The transition from non-renewable to renewable energy sources has emerged as a pressing global issue, driven by concerns over climate change, resource depletion, and the need for sustainable development. This study compares Canada, an energy-rich nation, and Bangladesh, an energy-scarce country, to understand the structural, institutional, and market factors driving their respective renewable energy transitions. Using univariate time-series models (ARIMA, ETS, and Prophet) for energy demand forecasting and extensive literature-based policy evaluation, the paper examines trends in energy production, consumption, and trade from 1990 to 2024. Our analysis indicates that Canada’s vast reserves of both renewable and non-renewable energy sources, its diversified energy portfolio, and carbon-pricing framework support a stable decarbonization pathway, with renewables projected to account for more than 20% of total supply by 2030. However, regional disparities and political resistance from the established energy sector continue to delay transition outcomes. On the other hand, Bangladesh has limited renewable and non-renewable energy sources, with its primary energy resource being natural gas reserves. Consequently, its heavy reliance on imports (over 75% of primary energy) and institutional bottlenecks expose its energy system to commodity-price volatility, undermining energy security and slowing renewable investment. Despite these challenges, targeted solar programs and concessional financing have modestly increased the penetration of renewable energy. The analysis highlights that commodity market fluctuations, technological innovations (such as smart grids and energy storage), and market-based policy instruments critically shape each country’s transition trajectory. A coordinated policy linking market stabilization, innovation investment, and social inclusion is essential for achieving a just and secure low-carbon transition in both countries. Full article

As a critical link between regional economic development and ecological security, understanding the dynamics of water retention is essential for sustainable water resource management in the Huaihe River Economic Belt. This study explores the spatio-temporal evolution and spatial explanatory factors of water retention across five temporal snapshots (2003, 2008, 2013, 2018, and 2023). Based on the InVEST model, we assessed water retention capacity at both grid and spatial development levels, thereby obtaining the retention characteristics of different land-use types and their responses to land-use transitions. Furthermore, a parameter-optimized geographical detector was employed to quantify the relative contributions of climatic-environmental and social-economic factors to the spatial variance of the modeled water retention index. Results indicate that the total water retention capacity exhibited significant interannual fluctuations, with the net capacity in 2023 being lower than the initial level in 2003. Retention values displayed obvious spatial heterogeneity, with high levels concentrated in the southwest and north and low levels distributed in the central area, closely mirroring precipitation distribution. While forest land exhibited the strongest unit water retention capacity, cropland contributed the most to the total volume (50.49%) due to its predominant areal proportion (73.92%). Notably, the conversion of forest to cropland was spatially associated with the most substantial loss in the modeled retention capacity. Soil saturated hydraulic conductivity and land-use type were identified as the dominant factors explaining the spatial variance of water retention. These findings underscore the methodological utility of coupling the InVEST model with a parameter-optimized geographical detector. For practical ecosystem management, the results suggest that spatial planning policies should strictly limit the conversion of ecological lands to agricultural use and prioritize targeted soil hydrological improvements in the central plains to secure long-term water resources. The accelerating global energy transition has substantially increased demand for critical minerals such as copper, nickel, and lithium, positioning mining firms as key actors in the decarbonization of energy systems. However, the expansion of mineral extraction raises important sustainability challenges because mining activities remain highly energy- and carbon-intensive. This study investigates whether green innovation can simultaneously improve environmental performance and financial performance in critical mineral mining firms and examines the moderating role of institutional governance. Using a balanced panel of 35 publicly listed mining companies from Australia, Canada, Chile, Brazil, and Indonesia over the period 2015–2024, the analysis applies fixed-effects panel regressions complemented by dynamic specifications and multiple robustness tests, including alternative variable definitions and System Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) estimation. The results show that green innovation significantly reduces carbon intensity, indicating that environmental investments in renewable energy integration, electrification, and process efficiency contribute to improving emissions performance in mining operations. Green innovation also enhances firm financial performance, although the benefits emerge gradually over time, suggesting delayed financial gains followed by long-term efficiency improvements. Furthermore, governance quality strengthens the positive relationship between green innovation and firm performance, highlighting the importance of institutional environments in shaping the economic returns of sustainability strategies. By providing firm-level evidence across major mineral-producing economies, this study contributes to the literature on critical minerals, environmental finance, and the institutional dimensions of the just energy