The 19th century Protestant missionary James Legge is acknowledged for his voluminous and Christianity-inflected translations of Chinese classics of “Three Teachings”, yet his rendition of Buddhist texts remains under-examined. This study analyzes whether a value of Western theology exists in his portrayal of the Chinese monk Fâ-hien in A Record of Buddhistic Kingdoms, where the pilgrim should emerge as a devout Buddhist, a pioneering explorer, and a morally sensitive figure. Legge foregrounded these facets through paratexts such as illustrations and footnotes, but also repeatedly framed Fâ-hien within a biblical interpretation by frequently drawing parallels between Christianity and Buddhism. At the textual level, he shifted the original first-person narrative to a third-person perspective, which weakened the emotional and spiritual sense of Fâ-hien’s journey. Legge’s scholarly competence in Chinese learning and his role as Oxford’s first Professor of Chinese determined his precise representation of the rich connotations of Fâ-hien’s image, balancing academic rigor with an orientation toward Great Britain’s colonial education and imperial interests. His Christo-Buddhist intervention in the paratexts, associating the primary text with Christian culture, reveals his underlying missionary purpose to evangelize China. To this end, this study reveals how religious translation served both missionary and scholarly ends, contributing to Western perceptions of Chinese religion while illustrating the broader power dynamics of Christian engagement with modern China. The publication of Richard Wilhelm’s German translation of the Daodejing in 1911 ignited a “Daoist enthusiasm” in German literary circles, offering spiritual solace to a generation disillusioned by World War I. This article explores the creative reception of Daoist thought by the German writer Klabund (1890–1928), arguing that he reinterpreted Daoism not merely as a philosophy but as a religious response to the spiritual and political crises of post-war Germany. Through a comparative analysis of Klabund’s Laotse. Sprüche and Wilhelm’s source text, this study reveals how Klabund, through the selection, reorganization, and substitution of key terms, constructs a “practicable faith” for his contemporaries. The article further examines how this reconstruction extends into his literary works: Li-Tai-Pe aestheticizes Daoist themes like “softness” and “water”, Dreiklang elevates Laozi to a “divine incarnation” within a syncretic religious framework alongside Christ and Buddha, and The Last Emperor applies Daoist political wisdom to critique imperial power. Klabund’s approach illustrates a unique model of cross-cultural dialogue, where ancient Eastern wisdom is transformed into a “revolution of the heart”, serving as a spiritual antidote to the modern Western crisis of faith. Situated within the field of modern Chinese political history, this study investigates the Late Qing New Policies (1901–1911) as a pivotal transition from a traditional tributary empire to a modern multi-ethnic nation-state. A critical limitation in current scholarship is the tendency to reduce these reforms to mere expedients for dynastic preservation, thereby overlooking the complex mechanisms by which they fundamentally reconstructed national identity and interethnic power structures amidst the “triple crisis” of territory, sovereignty, and nationality. To address this, the article employs a comprehensive historical analysis to explore how institutional restructuring in administration, military, and ideology catalyzed the transformation from imperial autocracy toward a “responsible government” framework. The research is distinguished by its innovative application of Anthony D. Smith’s theories of “ethnic” versus “civic” nationalism to deconstruct the “myth-symbol complex” of the Chinese nation, bridging the theoretical divide between the “New Qing History” paradigm and empirical modernization narratives. Findings demonstrate that while the Manchu leadership aimed to secure formal primacy, the practical implementation of reforms engendered a de facto Han-supported power structure, compelling the reconceptualization of the state as a “multi-ethnic constitutional monarchy” and establishing the institutional logic for the “Five Races Under One Union” model. Consequently, this study offers significant academic value by redefining the New Policies as the foundational phase of modern China, providing a crucial theoretical framework for understanding the continuity of China’s multi-ethnic statehood and national identity beyond the dynastic collapse. Global climate policy requires constant