For centuries, Scaptotrigona mexicana honey has been treasured in Mexico, where pre-Columbian cultures harvested it not only for its sweet flavor but also for its medicinal and ceremonial purposes. Today, it remains a high-value product in local markets, prized above Apis mellifera honey for its unique sensory qualities and traditional health benefits. Yet its scientific characterization and functional potential remain underexplored. In this study, twenty-four samples from diverse regions were analyzed to quantify bioactive compounds and determine physicochemical composition, α-amylase inhibition, and antioxidant activity. Non-parametric statistical tests revealed distinct compositional clusters, with samples from Cruz Blanca showing exceptional phenolic content and stronger α-amylase inhibition (5.6–49.2%). Antioxidant capacity correlated positively with phenols and flavonoids, showing moderate effect sizes for ABTS (η2 = 0.49) and DPPH (η2 = 0.37). Compared with Apis mellifera honey, Scaptotrigona mexicana contained more moisture, free acidity, phenols, and antioxidants, but less diastase, hydroxymethylfurfural, and reducing sugars. Importantly, natural α-amylase inhibitors can help modulate postprandial glucose, offering dietary support for type 2 diabetes management. Kinetic analyses (EC50, Vmax, and Km) suggested mixed inhibition. These findings highlight Scaptotrigona mexicana as both a heritage product and a promising functional ingredient for developing foods that merge tradition with metabolic health innovation. The historic landscape and the value of the ancient city in the stock era present a diversified and mixed problem; as such, this study explores a quantifiable spatial correlation method for landscape layering characteristics and value space, in order to provide support for the urban renewal paths that integrate historical and contemporary needs. Taking as an example Chaozhou Ancient City, a renowned historical and cultural city in China, this study draws on the theory of historical urban landscape layering and comprehensively uses historical graphic interpretation, GIS spatial quantitative analysis, the single-land-use dynamic degree model, the Analytic Network Process, and the Delphi method to quantitatively analyze and evaluate the landscape layering characteristics and value space of the ancient city. Meanwhile, it explores the relationship between the historical landscape layering characteristics and value space of ancient cities using the spatial autocorrelation model and the coupling coordination modulus model. The key findings are as follows: (1) The high-layer space (66.1%) and high-value space (31.1%) of the historic landscape of Chaozhou Ancient City show significant mismatch and imbalance. Spatially, layer spaces increase from the city center toward the periphery, whereas value spaces decrease from the center outward, demonstrating marked spatial heterogeneity. (2) The layer–value space shows a spatial distribution of agglomeration, with Moran’s I index values of 0.2712 and 0.6437, respectively. The agglomeration degree of the value space is much higher than that of the layer space, and both show significant non-equilibrium and associative coupling. (3) Coupling coordination: basically balanced (D = 0.56) indicates a transition toward a more integrated state, although 48% of the region remains in a state of severe dysfunction, mainly consisting of two types of spaces: “high-layer–high-value” and “low-layer–low-value.” These two dysfunctional types should be prioritized in future conservation and renewal strategies. This study provides a more comprehensive quantitative analysis path for identifying and evaluating the landscape layer–value space of the ancient city, providing visualization tools and decision-making support for the future protection and renewal of Chaozhou Ancient City and the declaration of the World Heritage. This paper outlines the implementation and core results of a combined archaeological, historical, and ethnographic study of the histories of well construction and water management among Boran, Gabra, and Rendille pastoralists in arid and semi-arid areas of Northern Kenya and Southern Ethiopia. Co-developed with representatives from different local communities from the outset, this project sought to document the spatial distribution of different types of hand-dug wells found across the study areas, their associated oral histories and, if possible, establish through archaeological means their likely date of initial construction. Concurrent with addressing these academic objectives, this project aimed to train a cohort of local heritage stewards in archaeological, historical, and ethnographic data collection and interpretation, equipping them with the necessary skills to monitor sites of heritage value and further record additional elements of the tangible and intangible heritage of the study areas. This paper discusses the archaeological work that the community trainees participated in, the strategies developed with them to create wider awareness of this heritage, and its implications for identifying ways to ”weather” climate change in the future. The evolution of traditional rural settlements is a dynamic process. During urbanization, traditional rural settlements, as dual carriers of natural and cultural heritage, face the structural contradiction between preservation and development. The 2008 Wenchuan earthquake caused systemic damage to the Linpan settlements in western Sichuan. The post-seismic reconstruction (2008-) and rural revitalization (2017-) phases have offered a unique case for exploring sustainable cultural landscape patterns. This study innovatively devises a “preservation–development” dual-system evaluation framework. Using the coupling coordination degree model, it analyzes the characteristics of Linpan at different stages within a composite cultural–economic–social system. The study found that while tangible carriers can be quickly repaired through financial support, intangible culture is often at risk of losing its inheritors. Over 60% of Linpan depend on government support, exposing the fragility of “dependence-based development”, and few achieve high-quality “preservation–development” synergy (coupling coordination degree D > 0.8). Most remain in a “preservation lag–development obstruction” cycle (D < 0.5). This paper explores ways to balance Linpan preservation and development dynamically and suggests creating a self-cycling “resource empowerment–cultural identity–value transformation” development pattern. It provides a theoretical reference for cultural heritage preservation and disaster resilience building and contributes a unique solution for the revitalization of traditional settlements. China boasts abundant geoheritage, including numerous paleontological geosites; however, many of these geosites are currently at high risk of degradation and face considerable challenges in protection and management. Using Liaoning Province as a case study, this study employs Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial analysis to conduct the systematic data mining of provincial paleontological geosites. We quantitatively examine their spatiotemporal distribution patterns, identify key natural and socio-economic factors influencing their spatial occurrence, and pinpoint areas at high risk of degradation. Results reveal that the distribution of paleontological geosites across prefectural-city, regional, and geological time scales is highly uneven, leading to significant disparities in scientific research, resource allocation, and geotourism development. Significant spatial correlations are observed between the locations of these geosites and natural parameters as well as socio-economic indicators, providing a theoretical foundation for designing targeted conservation measures and precise management strategies. Based on these findings, the study proposes a multi-scale geoheritage conservation framework for Liaoning, which systematically addresses protection strategies across three distinct dimensions: at the prefectural-level city scale, through precise basic management, systematic investigation, and differentiated protection measures; at the regional scale, by enhancing collaborative mechanisms and establishing an integrated conservation network; and at the geological time scale, by deepening value recognition and promoting forward-looking conservation initiatives. This study not only offers tailored recommendations for conserving paleontological heritage in Liaoning, but also presents a transferable research model for other regions rich in paleontological resources worldwide, thereby bridging the gap between geoheritage conservation needs and practical solutions. Given its considerable cultural, historical, and economic value, built heritage requires the application of modern techniques for effective documentation and conservation. While multiple sensors are available for 3D modeling, laser scanning remains the most commonly employed due to its efficiency, precision, and ability to comprehensively capture the building’s geometry, surface textures, and structural details. This results in highly detailed 3D representations that are very important for accurate documentation, analysis, and conservation planning. This study investigates the complementary potential of different 3D modeling approaches for the digital representation of the Dosoftei House in Iasi, a monument of historical significance. For this purpose, an integrated point cloud was created based on a mobile hand-held laser scanner (HMLS), i.e., the FJD Trion P1 and a terrestrial laser scanner (TLS), i.e., the Maptek I-Site 8820 long-range laser scanner, the latter specifically used to capture the roof structures. Based on this dataset, a parametric model was created in Revit, supported by panoramic images, allowing for a structured representation useful in technical documentation and heritage management. In parallel, a mesh model was generated in CloudCompare using Poisson surface reconstruction. The comparison of the two methods highlights the high geometric accuracy of the mesh model and the Building Information Modeling (BIM) model’s capability to efficiently manage information linked to architectural elements. While the mesh provides detailed geometry, the BIM model excels in information organization and supports informed decision-making in conservation efforts. This research proposes leveraging the advantages of both methods within an integrated workflow, applicable on a larger scale in architectural heritage conservation projects. Full article

Rapid regional development and intensified human activities increasingly disturb ecosystems, posing substantial threats to the integrity of large-scale ecological zones. As a World Natural Heritage site and a crucial national ecological zone, the Zhangjiajie Scenic Area plays a pivotal role in China’s environmental conservation efforts. To comprehensively assess tourism ecological security in the Scenic Area and strengthen the scientific basis for resource management and policymaking, this study developed a multi-dimensional ecological security evaluation system covering 2010–2024, incorporating dynamic changes in perturbation, reaction, and governance. Using entropy weight–TOPSIS and coupling coordination models, combined with obstacle degree analysis, we examined the temporal trajectory of ecological security and analyzed its underlying driving mechanisms. The study also examined factors influencing the sustainable development of the ecosystem. The results indicate the following: (1) Tourism ecological security in the Scenic Area followed a V-shaped trajectory of “rapid degradation—steady recovery—impact and rebound.” It declined sharply to an unsafe level between 2010 and 2014, steadily recovered from 2015 to 2019, briefly dropped in 2020, and then rebounded, reaching a peak evaluation value of 0.519 in 2024. (2) The co-evolution of perturbation, reaction, and governance subsystems has matured: their coupling coordination degree has increased annually and has remained at the level of “intermediate coordination” since 2020. The reaction subsystem plays a central role, serving as a bridge between perturbation and governance. (3) The driving factors exhibit a phased evolutionary pattern of “elements—facilities—structure—function.” Cultivated land area, total road mileage, and artificial afforestation area constitute the main long-term constraints. This research provides important insights for strengthening ecological security and sustainability in the Scenic Area while advancing regional ecosystem development. It also offers valuable guidance for ecological security management and policymaking in similar nature reserves. Full article

