Veterinary Medicine Students’ Perceptions of Hunting and Game Meat: A Cross-Sectional Survey at a Portuguese University

Background: Veterinarians are pivotal to wildlife health surveillance and game-meat safety, yet these topics receive limited emphasis in many veterinary curricula. Understanding students’ perceptions can inform targeted educational improvements. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional, anonymous online survey among students enrolled in the Integrated Master’s in Veterinary Medicine at ICBAS-UP (Portugal). The questionnaire covered sociodemographic, meat and game-meat consumption, perceived appeal of working with game animals, and multi-select views on hunting, game-meat consumption and the veterinary role. We computed descriptive statistics and tested associations between categorical variables using Pearson’s Chi-square or Fisher’s exact tests (Monte Carlo correction when appropriate). Results: Of the 391 eligible students, 152 responded (39%). The majority (76%) associated hunting with veterinary inspection of game meat and research in epidemiology and emerging diseases, and many (72%) recognized as core roles monitoring the health of game animals and the contribution to public health and environmental sustainability. Significant associations included: prior game-meat consumption with finding game animals appealing/interest in learning more; year of enrolment with recognising hunting as an economic activity and acknowledging veterinary inspection and public health contributions; and perceiving game animals as appealing with associating hunting with population control (all p < 0.05; Cramer’s V indicating weak–moderate effects). Conclusions: Students show awareness of veterinary roles in game-animal health and meat inspection, but interest in working with game animals is low and knowledge gaps persist (e.g., inspection of game meat). Findings support curricular integration of wildlife health, game-meat inspection and One Health. Multicenter studies and evaluation of educational interventions are warranted. Full article

Forensic age estimation is a fundamental component of biological profiling for unidentified skeletal remains, particularly in mass casualty incidents where specimens are frequently fragmented or incomplete. This review evaluates the diagnostic utility of craniofacial suture closure—specifically across four facial regions—as a non-invasive methodology for age determination in adults. By analyzing the predictable fusion patterns of ectocranial and endocranial sutures, forensic practitioners can derive approximate age ranges when postcranial indicators are absent or unreliable. Despite its utility, the reliability of suture-based estimation remains a subject of academic debate. The rate of closure is influenced by a complex interplay of environmental and biological factors, including nutritional status, hormonal influences, and mechanical loading. Historically, the method has faced criticism due to significant inter-individual variability and limited sample sizes in cadaveric studies. To improve precision and novel detail, this review explores the integration of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). These tools can process extensive cranial datasets to identify subtle morphological patterns that may elude human observation. While craniofacial suture analysis remains an essential resource in the forensic toolkit, its accuracy is contingent upon accounting for multi-factorial biological factors. The authors emphasize the necessity for further external validation across diverse global populations to ensure the generalizability and refinement of the technique in forensic medicine and osteology. Background/Objectives: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), recently redefined as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), represents a growing global health burden closely linked to obesity, insulin resistance, and dietary patterns. Despite intense drug-development efforts, effective and widely approved pharmacological therapies remain limited. Methods: In this work, we systematically evaluated the quality of clinical evidence supporting currently proposed pharmacological treatments for MASLD/MASLD using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) framework, focusing on phase III and IV clinical trials. Results: Our analysis demonstrates that overall quality of evidence for most pharmacological agents ranges from very low to moderate, primarily due to imprecision and suspected publication bias. Conclusions: Overall, our findings reinforce that, in the current therapeutic landscape, pharmacological therapies should be reserved for carefully selected patients and interpreted in the context of limited evidence certainty. Pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidine is a privileged fused heterocyclic scaffold that has attracted considerable attention in medicinal chemistry due to its diverse biological activities. Herein, we report an efficient synthesis strategy for the preparation of the pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidine-based natural toyocamycin aglycone and pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidine derivatives. The synthesis of toyocamycin aglycone features a key benzylamine nucleophilic substitution followed by a palladium-catalyzed cyanation reaction. From a key intermediate derived from this route, nineteen new pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidine derivatives were rapidly synthesized via key Suzuki–Miyaura coupling and amine nucleophilic substitution reactions. Their cytotoxic activities were evaluated against Huh-7 and HepG liver cancer cell lines. Most derivatives were inactive after 24 h. However, 28a–28c, 28e and 28f exhibited moderate cytotoxicity with IC50 values ranging from 5.7 to 62.6 μM. Among them, compound 28e displayed the highest potency against HepG cells, with IC50 values of 5.7 μM. Compared with normal HEK293 cells, it showed a selectivity index (SI) of 3.60 against HepG cells. Preliminary structure-activity relationship analysis suggested that incorporation of a cyclopropyl group further improves antitumor activity. Full article

