The effect of surface roughness in laminar flow has been the focus of recent research related to drag reduction. However, although particle transport is governed by laminar flow in most applications, the effect of surface texture on the drag of a sphere has mostly been addressed in the transitional and turbulent regimes. The aim of the present study is to explore the drag behavior of rough spherical micro-particles in laminar flow. The spheres’ roughness has been structured based on a 3D complex Weaire–Phelan model, as well as on a simpler orthogonal lattice one, and quantified as per various definitions. The emerging surface roughness comprises irregular elements in terms of shape and size. The investigation has been performed at Reynolds numbers ranging from 2 to 8. The drag coefficient is found to drop quadratically with increasing roughness. Relative roughness can reduce the total drag on the particle by over 21%. The key physical mechanism is explained by the particles’ surface cavities, which contain recirculating, nearly stagnant fluid, thus creating a self-lubricating effect that reduces skin friction, as the main flow skims over the top without entering the cavities. A reduction in total drag arises when skin friction drag reduction is larger than the increase in form drag. Understanding the drag behavior of spherical particles with irregular surface texture provides new and useful insight into low Reynolds number transport phenomena related to a variety of engineering applications. In the pursuit of sustainable and circular energy sources, this study examines the potential of tire pyrolysis oil (TPO) as a diesel fuel substitute when combined with hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), a second-generation biofuel. At varying TPO-HVO blend percentages, this investigation evaluates engine performance and emissions in relation to critical fuel parameters, including density, viscosity, and lubricity. The high-frequency reciprocating rig (HFRR) method was employed to examine tribological aspects, and a single-cylinder diesel engine was tested under various load conditions. The findings indicated that blends containing up to 30% TPO maintained sufficient lubrication and engine performance to comply with diesel standards, concurrently reducing carbon monoxide and smoke emissions. The increase in TPO proportion resulted in a decrease in cetane number, an increase in NOx emissions, and a rise in viscosity, particularly under full engine load conditions. The utilization of TPO is crucial for converting tire waste into fuel, as it mitigates the accumulation of tire waste and reduces dependence on fossil fuels, despite existing challenges. This study provides critical insights into the efficacy of blending methods and underscores the necessity of additional fuel refining processes, such as cetane enhancement and desulfurization, to facilitate their integration into transportation energy systems. In response to the growing demand for lightweight and high-efficiency industrial equipment, this study addresses the critical issue of lubrication failure in high-speed, heavy-duty gear reducers, which often leads to reduced transmission efficiency and premature mechanical damage. A three-dimensional transient multiphysics-coupled model of oil-jet lubrication is developed based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The model integrates the Volume of Fluid (VOF) multiphase flow method with the shear stress transport (SST) k−ω turbulence model. This framework enables the accurate capture of oil-jet interface fragmentation, reattachment, and turbulence-coupled behavior within the gear meshing region. A parametric study is conducted on oil injection velocities ranging from 20 to 50 m/s to elucidate the coupling mechanisms between geometric configuration and flow dynamics, as well as their impacts on oil film evolution, energy dissipation, and thermal management. The results reveal that the proposed method can reveal the dynamic evolution characteristics of the gear injection lubrication. Adopting an appropriately moderate injection velocity (30 m/s) improves oil film coverage and continuity, with the lubricant transitioning from discrete droplets to a dense wedge-shaped film within the meshing zone. Optimal lubrication performance is achieved at this velocity, where oil shear-carrying capacity and kinetic energy utilization efficiency are maximized, while excessive turbulent kinetic energy dissipation is effectively suppressed. Dynamic monitoring data at point P further corroborate that a well-tuned injection velocity stabilizes lubricant-velocity fluctuations and improves lubricant oil distribution, thereby promoting consistent oil film formation and more efficient heat transfer. The proposed closed-loop collaborative framework—comprising model initialization, numerical solution, and post-processing—together with the introduced quantitative evaluation metrics, provides a solid theoretical foundation and engineering reference for structural optimization, energy control, and thermal reliability design of gearbox lubrication systems. This work offers important insights into precision lubrication of high-speed transmissions and contributes to the sustainable, green development of industrial machinery. Full article

Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) electrospun fiber membranes possess unique micro-nano structures and excellent properties. Adjusting their wettability enables the directional transportation of lubricants. A conventional method for adjusting porosity and wettability involves inducing membrane shrinkage using absolute ethanol and heat treatment. However, the shrinkage response and the corresponding changes in the tensile properties of TPU fiber membranes after induction remain unclear, limiting their applications. Thus, in this study, after being peeled off, the samples were first left to stand at room temperature (RT) for 24 h to release residual stress and stabilize their dimensions, and then treated with dehydrated ethanol at RT and high temperature, respectively, with their shrinkage behaviors observed and recorded. The results showed that TPU nanofiber membranes shrank significantly in absolute ethanol, and the degree of shrinkage was temperature-dependent. The shrinkage rates were 2% and 4% in dehydrated ethanol at room temperature and high temperature, respectively, and heating increased the shrinkage effect by 200%. These findings prove that absolute ethanol causes TPU fibers to shrink, and high temperatures further promote shrinkage. However, although the strong synergistic effect of heat and solvent accelerates shrinkage, it may induce internal structural defects, resulting in the deterioration of mechanical properties. The contraction response induced by anhydrous ethanol stimulation can be used to directionally adjust the local density and modulus of TPU nanofiber membranes, thereby changing the wettability. This approach provides new opportunities for applications in areas such as medium transportation and interface friction reduction in lubrication systems. Full article

Many low-temperature applications, such as rocket engines and liquefied natural gas (LNG) transport pumps, necessitate ultra-low-temperature operational environments. In these conditions, the properties of lubricating oils and greases are significantly influenced by temperature, leading to the widespread adoption of solid lubrication. Currently, there is no international research regarding the influence of bearing coatings on the subsurface stress distribution in raceways. The Lundberg–Palmgren (L-P) theory states that subsurface stress variations govern bearing lifespan. Therefore, this paper utilizes existing formulas and Python programming to calculate the subsurface stress field of the inner raceway in a MoS2 solid-lubricated angular contact ball bearing. Furthermore, it analyzes the impacts of factors such as coating material properties, slide-to-roll ratio, traction coefficient, and load on its subsurface stress field. The results reveal that for solid-lubricated ball bearings, as the load increases, the maximum subsurface stress shifts closer to the center of the contact area, and the maximum subsurface shear stress becomes more concentrated. As the traction coefficient increases, the stress on the XZ-plane side increases and its position moves closer to the surface, while the opposite trend is observed on the other side. Additionally, the maximum value of the subsurface von Mises stress is approximately 0.64P0, and the maximum value of the orthogonal shear stress component τyz in the subsurface is approximately 0.25P0. Efficient lubrication lowers friction, wear, and energy losses in automotive drivetrain components. Advanced lubricants are key to sustainable transportation performance, durability, and efficiency. This study analyzes the tribological performance of Group III base oil with CuO and ZnO nanoadditive mixtures. These additives enhance the performance of Group III base oils, making them highly relevant for automotive lubricant applications. An Optimol SRV5 tribometer performed ball-on-disk sliding contact tests with 100Cr6 steel specimens subjected to a 50 N force and a temperature of 100 °C. The test settings are designed to mimic the boundary and mixed lubrication regimes commonly seen in the automobile industry. During the tests, the effect of nanoparticles on friction was measured. Microscopic wear analysis was performed on the worn specimens. The results demonstrate that adding 0.3 wt% CuO nanoparticles to Group III base oil achieves a 19% reduction in dynamic friction and a 47% decrease in disk wear volume compared to additive-free oil. Notably, a 2:1 CuO-to-ZnO mixture produced synergy, delivering up to a 27% friction reduction and a 54% decrease in disk wear. The results show the synergistic effect of CuO and ZnO in reducing friction and wear on specimens. This study highlights the potential of nanoparticles for lubricant development and automotive applications. Full article

Water-lubricated bearings (WLB), due to their pollution-free nature and low noise, are increasingly becoming critical components in aerospace, marine applications, high-speed railway transportation, precision machine tools, etc. However, in practice, water-lubricated bearings suffer severe friction and wear due to low-viscosity water, harsh conditions, and contaminants like sediment, which can compromise the lubricating film and shorten their lifespan. The implementation of micro-textures has been demonstrated to improve the tribological performance of water-lubricated bearings to a certain extent, leading to their widespread adoption for enhancing the frictional dynamics of sliding bearings. The shape, dimensions (including length, width, and depth), and distribution of these micro-textures have a significant influence on the frictional performance. Therefore, this study aims to explore the coupling effect of different micro-texture shapes and distributions on the frictional performance of water-lubricated sliding, using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. The results indicate that strategically arranging textures across multiple regions can enhance the performance of the bearing. Specifically, placing linear groove textures in the outlet of the divergent zone and triangular textures in the divergent zone body maximize improvements in the load-carrying capacity and frictional performance. This specific configuration increases the load-carrying capacity by 7.3% and reduces