The construction industry, as a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, urgently requires sustainable development solutions to achieve the Net Zero Emission Goal. Magnesium oxide (MgO)-based cementitious composites have emerged as promising alternatives due to their ability to reduce environmental impact and their potential to enhance structural integrity. Despite these advantages, limitations such as poor resistance to harsh environmental conditions and concerns over long-term durability continue to restrict their broader application. To better understand these strengths and limitations, this review investigates the influence of MgO; supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) such as fly ash, silica fume, and rice husk ash. It also examines fibers, including polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), glass, sisal, and cellulose, and their effect on the mechanical and durability properties of MgO-based composites. Mechanical performance is assessed through compressive and tensile strength, while durability is evaluated in terms of porosity, permeability, water absorption, shrinkage (autogenous and drying), and carbonation resistance. Key challenges and future research directions to promote the use of MgO composites in sustainable construction are also identified. Full article

Supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) provide a practical solution for reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with Portland cement production while enhancing the economy, performance, and service life of concrete and mortar. Currently, there is a significant disparity in the availability, supply, and utilisation levels of SCMs worldwide, particularly in South Africa. This paper presents an in-depth analysis of the characteristics and performance of various SCMs, including local availability, factors driving demand, production, and utilisation. The findings indicate that fly ash and limestone calcined clay are the most widely available SCM resources in South Africa, with deposits exceeding 1 billion tonnes each. Fly ash stockpiles continuously increase due to the reliance on coal-fired power plants for 85% of generated electricity and a low fly ash utilisation rate of 7%, significantly below international utilisation levels of 10–98%. Conversely, slag resources are depleting due to the steady decline of local steel production caused by energy and input costs, alongside the growing importation of steel products. Combined, the estimated production of slag and silica fume is about 1.4 million tonnes per annum, leading to their limited availability and utilisation in niche applications such as high-performance concrete and marine environments. Furthermore, 216,450 tonnes of SCM could potentially be processed annually from agricultural waste. In addition to quality, logistics, costs, and other challenges, this quantity can only replace 1.5% of clinker in South Africa, raising concerns about the viability of SCMs from agricultural waste. Based on its findings, this study recommends future research areas to enhance the performance, future availability, and sustainability of SCMs. Full article

With global sustainable construction growth, fully recycled coarse aggregate concrete (RCAC)—eco-friendly for cutting construction waste and reducing natural aggregate over-exploitation—has poor durability in seasonally freezing saline-soil regions (e.g., Tumushuke, Xinjiang): freeze-thaw and salt ions (NaCl, Na2SO4) cause microcracking, faster performance decline, and shorter service life, limiting its use and requiring better salt freeze resistance. To address this, a field survey of Tumushuke’s saline soil was first conducted to determine local salt type and concentration, based on which a matching 12% NaCl + 4% Na2SO4 mixed salt solution was prepared. RCAC specimens modified with fly ash (FA), silica fume (SF), and polypropylene fiber (PPF) were then fabricated, cured under standard conditions (20 ± 2 °C, ≥95% relative humidity), and subjected to rapid freeze-thaw cycling in the salt solution. Multiple macro-performance and microstructural indicators (appearance, mass loss, relative dynamic elastic modulus (RDEM), porosity, microcracks, and corrosion products) were measured post-cycling. Results showed the mixed salt solution significantly exacerbated RCAC’s freeze-thaw damage, with degradation severity linked to cycle count and admixture dosage. The RCAC modified with 20% FA and 0.9% PPF exhibited optimal salt freeze resistance: after 125 cycles, its RDEM retention reached 75.98% (6.60% higher than the control), mass loss was only 0.28% (67.80% lower than the control), and its durability threshold (RDEM > 60%) extended to 200 cycles. Mechanistic analysis revealed two synergistic effects for improved performance: (1) FA optimized pore structure by filling capillaries, reducing space for pore water freezing and salt penetration; (2) PPF enhanced crack resistance by bridging microcracks, suppressing crack initiation/propagation from freeze-thaw expansion and salt crystallization. A “pore optimization–ion blocking–fiber crack resistance” triple synergistic protection model was proposed, which clarifies admixture-modified RCAC’s salt freeze damage mechanism and provides theoretical/technical guidance for its application in extreme seasonally freezing saline-soil environments. The construction industry is a major contributor to global environmental impacts, particularly through the production and use of cement-based materials. In response to this challenge, this study provides a comprehensive synthesis of recent advances in the integration of Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) for optimizing cementitious composites containing Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs). A total of 14 case studies specifically addressing this topic were identified, reviewed, and analyzed, spanning various binder compositions, ANN architectures, and LCA frameworks. The findings highlight how hybrid ANN–LCA systems can accurately predict mechanical performance while minimizing environmental burdens, supporting the formulation of low-carbon, high-performance cementitious composites. The diverse SCMs explored, including fly ash, slag, silica fume, waste glass powder, and rice husk ash, demonstrate significant potential for reducing CO2 emissions, energy consumption, and raw material depletion. Furthermore, the systematic comparative matrix developed in this work offers a valuable reference for researchers and practitioners aiming to implement intelligent, eco-efficient mix designs. Overall, this study contributes to advancing digital sustainability tools and reinforces the viability of ANN–LCA integration as a scalable decision-support framework for green construction practices. As a key connection technology in prefabricated buildings, offshore wind power, and bridge engineering, the performance and environmental sustainability of grouted sleeve connections are essential for the long-term development of civil infrastructure. To address the environmental burden of conventional high-strength cement-based grouts, an eco-friendly sleeve grouting material incorporating industrial solid waste was developed. In this study, silica fume (15%) and fly ash (5%) were employed as supplementary cementitious materials, while nanosilica (NS) was introduced to enhance the material properties. Mechanical testing, microstructural characterization, and half-grouted sleeve uniaxial tensile tests were conducted to systematically evaluate the effect of NS content on grout performance. Results indicate that the incorporation of NS significantly accelerates the hydration of silica fume and fly ash. At an optimal dosage of 0.4%, the 28-day compressive strength reached 105.5 MPa, representing a 37.9% increase compared with the control group without NS. In sleeve tensile tests, specimens with NS exhibited reinforcement necking failure, and the load–displacement response closely aligned with the stress–strain behavior of the reinforcement. A linear relationship was observed between sleeve wall strain and reinforcement stress, confirming the cooperative load-bearing behavior between the grout and the sleeve. These findings provide theoretical guidance and technical support for developing high-strength, low-impact grouting materials suitable for sustainable engineering applications. Full article