The identity of oregano used as a medicinal plant and culinary spice remains controversial due to frequent confusion between Origanum vulgare L., native to the spontaneous flora of Romania (mainly subsp. vulgare), and chemically distinct oregano taxa commercially marketed under the generic name “oregano”, often associated with phenolic-rich chemotypes attributed to O. vulgare subsp. hirtum (Link) A.Terracc. The present study aimed to clarify the morphological and chemotaxonomic differences between wild Romanian populations of O. vulgare and commercially available oregano-type plant material, using authenticated O. vulgare subsp. hirtum as a comparative reference. Comparative botanical analysis was performed on wild and cultivated material, followed by thin-layer chromatography (TLC) screening and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) analysis of essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation. Morphological examination revealed stable differences between wild O. vulgare subsp. vulgare and commercially sourced material in stem habit, leaf morphology, inflorescence structure, corolla coloration, and aroma. TLC screening showed the absence of phenolic derivatives in extracts from wild O. vulgare subsp. vulgare and authenticated O. vulgare subsp. hirtum, while intense thymol-related zones were detected exclusively in plants derived from commercial seeds labeled as O. vulgare. GC–MS analysis confirmed these findings, demonstrating the absence of phenolic monoterpenes in wild populations and their high abundance, particularly thymol and carvacrol, in commercial samples. These results highlight significant discrepancies between authentic wild oregano and commercially marketed plant material, emphasizing the need for rigorous botanical authentication in ethnobotanical, phytochemical, and pharmacological research. Bacterial cellulose (BC) has emerged as a structurally robust, biologically compatible, and highly adaptable biomaterial with significant potential for next-generation wound-care technologies. Its nanofibrillar, extracellular-matrix-like architecture provides exceptional moisture retention, mechanical stability, and conformability, enabling BC to function as an active scaffold rather than a traditional dressing. Advances in chemical modification, composite engineering, and bioactive functionalization, including antimicrobial metals, chitosan, biosurfactants, enzymes, and growth factors, have expanded BC’s therapeutic capabilities. Emerging smart BC dressings integrate biosensors, stimuli-responsive drug release, and 3D-printed architectures tailored to patient-specific wound geometries. Parallel developments in artificial intelligence (AI) are transforming BC production by optimizing bioprocessing, guiding genetic engineering, reducing culture media costs, and enabling real-time quality control, thereby improving scalability and industrial feasibility. These combined innovations position BC as a multifunctional, immunologically instructive, and digitally integrated platform for advanced regenerative wound care. This review reframes BC within the contemporary pathophysiology of chronic wounds, emphasizing its roles in immunomodulation, macrophage polarization, angiogenesis, mechanotransduction, and the disruption of mixed bacterial–fungal biofilms that characterize diabetic foot ulcers and other non-healing wounds. BC hydrogels typically contain >90–99% water and exhibit tensile strengths exceeding 200 MPa, enabling robust mechanical performance in wound environments. Advances in BC composites have demonstrated antimicrobial reductions of 3–5 log units against common chronic-wound pathogens. Full article