attention due to shifting interests and alliances between national negotiators. Whether represented at global or national scales, three universal features of fused climate policy conjoin the wealthy and emerging G20 economies that are historically responsible for the most greenhouse gas emissions. The former are represented by G7 Western powers—the United States, Europe, United Kingdom, Japan, and Canada—and the latter are centered on the fast-expanding ‘BRICS’ bloc: Brazil–Russia–India–China–South Africa (2010–2023), new members Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates, and potentially also Saudi Arabia (a member invitee), along with ten new ‘partners’ designated in 2024, many of which have carbon-intensive economies. Although conflicts regularly arise—especially over emissions-related trade policy and climate financing—and although Donald Trump’s exit from United Nations climate politics profoundly disrupted the usually coherent G7 bloc, the consensual principles uniting these diverse Western and BRICS governments at multilateral climate summits include the following: (1) not cutting corporate, state, and household emissions to the extent necessary for avoiding unmanageable planetary disasters, in the process denying effective ways of leaving fossil fuels underground (by reimbursing poor countries); (2) not pricing carbon properly or acknowledging their economies’ ‘climate debt’; and (3) instead promoting carbon trading and offset mechanisms. The implications are important for alliance-formation involving climate-victimized, low-income countries and climate justice activists, alike. In sum, there is an increasingly urgent rationale to transcend ‘Global North’ and ‘Global South’ dichotomies and instead consider climate (like many other aspects of G7-BRICS relations) with a perspective open to critique of the imperial–subimperial fusions, not only oft-assumed frictions. This article examines Daniel 10 as a key witness to the formation of early Jewish apocalyptic literature. The chapter portrays Daniel as a sage whose encounter with a celestial messenger prepares him to guide his community. Narratively, this scene introduces the final revelation of Daniel 11–12; ideologically, it expresses the authors’ conviction that access to the heavenly realm is achieved through scribal discipline and engagement with inherited traditions. The study advances two related contributions. Drawing on recent reassessments of apocalyptic origins—especially insights from Aramaic texts at Qumran—the study offers a new analysis of intertextuality in Daniel 10, highlighting how apocalyptic writing predates the persecutions of Antiochus IV and is developed through the reinterpretation of authoritative Scriptures in the Persian and Hellenistic periods. Daniel’s profile aligns with elite temple-based scribes who operated across imperial and cultic settings and used apocalyptic discourse in intra-Judean power struggles. In addition, the reference to the Tigris in Dan 10:4 is reinterpreted in light of Seleucia-on-Tigris, whose culturally hybrid environment illuminates the cosmopolitan backdrop of the maśkîlîm traditions. This paper takes the interaction between late-Ming Jesuits and Chinese City God (chenghuang, 城隍) worship as a case study, employing the “Great Tradition/Little Tradition” framework to examine the confrontation between “humans-becoming-gods” and “God-creating-angels”. It argues that the Confucian Great Tradition integrated popular beliefs through using the divine way to implement moral instruction (shendao shejiao, 神道設教), maintaining state–religion unity and a monistic cosmology. By contrast, Catholicism, centered on monotheism and a transcendent God, reallocated mystical power from imperial and local deities to the Christian God, thus implicitly reconstructing traditional Chinese knowledge systems under an apparent compromise. The article concludes that Catholicism in late Ming China signified not merely religious transmission but also the penetration of a transcendent God-concept and a dualistic cosmology dividing the otherworldly from the this-worldly into China’s this-worldly monistic cosmology, thereby clarifying the intellectual tensions revealed by the Jesuit encounter with Chinese cosmology. The Fozu tongji 佛祖統紀 (Comprehensive Records of the Buddha and Patriarchs), compiled by the Tiantai monk Zhipan 志磐 during the Song dynasty, is a seminal work in the history of historiography. This article focuses on its inclusion process during the Ming dynasty, revealing the interplay between textual transmission and political power. Through primary source analysis and textual criticism, this article