A Research on the Sustainable Impact of FTA Strategy on the Global Value Chain Embedding of Listed Enterprises in China

The Free Trade Area (FTA) strategy and the participation of enterprises in global value chains (GVCs) are important aspects of China’s high-quality economic development stage. This study matches trade data from the China Customs Import and Export database with information from listed firms in the CSMAR database, calculating the firms’ GVC embeddedness and the depth of trade agreements at the firm level. On this basis, this research employs a gravity model with fixed effects to empirically analyze the impact and mechanism of the FTA strategy on the embedding of Chinese listed firms in GVCs, utilizing data from 2000 to 2006. The results demonstrate that the FTA strategy substantially enhances the embeddedness of Chinese listed enterprises in GVCs. The heterogeneity analysis indicates that state-owned enterprises, those located in the central and western regions, manufacturing firms, and high-tech industry enterprises derive greater advantages from the FTA strategy in terms of their embeddedness in GVCs. Moreover, the mechanism analysis indicates that the FTA strategy enhances the embeddedness of enterprises in GVCs by increasing their technological innovation levels. Additionally, the internal control costs of enterprises negatively moderate the impact of the FTA strategy on their embedding in GVCs, and a “substitution effect” exists between asset operating efficiency and the FTA strategy in promoting the GVC embedding of listed firms. These findings provide empirical evidence and policy recommendations for the Chinese government to enhance the FTA strategy and sustainably improve the embeddedness of Chinese listed enterprises in GVCs. Based on sample data from A-share listed heavy polluters from 2012 to 2021, this paper adopts the double-difference method to explore the influence of the construction of national pilot zone for ecological conservation on the ESG performance of heavily polluting enterprises. Following several robustness tests, this study argues that the ESG performance of heavy-polluting companies is significantly enhanced by the construction of the national pilot zone for ecological conservation. Specifically, the construction of the pilot zone enhances the ESG performance of heavy polluters by easing financing constraints. The enhancing effect of the construction of the pilot zone on the ESG performance of heavy polluters is more prominent in terms of strengthening social responsibility and optimizing governance structure. Additionally, improving heavily polluting enterprises’ ESG performance is demonstrated to effectively enhance their financial performance. The facilitating effect of the construction of the pilot zone on ESG performance is more obvious among state-owned enterprises, enterprises with high media attention, enterprises established at a late stage, and enterprises with high-quality environmental information disclosure. This study offers an empirical foundation for the government to develop policies regarding the establishment of pilot zones and for heavily polluting enterprises to enhance their ESG performance. This paper presents a structured, expert-informed framework for inclusive waste management in marginalized urban areas (MUAs), addressing critical challenges at the intersection of environmental governance, infrastructure inequality, and social exclusion. The framework was developed through extensive consultations with 37 international experts and tested through a deployment plan piloted in Reșița, Romania. The framework is adaptable to site-specific realities and is intended to evolve annually based on monitoring and feedback. With a strong focus on community engagement, institutional coordination, and policy alignment, the framework lays out an incremental implementation path. The Reșița pilot demonstrates how targeted, participatory actions—ranging from stakeholder mobilization and tailored education to infrastructure enhancements and policy reforms—can drive sustainable improvements in waste management and civic inclusion. This study contributes to the literature on environmental justice and urban sustainability by providing a dynamic, scalable model that can be customized to diverse socio-spatial contexts. This study investigates whether and how the complexity of derivative use influences the stock price crash risk in China’s capital market, a critical question given the growing use of derivatives in emerging economies where governance structures and disclosure standards vary widely. While prior research has examined the binary effects of derivative usage, limited attention has been paid to the multidimensional complexity of such instruments and its informational consequences. Using a novel hand-collected dataset of annual reports from Chinese A-share-listed firms between 2010 and 2023, we develop and implement new indicators that capture both the economic complexity (diversity and scale) and accounting complexity (reporting dispersion and fair-value hierarchy) of derivative use. Our analysis shows that higher complexity is associated with a significantly lower likelihood of stock price crashes. This effect is especially pronounced in non-state-owned firms and those with weaker internal-control systems, suggesting that derivative complexity can enhance information transparency and serve as a substitute for other governance mechanisms. These findings challenge the conventional view that complexity necessarily increases opacity and highlight the importance of disclosure quality and institutional context in shaping the market consequences of financial innovation. Faced with mounting pressure to achieve high-quality green transformation, manufacturing enterprises are increasingly scrutinized for greenwashing behaviors. This study develops a novel hybrid modeling framework that combines evolutionary game theory with the SEIR epidemic model to investigate the dynamic interactions between environmental regulation, media pressure, and green innovation behavior. The model captures how strategic decisions among boundedly rational actors evolve over time under dual external pressures. Simulation results show that stronger environmental regulatory intensity accelerates the adoption of substantive green innovation and concurrently reduces the media pressure associated with greenwashing. Moreover, while social media disclosure has a limited impact during the early stages of greenwashing information diffusion, its influence becomes significantly amplified once a critical dissemination threshold is surpassed, rapidly transforming latent information into widespread public concern. This amplification triggers significant public opinion pressure, which, in turn, incentivizes local governments to enforce stricter environmental policies. The findings reveal a synergistic governance mechanism where environmental regulation and media scrutiny jointly curb greenwashing and foster genuine corporate sustainability. Full article

