Pumped storage power stations are effective stabilizers and regulators of the power grids. However, during the transient process, especially the operating point entering the S-shaped region, the internal flow patterns and pressure pulsations in the pump–turbine unit change violently, seriously affecting the safety of the power stations, which requires enough optimizations in the design stage of the pump–turbine. In this paper, to explore the key factors which influence the evolutions of flow patterns and pressure pulsations during the runaway process, three pump–turbine runners with different inlet blade lean, including positive angle, no angle and negative angle, were selected to simulate by using the three-dimensional method. The results show that the changes in the inlet blade lean angles have significant effects on the variation periods and maximum values of the macro parameters during the runaway process, and especially the runner with no lean angle results in the smallest oscillation periods and pressure pulsations but enlarges the runner radial forces. In addition, backflows generate from the hub side under the cases with positive or no blade lean angle, while those occur from the shroud side due to the negative angle. The results provide a basic reference for the design of the pump–turbine. Full article

High-speed propulsion systems require supersonic inlets for operation; however, these inlets lose efficiency when the flight speed range is wide. Fixed-geometry inlets designed for particular conditions encounter operational difficulties when running at supercritical speeds, including shockwave instabilities and pressure reduction, limiting their operational speed and altitude range. Increasing inlet flexibility is a critical requirement for aerospace systems that need multivariable propulsion capabilities for civilian and military operations. This study, based on a supersonic inlet whose design flight Mach number is 2.2, determines its operational performance when operating at a speed of Mach 3 and then investigates modifications for expanding its operational boundaries with variable geometry components. This study used computational fluid dynamics in ANSYS Fluent with the k-ω SST turbulence model for airflow analysis. The methodology starts with Mach 2.2 baseline validation before proceeding to the Mach 3 investigation at different upward cowl-lip deflection angles ranging from 5° to 16°. This study conducted tests with a bleed slot and a 6 mm semi-conical bump to practically diminish unstart occurrences and treatment of shock–boundary-layer interactions. The results showed that a lip deflection angle of 15° upward delivers maximum operational efficiency on Mach 3 in terms of compression efficiency, flow deceleration, and flow uniformity at the inlet exit, as it generates an exit Mach number of 1.9, identical to that of the unmodified baseline operating at Mach 2.2, while a 5° deflection upward has shown the best values for total pressure recovery. Bleed slot implementation with the bump shape decreased unstart effects at a backpressure 30 times bigger than ambient pressure and produced stable flow despite a total pressure recovery drop of 8.5%. At Mach 3, with 15 km altitude, these modifications allow the system to operate with similar effectiveness as the baseline design at lower speeds. This study introduces a method for modifying a fixed-geometry inlet and extending its limitations, offering a pathway for adaptable supersonic inlets. The findings contribute to propulsion systems design by introducing a simple method for applying geometrical variations with less mechanical complexity compared to traditional variable geometry inlets. They change the entire throat area, supporting the design of supersonic vehicles and sustainable supersonic travel. Full article

Due to its high heat transfer property, microchannel heat sink has been widely applied in thermal management, microelectronic cooling and energy conversion. To develop a microchannel heat sink featuring low pressure drop ΔP and a high heat transfer property, a V-shaped wavy microchannel (VWM) is designed and CFD simulation is carried out. Subsequently, the influences of wave amplitude A, wave length λ and inlet velocity u on the Nusselt number Nuave, the Dean Vortexes and ΔP are studied. Furthermore, based on the performance evaluation criteria (PEC), the optimal parameters of A, λ and u are chosen. Next, the influence of microchannel number N is studied at the same pump power. Eventually, the optimal VWM heat sink is compared with the V-shaped straight microchannel (VSM) heat sink and the rectangular-shaped straight microchannel (RSM) heat sink. The results show that many Dean Vortexes periodically emerge in the V-shaped wavy microchannel, particularly at the wave peak and valley. These Dean Vortexes are capable of thinning the thermal boundary layer, which significantly strengthens heat transfer. As A and u increase while λ decreases, the area, number and severity of the Dean Vortexes increase, and thus both Nuave and ΔP also increase. In