Functional ingredients such as dietary fibers, probiotics and prebiotics, polyphenols, omega-3 fatty acids, and bioactive peptides are increasingly central to food systems that aim to deliver health benefits beyond basic nutrition. This review explores how molecular structure, physicochemical properties, metabolism, and microbiome interactions affect bioactivity and bioavailability. We highlight advances in green extraction, encapsulation technologies, and 3D/4D printing that enhance the stability and targeted delivery of bioactives. AI-enabled tools for ingredient discovery, structure–activity modeling, and personalized formulation are also discussed. Sensory research and market insights inform strategies to improve consumer acceptance, while clinical studies provide evidence for cardiometabolic, immune, and cognitive benefits. Safety and regulatory aspects are addressed, particularly for emerging proteins and delivery systems. By integrating scientific and technological developments across disciplines, this review provides a comprehensive foundation for future research and commercialization of safe, effective, and personalized functional food products. Consumers are increasingly willing to choose more sustainable products, driven by affordability and sustainability considerations. However, they often face difficulties in understanding the multitude of product certifications and identifying “greenwashing” marketing claims. This highlights the need for a clear and harmonized sustainability scoring system that allows consumers to benchmark products. Sustainability encompasses three key pillars: environmental, social, and economic. Accurately scoring a product’s sustainability requires addressing a wide range of criteria within these pillars, introducing significant complexity. This study proposes a multicriteria methodology for scoring the sustainability of apparel products into an A to E label. The approach combines a life cycle assessment covering environmental impacts from “farm-to-gate”, with a social evaluation based on country-level social key performance indicators (KPIs) and factory-specific data aligned with the International Labour Organization (ILO). Additionally, the sustainability score incorporates the impact of product durability, as longer-lasting products can reduce environmental footprint and costs for consumers. The methodology is defined and validated through a case study of a white T-shirt produced with 50% recycled cotton and 50% organic cotton. The results demonstrate the comprehensive assessment of the T-shirt’s environmental and social impacts, providing a detailed sustainability score, highlighting the role of recyclability. This comprehensive sustainability scoring system aims to provide consumers with a clear, harmonized, and reliable assessment of product sustainability, empowering everyone to make informed purchasing decisions aligned with their values. It will also enable brands and retailers to calculate the sustainability score of their products, including in the scope of digital product passport, provided they can ensure traceability and transparency along the supply chain. Electrical grids are undergoing a transformation driven by the increasing integration of renewable energy sources on the consumer side. This shift, alongside the electrification of consumption—particularly in areas such as electric mobility—has the potential to significantly reduce CO2 emissions. However, it is also contributing to a rise in electricity prices due to growing demand and infrastructure costs. Paradoxically, these higher prices serve as a catalyst for further investment in renewable energy technologies by reducing the payback periods of such systems. Recent European legislation has accelerated this transformation by mandating the liberalization of energy markets. This regulatory shift enables the emergence of prosumers—consumers who are also producers of energy—by granting them the right to generate, store, and trade electricity using the existing distribution grid. In this new landscape, photovoltaic systems represent a viable and increasingly attractive investment option for both households and businesses. This study presents an economic evaluation of photovoltaic system investments across different European countries, focusing on key indicators such as payback periods and the impact of local solar irradiation on the resulting electricity price. The analysis provides insight into the varying economic feasibility of distributed solar energy deployment, offering a comparative perspective that supports both policymakers and potential investors in making informed decisions about renewable energy adoption. Against the backdrop of escalating atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations, carbon emission trading systems (ETS) have emerged as pivotal policy instruments, with China’s ETS playing a prominent role globally. The carbon price, central to ETS functionality, guides resource allocation and corporate strategies. Due to unexpected events, political conflicts, limited access to data information, and insufficient cognitive levels of market participants, there are epistemic uncertainties in the fluctuations of carbon and energy prices. Existing studies often lack effective handling of these epistemic uncertainties in energy prices and carbon prices. Therefore, the core objective of this study is to reveal the dynamic linkage patterns between energy prices and carbon prices, and to quantify the impact mechanism of epistemic uncertainties on their relationship with the help of uncertain differential equations. Methodologically, a dynamic model of carbon and energy prices was constructed, and analytical solutions were derived and their mathematical properties were analyzed to characterize the linkage