examines how the Fozu tongji became included in Ming court editions of the Buddhist Canon. Two main conclusions emerge: First, the Fozu tongji—a text documenting the history of the Tiantai school—was formally included through advocacy by Puqia 溥洽 of the seng lu si 僧錄司 (Buddhist Registry Office), signifying the imperial rulers’ recognition of the Tiantai school. Second, to align with state ideology, all prophecy-related content was systematically eliminated from the original text. This case study provides a window into practices of religious governance in the early Ming Dynasty. Furthermore, it enriches the scholarly understanding of the dissemination history of the Fozu tongji and also provides broader insights on the inclusion of Buddhist texts. While inclusion in the canon elevated the Fozu tongji’s influence, the text was altered under the ideological “purification” imposed by the state. Full article

The idea of hell entails a type of extramundane retribution, and such extramundane retribution is useful as a deterrent to antisocial behaviour. This functionalist view of extramundane retribution was, in fact, explicitly countenanced during pre-imperial China. Also, like many roughly contemporaneous pre-Christian cultures in western Eurasia, pre-imperial China had a notion of an “underworld”. For early China, then, the more relevant “problem of hell” might be this one: why does hell appear to be so marginal? This paper surveys the idea of hell in the pre-Qin and Han periods, and concludes that an answer may be found in the Ruist appropriation of Zhou ideas about acquisition of virtue-power (de) and the afterlife, which were promulgated as state orthodoxy during the Han. With the fall of the Han, however, this state orthodoxy crumbled, and the culturally-adaptive memetic power of hell reasserted itself in the interdynastic and Tang periods. During these periods, a mélange of Buddhist and Daoist ideas of hell more strongly informed popular belief, and the idea of hell was arguably thereafter marginal in appearance only. Full article

The cultural heritage of the Liao dynasty in Chifeng encompasses significant historical and cultural information that requires systematic digital preservation and management. However, heterogeneous data sources across museums, archives, and research institutions lack semantic interoperability, creating barriers for cross-system integration and knowledge discovery. This study proposes a standardized knowledge graph construction method by integrating the CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model version 7.2 with large language models. A unified ontology framework enables semantic consistency across diverse heritage data, while Generative Pre-trained Transformer-based models automatically extract structured triples from unstructured texts through prompt engineering and entity disambiguation, with the resulting knowledge graph implemented in Neo4j graph database. The constructed knowledge graph integrates 106 immovable cultural heritage records from Chifeng City with approximately 20 types of semantic relationships, forming a comprehensive semantic network covering people, places, events, time, and materials. K-means clustering reveals five cultural value themes, including “Nomadic Imperial Power System” and “Multi-Capital Governance Network”, while geospatial mapping identifies a “dual-core and ring-belt” distribution pattern for heritage protection zoning. This research demonstrates how international semantic standards can be integrated with artificial intelligence technologies to enable interoperable cultural heritage knowledge systems, providing practical implications for cross-institutional heritage management and archaeological survey planning. As tangible relics of modern colonial history, Manchurian regime (Manchukuo) architecture of Changchun possesses both historical commemorative value and tourism and cultural functions. Public perception and sentiment regarding this heritage in the contemporary social media context are key dimensions for evaluating the effectiveness of cultural regeneration. Existing research on Manchurian regime architecture has focused primarily on historical research and architectural form analysis, with limited research examining the diverse public interpretations of its cultural value through multi-platform social media data. This study aims to systematically explore the public’s cognitive characteristics, sentimental attitudes, and themes of interest regarding Changchun’s Manchurian regime architecture using online ethnographic data, providing empirical support for optimizing cultural regeneration pathways for Manchurian