the present study, the PEC first increases and then decreases, reaching its maximum value when A = 0.3 mm, λ = 5 m and u = 1.0 m/s. At the same pump power, both the heat transfer area and the total Dean Vortex number increase with the increase in N, leading to a decrease in the thermal resistance R and the maximum temperature Tmax. Compared to the VSM and RSM heat sinks, the optimal VWM heat sink decreases Tmax by 29.93 K and 38.03 K, decreases R by 50.46% and 56.68%, increases have by 156.42% and 155.43% and increases PEC by 137% and 130.78%, respectively. Clarifying the changes in the flow field, trajectory, and range of particulate matter such as input detritus and feces of marine aquaculture in offshore wind farms is of great importance for optimizing the layout of cage culture, preventing water pollution, and promoting the integrated development of wind power and aquaculture. This study designed multiple scenarios based on the basic data of the Nanpeng Island wind farm. The flow field changes were simulated through a k-epsilon model based on the porous medium model, and the particle diffusion range and trajectory were simulated via the discrete phase model (DPM) and the MIKE 21 model. The results showed that flow velocities in the whole area, except in the region near the wind turbine, were unaffected by the monopile or jacket foundation. The center velocities of the cages decreased by 14.58% and 21.45%, respectively, when culture density increased from 12.5 to 20 kg/m3. In the case of one-way inflow, placing rafts upstream of the aquaculture area can effectively slow down the flow velocity, which is reduced by 45.2% and 32.3% at the inlet and center of the cage, respectively. In the case of the occurrence of unidirectional water flow, downstream raft frames, arranged in a triangular pattern, could align with the cage center axis. Under actual sea conditions, the raft frame could be arranged in an elliptical shape around the cage. The ratio of the length of its major axis to that of its minor axis is approximately 3:1. The integration of three-dimensional inward-turning inlets with airframes has broad application prospects. This paper develops an integrated design method for the inlet forebody with a controllable incident shock wave shape, aiming at the three-dimensional inward-turning inlet with a circular entrance, and it is applied to the forebody design of a given inward-turning inlet to obtain a three-dimensional inward-turning inlet/forebody matching scheme. Numerical simulation and wind tunnel experiment were carried out to investigate the aerodynamic performance of the inlet. The results show that the inlet/forebody matching scheme successfully realizes both geometric and aerodynamic matching between the inlet and forebody, resulting in a shock-on-lip condition at the design point, with only a 2% reduction in mass flow rate. This indicates that the forebody design and matching method are highly effective. It should be noted that after the forebody matching is achieved, the overall compression effect of the inlet on the airflow is weakened, and both the Mach number and total pressure at the inlet outlet increase slightly. This report examined a design solution for a wastewater treatment facility in which—based on input data such as the amount of suspension at the inlet—the solid content in the suspension and sludge, the relative weight of the particles, the sedimentation rate, the diameter and height of the radial settler were determined. After determining the parameters, the design solution was created in the SolidWorks 2024 environment. In the design process, the shape of the fastening device was modified, which is of significant importance in the design of the facility, as it affects in a specific way the concentration of suspended substances in the thickened sludge and in the recirculated sludge flow. The design was transferred into the ANSYS CFX 2017 software for subsequent simulation of its purification function. Based on techniques in fluid mechanics, the boundary and end conditions for the analysis of the fluid flow were set. The study focused on the analysis of a CFD model to describe the movement of a two-phase fluid consisting of rainwater and sand with a particle size of 1–10 mm. Based on the analysis, the results of the influence of rotating elements on the movement of the solid phase and water in the fluid domain were reported. Full article