between carbon and energy prices. Furthermore, based on the observation data of coal prices in Qinhuangdao Port and national carbon prices, the unknown parameters of the proposed model were estimated, and uncertain hypothesis tests were conducted to verify the rationality of the proposed model. Results showed that the mean squared error of the established model for fitting the linkage relationship between carbon and energy prices was 0.76, with the fitting error controlled within 3.72%. Moreover, the prediction error was 1.88%. Meanwhile, the 5% value at risk (VaR) of the logarithmic return rate of carbon prices was predicted to be 0.0369. The research indicates that this methodology provides a feasible framework for capturing the uncertain interactions in the carbon-energy market. The price linkage mechanism revealed by it helps market participants optimize their risk management strategies and provides more accurate decision-making references for policymakers. Full article

To address the issues of capacity resource waste and increased carbon emissions caused by the asymmetry between import and export container transportation tasks in port collection and dispatching, a green and cooperative task-and-route optimization method for container trucks with heterogeneous carriers based on task sharing is proposed from the perspective of system optimization. Based on the concept of a sharing economy, a sharing and cooperation mechanism with dual elasticity in capacity and information is designed, which integrates the container trucks’ resources and dissymmetric transportation tasks of heterogeneous carriers to expand the revenue potential for all participants. Based on task sharing and matching, a green and cooperative task-and-route optimization model for container trucks with heterogeneous carriers based on task sharing is formulated in order to optimize container trucks’ resources and transportation tasks comprehensively and reduce the system’s carbon emissions. A column generation algorithm embedded with a ring-increasing strategy is designed to solve the problem to improve computational efficiency. Through algorithm testing and a case analysis, the effectiveness of the model and algorithm is validated. The optimization results show that the overall carbon emissions are reduced by more than 28%, the number of used trucks decreases by 28%, and the profits of participants are increased by 24–65% compared with independent operations. Finally, several management insights are obtained regarding the number of shared trucks, the external market demand, task demand variability, the mixed fleet composition, subsidies, and bonus adjustments. E-commerce platforms offering regional fresh produce often face a trade-off between logistics costs and product quality. Due to limited use of cold chain logistics, consumers frequently receive damaged goods, resulting in negative post-purchase experiences. This study examines how logistics service encounters, as reflected in consumer reviews, influence subsequent purchase behaviour, and how the alignment between review images and text moderates this relationship. We analyse sales and review data from 694 fruit products on Tmall between February and April 2024. Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) is applied to extract logistics-related review content. At the same time, image–text similarity is assessed using the Chinese-CLIP model. Regression analysis reveals that positive logistics service encounters significantly enhance purchase intention. However, high image–text similarity weakens this positive effect, suggesting that overly repetitive content may reduce informational value for prospective buyers. These findings advance understanding of consumer behaviour in online fresh produce markets by highlighting the interactive effects of logistics experiences and user-generated content. The results offer practical implications for improving logistics services, enhancing content diversity in review systems, and increasing consumer trust in e-commerce environments. Full article

Smallholder irrigation farmers play a vital role in sustaining rural communities in South Africa. However, the performance of smallholder irrigators, both as income generators and job creators, has come under scrutiny in recent years. In Limpopo province, a study was conducted in the Vhembe District using cross-sectional data from 95 independent and 165 public smallholder irrigators, which are privately established farmers and users of government-supported and managed irrigation systems, respectively. Qualitative data were collected through questionnaires, key informant interviews, and group discussions. Quantitative data were analyzed by SPSS version 30 using themes and codes, employing inferential statistical methods such as chi-square and t-tests to assess variables related to agrifood systems, crop selection, and market access. The study found that smallholders predominantly favor the production of grains, vegetables, and horticultural crops, with a statistically significant (p < 0.05) similarity between independent and public irrigators. Public irrigators dominate within irrigation schemes at 64% of the total, with X2 of 22.7 with 0.001 p-value. Amongst the groups, the income distribution shows a statistically significant difference in earnings between independent and public irrigators (χ2 = 25.83, p < 0.001). Informal and formal markets are accessible and available to 59% of independent irrigators, but 30% of public irrigators only access the informal market (p < 0.001). The major identified challenge across all smallholders is the lack of food value addition and commercial packaging. The study recommends the development of food value addition initiatives, adoption of climate-smart practices, maintenance of infrastructure, and