transition. Ukraine’s reconstruction, estimated at $524 billion over the next decade, presents an unprecedented opportunity to embed circular economy principles into industrial rebuilding, but the financial architecture currently deployed for reconstruction is structurally blind to circular outcomes. This paper examines how digital tools and innovative financing mechanisms can channel investment toward circular industrial reconstruction in Ukraine, drawing on Germany’s National Circular Economy Strategy (NCES, adopted December 2024) as a reference model. A comparative institutional analysis combines a documentary review of Ukrainian reconstruction policy frameworks (Ukraine Plan 2024–2027, RDNA4, Ukraine Facility) and German NCES instruments with the construction of a financing−technology pathway typology. Five pathways are proposed: circular bond issuance with Digital Product Passport integration; blended finance with blockchain impact verification; EU Facility conditionality with AI-driven resource management; war risk insurance with circular construction standards; and SME digitalisation credit with circular economy competency building. Each pathway is assessed against five criteria: investment scale, risk mitigation, circular measurement, digital readiness, and institutional feasibility, and applied to four industrial corridors (Dnipro region, Zaporizhzhia region, Kharkiv region, and Donetsk region). The analysis reveals that no single pathway is sufficient; a layered strategy differentiating by region is required. Digital tools, particularly the Digital Product Passport and blockchain traceability, serve as partial substitutes for institutional trust in post-conflict settings, reducing information asymmetry between investors and project operators. The paper contributes a practically oriented framework at the under-theorised intersection of post-conflict reconstruction finance and circular economy scholarship. Full article

Monosex culture has been shown to enhance farming productivity in several decapod crustaceans, and it has also been suggested that this approach holds high potential for the sustainable aquaculture of the Chinese mitten crab, Eriocheir sinensis. Pronounced sexual dimorphism in E. sinensis facilitates the implementation of a monosex culture. This study aimed to compare the growth, gonadal development, culture performance, and economic outcomes of two monosex culture modes, i.e., an all-female culture and an all-male culture, as well as a mixed-sex culture (males: females = 1:1) during an 8-month growth period in earthen ponds. The results showed that: (1) Throughout the grow-out period, the average body weight in both monosex culture treatments was consistently higher than in the mixed-sex treatment, with a significantly greater body weight in the all-female and all-male treatments than that of males and females in the mixed-sex treatment being detected during mid-June and October, respectively (p < 0.05). (2) The percentages of both sexes that had finished puberty molting were mostly similar between the monosex and mixed-sex treatments between July 20th to October 10th, although the all-female treatment had a significantly lower puberty molting percentage than the mixed-sex treatment on August 10th (p < 0.05). Gonadosomatic index (GSI) values were similar between the monosex and mixed-sex treatments for both males and females (p > 0.05). (3) At harvest period, the final body weight in the all-male treatment was significantly higher than that of the mixed-sex treatment (p < 0.05). In contrast, the all-female treatment exhibited a significantly higher survival rate and a lower limb injury rate compared with the mixed-sex treatment (p < 0.05). As a result, the yield of the all-male and all-female treatments exceeded that of the males and females in the mixed-sex treatment by 24% and 13%, respectively. Additionally, the mixed-sex treatment also had a significantly higher feed conversion ratio (p < 0.05). Finally, the monosex treatments had a higher proportion of large crabs (males ≥ 200 g, females ≥ 175 g) and a lower proportion of small crabs (males ≤ 150 g, females ≤ 100 g) compared to the mixed-sex treatment. (4) In terms of economic benefits, net profit and return on investment (ROI) were highest under the all-female treatment, while the mixed-sex treatment recorded the lowest total return, net profit, and ROI (p < 0.05). In conclusion, an all-female culture is recommended for the grow-out culture period of E. sinensis, as it led to a higher survival rate, produced larger-sized crabs and generated greater overall economic benefit. The harms associated with substance use continue to disproportionately affect marginalized populations. This study presents a retrospective program evaluation of a mobile health unit that delivers integrated clinical and harm reduction services to marginalized populations in Eastern Puerto Rico. Methods: A secondary data analysis was conducted using administrative data from a mobile health unit, capturing client encounters, service utilization (e.g., mental health support, health screenings, safe injection counseling, and case management), visit frequency, and demographic characteristics. This study is framed as an implementation-focused program evaluation. Descriptive and exploratory analyses were conducted to assess service delivery, program reach, utilization patterns, and selected program outcomes over a 1.5-year period. Results: Between January 2022 and October 2023, the mobile health unit served 279 participants across eight municipalities. Participants exhibited higher rates of intravenous drug use, mental health disorders, homelessness, and incarceration history compared with previously published estimates for the general Puerto Rican population, although these comparisons are indirect. The program delivered multidisciplinary services and facilitated referrals addressing key social determinants of