In gas drilling operations, the blooey line is highly susceptible to erosion-induced leakage. This study focuses on the use of field-welded V-shaped elbows in blooey lines, establishing a numerical method for erosion prediction and validating its accuracy through experimental data. The numerical results reveal that, due to the inclined configuration of the V-shaped elbow, particles from the central inlet flow directly impact the outer wall of the outlet pipe opposite the inlet, and then rebound and strike the inner wall. Meanwhile, solid particles near the pipeline wall on both sides of the inclined plane collide with the outer wall and exit in a helical flow pattern along the outlet pipe. The maximum erosion rate (3.6 × 10−4 kg/(m2·s)) occurs at the intersection of these spiral particle flows. Based on erosion predictions under various operating conditions, an empirical formula was established to correlate the erosion rate with the gas injection rate at a rate of penetration (ROP) of 1 m/h, along with corresponding conversion relationships for different ROPs. The predicted residual thickness of the V-shaped elbow showed a 6.8% relative error compared to field measurements. The proposed method can be programmed to enable real-time monitoring of the residual wall thickness and the remaining service life of the blooey line before leakage occurs, assisting field operators in determining optimal pipeline replacement schedules to ensure operational safety. To address the inefficiencies of traditional numerical simulations and the high cost of experimental validation in the aerodynamic–stealth integrated design of S-shaped inlets for aero-engines, this study proposes a novel parameter prediction model based on a fuzzy C-means (FCM) clustering and nonlinear dynamic adaptive particle swarm optimization-enhanced radial basis function neural network (NDAPSO-RBFNN). The FCM algorithm is applied to reduce the feature dimensionality of aerodynamic parameters and determine the optimal hidden layer structure of the RBF network using clustering validity indices. Meanwhile, the NDAPSO algorithm introduces a three-stage adaptive inertia weight mechanism to balance global exploration and local exploitation effectively. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed model significantly improves training efficiency and generalization capability. Specifically, the model achieves a root mean square error (RMSE) of 3.81×108 on the training set and 8.26×108 on the test set, demonstrating robust predictive accuracy. Furthermore, 98.3% of the predicted values fall within the y=x±3β confidence interval (β=1.2×107). Compared with traditional PSO-RBF models, the number of iterations of NDAPSO-RBF network is lower, the single prediction time of NDAPSO-RBF network is shorter, and the number of calls to the standard deviation of the NDAPSO-RBF network is lower. These results indicate that the proposed model not only provides a reliable and efficient surrogate modeling method for complex inlet flow fields but also offers a promising approach for real-time multi-objective aerodynamic–stealth optimization in aerospace applications. To ensure the mechanical performance of gas turbine hollow blades under high-temperature conditions, the application of aluminide high-temperature protective coatings on the inner gas flow channel surfaces of hollow blades via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) has become a critical measure for enhancing blade safety. This study employs computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to investigate the flow field within CVD reactors and the influences of deposition processes on the chemical reaction rates at sample surfaces, thereby guiding the optimization of CVD reactor design and deposition parameters. Three distinct CVD reactor configurations are examined to analyze the flow characteristics of precursor gases and the internal flow field distributions. The results demonstrate that Model A, featuring a bottom-positioned outlet and an extended inlet, exhibits a larger stable deposition zone with more uniform flow velocities near the sample surface, thereby indicating the formation of higher-quality aluminide coatings. Based on Model A, CFD simulations are conducted to evaluate the effects of process parameters, including inflow velocity, pressure, and temperature, on aluminide coating deposition. The results show that the surface chemical reaction rate increases with inflow velocity (0.0065–6.5 m/s), but the relative change rate (ratio of reaction rate to flow rate) shows a declining trend. Temperature variations (653–1453 K) induce a trapezoidal-shaped trend in deposition rates: an initial increase (653–1053 K), followed by stabilization (1053–1303 K), and a subsequent decline (>1303 K). The underlying mechanisms for this trend are discussed. Pressure variations (0.5–2 atm) reveal that both excessively low and high pressures reduce surface reaction rates, with optimal performance observed near 1 atm. This study provides a methodology and insights for optimizing CVD reactor designs and process parameters to enhance aluminide coating quality on turbine blades. Full article

