With the rapid development of e-commerce in China, carbon emissions from express packaging have become increasingly prominent, and the division of inter-regional emission responsibilities has emerged as a key research focus. Based on the principle of shared responsibility between producers and consumers, this study integrates life cycle assessment (LCA) and spatial decomposition analysis to quantify the full-life-cycle carbon footprint of China’s e-commerce express packaging across the raw material, production, and disposal stages and calculates the inter-provincial embodied carbon transfer. The findings show that: (1) in 2022, total emissions reached 41.209 million t CO2e, exhibiting a “more in the east, less in the west” spatial pattern, with Guangdong Province as the largest source; (2) plastic packaging generates roughly twice the upstream emissions of paper packaging, while paper packaging surpasses plastic during disposal; and (3) significant inter-provincial disparities exist in embodied carbon transfer, with seven southeastern coastal provinces as net exporters and a net-import pattern of “more in the east, less in the west; more in the south, less in the north,” accounting for 40 % of the total transfer. Based on this, it is recommended that the government attach great importance to the issue of responsibility allocation arising from the embodied carbon transfer of e-commerce express packaging. Collaborative Scheduling of Yard Cranes, External Trucks, and Rail-Mounted Gantry Cranes for Sea–Rail Intermodal Containers Under Port–Railway Separation Mode

The spatial separation of port yards and railway hubs, which relies on external truck drayage as a necessary link, hampers the seamless transshipment of sea–rail intermodal containers between ports and railway hubs. This creates challenges in synchronizing yard cranes (YCs) at the port terminal, external trucks (ETs) on the road, and rail-mounted gantry cranes (RMGs) at the railway hub. However, most existing studies focus on equipment scheduling or container transshipment organization under the port–railway integration mode, often overlooking critical time window constraints, such as train schedules and export container delivery deadlines. Therefore, this study investigates the collaborative scheduling of YCs, ETs, and RMGs for synchronized loading and unloading under the port–railway separation mode. A mixed-integer programming (MIP) model is developed to minimize the maximum makespan of all tasks and the empty-load time of ETs, considering practical time window constraints. Given the NP-hard complexity of this problem, an improved genetic algorithm (GA) integrated with a “First Accessible Machinery” rule is designed. Extensive numerical experiments are conducted to validate the correctness of the proposed model and the performance of the solution algorithm. The improved GA demonstrates a 6.08% better solution quality and a 97.94% reduction in computation time compared to Gurobi for small-scale instances. For medium to large-scale instances, it outperforms the adaptive large neighborhood search (ALNS) algorithm by 1.51% in solution quality and reduces computation time by 45.71%. Furthermore, the impacts of objective weights, equipment configuration schemes, port–railway distance, and time window width are analyzed to provide valuable managerial insights for decision-making to improve the overall efficiency of sea–rail intermodal systems. The production of fruit crops plays a vital role in the agricultural sector, contributing significantly to the social and economic development of rural communities. In Brazil, fruit production is diverse due to favorable edaphoclimatic conditions, with avocado (Persea americana Mill.) emerging as an important crop. Its production continues to expand in both cultivated areas and yield, making it a key export to non-producing countries. However, despite its importance, nutritional management information, crucial for achieving high yields, remains limited. Current guidelines on nutrition monitoring are outdated, general, and based on data from other countries with different edaphoclimatic conditions, making them not directly applicable to Brazilian orchards. Furthermore, outdated nutritional information becomes less reliable over time, as climate change alters soil conditions and crop nutrient concentrations and requirements, reinforcing the need for the establishment of up-to-date and specific nutritional information. This study aimed to establish nutritional standards for ‘Hass’ avocado production using the Diagnosis and Recommendation Integrated System (DRIS) and Compositional Nutrient Diagnosis (CND) methodologies, and to define sufficiency ranges (SRs) and Critical Levels (CLs) for both macronutrients (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, and S) and micronutrients (B, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn). The analyses were based on yield (t ha−1) and leaf nutrient content data from commercial orchards, with datasets divided into younger (4–9 years) and older (10–26 years) plant groups. The DRIS effectively established nutritional standards for younger plants, explaining 11% of yield variation through nutritional balance. CND, in turn, was effective for both groups, accounting for 14% of yield variation and outperforming DRIS in associating nutritional status with productivity. SRs and CLs for ‘Hass’ avocado production were defined using both DRIS and CND. Together, these indices and diagnostic parameters offer valuable tools for enhancing nutritional monitoring and fertilization strategies in Brazil. Notably, SRs and CLs varied according to plant age. A Research on the Sustainable Impact of FTA Strategy on the Global Value Chain Embedding of Listed Enterprises in China