health, including housing, nutritional assistance, identification services, in-patient treatment, and medication-assisted treatment. Model-based estimates using the Mobile Health Map Impact Tracker tool suggest that, in 2023, mobile health screenings may be associated with a return on investment of approximately 6:1, 259 avoided emergency department visits, 29 life-years saved, and approximately USD 2.4 million in healthcare cost savings. Conclusions: This evaluation demonstrates the feasibility of a mobile health model integrating harm reduction and clinical services to reach highly marginalized populations and facilitate connections to health and social services. Findings reflect program implementation, service reach, and engagement rather than causal effectiveness. Mobile health approaches may represent a feasible and potentially beneficial strategy for expanding access to care, although further research incorporating patient-level outcomes is needed to assess effectiveness. The spatiotemporal evolution of ecosystem services and the elucidation of their driving mechanisms constitute a central scientific issue in territorial spatial optimization and regional sustainable development. Taking Gansu Province, a core area of the ecological security barrier in northwestern China, as the study area, this study integrates land-use, natural geographic, and socioeconomic data from 2000 to 2020. Using a land-use transfer matrix, the InVEST model, the Geographical Detector, and the PLUS model, we constructed a comprehensive analytical framework that combines historical evolution analysis, spatial differentiation identification, and multi-scenario simulation and prediction. The framework was used to systematically reveal the spatiotemporal dynamics of four core ecosystem services, namely carbon storage (CS), water yield (WY), habitat quality (HQ), and soil retention service (SDR), and to analyze their natural and socioeconomic driving mechanisms, while also simulating land-use change and ecosystem-service responses under the natural development, ecological protection, and urban expansion scenarios in 2030. The results show that, from 2000 to 2020, land use in Gansu Province was dominated by grassland (average proportion: 33.34%) and unused land (average proportion: 41.35%). Urban land expanded from 660.52 km2 to 2227.36 km2, with its share increasing from 0.15% to 0.50%, mainly through the conversion of cropland and grassland. Ecosystem services exhibited marked spatial differentiation: CS increased from east to west; WY showed an increasing pattern from northwest to southeast; HQ was lower in the central and southeastern regions and higher in the western and southern regions; and SDR was dominated by low-value areas in the northwest (average proportion: 84.81%). Driving-mechanism analysis indicated that slope was the core natural factor affecting CS, HQ, and SDR (q = 0.18–0.45), while mean annual precipitation dominated the variation in WY (q = 0.31–0.35). The influence of socioeconomic factors such as GDP increased gradually over time, showing an evolutionary trend from natural dominance to coordinated natural–socioeconomic regulation. Multi-scenario simulation further showed that, under the ecological protection scenario, grassland area increased significantly (+0.60%), the proportions of medium-value CS zones and high-value WY zones increased, and ecosystem services were optimized overall; under the urban expansion scenario, cropland and urban land expanded (+0.87% and +0.23%, respectively), imposing potential pressure on part of the ecosystem-service functions. These findings provide a scientific basis for optimizing territorial spatial planning, strengthening the ecological security barrier, and promoting regional sustainable development in Gansu Province. The methodological framework also offers a broadly applicable reference for ecologically sensitive arid and semi-arid regions in northwestern China. Full article

Carbon emission regulations and customers’ green preferences require ports and shipping companies to develop green services, but green investments entail significant costs. Vertical alliance cooperation between ports and shipping companies through sharing costs can address this issue. Most studies use non-cooperative game to analyze the competitive relationship between ports and shipping companies. Although such research can capture price competition, they struggle to address the distribution of cooperative benefits within an alliance. They also fail to simultaneously reflect the coexistence of competition and cooperation. So, we constructed a non-cooperative–cooperative biform game to analyze green investment under vertical alliance. In the non-cooperative stage, the model captures vertical price competition between ports and shipping companies, as well as horizontal competition among supply chains. In the cooperative stage, the Shapley value is used to allocate the coalition profits from green investment cooperation. The results indicate that alliance cooperation can promote the green development of shipping. Moderate green competition can promote the green development of shipping. Route substitution competition will increase service prices and green investment level and reduce the cost-sharing ratio for shipping companies. Port congestion prompts ports to increase green investment level. These findings offer references for the green collaborative development of ports and shipping companies across different countries, thereby enriching the research framework for global sustainable development in shipping. Soil contamination in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is increasingly driven by rapid industrialization, intensive agriculture, mining activities, and urban expansion, posing significant risks to food safety, ecosystem services, and human livelihoods. Despite the growing scale of the problem, low-cost, locally adaptable remediation technologies