the friction coefficient by 8.6%. Overall, this study provided critical theoretical and technical insights for the optimization of WLB, contributing to the advancement of clean energy technologies and the extension of critical bearing service life. Understanding the mechanical behavior of frozen clay subgrade soils was essential for ensuring the safe and stable operation of transportation lines. However, the influence of remolding water content w on this behavior remained unclear. To address this gap, this study examined the effect of w through monotonic triaxial testing. Three typical remolding water contents (w = 19%, 27.5% and 35%) and three confining pressures (σ3 = 200 kPa, 700 kPa and 1200 kPa) were considered. Results showed that the mechanical behavior of frozen clay soils displayed a clear dependence on w, which was controlled by microstructural evolution. As w increased, the shear strength qmax, resilient modulus E0 and cohesion c increased, which resulted from the progressive development of ice bonding within the shear plane. A threshold w value was found at wopt = 27.5%, marking a structural transition and separating the variations of qmax, E0 and c into two regimes. When w ≤ 27.5%, the soil fabric was controlled by clay aggregates. As w increased, the growth in ice cementation was confined within these aggregates, leading to limited increase in qmax, E0 and c. However, as w exceeded 27.5%, the soil fabric transitioned into a homogeneous matrix of dispersed clay particles. In this case, increasing w greatly promoted the development of an interconnected ice cementation network, thus significantly facilitating the increase in qmax, E0 and c. The friction angle φ decreased with w increasing, primarily due to the lubrication effect caused by the growing ice. In addition, the enhanced lubrication effect in the clay particle-dominated fabric (w > 27.5%) resulted in a larger reduction rate of φ. Regarding Poisson’s ratio v and dilation angle ψ, the w increase led to growth in both parameters. This phenomenon could be explained by the increased involvement of solid ice into the soil structure. Full article

This study presents a bioinspired phase-change transparent flexible heater (PTFH) for programmable droplet manipulation under ultralow voltage. By embedding a self-junctioned copper nanowire network into paraffin-infused, porous PVDF-HFP gel matrices, the PTFH achieves rapid, non-contact, and reversible control of microdroplet mobility. The PTFH can be bent or tailored into diverse shapes (e.g., V/X configurations), enabling multidirectional droplet transport. Under ultralow voltage actuation (<1 V), the surface of PTFH melts the phase-change lubricant within 2 s, switching surface wettability from high adhesion (Wenzel state) to low adhesion (SLIPS state). By combining Laplace pressure and temperature gradients (up to 22 °C/mm), drive droplets at ~2.0 mm/s over distances of ~13.9 mm. Programmable droplet coalescence, curved-surface transport, and a microreactor design for batch reactions were also demonstrated. The PTFH exhibits excellent transparency (89% when activated), mechanical flexibility, and cyclic stability, offering a versatile platform for microreactors, microengines, and smart windows. Polymer co-extrusion experiments are described simulating the dynamics of two different magmas (e.g., silicic and mafic having different viscosities) flowing simultaneously in a vertical volcanic pipe or conduit which results in the effusion of composite lava domes on the surface. These experiments, involving geologically realistic conduit length-to-diameter aspect ratios of 130:1 or 380:1, demonstrate that co-extrusion of magmas having different viscosities can explain not only the observed normal zoning observed in planar dikes and the pipelike conduits that evolve from dikes but also the compositional layering of effused lava domes. The new results support earlier predictions, based on observations of induced core-annular flow (CAF), that dike and conduit zoning along with dome layering are found to depend on the viscosity contrast of the non-Newtonian (shear-thinning) magmas. Any magma properties creating viscosity differences, such as crystal content, bubble content, water content and temperature may also give rise to the CAF regime. Additionally, codependent flow behavior involving the silicic and mafic magmas may play a significant role in modifying the nature of volcanic eruptions. For example, lubrication of the flow by an annulus of a more mafic, lower-viscosity component allows a more viscous but more volatile-charged magma to be injected rapidly to greater vertical distances along a dike into a lower pressure regime that initiates exsolving of a gas phase, further assisting ascent to the surface. The rapid ascent of magmas exsolving volatiles in a dike or conduit is associated with explosive silicic eruptions. Full article

Hyaluronic acid (or hyaluronan) is a polysaccharide with therapeutic applications in dentistry due to its lubricating, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties. This study evaluates the diffusion, conductivity, and viscosity of the sodium salt of HyH (that is, NaHy) with different molecular weights (124 kDa, 245 kDa, and 1800 kDa) in artificial saliva at pH 2.3, 4, 5, 6.8, and 8. Using the Taylor dispersion technique at 298.15 K, diffusion coefficients were determined and analyzed based on Fick’s second law equation. Results showed that NaHy diffusion was higher at acidic pH, particularly at pH 2.3, and decreased at pH 8, likely due to structural compaction in acidic conditions and expansion in alkaline media. The higher molecular weight of this polysaccharide exhibited greater diffusion and conductivity, suggesting an extended conformation that enhances