improvement of market access to enhance productivity and sustainability. With the increasing integration of renewable energy, virtual power plants (VPPs) have emerged as key market participants by aggregating distributed energy resources. However, their involvement in electricity markets is increasingly challenged by two major uncertainties: price volatility and the intermittency of renewable generation. This study presents the first application of Information Gap Decision Theory (IGDT) within a two-stage cooperative scheduling framework for VPPs. A novel bidding strategy model is proposed, incorporating both robust and opportunistic optimization methods to explicitly account for decision-making behaviors under different risk preferences. In the day-ahead stage, a risk-responsive bidding mechanism is designed to address price uncertainty. In the real-time stage, the coordinated dispatch of micro gas turbines, energy storage systems, and flexible loads is employed to minimize adjustment costs arising from wind and solar forecast deviations. A case study using spot market data from Shandong Province, China, shows that the proposed model not only achieves an effective balance between risk and return but also significantly improves renewable energy integration and system flexibility. This work introduces a new modeling paradigm and a practical optimization tool for precision trading under uncertainty, offering both theoretical and methodological contributions to the coordinated operation of flexible resources and the design of electricity market mechanisms. With the rapid development of online social networks, issues related to information security and public opinion control have increasingly attracted widespread attention. Therefore, this study establishes a constrained optimal control framework for information diffusion in online social networks, based on the SiSaEIR (Susceptible Inactive–Susceptible Active–Exposed–Informed–Recovered) information diffusion model on social hypernetworks. This framework incorporates both cost and triggering constraints, with the goal of optimally regulating the information diffusion process through dynamic intervention strategies. The existence and uniqueness of the optimal solution are theoretically proven, and the corresponding optimal control strategy is derived. The effectiveness and generality of the model are demonstrated through experiments, and the impact of different combinations of control strategies on system performance enhancement is investigated. The results indicate that the proposed control framework can significantly improve system control effectiveness while satisfying all imposed constraints and exhibits strong generalizability. Not only does this study enrich the theoretical foundation of information diffusion control, but it also provides practical theoretical support for addressing real-world issues such as public opinion guidance and commercial marketing in online social networks. With the upgrading of consumption driving the transformation of the home furnishing industry towards personalized customization, panel furniture enterprises are confronted with a core contradiction between large-scale production and individualized demands: The traditional production management model is unable to cope with the chaos in production scheduling, resource waste, and low collaborative efficiency caused by small-batch and multi-variety orders. This paper proposes an intelligent production scheduling system that integrates Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Manufacturing Execution System (MES), Advanced Planning and Scheduling (APS), and Warehouse Management System (WMS), and elaborates on its data processing methods and specific application processes in each production stage. Compared with the traditional model, it effectively overcomes limitations such as coarse-grained planning, delayed execution, and information islands in middle-level systems, achieving deep collaboration between planning, workshop execution, and warehouse logistics. Empirical studies show that this system not only can effectively reduce the production costs of customized panel furniture manufacturers, enhance their market competitiveness, but also provides a digital transformation framework for the entire customized panel furniture manufacturing industry, with significant theoretical and practical value. Livestock plays a crucial role in the global food system, not only as an important source of nutrients but also as a means of economic and social well-being. It constitutes a critical parameter of agricultural production in Mediterranean countries, with the majority of farms still having a relatively small herd size and depending largely on family labor. The purpose of this study is to record and evaluate the perceptions of livestock farmers in the Region of Western Macedonia, Greece (which represents a typical paradigm of an agricultural region), regarding the future prospects and the actions taken to ensure the sustainability of their farms. The research is based on a survey carried out from May to October, 2024, on ruminant farmers. Selective breeding and crossbreeding with higher-productivity breeds are some of the genetic improvements that are generally applied to increase productivity and were, therefore, investigated in this study. Through gradual crossbreeding, farmers attempt to improve the composition of their initial herds by incorporating high-productivity traits—although without officially participating in any recognized improvement program. This increases the risk of extinction for indigenous breeds, which are abandoned for use by the farmers. Our results also showed that most livestock farms derive from inheritances, with many livestock farmers practicing grazing mainly in mountainous