Ribosomes are widely recognized as large intracellular macromolecular complexes responsible for protein synthesis. However, in recent years, numerous studies have revealed that ribosomal proteins possess non-canonical functions beyond translation, including roles in cell fate regulation, development, and disease. This review outlines emerging concepts surrounding the extracellular functions of ribosomes, with a particular focus on ribosome-induced cellular plasticity and transdifferentiation. Our studies have demonstrated that the incorporation of exogenous ribosomes reprograms somatic cells into a multipotent state and promotes differentiation into multiple lineages. These findings represent an alternative perspective to the conventional view of ribosomes as merely translational components. Furthermore, we discuss the biological significance of factors secreted by ribosome-incorporated cells by integrating the paracrine hypothesis with ribosome-mediated cell fate conversion. Finally, we explore the potential applications of ribosomes in regenerative medicine and cell-cultured food production. By redefining ribosomes as active regulators of cellular identity, this review provides a conceptual framework for understanding ribosome-driven cell fate regulation and its potential applications in sustainable biotechnology. Background: Empathy and a positive attitude are essential competencies in healthcare, particularly when caring for older adults. Their development is therefore a critical component of undergraduate dental education. This study evaluates whether using aging simulation suits can enhance empathy and improve attitudes toward older adults among dental students. Methods: Third- to fifth-year dental students from the University Clinics of Dental Medicine in Geneva, Switzerland, participated in an aging-simulation experience using the GERonTologic age simulation suit (GERT®), which replicates age-related physical impairments. Students performed tasks in four predefined scenarios, both with and without the suit. Changes in empathy and attitudes were measured using the Jefferson Scale of Empathy-Health Profession Students’ version (JSE-HPS) and the Geriatric Attitudes Scale (GAS) questionnaires. Perceptions of the intervention were evaluated using a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire. Results: Sixty-three undergraduate students (45 women, 18 men), aged 20–53 years, participated. The suit significantly impaired their physical abilities (p < 0.001). Empathy improved post-intervention (p = 0.038), particularly in the third-year group. Attitude towards older adults improved significantly post-intervention (p = 0.001), mainly among fourth- and fifth-year students. All participants endorsed the positive value of the intervention. Conclusions: The intervention’s impact varied by clinical experience: empathy increased mainly in less experienced students, while attitudes improved in those with more exposure to elderly care. This suggests that the timing of simulation within the curriculum influences outcomes. Aging simulation represents a promising educational approach to enhance empathy, improve attitudes toward older adults, and prepare dental students for the clinical and psychosocial aspects of geriatric care. Tissue repair is a finely organized process that progresses via a series of phases, including hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling, which are coordinated by immune–stromal interactions. Aging profoundly dysregulates these processes through mechanisms such as immunosenescence and inflammaging, cellular senescence, chronic inflammation, and extracellular matrix alterations, ultimately contributing to typical age-related progression. This review discusses the immune mechanisms that govern physiological tissue healing, as well as the age-related perturbations that lead to ulcerative and fibrotic diseases. It also highlights the potential application of extracellular vesicles (EVs), both mammalian and plant-derived, as a stable and low-immunogenicity mediator to modulate and re-establish repair homeostasis. Translational hurdles such as EV standardization, dosing, safety assessment, and manufacturing are critically discussed to promote their use in geroscience, regenerative medicine, and dermatology. UV radiation causes health effects and repeated excessive sun exposure during childhood increases the risk of skin cancer in adulthood. The French region of Occitanie combines conditions conducive to sun exposure with a wide range of healthcare services. The study aims to describe temporal variations related to sun overexposure and patient characteristics, and evaluate the relevance of each data source. We conducted a retrospective analysis (2019–2022) on pharmacy sales, emergency care provided by SOS Médecins (SOSM), and emergency departments (EDs). More than 220,000 customers purchased products associated with sun overexposure, while 71 SOSM procedures and 417 ED visits were recorded. The activity is clearly seasonal, but remains five to ten times higher for pharmacies than for other sources. About 80% of ED patients were under 40 years of age, while 50% lived within 20 km of the consultation location. The impacts on healthcare systems vary, and each provides complementary insights into care related to sun overexposure. Increases in pharmacy sales are observed as early as spring, underscoring the need to strengthen prevention messaging from the start of the season. The study confirms the value of pharmacy sales data for assessing the impact of sun exposure, but ED or SOSM data enable real-time monitoring and patient characterization. Full article

Particulate matter (PM) is a complex mixture of airborne solid particles and liquid droplets originating from various environmental sources, and it has been implicated in the initiation, development, and progression of pulmonary inflammation and respiratory diseases. However, the underlying associated molecular mechanisms remain unclear. Adenophora divaricate Franch. & Sav. (AD) is a medicinal herb classified within the Campanulaceae family and genus Adenophora, with a broad geographic distribution across East Asia, including Korea, Asia, and Russia. In this study, we investigated the mechanisms underlying the effects of AD on PM-induced lung inflammation in both PM-stimulated RAW264.7 cells and PM-exposed mice. Considering that the reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated thioredoxin-interacting protein (TXNIP) and NOD-like receptor pyrin domain containing (NLRP3) inflammasome pathway plays a role in PM-induced inflammatory responses, we focused on determining whether AD exerts its anti-inflammatory effects through modulation of this signaling pathway. The anti-inflammatory properties of the methanolic extract of AD were evaluated using PM-stimulated RAW264.7 cells and PM-exposed mice. PM was administered intranasally to mice for 7 days, whereas AD or dexamethasone was orally administered for the same duration. AD treatment significantly attenuated pulmonary inflammation, as evidenced by reduced inflammatory cell counts and decreased cytokine levels in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. In addition, AD decreased oxidative stress marker (ROS and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances) while increasing glutathione content, leading to suppression of TXNIP/NLRP3 inflammasome expression. Histopathological analysis revealed a marked alleviation of inflammatory responses in lung tissue, characterized by diminished inflammatory cell infiltration and reduced alveolar wall thickening. Lophatherum gracile Brongn. (L. gracile) has been utilized as a food or medicinal plant for a long time. A series of chemical and spectroscopic methods was used to characterize the extracted and purified L. gracile polysaccharide (LGP). Its in vivo antitumor activity in the H22 tumor-bearing mice model was studied. LGP has a molecular weight of 1.42 × 106 Da and is mainly composed of arabinose (Ara), galactose (Gal), xylose (Xyl), and other monosaccharides. NMR spectra suggest that LGP may be composed of 1,3-β-Galp and 1,3,6-β-Galp main chains, and a side chain formed by a 1,5-α-Araf short chain. The termini are composed of T-α-Araf, while [→4) -α-GalpA-(1→2)-α-Rhap-(1→] are attached to the backbone as short side chains, and the other monosaccharides are an arabinogalactan composed of the termini. SEM and AFM revealed that LGP presents a lamellar morphology with smooth surfaces and notable molecular aggregation. The Congo red assay, CD spectroscopy, and XRD collectively indicated the absence of a triple helix conformation and an overall amorphous structure in LGP. Compared with the model group, LGP treatment improved body responses, immune organs, and SOD and MDA levels. The tumor cell apoptosis rate in the high-dose LGP group was 50.0%. In the distribution of the tumor cell cycle, the proportions of the S phase were 29.1% and 41.1% in the low-dose LGP and high-dose LGP groups, respectively, compared with 12.2% in the model group. These results suggest that LGP exhibits preliminary antitumor activity, indicating its potential as a candidate for further cancer research. Full article