Architectural and cultural heritage play a key role in the sustainability of cities and their historic centres. A significant part of this heritage consists of residential buildings and rows of townhouses that were constructed in accordance with local traditions. These buildings line the streets and squares of cities and historic centres. This study explores the significance of this unique, traditional, uniform development in term of its historical and social-cultural value and its role in identifying the city. Using examples of cities where residential buildings with specific characteristics have been preserved, the study analyses their value in terms of cultural heritage and sustainable development, as well as various revitalisation models that consider local traditions and needs. The impact of multi-tracking and interdisciplinarity on revitalisation outcomes is also considered, with the action models in the selected centres analysed in terms of their strengths and weaknesses. In addition to tangible cultural heritage, the study also considers intangible heritage and its interrelationships. The research revealed the high value of historic residential architecture, which, together with the urban layout, forms an important part of our architectural cultural heritage. It also drew attention to the fact that this aspect of architectural heritage is often neglected. The studies also demonstrated the important role of local authorities, conservation organisations and urban communities, as well as the necessity of well-planned, multi-track, interdisciplinary revitalisation measures. The research enabled the formulation of some general principles to be taken into account in the revitalisation process. However, it was found that each city or town has different building traditions and a different degree of historic architectural preservation, as well as different opportunities. Therefore, it is not possible to create a universal, ready-made programme for historic preservation. Nevertheless, it is important to promote good models, particularly in residential architecture, which is often undervalued and neglected despite its great potential. Full article

This study investigates how Spanish heritage language (SHL) learners, and second language (L2) learners cognitively and socially engage with texts through collaborative digital annotations. Conducted in two advanced online writing courses with forty students, the study employed Perusall, a social annotation platform, to examine reading behaviors and peer interactions. Quantitative analysis revealed both similarities and differences in strategy use: while both groups demonstrated equal levels of interaction, SHL learners favored Evaluating and Connecting strategies, suggesting reflective, experience-based engagement, whereas L2 learners more frequently used Questioning and Translating strategies, indicating a more analytical approach. Survey responses further highlighted perceived gains in vocabulary, motivation, grammar, and academic language awareness. These findings challenge deficit-based assumptions about SHL literacy and underscore the value of integrating culturally relevant, digitally mediated tasks in language instruction. The study affirms that collaborative annotation not only fosters cognitive engagement but also promotes social presence and academic identity development. It offers practical recommendations for grouping, scaffolding, and platform use, and contributes to a broader understanding of how digital tools can support inclusive, meaningful reading experiences for diverse learners in the twenty-first-century classroom. Assessment of cultural ecosystem services (CESs) is a key component in advancing the sustainable development of urban ecosystems. Mapping the spatial distribution of CESs provides spatially explicit insights for urban landscape planning. However, most assessments lack regional adaptability, particularly in cities with pronounced environmental and cultural heterogeneity. To address this gap, this study focused on the central urban area of Lhasa, using communities as units to develop a tailored CES assessment framework. The framework integrated the MaxEnt model with multi-source indicators to analyze the spatial distribution of five CES categories and their relationships with environmental variables. Spatial statistics and classification at community level informed the CES spatial optimization strategies. Results indicated that high-value CES areas were predominantly concentrated in the old city cluster, typified by Barkhor and Jibenggang subdistricts, following an east–west spatial pattern along the Lhasa River. Distance to tourist spot contributed 78.3% to cultural heritage, 86.1% to spirit and religion, and 42.2% to ecotourism and aesthetic services, making it the most influential environmental variable. At the community level, CESs exhibited a distinct spatial gradient, with higher values in the central area and lower values in the eastern and western peripheries. For the ecotourism and aesthetic category, 61.47% of the community area was classified as low service, whereas only 1.48% and 7.33% were identified as excellent and high. Moreover, communities within subdistricts such as Barkhor and Zhaxi demonstrated excellent service across four CES categories, with notably lower performance in the health category. This study presents a quantitative and adaptable framework and planning guidance to support the sustainable development of CESs in cities with similar characteristics. Full article