The use of mining by-products in bitumen and asphalt mixture modification has drawn a lot of interest lately since it can improve pavement performance while advancing the goals of the circular economy and environmental sustainability. Mining by-products such as steel slag, red mud, silica fume, and fly ash have demonstrated good results as sustainable materials for improving the chemical, mechanical, durability, and rheological properties of asphalt binders and mixtures while also reducing the environmental degradation brought about by the disposal of these by-products. This study reviews research efforts on mining by-products (specifically steel slag, silica fume, red mud, and fly ash) in asphalt concrete pavement construction, analyzing the existing research, with emphasis on their various applications in asphalt concrete, their benefits as sustainable asphalt concrete materials, and limitations connected to their use. This review concludes by providing future directions in the utilization of these mining by-products in asphalt concrete production. This review contributes to the development of cost-effective, eco-friendly, and high-performance road construction materials, helping the transition to sustainable infrastructure. Full article

Reinforced concrete is the most widely utilized building material for bridges, buildings, and other infrastructure components, and its longevity is significantly influenced by corrosion or rust. Corrosion shortens reinforced concrete’s service life and safety, which raises maintenance expenses. Concrete is a porous material that allows air and water to pass through, and corrosion begins when the air and water reach the steel. This study evaluated the mechanical and corrosion resistance properties of reinforced concrete containing recycled and supplemented cementitious materials. The results showed that mixtures containing fine glass aggregate, glass powder, slag, fly ash, or silica fume significantly improved the compressive, tensile, and flexural strengths, but the 10% slag mix, and 5% glass aggregate with 10% glass powder with 10% fly ash mix produced the best results overall. In addition, the mixture containing 15% fly ash produced the best result against corrosion. The corrosion tests revealed that mixtures with 10% slag and 20% glass powder also significantly enhanced the corrosion resistance of steel with the same results, confirming their effectiveness in reducing the permeability and increasing the durability of reinforced concrete. Concrete cracks and sulfate degradation severely compromise structural durability, highlighting the need for sustainable solutions to enhance longevity and minimize environmental impact. This study assesses the efficacy of bacterial self-healing technology utilizing Bacillus megaterium (BM) and Bacillus sphaericus (BS) in enhancing the resistance of concrete to sulfate attacks and improving its mechanical properties. Bacterial suspensions (1% and 2.5% of cement weight) were mixed with concrete containing silica fume or fly ash (10% of cement weight) and cured in freshwater or sulfate solutions (2%, 5%, and 10% concentrations). Specimens were tested for compressive strength, flexural strength, and microstructure using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) at various ages. The results indicate that a 2.5% bacterial content yielded the best performance, with BM surpassing BS, enhancing compressive strength by up to 41.3% and flexural strength by 52.3% in freshwater-cured samples. Although sulfate exposure initially improved early-age strength by 1.97% at 7 days, it led to an 8.5% loss at 120 days. Bacterial inclusion mitigated sulfate damage through microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP), sealing cracks, and bolstering durability. Cracked specimens treated with BM recovered up to 93.1% of their original compressive strength, promoting sustainable, sulfate-resistant, self-healing concrete for more resilient infrastructure. The resource utilization of construction waste and industrial solid waste is a crucial aspect in promoting global urbanization and sustainable development. This study focuses on the preparation of mine backfill materials using construction waste in combination with various industrial solid wastes—ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS), fly ash (FA), silica fume (SF), phosphorus slag (PS), fly ash–phosphorus slag–phosphogypsum composite (FA-PS-PG), and fly ash–phosphorus slag–β-phosphogypsum composite (FA-PS-βPG)—under different substitution rates (50%, 55%, 60%) as control parameters. A total of 19 mix proportions were investigated, evaluating their slump, dry density, compressive strength, uniaxial compressive stress–strain relationship, micromorphology, and phase composition. The results indicate that, compared to backfill materials prepared with pure cement, the incorporation of industrial solid wastes improves the fluidity of the backfill materials. At 