protein-rich, and anti-inflammatory properties, as a feed additive. Rumen fluid was collected from three Pelibuey sheep, homogenized, and subjected to an in vitro fermentation study for 48 h with three alfalfa/moringa ratio treatments: T0 Control (100:0), T1 Low (85:15), and T2 High (70:30). Total RNA was extracted, followed by high-definition sequencing of the metatranscriptome. The sequencing yielded approximately 456 million sequences. A total of 117 phyla were identified and approximately 1300 genera were mapped. Predominant phylum differed by treatment: T0, Firmicutes; T1, Proteobacteria; and T2 with Synergistetes, at least one sample per treatment. Archaea were nearly absent in T1, which explains a statistically significant decrease in methane production. In the Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA), it was observed that one of the metabolic pathways with a statistically significant difference (p-value < 0.05) was that of methane, specifically in the low moringa treatment (T1) compared to the control (T0). From the functional analysis, differentially expressed enzymes were identified, some of which are involved in the methane metabolic pathway, such as formate dehydrogenase (EC 1.17.1.9) and glycine hydroxymethyltransferase (EC 2.1.2.1), which are intermediates in methane formation. These results suggest that 15% Moringa oleifera supplementation alters ruminal microbiota, reduces archaeal activity, and suppresses methane-related pathways. These findings provide molecular evidence supporting the potential of M. oleifera as a methane mitigation strategy in ruminant nutrition. Full article

Bulgaria continues to face serious challenges related to air quality. To mitigate traffic-related air pollution and in line with the European regulations, the Metropolitan Municipal Council of Sofia has adopted and introduced low-emission zones (LEZs) in the city centre. The goal of this study is to address the specific needs of urban planning in the city in support of local decision-making. A bespoke emission inventory was developed for the LEZs in Sofia, and high-resolution numerical simulations (100 m resolution) were carried out to assess the effect of the measures implemented to reduce emissions in the central part of the city. The results show a decrease in nitrogen dioxide concentrations along major roads and intersections, but projected concentrations will still be high. No significant improvement is expected for particulate matter pollution due to the limitations of this study. High-resolution (100 m) emission inventories of domestic heating, minor roads, and bare soil surfaces, the major sources of particulate matter pollution, are not included in this study. An integrated model is needed to analyse and compare different scenarios for the development of the transport system, and the gradual introduction of LEZs must be accompanied by a number of other additional measures and actions.
