Sedentary Activities and Food Intake among Children and Adolescents in the Zhejiang Province of China: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background: Sedentary behavior may affect the types of food consumed in children and adolescents’ daily diets. Previous published studies are limited to local surveys. This study aimed to explore the relationship between sedentary behavior and food intake among children and adolescents. Methods: A stratified sampling technique was employed in the present cross-sectional study. Demographic characteristics, sedentary behavior, transportation modes, and food intake were investigated. Results: We found that children and adolescents who watched movies or TV programs online or on their smartphones on weekends and who chatted online on weekends, including on QQ (an instant messaging software service) and WeChat (an instant messaging software service), increased their intake of instant noodles and fried pasta (Spearman’s rho = 0.468, 0.575, 0.465, and 0.323; p < 0.05). Children and adolescents who chatted online on weekends, including on QQ and WeChat, increased their intake of tofu skin (Spearman’s rho = 0.461; p < 0.05), and those who browsed online on weekdays increased their intake of whole-fat liquid milk (Spearman’s rho = 0.455; p < 0.05). Children and adolescents who browsed and chatted online on weekends, including on QQ and WeChat, and who played computer or smartphone games, increased their intake of fried potato chips (French fries or other fried snacks) (Spearman’s rho = 0.568, 0.270, and 0.412; p < 0.05). With respect to modes of transportation used to travel to and from school, children and adolescents who took buses and subways increased their intake of rice, instant noodles, sweet potatoes, soybean milk, tofu skin, processed meat products (sausage, ham sausage, or lunch meat), fish, shrimp, vegetables, nuts, and sweet cookies (buns, cakes, Dim sum, and moon cakes) (Spearman’s rho = 0.394, 0.536, 0.630, 0.408, 0.485, 0.441,0.410, 0.424, 0.444, 0.541, and 0.366; p < 0.05). Conclusions: Sedentary behavior affects the types of food consumed in children and adolescents’ daily diets. Children and adolescents who browsed online on weekdays increased their intake of whole-fat liquid milk, but also increased their intake of foods with high fat, high salt, and low nutrient density. Children and adolescents taking buses and subways increased their intake of low-nutrition quality products. Public awareness efforts should focus on reducing the consumption of low-nutrition quality products and nutritional education. Full article

This research migrates a monolithic smart intercom system to a microservice architecture, making the system more secure, stable, and scalable. The security mechanisms of the instant messaging platform are combined with microservices to improve the security of the system. The stability and performance of microservices are shown to be better than those of monolithic services through experimental tests. Residents can use different instant messaging software instead of the handset to improve the convenience of using this system. This system also implements community broadcasts, platform broadcasts, unit broadcasts, and family broadcasts to exchange messages across different instant messaging platforms. This paper proposes OpenAPI for other smart intercoms to integrate this system’s services and resources. In addition, this study deploys two microservice architectures using a native load balancer with a kube proxy and a service mesh load balancer with an istio proxy. Experiments were conducted during which residents tested the kube proxy and the istio proxy using stress testing tools on two microservice architectures, and the results showed that the kube proxy was slightly better than the istio proxy. In this paper, an embedded system is used as a host for the intercom and as a chatbot server for this system. The chatbot server controls door locks, cameras, buzzers, and related devices through web services on the WoT (Web of Things) to provide residents and visitors with better functionality and integrational services. This system can greatly improve the security and convenience of the system compared with the traditional intercom system. The resident uses the instant messaging software of the smartphone to replace the handset function, and there is no need to install and learn new apps, reducing the cost of the handset and the wiring indoors and outdoors. Whether or not the residents are at home, they can check whether there are visitors and check the status of their doors through their smartphones. Conversely, any visitor can also contact the resident through this intercom, while there is no way to confirm whether the resident is at home or not, which enhances the security of the house. This system provides flexibility in wireless installation and use and sufficient mobility for residents. The system architecture strikes a good balance between user convenience and home security and between performance and cost, effectively improving home security and reducing costs. Full article

Internationally, evidence exists that physicians use instant messaging services for communication tasks in everyday clinical practice However, there are only few data on physicians in Germany in this regard. Therefore, at the initiation of our project “DocTalk-Dialog meets Chatbot: Collaborative Learning and Teaching in the Process of Work”, we conducted a stakeholder survey with an exploratory research approach. The aim was to gain initial insights into use of instant messaging software and attitudes towards data security and advantages and disadvantages before implementing a data-secure in-house messaging platform. N = 70 physicians at Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin completed an exploratory questionnaire with closed and open-ended questions. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and qualitative data using thematic analysis. The use of messenger software was not widespread in the sample studied. Physicians most frequently used face-to-face contact for communication. On average, up to ten instant messages were exchanged per day, mainly among colleagues, to answer mutual questions, and to send pictures. With a high awareness of privacy-related restrictions among participating physicians, advantages such as fast and uncomplicated communication were also highlighted. An instant messenger solution that complies with the German data protection guidelines is needed and should be investigated in more detail. Full article