Natural history collections serve science and society in a variety of ways. Collections of geological, including paleontological, materials are of special importance in the 21st century, as they serve not only as repositories for scientific research specimens, but are also used in teaching, outreach, and engaging the public in science. These collections link us to our scientific, technological, and cultural history, and help to inspire the next generations of scientists and technologists. In addition, they provide inspiration for creative works. They also have an important role in informing public policy and national security, as geological materials are fundamental to the global economy. Examples from universities, museums, and government agencies in central Ohio, USA, help to illustrate the myriad ways that geological collections are relevant to modern society, and provide continuing, critical benefits. These examples reinforce the need to ensure the long-term support of collections. Full article

Globally, many countries have promulgated extensive, contextually relevant disability legislative policies for children with hearing impairment/d/Deafness (HI/d/D). The alignment of policies with their implementation, with robust monitoring, is essential for effective early intervention (EI) and early education (EE) outcomes. The study’s purpose was to review current South African EI and EE regulations, acts, and policies in relation to children with HI/d/D from birth to age six. An adapted Arksey and O’Malley framework with inductive thematic analysis was applied to synthesise and evaluate relevant information. Documentation was sourced between 1993 and 2023 from the official South African government portal and Google online searches using keywords. While 7976 documents were initially identified with the broad search and 1249 with a refined category search, only 17 met the specific inclusion criteria for policies referencing hearing impairment in early intervention and education. Seventeen documents were selected for study inclusion, with sixteen mentioning HI/d/D and multi-disciplinary, multi-sectoral, family-centred, culturally sensitive considerations superficially. One document from the Department of Health (DoH) specifically addressed early hearing detection and intervention (EHDI). Three main themes emerged, including Partnerships, Participation and Integration, Screening, Identification and/or Intervention, and Education/Special Education. Greater engagement with South African EI and education policies is essential to strengthen implementation, especially across sectors and at the community level. Mandating EHDI guidelines is critical to improving service delivery and ensuring smoother transitions between health, education, and social services for children with hearing impairment. Full article