Lost circulation, a prevalent challenge in drilling engineering, poses significant risks including drilling fluid loss, wellbore instability, and environmental contamination. Conventional plugging materials often exhibit an inadequate performance under high-temperature, high-pressure (HTHP), and complex formation conditions. To address that, this study developed a high-performance gel–resin composite plugging material resistant to HTHP environments. By optimizing the formulation of bisphenol-A epoxy resin (20%), hexamethylenetetramine (3%), and hydroxyethyl cellulose (1%), and incorporating fillers such as nano-silica and walnut shell particles, a controllable high-strength plugging system was constructed. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) confirmed the structural stability of the resin, with an initial decomposition temperature of 220 °C and a compressive strength retention of 14.4 MPa after 45 days of aging at 140 °C. Rheological tests revealed shear-thinning behavior (initial viscosity: 300–350 mPa·s), with viscosity increasing marginally to 51 mPa·s after 10 h of stirring at ambient temperature, demonstrating superior pumpability. Experimental results indicated excellent adaptability of the system to drilling fluid contamination (compressive strength: 5.04 MPa at 20% dosage), high salinity (formation water salinity: 166.5 g/L), and elevated temperatures (140 °C). In pressure-bearing plugging tests, the resin achieved a breakthrough pressure of 15.19 MPa in wedge-shaped fractures (inlet: 7 mm/outlet: 5 mm) and a sand-packed tube sealing pressure of 11.25 MPa. Acid solubility tests further demonstrated outstanding degradability, with a 97.69% degradation rate after 24 h in 15% hydrochloric acid at 140 °C. This study provides an efficient, stable, and environmentally friendly solution for mitigating drilling fluid loss in complex formations, exhibiting significant potential for engineering applications. The gyroid minimal surface is one type of triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS). TPMS is a minimal surface replicated in the three main directions of the Cartesian coordinate system. The minimal surface is a surface stretched between two objects, known as the smallest possible area (e.g., a soap bubble with a saddle shape stretched between two parallel circles). The complicated shape of the TPMS makes its production possible only by additive methods (3D printing). This article presents the results of experimental studies on heat transfer and flow resistance in a heat exchanger made of stainless steel. The heat exchange surface, a TPMS gyroid, separates two working media: hot and cold water. The water flow rate was varied in the range from 8 kg/h to 25 kg/h (Re = 246–1171). The water temperature at the inlet to the exchanger was maintained at a constant level of 8.8 ± 0.3 °C and 49.5 ± 0.5 °C for cold and hot water, respectively. The effect of water flow rate on the change in its temperature, the heat output of the exchanger, the average heat transfer coefficient, pressure drop, and overall resistance factor was presented. In response to the need for separation and utilization of residual film mixtures after transformation of protaetia brevitarsis larvae, a pneumatic drum-sieve-type separator for transforming mixtures of protaetia brevitarsis larvae was designed. First, the suspension velocity of each component was determined by the suspension speed test. Secondly, the separation process of residual film, larvae, and insect sand was formulated on the basis of biological activities, shape differences, and aerodynamic response characteristics. Eventually, the main structural parameters and working parameters of the machine were determined. In order to optimize the separation effect, a single-factor experiment and a quadratic regression response surface experiment containing three factors and three levels were carried out, and the corresponding regression model was established. The experimental results showed that the effects of the air speed at the inlet, inclination angle of the sieve cylinder, and rotational speed of the sieve cylinder on the impurity rate of the residual film decreased in that order, and that the effects of the rotational speed of the sieve cylinder, inclination angle of the sieve cylinder, and air speed at the inlet on the inactivation rate of the larvae decreased in that order. Through parameter optimization, a better combination of working parameters was obtained: the rotational speed of the sieve cylinder was 24 r/min, the inclination angle of the sieve cylinder was −0.43°, and the air speed at the inlet was 5.32 m/s. The average values of residual film impurity rate and larval inactivation rate obtained from the material sieving test under these parameters were 8.74% and 3.18%, with the relative errors of the theoretically optimized values being less than 5%. The results of the study can provide a reference for the resource utilization of residual film and impurity mixtures and the development of equipment for the living body separation of protaetia brevitarsis. In order to study the problem of obvious wall thinning in the wellbore caused by proppant backflow and sand production under throttling conditions in tight gas wells. Based on the gas-phase control equation, particle motion equation, and erosion model, the wellbore erosion model is established. The distribution law of pressure, temperature, and velocity trace fields under throttling conditions is analyzed, and the influences of different throttling pressures, particle diameters, and particle mass flows on wellbore erosion are analyzed. The flow