mobility. These findings indicate that both pH and molecular weight significantly influence NaHy transport properties. Optimizing these parameters may enhance HA’s bioavailability and effectiveness in topical oral applications, improving its therapeutic potential in treating periodontal and oral conditions. A novel composite groove array surface was fabricated using femtosecond laser ablation technology to enhance self-replenishment capability. Initially, the driving efficiency of droplets on the composite groove array surface was tested using a high-speed droplet transportation system, characterizing the effect of this surface on lubricant backflow characteristics. Simultaneously, measurement of lubricating film thickness was utilized to explore the lubrication enhancement effect of the composite groove array surface on oil film formation under reciprocating motion. The multidimensional gradient wettability, engineered through the composite groove array surface, demonstrated excellent efficiency in lubricant replenishment within the lubrication track. Oil droplet transportation testing demonstrated that the composite groove array surface, which induced gradient wettability at the boundary, attained a maximum driving speed of 123.5 mm/s. This innovative design significantly reduced the barriers associated with lubricant backflow, particularly those induced by cavitation expansion during high-frequency reciprocating motion. Furthermore, the results demonstrated that the film-forming capabilities of this composite groove array surface were enhanced, thereby optimizing the overall lubrication performance. Full article

Focusing on the difficulty of lubrication in the scavenging port area of a cylinder liner of an actual marine two-stroke diesel engine, the transportation of interface lubricating oil was studied. In this paper, a biomimetic fish scale texture composed of fan-shaped and arc-shaped curves is designed, and the numerical simulation model is established according to this texture. Through simulation research, the variation rules of pressure distribution, interfacial velocity, and outlet volume flow rate on the biomimetic fish scale texture surface at different velocities and temperatures are obtained. Moreover, the biomimetic fish scale texture is machined on the surface of a reciprocating friction pair by laser etching, and the oil transport speed of the interface is tested under different conditions. The results show that the existence of the biomimetic fish scale texture on the friction pair can effectively improve the pressure difference between interfaces during reciprocating motion. The pressure difference enhances the flow properties of interfacial lubricating oil, thereby improving its mass transport capacity. In addition, increasing the movement speed and oil temperature can increase the oil transport speed of interfacial lubricating oil. The results of the experiment suggest that, under continuous and discontinuous interface conditions, compared with a friction pair without texture, the improvement rate of the lubricating oil transport speed at the interface of the friction pair with the biomimetic fish scale texture can reach 40.7% and 69.1%, respectively. This study investigates the influence of idler roller diameter on indentation rolling resistance and idler rotating resistance in belt conveying systems, crucial for long-distance bulk material transport. It encompasses the impact on grease-lubricated rolling bearings, grease-filled labyrinth seals, and lip seals, with the aim of optimizing energy consumption. Experimental devices were used to refine predictive models, demonstrating that larger idler rollers reduce both resistances, leading to a 40% to 55% efficiency improvement. The study offers a detailed breakdown of friction losses under various operating conditions and provides valuable insights for lubricant selection and system enhancement, highlighting the significance of idler roller diameter in reducing energy costs and enhancing system performance. In the cold chamber high pressure die casting process (CC-HPDC) for light alloys, the piston lubricants play a key role in protecting the piston tip from wearing and ensure adequate seal with the shot sleeve. However, during the production process, the pouring of overheated aluminum alloy melt into the shot sleeve would lead to evaporation and burning of the lubricants once in contact with the piston tip. The burning products, however, would form gas and non-metallic inclusions in the melt which would be transported and injected into the die area and finally trapped in the castings, all of which would affect the mechanical properties of the as-cast samples and deteriorate the product quality. To further investigate this issue, a pilot scale HPDC machine is used and the lubricant burning issue is studied based on material characterization and numerical modelling. The chemical composition, size, and morphology of the burned products are observed using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). In order to better explore the issue of lubricant combustion discovered in the experiment, a finite element model describing the entire HPDC process is established and the burning, motion, and trapping of the lubricant are calculated. The final distribution of the burned products such as gas and non-metallic inclusions are predicted and their influence on final solidification quality of the as-cast products under various process parameters are analyzed qualitatively. Finally, a slow shot velocity range of 0.4–0.6 m/s and an acceleration profile that ramps up to 0.3 m/s over 0–370 mm of the shot sleeve proved to be the most effective in reducing air entrainment and oxide inclusions to alleviate the burning of lubricant on final product quality.