Mountain forests in biodiversity hotspots show complex responses to climate and topographic gradients. However, the effect of synergistic controls of elevation and climate on Net Primary Productivity (NPP) dynamics remain insufficiently quantified in complex mountains. Southwest China’s mountains are Asia’s most biodiverse temperate region with pronounced vertical ecosystem stratification, representing a critical continental carbon sink. This study investigated the spatiotemporal dynamics and driving mechanisms of NPP in Southwest China’s typical mountain ecosystems over the past three decades using a high-resolution modeling framework integrated with relative importance analysis, a Geodetector, and an elevation-dependent model. The results showed that (1) NPP revealed a significant increasing trend, rising from 634 ± 325 to 748 ± 348 g C m−2 yr−1 (mean rate 4 g C m−2 yr−1) from 1990 to 2018. Spatially, the most rapid increases occurred in eastern regions. (2) Rising CO2 and climate warming (dominate 17% regions) drove interannual NPP growth, with elevation thresholds dictating driver dominance. The CO2 governed low elevation, while temperature controlled higher elevation (>4800 m). (3) The elevation-dependent model revealed a more complex and nonlinear relationship between NPP and elevation, identifying three distinct phases: the saturation phase (<500 m) with negligible decay of NPP; the transition phase (500–3500 m) with linear decline (NPP loss of 29 g C m⁻2 yr⁻1 per 100 m); and the collapse phase (>3500 m) with continuously attenuated NPP losses (NPP average loss of 10.5 g C m⁻2 yr⁻1 per 100 m) reflecting high-elevation vegetation adaptation to extreme conditions. (4) Land cover dominated NPP spatial heterogeneity and was amplified by interactions with elevation and temperature, highlighting a vegetation–climate–topography coupling mechanism that critically shapes productivity patterns. Biodiversity-rich widespread mixed forests underpinned the region’s high productivity. Mountain protection should focus on protecting existing evergreen forests from fragmentation, while forestation should prioritize the establishment of biodiversity-rich mixed forest. These findings established a comprehensive framework for spatiotemporal analysis of driving mechanisms and enhanced the understanding of NPP dynamics in complex mountain ecosystems, informing sustainable management priorities in mountain regions. Port shipping collaboration is vital to greener, more resilient trade, yet decisions remain siloed and uncertain. This study develops a Bayesian network model grounded in empirical data from major Chinese ports, aiming to systematically analyze and enhance port shipping collaborative capacity. The methodology integrates expert knowledge and structural learning algorithms to construct a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG), representing complex multi-stakeholder interactions among port enterprises, shipping companies, customers, and governmental bodies. Through forward and backward probabilistic inference, the study quantifies how coordinated improvements yield substantial synergistic benefits. Five leverage points stand out: customer engagement in green supply chains, perceived service quality, port digital information integration, multilateral trading maturity, and strict policy enforcement. A newly revealed feedback loop between digital integration and enforcement extends Emerson et al.’s collaborative governance framework, highlighting “digital-era connectivity” as a critical governance dimension and offering managers a focused, evidence-based action agenda. This study aims to explore the moderating role of corporate governance disclosures on the link between executive board gender diversity and financial performance. Governance disclosures were assessed based on executive managers’ information presented in the companies’ annual reports. The analysis was conducted on Romanian-listed companies from eight industries, covering a time range of ten years. Various robustness tests were used and examined the Blau index apart of the proportion of women managers, as well as different measures for financial performance. The endogeneity issue was solved by the Two-Stage Least Square method and the Generalized Method of Moments. The results revealed that a higher governance disclosure level on executive managers’ characteristics is reflected in increased financial performance. A positive influence was found for the composite financial performance indicator, return on assets, return on equity, and global solvency. Our findings led to the conclusion that the governance disclosure index moderates the relationship between board gender diversity and corporate business performance, and the effect of gender diversity on financial performance will be less positive with a higher level of disclosures on board characteristics. Therefore, managers can filter the quantity and quality of governance disclosure and can monitor the influence of the board’s composition on performance. Full article

Friction hysteresis, ingaphenomenon observed when a sliding contact is subjected to an oscillatory motion has significant implications in fields such as tribology and robotics. Understanding and quantifying friction hysteresis is essential for improving the performance and efficiency of many sliding contacts. In this paper, we introduce six non-dimensional groups to characterize and study friction hysteresis behaviour for rough conformal sliding contacts. The proposed non-dimensional groups are specifically designed to capture the essential features of friction hysteresis loops encountered based upon previous work of present authors. The non-dimensional groups are derived from a mixed friction model composed of the transient Reynolds equation, a statistical mixed friction contact model, and the load balance. The non-dimensional groups capture physical parameters that influence friction behaviour, including normal load, sliding speed, viscosity, density, and surface roughness. By expressing these parameters in non-dimensional form, the proposed groups provide a concise and generalizable framework for analysing friction hysteresis across different systems and scales. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the non-dimensional groups, we establish a comprehensive relationship between the proposed groups and typical friction hysteresis loops encountered. Through numerical simulations, we find relationships that govern the transition between different hysteresis loop shapes and sizes. This knowledge can inform the design and optimization of systems where friction hysteresis plays a crucial role. Full article