field at the nozzle changes drastically, and there is an obvious pressure drop, temperature drop, and velocity rise. When the surrounding gas is completely mixed, the physical quantity gradually stabilizes. The erosion shape of the wellbore outlet wall has a point-like distribution. The closer to the throttle valve outlet, the more intense the erosion point distribution is. Increasing the inlet pressure and particle mass flow rate will increase the maximum erosion rate, and increasing the particle diameter will reduce the maximum erosion rate. The particle mass flow rate has the greatest impact on the maximum erosion rate, followed by the particle diameter. The erosion trend was predicted using multiple regression model fitting of the linear interaction term. The research results can provide a reference for the application of downhole throttling technology and wellbore integrity in tight gas exploitation. Full article

Aircraft, as electromagnetically complex targets, have radar cross-sections (RCSs) that are influenced by various factors, with the inlet duct being a critical component that often serves as a primary source of electromagnetic scattering, significantly impacting the scattering characteristics. In light of the conflict between aerodynamic performance and electromagnetic characteristics in the design of aircraft engine inlet grilles, this paper proposes a metasurface radar-absorbing inlet grille (RIG) solution based on a NACA symmetric airfoil. The RIG adopts a sandwich structure consisting of a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) dielectric substrate, a copper zigzag metal strip array, and an indium tin oxide (ITO) resistive film. By leveraging the principles of surface plasmon polaritons, electromagnetic wave absorption can be achieved. To enhance the design efficiency, a multi-objective Bayesian optimization framework driven by the expected hypervolume improvement (EHVI) is constructed. The results show that, compared with a conventional rectangular cross-section grille, an airfoil-shaped grille under the same constraints will reduce both aerodynamic losses and the absorption bandwidth. After 100-step EHVI–Bayesian optimization, the optimized balanced model attains a 57.79% reduction in aerodynamic loss relative to the rectangular-shaped grille, while its absorption bandwidth increases by 111.99%. The RCS exhibits a reduction of over 8.77 dBsm in the high-frequency band. These results confirm that the proposed optimization design process can effectively balance the conflict between aerodynamic performance and stealth performance for RIGs, reducing the signal strength of aircraft engine inlets. The possibility of collecting new archaeological elements useful in reconstructing the dynamics of population, production and commercial activities in the Bronze Age at the edge of the central-southern Venice Lagoon was provided between 2023 and 2024 thanks to an intervention of rescue archaeology planned during some water restoration works in the Giare–Mira area. Three small excavations revealed, approximately one meter below the current surface and covered by alluvial sediments, a rather complex palimpsest dated to the late Recent and the early Final Bronze Age. Three large circular pits containing exclusively purified grey/blue clay and very rare inclusions of vegetable fibres, and many large, fired clay vessels’ bases, walls and rims clustered in concentrated assemblages and random deposits point to potential on-site production. Two pyro-technological structures, one characterised by a sub-circular combustion chamber and a long inlet channel/praefurnium, and the second one with a sub-rectangular shape with arched niches along its southern side, complete the exceptional context here discovered. To analyse the relationship between the site and the natural sedimentary succession and to evaluate the possible extension of this site, three electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and low-frequency electromagnetic (FDEM) measurements were collected. Several manual core drillings associated with remote sensing integrated the geophysical data in the analysis of the geomorphological evolution of this area, clearly related to different phases of fluvial activity, in a framework of continuous relative sea level rise. The typology and chronology of the archaeological structures and materials, currently undergoing further analyses, support the interpretation of the site as a late Recent/early Final Bronze Age productive site. Geophysical and geomorphological data provide information on the palaeoenvironmental setting, suggesting that the site was located on a fine-grained, stable alluvial plain at a distance of a few kilometres from the lagoon shore to the south-east and the course of the Brenta River to the north. The archaeological site was buried by fine-grained floodplain deposits attributed to the Brenta River. The good preservation of the archaeological structures buried by fluvial sediments suggests that the site was abandoned soon before sedimentation started. Full article
