Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers and botulinum toxin remain among the most frequently requested non-surgical esthetic procedures, due to their favorable safety profile and ability to restore volume and improve skin quality. However, variability in product performance and the lack of objective measurement tools remain challenges in clinical practice. This prospective, single-arm, non-randomized pilot study aimed to assess the esthetic efficacy, tolerability, and duration of effect of Sofiderm® HA fillers in Caucasian patients with signs of facial aging, and to explore the correlation between subjective visual grading and instrumental imaging outcomes. Five patients with Griffiths photoaging scores ranging from 4 to 8 were treated with different Sofiderm® formulations. Standardized evaluations were performed at baseline, 2 months, and 9 months using VISIA-CR and PRIMOS 3D optical profilometry. All subjects experienced measurable improvements, with an average 2-point reduction in Griffiths scores at 2 months, maintained at 9 months in most cases. Objective imaging data confirmed enhancements in volume, texture, and surface regularity. No serious adverse events occurred. These findings suggest that Sofiderm® fillers may offer sustained esthetic benefits with a favorable safety profile and demonstrate how integrated digital imaging can enhance treatment evaluation in esthetic dermatology. Background/Objectives: Children with myelomeningocele (MMC) often experience lower extremity muscular contractures, which can impact their functional mobility. While standing programs have demonstrated benefits for children with other neuromuscular conditions, there is limited evidence on their use in ambulatory children with MMC who have joint deformities. This single-subject design study examined the impact of a home-based standing program on two ambulatory children with MMC, focusing on lower extremity muscle flexibility, functional movement quality, gait velocity, and participation in daily activities. Methods: Two children participated in a multi-phase single-subject (ABABA) withdrawal design beginning with the baseline phase and then alternating between the intervention and withdrawal phases. The intervention consisted of 60-minute standing sessions, five days a week, using a sit-to-stand stander (STSS) with support and supervision from a physical therapist (PT) and the parent. Primary outcomes included goniometric passive range of motion (PROM) and 10-Meter Walk Test (10 MWT). Secondary outcomes included the Pediatric Neuromuscular Recovery Scale (Peds NRS) and the Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory Computer Adaptive Test (PEDI-CAT). Results: Improvements in hip and knee muscle flexibility were observed during the intervention phases, with some loss during the withdrawal phase. Functional movement quality improved in both children. Gait velocity and participation in daily activity scores remained stable during intervention phases. Parental feedback reflected increased independence and high engagement with the home program. One child discontinued due to a heel injury, highlighting the need for individualized support. Conclusions: Personalized standing programs may improve muscle flexibility and functional movement quality in ambulatory children with MMC. Further research is warranted to determine the optimal dosing regimen, ensure safety, and assess long-term functional outcomes. Full article

Industrial odour is a common pollution concern raised with local regulatory authorities, with communities citing impacts to their mental health and wellbeing. We performed a systematic review to determine if industrial odours are associated with psychosocial wellbeing in nearby communities. PubMed, Medline, PsycINFO, and Web of Science were searched for peer-reviewed articles published between 2003 and 2023, assessing associations between industrial odour and psychosocial wellbeing (mental health or quality of life). Critical appraisal of the studies was conducted using JBI’s assessment tools. We undertook a narrative synthesis of results. After screening, 13 articles met the inclusion criteria: 11 cross-sectional and 2 longitudinal studies. Sample sizes ranged from 23 to 25,236 participants. Odour exposure was assessed through self-reported measures (intensity, annoyance) and objective measures (proximity to source, odorous chemical concentration). Psychosocial health outcomes included stress, psychological distress, quality of life, depression and anxiety. Of the 13 studies, 11 identified an association between odour exposure and poorer psychosocial wellbeing, with the strongest evidence relating to quality of life. However, the critical appraisal identified quality issues with most studies. The findings suggest that industrial odours may be associated with poorer psychosocial wellbeing for nearby residents, particularly in terms of quality of life. Future research using consistent objective and subjective measures of odour exposure, and prospective data collection, would strengthen the quality of the evidence. Full article