The Free Trade Area (FTA) strategy and the participation of enterprises in global value chains (GVCs) are important aspects of China’s high-quality economic development stage. This study matches trade data from the China Customs Import and Export database with information from listed firms in the CSMAR database, calculating the firms’ GVC embeddedness and the depth of trade agreements at the firm level. On this basis, this research employs a gravity model with fixed effects to empirically analyze the impact and mechanism of the FTA strategy on the embedding of Chinese listed firms in GVCs, utilizing data from 2000 to 2006. The results demonstrate that the FTA strategy substantially enhances the embeddedness of Chinese listed enterprises in GVCs. The heterogeneity analysis indicates that state-owned enterprises, those located in the central and western regions, manufacturing firms, and high-tech industry enterprises derive greater advantages from the FTA strategy in terms of their embeddedness in GVCs. Moreover, the mechanism analysis indicates that the FTA strategy enhances the embeddedness of enterprises in GVCs by increasing their technological innovation levels. Additionally, the internal control costs of enterprises negatively moderate the impact of the FTA strategy on their embedding in GVCs, and a “substitution effect” exists between asset operating efficiency and the FTA strategy in promoting the GVC embedding of listed firms. These findings provide empirical evidence and policy recommendations for the Chinese government to enhance the FTA strategy and sustainably improve the embeddedness of Chinese listed enterprises in GVCs. South American coffee producers face growing challenges due to external trade dependencies and climate-induced disruptions. This study investigates the role of export market diversification as a sustainability strategy for four major regional exporters of roasted non-decaffeinated coffee: Brazil, Colombia, Peru, and Ecuador. A quantitative and comparative methodology was applied over a ten-year period using the Herfindahl–Hirschman Index (HHI) to evaluate export market concentration and the Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) Index—including its normalized variant—to assess international competitiveness by destination. The results reveal substantial disparities: Brazil and Colombia exhibit moderate to high diversification and relative competitiveness in select markets, while Peru and Ecuador remain dependent on a few strategic buyers, with limited or declining comparative advantages. The findings emphasize that sustained export performance in the coffee sector requires not only a broader destination portfolio but also improved positioning through trade agreements, infrastructure development, and climate-resilient innovation. This study concludes with a strategic proposal based on three pillars—commercial, logistical, and technological—to support structural transformation and enhance the long-term sustainability of the coffee trade in South America. This paper investigates the extent to which political risk affects exporter-financed trade transactions. Using industry-level trade finance data from Turkey, we show that export transactions executed under open-account terms decrease with the political risk in the export markets. Further, we also document that the effect of political risk on trade finance is disproportionately higher for industries that export complex products. This paper contributes to the literature by examining how political risk interacts with product complexity to influence exporters’ trade finance decisions—an effect that has been previously overlooked in empirical studies. The bioeconomy and biotechnology sectors present transformative opportunities for sustainable development by harnessing biological resources and promoting innovation. This study investigates the potential for bilateral collaboration between Colombia and China, highlighting their complementary strengths: Colombia’s remarkable biodiversity and China’s advanced technological capabilities and policy frameworks. This article aimed to analyze the current landscape of bioeconomy and biotechnology in both countries, identify key areas for cooperation, evaluate regulatory frameworks, and propose strategies to strengthen bilateral efforts. This paper combines a qualitative approach with an extensive literature review, secondary data analysis, and case studies. The findings indicate that Colombia’s rich biodiversity offers significant opportunities in bioprospecting, biofuels, and agricultural biotechnology. Meanwhile, China’s expertise in bioeconomic innovation can facilitate technological advancements and capacity building. However, these opportunities remain despite challenges such as trade imbalances, regulatory gaps, and cultural differences. Collaborative initiatives focused on bioplastics, bioenergy, and circular economy principles have the potential to diversify Colombia’s exports and enhance its global competitiveness. This study emphasizes that integrating Colombia’s natural resources with China’s technological advancements has the potential to drive innovation, improve participation in global value chains, and foster sustainability. Effective governance, inclusive policies, and strategic investments are crucial to fully realizing this partnership’s transformative potential in tackling global challenges like climate change and food security. Holothurian fisheries have become a prominent métier in the Mediterranean due to increasing worldwide demand for sea cucumbers. In these newly explored grounds, their fisheries are poorly understood, especially considering the applied tactics and socioeconomics of the harvesting fleet. This study examines the small-scale holothurian (Holothuria) fishery métiers and associated socioeconomics in the Hellenic Seas—a main Mediterranean fishery ground. Holothuria fishing licenses increased in 2020 and stabilized (130) in the next years. Holothuria poli and H. tubulosa are the target species, caught by hand, using the surface air supply method or free diving. Most fishermen harvest holothurians close to the port of origin, and only the fleet from Kalymnos exploits remote grounds over the Greek territory. According to harvesting tactics, three economically viable métiers are practiced; however, shifting to alternative fishery resources is necessary to grant annual income. Sea cucumbers are sold fresh from fishermen to merchandisers who process the catch into final products (trepang) and export them. For most fishermen (64.7%), fishing for holothurians is the main occupation, gaining a highly variable monthly income (EUR 700 to 4000). The presented results refine the métiers and associated economics of an active holothurian fishery fleet, providing essential information for the viability of coastal fishery societies. Full article