are widely available and technically feasible within the region. Organic waste and waste-derived products—such as compost, manure, biochar, vermicompost, digestate, and agro-industrial residues—have emerged as sustainable and cost-effective amendments for the remediation of contaminated soils. These materials can immobilize heavy metals, enhance the microbial degradation of organic pollutants, and improve soil health, making them especially suitable for resource-constrained settings. This review synthesizes the current knowledge on the use of organic waste-based remediation approaches in SSA, highlighting technologies already applied at the laboratory, pilot, and field scales, as well as their effectiveness across different contaminant types. However, despite their demonstrated potential, their widespread adoption remains limited. The primary challenge is not the absence of affordable solutions, but rather the systemic constraints characteristic of many SSA countries, including limited technical capacity, weak policy and regulatory frameworks, low stakeholder awareness, and insufficient financial and institutional support for large-scale implementation. To enable broader uptake, there is a need to strengthen waste segregation and treatment systems, standardize composting and pyrolysis processes, and develop robust regulatory guidelines and certification schemes. Investments in monitoring infrastructure, practitioner training, and knowledge transfer mechanisms will also be critical to translating scientific advances into scalable, field-ready solutions for sustainable soil remediation in SSA. Chronic diseases drive healthcare costs, and employers seek scalable strategies to improve health outcomes and control expenses. Telehealth behavioral care shows promise for managing chronic conditions, but its long-term economic value in employer populations is still unclear. We assessed the cost-effectiveness and ROI of a behavioral care (LBC) model using a Markov model in a custom analytic tool. The model simulated disease progression, healthcare utilization, and QALYs over five years from the employer perspective. Transition probabilities, costs, and mortality risks were obtained from the InHealth program, national sources, and published literature. Employees in the behavioral care model were compared with a control group receiving usual care. Among 4461 employees aged 40, intervention participants had five-year costs of $41,431, versus $47,834 for controls, saving $6403 per member and $28.6 million overall. Treated members gained 4.7 QALYs compared to 4.6 in controls, equivalent to 36.5 extra days of full health. The program had a ROI of 6.53, showing significant cost savings. Telehealth behavioral care is a cost-effective way to improve health outcomes and provide financial benefits to employers. These results support incorporating behavioral care into value-based benefits and highlight potential long-term savings through prevention and management of lifestyle-related chronic diseases. Energy hydrogen is emerging as a key driver for the deep decarbonization of energy systems in the Americas, particularly in sectors that are difficult to electrify, such as heavy industry, long-distance transportation, and seasonal energy storage. This article presents a comprehensive review of current prospects and long-term planning for hydrogen in North America, Central America, and South America, analyzing its role within energy transition strategies to long term. It examines technological advancements in green hydrogen production from renewable energy sources, projected costs, required infrastructure, and potential integration schemes with existing electricity systems. Furthermore, it assesses emerging regulatory frameworks, public policies, and national and regional initiatives that seek to position hydrogen as a pillar of energy security, economic competitiveness, and emissions reduction. The study identifies differentiated opportunities based on the availability of renewable resources, industrial capacities, and socioeconomic contexts, as well as common challenges related to investment, standardization, and social acceptance. Finally, implications for long-term energy planning are discussed, highlighting the potential of hydrogen to strengthen the resilience and sustainability of the energy system in the Americas. Addressing the persistent challenges of low resource utilization efficiency and the difficulty in quantifying hidden costs within the beef cattle sector, this study proposes an integrated diagnostic methodology that couples Material Flow Cost Accounting (MFCA) with Value Stream Mapping (VSM). Using a cohort of 1623 beef cattle finished in 2024 at the case study farm in Heilongjiang Province, China, the full life-cycle accounting reveals that hidden costs constitute 6.43% of total inputs. Attribution analysis further pinpoints two critical nodes: feed loss and bedding consumption, which account for 33.14% and 35.77% of negative product costs, respectively. Based on these diagnostics, two optimization strategies were devised: refined feed supply chain management and a recycled bedding system centered on the aerobic fermentation of cattle manure. Empirical estimates indicate that upgrading hardware facilities could reduce the feed loss rate to under 2%, yielding annual savings of ¥485,200. Furthermore, the bedding recycling system not only achieves zero waste discharge but also generates an average annual displacement income of ¥3.504 million, with an investment payback period of just 0.54 years. These findings demonstrate the efficacy of the coupled MFCA-VSM model in identifying environmental costs and unlocking economic potential, thereby providing an actionable pathway for the livestock industry’s transition toward more intensive and circular practices. Equitable prioritization of public investments is increasingly critical as municipalities face constrained