regime architectural heritage. The study collected data from 1 January 2020 to 20 September 2025, using the keyword “Changchun Manchurian regime architecture”. Using Python crawlers, the study extracted 334 original videos and 18,156 related comments from Douyin, Ctrip, and Dianping. The analysis was conducted using word frequency statistics, SnowNLP sentiment analysis, LDA topic modeling, and multidimensional visualization. The study found that (1) word frequency statistics show that the public has multiple concerns about the historical symbols, geographical positioning, cultural and tourism functions, and national emotions of Manchurian regime architecture; (2) SnowNLP analysis shows that positive comments account for 71%, neutral comments account for 11%, and negative comments account for 18%; (3) the optimal number of topics was determined to be five through perplexity and consistency indicators, namely “historical narrative and imperial power symbols”, “emotional experience and historical reflection”, “visit experience and service facilities”, “site distribution and regional space”, and “explanation and tour evaluation”; (4) the corpus can be divided into five time period stages, namely S1 (2020)–S5 (2024–2025), reflecting the shift in public attention from “space-facilities” to in-depth reflection on “emotion-history”. Five centuries ago, the Gibraltar Strait was emerging as the border zone between the core and the periphery of the modern/colonial world-system—a liminal position it continues to occupy today. During this period, Muslims on the southern shore of the Strait resisted the Portuguese and Spanish imperialism which was supported by several other Western European powers as well as the Catholic Papacy. This paper examines the life of Sayyida al-Ḥurra (c. 1491–c. 1552), who played an active role in this resistance, as Governor of the city-state of Tétouan and eventually Queen of Morocco. It summarizes years of transdisciplinary research about her life, which draws upon historical sources and popular narratives, as well as fieldwork in Northern Morocco and Southern Spain. The main finding of this research is that Sayyida al-Ḥurra is an early modern Muslim decolonial exemplar who remains significant today. She embodied an alternate way of being a ruler, a warrior, a woman, and a Muslim. Remembering her life can inspire contemporary decolonial thought, since the very fact of her existence unsettles modern colonial formations of race, ethnicity, governance, war, gender, and religion. Addressing crop responses to drought and nitrogen stress is crucial for improving resilience and ensuring sustainable agriculture under changing climatic conditions. This study investigates the physiological responses of wheat (Videodur [DU], Sensas [SW]) and barley (Tiroler Imperial [SG1], Amidala [SG2]) cultivars to drought and nitrogen stress during early reproductive to full maturity stages (BBCH 70 to 90) using infrared (IR) and visible near-infrared–shortwave infrared (VNIR-SWIR) hyperspectral imaging. Evapotranspiration (ET) and respiration were analyzed as functions of mean plant temperature (Tplant), light intensity, plant water status (indicated by the Normalized Difference Water Index, NDWI), and air humidity. Results revealed that drought stress significantly reduced NDWI and ET while increasing Tplant, with wheat cultivars showing greater sensitivity to water deficit. Barley, particularly SG2, exhibited superior water retention and thermal regulation, highlighting its potential for drought resilience with consistently higher NDWI values and lower Tplant. Temporal analysis identified the reproductive stage as the most vulnerable to stress, with a sharp decline in NDWI and rise in Tplant, emphasizing the need for stage-specific interventions. Regression models explained 74% of ET variance and 67% of respiration variance, underscoring the predictive power of NDWI and Tplant as proxies for plant water status and metabolic activity. Real-time evapotranspiration (ET) measurements using a balance during precision watering further validated the predictive capabilities of NDWI and Tplant. These findings provide valuable insights into growth stage-specific breeding programs and sustainable crop management strategies under environmental stress conditions. Full article