Wine markets have deeply changed in recent decades in many regards. In particular, wine trade patterns have been deeply reshaped, and this also affects traditional EU exporters, who operate in a more competitive environment, with new players challenging their position and forcing them to readjust their strategies. This study analyzes recent trends in the wine exports of major EU producers. Its goal is to contribute to assessing to what extent their positioning in the international wine markets differs, and to understand the kind of competition they engage in within destination markets, with a focus on the role of their export quality as a major competitive advantage. This analysis only looks at bottled wines, both still and sparkling. It combines the use of traditional trade indicators—such as export quotas, penetration rates, and the average unit value of exports (AUV) with an innovative indicator, called C-Consy, aimed at measuring the sophistication levels of the destination markets. The results show that EU competitors behave in different ways and move along different paths. Some of them show an increasing ability to sell their products in higher segments of sophisticated markets. Others are also quite well positioned in the global arena, but they are fighting to fully catch up with the increasing demand for more sophisticated products from their clients. Some have managed to improve quality and hence advance to higher market segments, while others have shown greater weakness in facing global competition. Looking at typologies, exporters do not always show the same positioning and trends for still and sparkling wines. Full article

The Magallanes region, in southern Chile, is positioned as a strategic hub for the production of green hydrogen (GH2), green ammonia, and synthetic fuels, thanks to its exceptional wind potential and commitment to sustainability. This article analyzes the opportunities and challenges of these energy vectors in the context of global decarbonization, highlighting the key role of the Magallanes region in the energy transition. Green hydrogen production, through wind-powered electrolysis, takes advantage of the region’s constant, high-speed winds, enabling competitive, low-emission generation. In turn, green ammonia, derived from GH2, emerges as a sustainable alternative for the agricultural industry and maritime transport, while synthetic fuels (e-fuels) offer a solution for sectors that are difficult to electrify, such as aviation. The sustainability approach addresses not only emissions reduction but also the responsible use of water resources, the protection of biodiversity, and integration with local communities. The article presents the following structure: (i) introduction, (ii) wind resource potential, (iii) water resource potential, (iv) different forms of hydrogen and its derivatives production (green hydrogen, green ammonia, and synthetic fuels), (v) pilot-scale demonstration plant for Haru Oni GH2 production, (vi) future industrial-scale GH2 production projects, (vii) discussion, and (viii) conclusions. In addition, the article discusses public policies, economic incentives, and international collaborations that promote these projects, positioning Magallanes as a clean energy export hub. Finally, the article concludes that the region can lead the production of green fuels, contributing to global energy security and the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, advances in infrastructure, regulation, and social acceptance are required to guarantee a balanced development between technological innovation and environmental conservation. Full article

Concentrated apple juice (AJC) is a globally traded commodity, with major producers such as China, Poland, and the United States supplying AJC to markets worldwide. The aim of this article is to determine the competitive position of the main global exporters of concentrated apple juice. It also seeks to analyze changes in their positions over the period from 2005 to 2023. Assessing competitive position is important for several economic and business reasons, including identifying leading exporters and recognizing both growing and declining markets. The competitive position was measured using Market Share (MS) indicators, Gross and Net Export Orientation indicators (Egr, Enet), and the Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) index. The results reveal significant structural shifts in global AJC trade. Most notably, China’s declining competitiveness, reflected across all indicators, led to its loss of market leadership. This raises questions about the reasons for this decline and whether it presents opportunities for other exporters. This signals a broader reconfiguration in the global AJC supply chain, driven in part by domestic economic changes, such as rising consumption and decreasing export orientation. Simultaneously, other countries, particularly in Eastern Europe, show varying degrees of competitive growth, with Moldova and Ukraine emerging as key players. These trends suggest a diversification of supply sources and a more fragmented competitive landscape. Although national differences persist, the analysis indicates that structural and economic transformations, rather than short-term price signals, are driving the evolving global competitiveness in the AJC market. The observed weak correlations between prior-year apple prices and RCA confirm that broader market and policy factors play a more decisive role. Full article