Heritage landscapes endure not through the preservation of fixed forms but through the capacity to adapt to changing social, political, economic, and environmental conditions. Conservation policies that privilege static ideals of authenticity risk undermining the very systems they aim to protect. This paper advances a model of shared stewardship that links conservation of heritage to support for livelihoods, functional flexibility, and community authority in decision-making. Using the Ifugao Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordillera as a case study, we integrate archaeological, ethnographic, spatial, and agricultural economic evidence to examine the terraces as a dynamic socio-ecological system. Archaeological findings and oral histories show that wet-rice agriculture expanded in the 17th century, replacing earlier taro-based systems and incorporating swidden fields, managed forests, and ritual obligations. Contemporary changes such as the shift from heirloom tinawon rice to commercial crops, the impacts of labor migration, and climate variability reflect long-standing adaptive strategies rather than cultural decline. Comparative cases from other UNESCO and heritage sites demonstrate that economic viability, adaptability, and local governance are essential to sustaining long-inhabited agricultural landscapes. We thus argue that the Ifugao terraces, like their global counterparts, should be conserved as living systems whose cultural continuity depends on their ability to respond to present and future challenges. Miao embroidery holds significant cultural, economic, and aesthetic value. However, its transmission faces numerous challenges: a high learning threshold, a lack of interest among younger generations, and low production efficiency. These factors have created obstacles to its sustainable development. In the age of artificial intelligence (AI), generative AI is expected to improve the efficiency of pattern innovation and the adaptability of the embroidery industry. Therefore, this study proposes a Miao embroidery pattern generation and application method based on Stable Diffusion and low-rank adaptation (LoRA) fine-tuning. The process includes image preprocessing, data labeling, model training, pattern generation, and embroidery production. Combining objective indicators with subjective expert review, supplemented by feedback from local artisans, we systematically evaluated five representative Miao embroidery styles, focusing on generation quality and their social and business impact. The results demonstrate that the proposed model outperforms the original diffusion model in terms of pattern quality and style consistency, with optimal results obtained under a LoRA scale of 0.8–1.2 and diffusion steps of 20–40. Generated patterns were parameterized and successfully implemented in digital embroidery. This method uses AI technology to lower the skill threshold for embroidery training. Combined with digital embroidery machines, it reduces production costs, significantly improving productivity and increasing the income of embroiderers. This promotes broader participation in embroidery practice and supports the sustainable inheritance of Miao embroidery. It also provides a replicable technical path for the intelligent generation and sustainable design of intangible cultural heritage (ICH). Full article

This study integrates EEG technology with the VIKOR-GRA model to construct a quantitative method for assessing emotional responses to rural landscapes. Taking 94 scenes from Xiedian Ancient Village in Macheng City, Hubei Province, as the research objects, arousal (Arousal) and valence (Valence) were calculated based on the power ratio of α and β frequency bands. The entropy weight method was employed to determine weights and compute group utility value (S), individual regret value (R), and compromise solution (Q). The results indicate that 16 scenes had Q values > 0.75 (Grade IV), reflecting poor emotional experiences, with significantly lower arousal (−2.15 ± 0.38) and valence (−0.87 ± 1.02). Vegetation morphology and water visibility were identified as the primary limiting factors, while graphic symbols and historical culture exhibited strong positive feedback. Optimization strategies are proposed, providing a quantifiable technical pathway for the renewal of rural heritage landscapes. Full article

This study presents a comprehensive approach to risk management and planned preventative maintenance (PPM) for cultural heritage, focusing on the hypogeum archaeological site beneath the Chamber of Commerce in Rimini, Italy. Hypogeal environments pose unique conservation challenges due to their microclimates, biological threats, and structural vulnerabilities. Applying the ABC Method—developed by ICCROM and CCI—this research systematically identifies, analyzes, and prioritizes risks associated with agents of risks. The methodology was complemented by the Nara Grid to assess the site’s authenticity and cultural value, aiding in the delineation of risk areas and informing strategic conservation priorities. The study identifies efflorescence formation, flooding risks, and lack of management guidelines as extreme threats, proposing tailored treatments and practical interventions across multiple layers of control. Through environmental monitoring, empirical analysis, and a multidisciplinary framework, the research offers a replicable model for sustainable conservation and preventive heritage management in similar subterranean contexts. This paper introduces a general AI text review framework for the automated analysis of textual reviews using advanced natural language processing techniques. The framework uniquely integrates sentiment analysis, topic modeling, and abstractive summarization within a modular architecture. It leverages transformer-based models (e.g., DistilBERT and FASTopic), vector databases, and caching mechanisms to ensure scalability and real-time performance. To validate the general approach, we developed a domain-specific implementation, VisitorLens AI, which performs advanced textual analysis for Google Maps reviews of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kotor Fortress. We demonstrated that the designed system generates structured and actionable insights for both tourists and local authorities, and increases institutional capacity to evaluate UNESCO criteria compliance. Finally, we performed both quantitative and expert evaluations, demonstrating the high performance of our framework across NLP tasks. The outputs confirm the framework’s generalizability, robustness, and practical value across domains. Full article