areas and still rearing indigenous breeds. From the farmers’ point of view, more information and education regarding market conditions are needed. Furthermore, the sustainability of farms largely depends on subsidies, which are crucial due to difficulties in economic viability, particularly in mountainous areas. Encouraging the support of market differentiation and public awareness for the nutritional value of products derived from local breeds may serve as a promising agrobiodiversity conservation strategy. Building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) is expected to play a relevant role in decarbonising our cities, both in new buildings and retrofit projects, making them more sustainable, resilient and pleasant. However, BIPV remains a niche market. To understand the reasons and help boost its development, this paper provides insights into BIPV through a holistic and systematic analysis that considers BIPV’s dual nature as both photovoltaic and building product. The methodology is based on the analyses of several BIPV technological innovation systems (TISs) developed in six countries, as well as extensive comparative assessments and investigations to identify key global features of BIPV. Social aspects, market status and forecast, perspectives from the photovoltaic and building sectors, and related regulations and standardisation are key aspects analysed to develop recommendations for policymakers. Outcome examples are low to moderate acceptance of BIPV among building owners, who give cost reasons for choosing building-added photovoltaics (BAPV) over BIPV, as well as a need for information, official guidance, skilled personnel, improved cross-sector collaboration, availability of BIPV products, proper digital tools and specific regulation to improve BIPV’s legitimacy in the construction sector. In the era of digital–real integration, open-source collaboration has become a strategic pathway for accelerating the innovation catch-up of China’s industrial software. This study employs an exploratory multi-case design, focusing on the China Automotive Operating System open-source project and the FastCAE open-source domestic CAE software integrated development platform to examine how open-source strategies shape collaborative mechanisms and innovation outcomes. The analysis reveals that firms adopt both formal (behavioral and outcome coordination) and informal (relationship and empowerment coordination) strategies, fostering high-level complementary collaboration in data, technology, institution, and human resources. These mechanisms significantly enhance R&D efficiency and quality, drive technological innovation, and create new market innovation, thereby improving collaborative performance. Prevalence and Risk Factors for Salmonella spp. on Pig Carcass, Before and After Chilling, in Brazil

The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply conducted a microbiological baseline study to determine the national prevalence of Salmonella in pig carcasses, and characterize the contamination risk according to the abattoir size under federal inspection in 2014–2015. All establishments were size-classified according to their slaughtering capacity per day. Sample weights were defined to increase the external validity of data. Samples were collected after the random selection of two half-carcasses from 76 slaughterhouses, one at the pre-chilling stage and the other at least 12 h after chilling. A total of 1544 samples were analyzed in official laboratories using Vidas SLM and SPT systems; for positive samples, we used the ISO 6579:2014. The results revealed that 10.00% (CI 7.50–13.22) of the pre-chilling carcasses tested positive for Salmonella spp. The medium-sized establishments exhibited the highest prevalence (18.51%). National and international market establishments had prevalences of 17.43%, and 9.05%, respectively. For carcass samples collected after chilling, the estimated prevalence was 4.58% (CI 3.13–6.65), with the highest prevalence recorded in the medium-sized establishments (7%), and values of 12.25% and 3.5% in the NM and IM, respectively. The information and knowledge thus acquired may support the further investigation and evaluation of surveillance programs, improving food safety. Full article

Despite global initiatives to combat Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, such activities continue unabated. As a response, states are encouraged to join the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Port State Measures Agreement (PSMA) as a countermeasure. Despite these efforts, it is suspected that many IUU fishing activities involve non-party or unknown vessels that evade international sanctions. This study aims to propose technical and institutional improvement measures in light of these challenges. First, using available IUU vessel lists, we conducted independent-sample comparisons and paired-sample comparisons to analyze the characteristics of IUU vessels. As key solutions, we propose the formation of a global collaborative body to facilitate an integrated information chain, the implementation of advanced technologies for systematic operations, strategies to encourage PSMA accession by non-parties, market investigations, and enhanced national inspection and organizational capabilities. Furthermore, this study seeks to strengthen global deterrence of IUU fishing activities by proposing a phased international cooperation framework to enhance the feasibility of integrating the PSMA, Global Record (GR), Global Information Exchange System (GIES), and Regional Fisheries Management Organization (RFMO) systems. These strategies are expected to contribute positively to the transparent governance, sustainable management of fishery resources, and safety officers and vessels. Full article