This paper explores the role of export-oriented firms in shaping regional economic development, with a focus on their operational footprint, strategic orientation, and interaction with institutional and infrastructural environments. Set within the broader context of regional competitiveness and sustainable growth, the study examines how firms in geographically peripheral and structurally challenged areas position themselves within global markets. Emphasis is placed on understanding the internal and external factors that influence export performance, innovation capacity, and the integration of sustainability principles into business practices. The research adopts a survey-based methodology, collecting data from firms located in a cross-border region to assess their perceptions of trade barriers, infrastructure needs, strategic values, and environmental awareness. The analysis draws on established frameworks in regional development, international business, and sustainability transitions, offering a multidimensional perspective on firm behavior. By linking firm-level insights with regional development policy, the study contributes to ongoing discussions around how enterprises in remote regions can overcome structural constraints and engage more fully with global value chains. It also supports the growing call for place-based, context-sensitive strategies that align economic competitiveness with innovation, digital transformation, and environmental responsibility. Progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis type 2 (PFIC2) is a severe hepatocellular cholestasis due to biallelic variations in the ABCB11 (ATP-binding cassette B11) gene encoding the canalicular bile salt export pump (BSEP). Some missense variants identified in patients with PFIC2 do not traffic properly to the canalicular membrane. However, 4-phenybutyrate (4-PB) has been shown in vitro to partially correct the mis-trafficking of selected variants, resulting in an improvement of the medical conditions of corresponding PFIC2 patients. Herein, we report the ability of 4-PB analogous or homologous drugs and of non-4-PB related chemical correctors to rescue the canalicular expression and the activity of the folding-defective Abcb11R1128C variant. New compounds, either identified by screening a chemical library or designed by structural homology with 4-PB (or its metabolites) and synthesized, were evaluated in vitro for their ability to (i) correct the canalicular localization of Abcb11R1128C after transfection in hepatocellular polarized cell lines; (ii) restore the 3H-taurocholate transport of the Abcb11R1128C protein in Madin–Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells stably co-expressing Abcb11 and the sodium taurocholate co-transporting polypeptide (Ntcp/Slc10A1). Glycerol phenylbutyrate (GPB), phenylacetate (PA, the active metabolite of 4-PB), 3-hydroxy-2-methyl-4-phenylbutyrate (HMPB, a 4-PB metabolite analog chemically synthesized in our laboratory) and 4-oxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-naphthalene-carboxylate (OTNC, from the chemical library screening) significantly increased the proportion of canalicular Abcb11R1128C protein. GPB, PA, ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), alone or in combination with 4-PB, suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid (SAHA), C18, VX-445, and/or VX-661, significantly corrected both the traffic and the activity of Abcb11R1128C. Such correctors could represent new pharmacological insights for improving the condition of patients with ABCB11 deficiency due to missense variations affecting the transporter’s traffic. Incorporating economic policy uncertainty into the Melitz and Ottaviano theoretical model, this study systematically examines the impact of economic policy uncertainty on firm markups, contributing to our understanding of how macroeconomic conditions affect business sustainability. The results reveal a significant negative relationship between economic policy uncertainty and firm markups, with particularly adverse effects observed in labor-intensive industries, smaller firms, and export-driven companies. As investment irreversibility increases, so does the detrimental impact of economic policy uncertainty on business markups. Importantly, it is discovered that innovation efforts can mitigate these negative effects, promoting sustainable business practices under high policy uncertainty. This research extends the mechanism through which EPU affects markups and highlights the critical roles of investment irreversibility and innovation behavior as moderators. By exploring these dynamics, our findings contribute to the broader discourse on sustainability by identifying strategies for enhancing corporate resilience and competitiveness amidst economic uncertainties. The Renewable Energy Community (REC) has emerged in Europe, encouraging the use of renewable energy sources (RESs) within localities, bringing social, economic, and environmental benefits. RESs are characterized by various loads, including household consumption, storage systems, and the increasing integration of electric vehicles (EVs). EVs offer opportunities for distributed RESs, such as photovoltaic (PV) systems, which can be economically advantageous for RECs whose members own EVs and charge them within the community. This article focuses on the integration of PV systems and the management of energy loads for different participants—consumers and prosumers—along with a small EV charging setup in the REC. A REC consisting of a multi-unit building is examined through a mathematical and numerical model. In the model, hourly PV generation data are obtained from the PVGIS tool, while residential load data are modeled by converting monthly electricity bills, including peak and off-peak details, into hourly profiles. Finally, EV hourly load data are obtained after converting the data of voltage and current data from the charging monitoring portal into power profiles. These data are then used in our mathematical model to evaluate energy fluxes and to calculate self-consumed, exported, and shared energy within the REC based on energy balance criteria. In the model, an energy management system (EMS) is included within the REC to analyze EV charging behavior and optimize it in order to increase self-consumption and shared energy. Following the EMS, it is also suggested that the number of EVs to be charged should be evaluated in light of energy-sharing incentives. Numerical results have been reported for different seasons, showing the possibility for the owners of EVs to charge their vehicles within the community to optimize self-consumption and shared energy.