This study employs an evolutionary game theory framework to analyze the interactive learning, imitation, and strategic evolution among multiple actors within China’s aquatic product traceability system. It focuses on four types of strategic interactions: between fishers and the government, fishers and consumers, fishers who adopt the traceability system and those who do not, and between consumers who purchase traceable aquatic products and those who do not. The evolutionarily stable strategies and equilibrium outcomes in each game depend on the net benefits obtained and the various costs borne by each party. Among these factors, transaction costs within the traceability system play a particularly critical role in shaping stakeholder behavior. The lower the transaction costs, the more likely stakeholders are to adopt strategies that support or enhance the functioning of the system. Therefore, reducing the operational and transaction costs of the traceability system should be a key policy focus for the government. This includes efforts in policy and regulatory development, platform and infrastructure construction, and the improvement of information exchange mechanisms to foster sustainable development in aquaculture. Real aperture radar (RAR) can acquire the forward-looking target scene of interest continuously in scanning mode by arbitrary imaging geometry; however, the achievable angular resolution is predominantly governed by the physical dimensions of the antenna’s aperture. In contemporary radar imaging methodologies, the reconstruction of sparsely distributed targets can be effectively formulated as an L1-regularized optimization framework through the exploitation of a priori sparsity constraints, thereby enabling the generation of enhanced-resolution forward-looking radar imagery. Nevertheless, traditional target reconstruction methods based on the sparse regularization framework are implemented after batch data collection, which comes at the cost of significant operational complexity and storage space. To address this challenge, an online sparse reconstruction method based on a beam recursive-sliding (BRS) updating framework is proposed to achieve fast target reconstruction. First, the antenna measurement matrix is repaired to reduce the imaging edge information error. Then, due to the independence of the echo data within two beamwidths, a beam recursive updating method is proposed for each two beamwidths echo data by the structural properties of the repaired antenna measurement matrix. Finally, based on the proposed beam recursive updating method, a sliding updating approach is proposed for the whole imaging region to reduce the computational redundancy and storage requirement. This study presents an analytical description of the computed tomography-based volumetric additive manufacturing (VAM) process, with an emphasis on the impact of resin properties on product dimensions. The main issue addressed in this study is the assessment of the dimensional limitation of the objects produced using the VAM process, which is usually reported to be of the order of one centimeter. An analytical model is introduced to predict the product size based on the resin property (penetration depth—Dp), vial size (radius), and the duration of part formation, and the results indicate significant correlations among these parameters. A method of Dp measurement and analysis that is appropriate for the VAM process is also introduced. Mathematical justification is provided along with experimental verification for the effects of the main governing factor, Dp, on the maximum possible product size. Multiple criteria are also introduced for selecting the appropriate size of the resin container (vial) based on the desired object size and the value of Dp. It was found that the Dp is a crucial factor in analysis and experimentation in the VAM process, and its value is fundamentally different from the one obtained in the conventional polymerization AM methods. The product dimension based on the resin property, vial size, and time for the formation of the part is introduced by the analytical model. This model provides valuable insights into the complex interplay of factors influencing VAM outcomes and can facilitate informed decision-making in material selection and process design. Full article

Sustainable transboundary water governance in Central Asia faces significant challenges, including political tensions, ecological issues, such as the drying Aral Sea, and seasonal hydropower disruptions impacting downstream countries. This study aims to address these problems by examining the complexities of water resource governance in the region, emphasizing the interplay between national interests and regional cooperation. We analyze how social, economic, environmental, and political factors influence water diplomacy among Central Asian states. Key challenges include water scarcity, climate change impacts and the growing tensions over transboundary river basins, particularly in the Aral Sea basin (i.e., the development of the Kushtepa Canal in Afghanistan). The intricate linkages between water, energy, and agriculture further complicate decision-making processes among riparian nations. While recent diplomatic efforts signal a shift towards enhanced regional cooperation, existing agreements remain fragmented, and a sustainable, long-term governance framework is still lacking. Our findings highlight the importance of an integrated, basin-wide approach to transboundary water management. We argue that a cohesive regional water strategy—grounded in international legal frameworks and supported by collaborative governance mechanisms—can mitigate conflicts and promote water security in Central Asia. The significance of this study lies in its potential to inform policy decisions and promote sustainable practices in transboundary water governance, ultimately contributing to the broader goals of sustainable development and regional cooperation.