56 days, the constitutive model parameter a increased to varying degrees, while parameter b decreased, indicating enhanced ductility. The compressive strength was consistently higher with PS at all substitution rates. The FA-PS-PG mixture with a 50% substitution rate achieved the highest 56-day compressive strength of 8.02 MPa. These findings can facilitate the application of construction waste and industrial solid waste in mine backfilling projects, delivering economic, environmental, and resource-related benefits. The combined application of fibers and lightweight aggregates (LWAs) represents an effective approach to achieving high-strength, lightweight concrete. To enhance the predictability of the mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC), this study conducts an in-depth investigation into its hydration characteristics. In this study, high-strength LWAC was developed by incorporating low water absorption LWAs, various volume fractions of basalt fiber (BF) (0.1%, 0.2%, and 0.3%), and a ternary cementitious system consisting of 70% cement, 20% fly ash, and 10% silica fume. The hydration-related properties were evaluated through isothermal calorimetry test and high-temperature calcination test. The results indicate that incorporating 0.1–0.3% fibers into the cementitious system delays the early hydration process, with a reduced peak heat release rate and a delayed peak heat release time compared to the control group. However, fitting the cumulative heat release over a 72-h period using the Knudsen equation suggests that BF has a minor impact on the final degree of hydration, with the difference in maximum heat release not exceeding 3%. Additionally, the calculation model for the final degree of hydration in the ternary binding system was also revised based on the maximum heat release at different water-to-binder ratios. The results for chemically bound water content show that compared with the pre-wetted LWA group, under identical net water content conditions, the non-pre-wetted LWA group exhibits a significant reduction at three days, with a decrease of 28.8%; while under identical total water content conditions it shows maximum reduction at ninety days with a decrease of 5%. This indicates that pre-wetted LWAs help maintain an effective water-to-binder ratio and facilitate continuous advancement in long-term hydration reactions. Based on these results, influence coefficients related to LWAs for both final degree of hydration and hydration rate were integrated into calculation models for degrees of hydration. Ultimately, this study verified reliability of strength prediction models based on degrees of hydration. Full article

Mining by-products present both an environmental challenge and a resource opportunity. This review investigates their potential application in road pavement construction, focusing on materials such as fly ash, slag, sulphur, red mud, tailings, and silica fume. Drawing from laboratory and field studies, the review examines their roles across pavement layers—subgrade, base, subbase, asphalt mixtures, and rigid pavements—emphasising mechanical properties, durability, moisture resistance, and ageing performance. When properly processed or stabilised, many of these wastes meet or exceed conventional performance standards, contributing to reduced use of virgin materials and greenhouse gas emissions. However, issues such as variability in composition, leaching risks, and a lack of standardised design protocols remain barriers to adoption. This review aims to consolidate current research, evaluate practical feasibility, and identify directions for future studies that would enable the responsible and effective reuse of mining waste in transportation infrastructure. This study focuses on the development of high-performance composite cementitious materials for offshore engineering applications, addressing the critical challenges of durability, environmental degradation, and carbon emissions. By incorporating polycarboxylate superplasticizers (PCE) and combining fly ash (FA), ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS), and silica fume (SF) in various proportions, composite mortars were designed and evaluated. A series of laboratory tests were conducted to assess workability, mechanical properties, volume stability, and durability under simulated marine conditions. The results demonstrate that the optimized composite exhibits superior performance in terms of strength development, shrinkage control, and resistance to chloride penetration and freeze–thaw cycles. Microstructural analysis further reveals that the enhanced performance is attributed to the formation of additional calcium silicate hydrate (C–S–H) gel and a denser internal matrix resulting from secondary hydration. These findings suggest that the proposed material holds significant potential for enhancing the long-term durability and sustainability of marine infrastructure. Full article