budgets, heterogeneous neighborhood needs, and demands for transparent decisions. This paper proposes a fairness-aware group multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) framework for ranking municipal infrastructure investments when budgets are constrained, and neighborhood needs differ. Six alternatives are assessed in the Istanbul case study: flood risk mitigation, inclusive public realm and cooling, smart and energy-efficient municipal assets, walking and cycling infrastructure, healthcare access improvements, and seismic retrofitting of public buildings. The criteria system combines efficiency, implementability, socio-environmental performance, and equity-oriented priorities through five main dimensions and 23 sub-criteria. In addition to cost, feasibility, and service effectiveness, the framework incorporates fairness-related criteria such as baseline need and deficit severity, vulnerability-targeting effectiveness, minimum service guarantee for the worst-off, and priority for low-accessibility centers. Public acceptance and environmental performance are also included. Stakeholder panels provide expert judgments using intuitionistic fuzzy sets, capturing membership, non-membership, and hesitation to reflect uncertainty. Criteria weights are derived with Intuitionistic Fuzzy Step-wise Weight Assessment Ratio Analysis (IF-SWARA), enabling importance elicitation and group aggregation without forcing crisp consensus. Alternatives are then ranked using Intuitionistic Fuzzy Combined Compromise Solution (IF-CoCoSo), which blends additive and multiplicative compromise solutions to balance overall performance with equity objectives. Robustness is assessed through sensitivity analysis by varying the γ parameter within the IF-CoCoSo procedure. A municipal case study demonstrates that healthcare access improvements achieve the highest compromise performance, followed by flood risk mitigation and seismic retrofitting of public buildings, while smart and energy-efficient municipal assets rank last. The findings confirm that explicitly embedding fairness criteria can shift municipal priorities toward alternatives that more directly reduce deprivation, risk, and spatial inequality. The main contribution of this study is not merely empirical application, but the development of a fairness-aware group MCDM framework that operationalizes distributive justice in municipal investment prioritization through a structured set of criteria. Domestic and family violence (DFV) is a key driver of women’s homelessness and financial insecurity. In Australia, Safe at Home (SAH) programs have emerged as an innovative, wrap-around service response that increases victim-survivors’ safety by implementing a range of strategies and tools that enables them to remain in their home or a home of their choice. SAH responses represent one strategy that effectively prevents homelessness and mitigates the financial, social, and emotional disruption associated with housing relocation after leaving a violent and abusive relationship. This paper examines the implementation of SAH responses in Australia through a critical synthesis of national policy documents and published literature. The paper outlines the four nationally endorsed pillars of SAH (maximising safety, integrated responses, homelessness prevention, and economic security) and examines how these pillars shape service design and outcomes. Evidence from evaluations and outcome studies indicate that SAH can enhance women’s sense of safety, support housing stability, and reduce the financial burden of leaving a violent partner. Access and effectiveness vary depending on the design of the response and location. Challenges include limited affordable housing supply, inconsistent perpetrator accountability, and structural barriers to long-term economic security. Sustained investment in SAH programs, robust data collection mechanisms, and stronger integration of housing and economic supports are ultimately needed to ensure SAH can fulfil its potential as a core component of Australia’s DFV service system. Analysis of Spatiotemporal Variations and Driving Factors of Carbon Storage Based on the PLUS-InVEST-OPGD Model: A Case Study of Tai’an City

Urban sprawl constantly reconfigures the land use pattern, and such transformations may significantly modify regional carbon stocks. Utilizing Tai’an City as the study site, this research established a comprehensive integrated Patch-generating Land Use Simulation (PLUS), Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Trade-offs (InVEST), and Optimal Parameters-based Geographical Detector (OPGD) system to reconstruct carbon storage shifts from 2000 to 2020, project its reaction to four diverse development trajectories in 2030, and investigate the drivers underlying spatial disparities. The results indicate a persistent decline in carbon storage throughout the past two decades, with peak concentrations primarily gathered in mountain regions dominated by forest and grassland, whereas lesser amounts were grouped in urban and suburban areas defined by built-up land. Compared to 2020, the projected carbon stock in 2030 drops by 1,803,966 t under the natural growth trajectory and by 2,417,778 t under the high-quality economic growth pathway, whereas it rises by 47,326 t under cultivated land conservation and by 7679 t under ecological conservation. Elevation represents the most crucial driver among the selected variables in clarifying the spatial fluctuation of carbon storage (q = 0.3985), followed by slope (0.3323), mean annual temperature (0.2382), and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) (0.1219). The synergy between elevation and NDVI produces the highest integrated explanatory power (q = 0.4906). These outcomes imply that constraining construction land growth while protecting agricultural and ecological land is vital for preserving and enhancing regional carbon sink potential. Full article