This paper revisits Saudi Arabia’s religious statecraft through the lens of Pax Wahhabica, interrogating the transnational diffusion, strategic reconfiguration, and evolving instrumentalisation of Wahhabism as a modality of imperial theopolitics and a conduit of ideological projection. Tracing Wahhabism from its eighteenth-century roots, through its Cold War entrenchment as a bulwark against secular nationalism, to its post-9/11 fragmentation, this study offers a conceptual re-evaluation of Wahhabism not as a fixed theological doctrine but as a malleable constellation of norms and discourses continuously calibrated to state interest. Theoretically anchored in soft power analysis, constructivist norm diffusion, Gramscian hegemony, and Foucauldian governmentality, this paper examines how religious norms are mobilised through affective discourse, institutional socialisation, and securitised governance to advance regime resilience. Through empirical case studies on Bosnia, Indonesia, and Nigeria, it elucidates how Wahhabi norms were localised, hybridised, and, in some instances, weaponised against their progenitors. Finally, this paper examines the domestic reconfiguration and international repositioning of Wahhabism under Muḥammad bin Salmān, arguing that contemporary Saudi theopolitics marks not the abandonment of Wahhabism but its reconversion into a strategically curated, domesticated ideology. Pax Wahhabica, thus, persists—not as an unbroken theological doctrine but as a hybrid ideational empire in which Islam is strategically retooled as an instrument of hegemonic statecraft. Full article

The objective of this article is to provide a critical analysis of maritime heterotopia as a category for reinterpreting ships, shipwrecks and maritime landscapes between the 16th and 18th centuries. Through an interdisciplinary approach combining history, underwater archaeology, heritage theory and literary analysis, it explores the ways in which maritime spaces, especially ships and shipwrecks, functioned as ‘other spaces’–following Foucault’s concept of heterotopia–in the articulation of imperial projects, power relations, experiences of transit and narratives of memory. A particular focus has been placed on the examination of shipwreck accounts, which are regarded as microhistories of human behaviour in contexts of crisis. These accounts have been shown to offer insights into alternative social structures, dynamics of authority, and manifestations of violence or solidarity. A review of the legal framework and practices related to shipwrecks in the Spanish Carrera de Indias is also undertaken, with particular emphasis on their impact on maritime legislation and international law. This article proposes a reading of maritime heritage as a symbolic and political device in constant dispute, where material remains and associated narratives shape collective memories, geopolitical tensions and new forms of cultural appropriation. Shipwrecks thus become sites of rupture and origin, charged with utopian, dystopian and heterotopic potential. Full article

Widely Targeted Metabolomic Analysis of Two Chinese Traditional Herbal Imperial Chrysanthemum Teas and In Vitro Evaluation of Their Hyperglycemia and Inflammation Enzyme Inhibitory Activities

Imperial chrysanthemum teas ‘Wuyuan Huangju’ (WYHJ) and ‘Jinsi Huangju’ (JSHJ), dried from the flowers of Chrysanthemum morifolium cv. Huangju, are traditional and popular herbal teas in China. However, their metabolite profiles and bioactivities remain unclear. In this study, we aimed to comprehensively elucidate the non-volatile and volatile metabolites of these two imperial chrysanthemum teas and assess their antioxidant activities and inhibitory effects on hyperglycemia and inflammation enzymes. Thus, we employed a widely targeted metabolomics approach based on UPLC-ESI-MS/MS and GC-MS/MS to characterize metabolite profiles of the two teas. In total, 1971 non-volatile and 1039 volatile metabolites were explored, and among these, 744 differential non-volatiles (classified into 11 categories) and 517 differential volatiles (classified into 12 categories) were identified. Further, 474 differential non-volatiles were upregulated in WYHJ, particularly flavonoids, terpenoids, and phenolic acids. In contrast, JSHJ exhibited a greater number of upregulated differential volatiles compared to WYHJ, contributing primarily to its sweet, fruity, and floral aroma. The results of scavenging activities towards DPPH·, ABTS·+, OH·, and reducing power demonstrated that both imperial chrysanthemum teas, especially WYHJ, displayed high antioxidant capacity. We also noted that WYHJ exhibited stronger α-amylase, α-glucosidase, xanthine oxidase, and lipoxygenase inhibitory effects owing to its high active substance content. Therefore, this study provides insights into the metabolites of Chinese traditional medicinal herbal teas and highlights strategies for the comprehensive development and utilization of these traditional plant resources.