Four Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) variants were systematically developed: Baseline GPR with manual optimization, Expert Knowledge GPR employing domain-driven dual-kernel architecture, GPR with Automatic Relevance Determination (GPR-ARD) for feature selection, and GPR-OptCorrosion featuring specialized multi-component composite kernels. The models were trained and validated using 180 carbonated mortar specimens with 15 systematically categorized variables spanning mixture, material, environmental, and electrochemical parameters. GPR-OptCorrosion achieved superior performance (R2 = 0.9820, RMSE = 1.3311 μA/cm2), representing 44.7% relative improvement in explained variance over baseline methods, while Expert Knowledge GPR and GPR-ARD demonstrated comparable performance (R2 = 0.9636 and 0.9810, respectively). Contrary to conventional approaches emphasizing electrochemical indicators, automatic relevance determination revealed supplementary cementitious materials (silica fume and fly ash) as dominant predictive factors. All advanced models exhibited excellent generalization (gaps < 0.02) and real-time efficiency (<0.006 s), with probabilistic uncertainty quantification enabling risk-informed infrastructure management. This research contributes to advancing machine learning applications in corrosion engineering and provides a foundation for predictive maintenance strategies in concrete infrastructure. Full article

The demand for super-tall buildings and long-span bridges has driven concrete development toward higher strength and durability. Therefore, this study investigated the impact of composition of materials (aggregates, admixtures, and steel fibers) on the mechanical performance and economic feasibility of coarse aggregate reactive powder concrete (CA-RPC). The goal is to identify optimal combinations for both performance and cost. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and pore structure analysis were used to assess microstructural characteristics. The results demonstrated that replacing quartz sand with yellow sand as the fine aggregate in CA-RPC effectively reduced construction costs without compromising compressive strength. The use of basalt as the coarse aggregate led to higher mechanical strength compared to limestone. Incorporating 20% fly ash reduced the 7-day compressive strength, while the 28-day strength remained unaffected. The addition of 10% silica fume showed no obvious effect on the early strength but significantly improved the 28-day strength and workability of the concrete. Moreover, the incorporation of steel fibers improved the flexural strength and structural integrity of CA-RPC, shifting the failure mode from brittle fracture to a more ductile cracking behavior. SEM observations and pore structure analyses revealed that the admixtures altered the hydration products and pore distribution, thereby affecting the mechanical performance. This study provides valuable insights into the strength development and underlying mechanisms of CA-RPC, offering a theoretical basis for its practical application in bridge deck pavement and tunnels. The concrete industry increasingly seeks sustainable alternatives to conventional materials to reduce the environmental impact while maintaining structural performance. This study evaluates the use of locally sourced rhyolite as a coarse aggregate combined with recycled supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) to address the sustainability and durability. Due to its high silica content, rhyolite is prone to the alkali–silica reaction (ASR), which may affect concrete durability. Concrete mixtures incorporating rhyolite with silica fume (SF), Class F fly ash (FA), and slag cement (SC) were tested for compressive strength, porosity, density, absorption, mortar bar expansion, electrical resistivity, and rapid chloride permeability. All rhyolite-based mixtures—regardless of SCM incorporation—achieved higher 90-day compressive strengths than the conventional control mixture, with 10% SF reaching the highest value. Additionally, each recycled SCM effectively reduced ASR-induced expansion, with 20% FA showing the most significant reduction and superior durability, including the greatest decrease in chloride permeability and the highest electrical resistivity, indicating enhanced corrosion resistance. These results confirm that rhyolite aggregates, when combined with SCMs, can improve durability and reduce ASR. Therefore, rhyolite shows potential for use in structural concrete under standard exposure conditions. This strategy supports circular economy goals by incorporating regional and recycled materials to develop concrete with improved durability characteristics. Full article