Background and objective: Patients with heart failure are a high-risk group who may have a higher mortality rate if infected during the COVID-19 pandemic. The problem of a patient’s non-adherence to cardiac rehabilitation programs is still a challenge, resulting in disappointing long-term benefits of cardiac rehabilitation. Telehealth, including telerehabilitation, has grown in popularity to improve access to quality healthcare. It is more valuable and safer compared to usual rehabilitation care, especially during the current COVID-19 pandemic, to cut down unnecessary hospital visits and reduce the risk of cluster infections. This study aims to identify the efficacy of relevant randomized control trials (RCTs) using telerehabilitation in managing heart failure. The model, delivery care, safety, and efficacy were assessed. Material and Methods: This study was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). The authors included relevant records published in the last ten years from three databases: PubMed/MEDLINE, ProQuest, and EBSCO. Each included study was further assessed using Cochrane’s Risk of Bias (Rob 2) tool. Results: The telerehabilitation models consisted of cellphones, instant messaging, or online videoconferencing software. Some also included tool sets to monitor patients’ vital signs regularly or during exercise. Most patients adhered to and completed all provided programs. Cardiac telerehabilitation successfully improved patients’ physical fitness, quality of life, and mental health. No major adverse outcomes or significant complications were associated with the program. Conclusion: Cardiac telerehabilitation has the potential to deliver rehabilitation for heart failure patients, evidenced by its feasibility, efficacy, and safety. As a future perspective, this delivery care type can be applied throughout transmissible disease outbreaks or even globally. Full article

Due to the recent COVID-19 pandemic, many people have faced in-home isolation, as every suspected patient must stay at home. The behavior of such isolated people needs to be monitored to ensure that they are staying at home. Using a camera is a very practical method. However, smart bracelets are more convenient when personal privacy is a concern or when the blood oxygen value or heart rate must be monitored. In this study, a low-cost indoor positioning system that uses a Bluetooth beacon, a smart bracelet, and an embedded system is proposed. In addition to monitoring whether a person living alone is active in a specific environment and tracking the heart rate or blood oxygen value under particular conditions, this system can also send early warning signals to specific observation units or relatives through instant messaging software. Social networks, instant messaging applications, smartphones and the Internet are the main technological tools used by adolescents for communication. While they can benefit from those tools, they can also be used as a weapon for harassment. Cyberbullying is the name used for a current global social problem derived from harassment that uses offensive messages, which is severely affecting the youngest. Different types of software to identify and filter offensive contents have been developed in the last years. However, most of them are time consuming, not scalable and focused on very specific environments. To address this problem, we propose a mobile application for smartphones that provides a potential offensive content detection in order to determine whether a cyberbullying attack exists or not. In particular, we have developed an application that combines data pre-processing, fuzzy logic and machine learning to predict cyberbullying content. The main idea is to install a mobile application on the smartphone of a possible victim, so that it runs in the background. The system analyzes all received messages and notifications using data processing and decision-making algorithms. Finally, a fuzzy logic technique helps the system to reach a conclusion under a certain degree of imprecision. Full article

Low-cost video surveillance systems are attractive for Smart Home applications (especially in emerging economies). Those systems use the flexibility of the Internet of Things to operate the video camera only when an intrusion is detected. We are the only ones that focus on the design of protocols based on intelligent agents to communicate the video of an intrusion in real time to the guards by wireless or mobile networks. The goal is to communicate, in real time, the video to the guards who can be moving towards the smart home. However, this communication suffers from sporadic disruptions that difficults the control and drastically reduces user satisfaction and operativity of the system. In a novel way, we have designed a generic software architecture based on design patterns that can be adapted to any hardware in a simple way. The implanted hardware is of very low economic cost; the software frameworks are free. In the experimental tests we have shown that it is possible to communicate to the moving guard, intrusion notifications (by e-mail and by instant messaging), and the first video frames in less than 20 s. In addition, we automatically recovered the frames of video lost in the disruptions in a transparent way to the user, we supported vertical handover processes and we could save energy of the smartphone's battery. However, the most important thing was that the high satisfaction of the people who have used the system. Full article

Rural socio-ecological production landscape (SEPL) presents a mosaic combination of various use and spatial patterns. The rural SEPL claims conservation because it produces bundles of ecosystem services and well-being for people. However, due to the prevalent use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in recent years, we attempt to explore how the new ICT tool was employed to conserve the rural SEPL. This study targets four rural communities that the Balian River flows across in Sanzhi district, New Taipei city. These communities self-organized a river conservation patrol team and utilized LINE (an instant messaging software) group to manage the SEPL as well. We conducted mixed method research to collect their group conversation evidences including time, amount and content for basic quantitative analysis. Further, we adopted the qualitative in-depth interviews of key-informants to examine the characteristic of activities, the collaboration among communities and the benefits and issues during their action practices. The results show the ICT tools are indeed effective in assisting in social learning when conducting a cross-region of SEPL conservation activities. Full article