Picnomon acarna (L.) Cass. is a Mediterranean medicinal plant with limited phytochemical and bioactivity characterisation. In this study, methanolic extracts obtained by maceration (MAC), Soxhlet (SOE), and ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) were comparatively investigated to determine their phytochemical composition and biological potential. Liquid chromatography–electrospray ionisation–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–ESI–MS/MS) analysis identified and quantified 24 phenolic compounds, with hesperidin, chlorogenic acid, and hyperoside as the dominant constituents. The maceration extract exhibited the highest total phenolic content (29.06 mg GAE/g extract) and showed superior antioxidant performance across six complementary assays [2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2′-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), phosphomolybdenum, and ferrous-ion chelation), reflected by the highest relative antioxidant capacity index (RACI = 0.93). Enzyme inhibition assays revealed extraction-dependent activity patterns: Soxhlet and ultrasound extracts demonstrated stronger acetylcholinesterase inhibition (IC50 ≈ 1.23 mg/mL), while Soxhlet extract showed the most potent tyrosinase (AChE) inhibition (IC50 = 1.48 mg/mL). α-Amylase inhibition was comparable among extracts (IC50 = 1.90–2.03 mg/mL). Pearson correlation analysis indicated strong relationships between major phenolics and antioxidant activity. Molecular docking further supported these findings, showing favourable binding affinities of hesperidin, hyperoside, and chlorogenic acid toward α-amylase and acetylcholinesterase, while only chlorogenic acid and hyperoside demonstrated favourable interactions with tyrosinase-related protein-1 (TYRP1), whereas hesperidin did not exhibit a meaningful binding affinity. Overall, the results demonstrate that the extraction strategy significantly influences the phenolic composition and multi-target bioactivity of P. acarna, highlighting its potential as a source of natural antioxidant and enzyme-modulating compounds. Microbial Contamination in Hard-Shell Capsule Traditional Medicines and Health Supplements in Malaysia: GMP Regulatory Oversight and Encapsulation Practices

Introduction: The growing demand for traditional medicines and health supplements (TMHS) in Malaysia has raised concerns regarding microbial contamination in hard-shell capsule products. Despite regulatory oversight, recurring recalls highlight persistent non-compliance with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards. This study examines the risks of microbial contamination, recall patterns, and encapsulation practices among TMHS hard-shell capsule manufacturers in Malaysia. Methods: A cross-sectional approach was employed, comprising a review of regulatory guidelines, analysis of NPRA recall data from 2020 to 2024, and a structured survey of 86 TMHS manufacturers on equipment and production parameters. Results: Review of GMP guidance indicated that greater automation and reduced manual handling in capsule-filling processes help minimise microbial contamination. In line with this, TMHS products were recalled at a rate of 4.73%, more than 4 times the pharmaceutical recall rate (1.09%). Among the 245 TMHS recalls, 68 involved hard-shell capsule products that failed microbial testing, primarily total aerobic microbial count (73.53%). Additionally, manufacturers with 50–100 registered products had significantly higher odds of recall (OR = 10.0, 95% CI: 2.35–42.47). However, no significant associations were found between recall status and equipment type, capsule size, or production frequency. Conclusions: Microbial contamination remains a critical issue in TMHS hard-shell capsule products. Regulatory efforts should focus on medium-scale manufacturers and reinforce risk-based GMP adherence to enhance product safety and public health protection. Full article