Many individuals suffer from sleep disorders associated with chronic pain, neuroendocrine diseases, and primary sleep disorders. Although cervical manual therapy (CMT) is frequently presumed to enhance sleep quality in clinical settings, evidence regarding its effects on sleep remains inconclusive. We aimed to evaluate the therapeutic effect of CMT and clinical patterns, providing novel insights into its applicability for sleep disorders and further mechanism studies. Methods: A comprehensive literature survey was conducted by using 6 databases through February 2025, to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assessing the effect of CMT on sleep quality as clinical outcome, regardless of primary diseases. Results: Among 1220 initial studies, a total of 10 RCTs involving 552 participants were included. All included RCTs assessed sleep quality using patient-reported outcome measures, while only one study utilized objective assessment via polysomnography. Among them, seven RCTs (70.0%) reported significant improvements in sleep quality that were not dependent on alleviating the primary diseases, with notable enhancements in subjective sleep depth and efficiency rather than sleep duration or latency. Sleep benefits were pronounced in primary sleep disorders, such as obstructive sleep apnea and bruxism, and in sleep disturbances secondary to other conditions, with limited effects in fibromyalgia (FM). Conclusions: With the dysregulated hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis and aberrant serotonergic activity in FM, in this review, we formed a hypothesis and explored the potential effects of CMT on sleep-related serotonergic activity and HPA axis regulation. This scoping review underscores the need for further research to clarify the neuroendocrinological mechanisms underlying CMT’s role in sleep modulation and its potential applications in sleep-related disorders. Older adults are vulnerable to changes in sleep with age. Poor sleep quality is associated with self-reported cognitive changes, which can occur before the onset of objective cognitive decline associated with Mild Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer’s disease. The objective of this study was to examine associations between self-reported sleep complaints, objective sleep quality, and self-reported cognitive changes and their relations to symptoms of depression and anxiety in a group of community-dwelling older adults. Adults aged ≥ 50 without dementia (n = 45) were recruited and completed 1–2 weeks of rest-activity monitoring using a wrist-worn device, underwent a test of global cognitive functioning (Mini-Mental State Examination; MMSE), and completed questionnaires assessing insomnia (Insomnia Severity Index; ISI), subjective sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index; PSQI), self-reported cognitive changes (Cognitive Function Instrument; CFI), and symptoms of depression and anxiety (Beck Depression Inventory-II; BDI-II and Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item assessment; GAD-7). Pearson partial correlations assessed relations among subjective and objective sleep quality, insomnia ratings, CFI ratings, and global cognition, while controlling for BDI-II and GAD-7 ratings. Exploratory analyses examined the correlation between PSQI component scores and CFI ratings and global cognition. Greater ISI (r = 0.50, p ≤ 0.001) ratings significantly correlated with higher CFI scores. PSQI total ratings and actigraphy-based measures (n = 41) did not significantly correlate with CFI scores. Exploratory PSQI subscale analyses revealed that worse subjective sleep quality (r = 0.31, p = 0.048), shorter sleep duration (r = 0.32, p = 0.04), and greater use of sleep medications (r = 0.31, p = 0.048) correlated with higher CFI scores. Poorer sleep quality due to less time spent asleep, fragmented or disturbed sleep, and requiring medications to sleep, may be associated with greater memory concerns. Alternatively, worries about cognition may deleteriously affect sleep. Subjective measures of sleep quality may be useful to identify older adults at increased risk of cognitive decline. Full article

Ambient temperature and thermoregulation influence sleep quality. This study investigated the effects of a temperature-controlled mattress cover on sleep and perceptual outcomes in healthy adults. In a randomised, counterbalanced, crossover design, 34 healthy adults (20 F, 14 M; age, 30 ± 5 y) used a temperature-controlled mattress cover for 14 nights, following ≥3 nights of familiarisation. The temperature feature was on for 7 nights (POD) and off for 7 nights (CON). Sleep was assessed via wrist actigraphy, while heart rate (HR), heart rate variability (HRV), and respiratory rate (RR) were recorded by embedded sensors in the mattress cover. Participants completed daily and weekly questionnaires evaluating sleep quality, thermal comfort, and thermal sensation. Linear mixed models showed significant main effects of condition favouring POD over CON for all daily perceived outcomes (all p < 0.05). A large, significant improvement in perceived sleep quality was observed (p = 0.001, d = 0.92). No significant differences were found in objective sleep metrics or biometric measures (all p ≥ 0.05). A temperature-controlled mattress cover was associated with improved subjective sleep quality and thermal-related perceptions despite minimal changes in objective or biometric outcomes, which may in part reflect expectancy, or placebo effects. Further research is needed to explore whether these perceptual benefits lead to physiological improvements over time. Full article

This study presents a comprehensive assessment of lighting conditions in the Intensive Care Units (ICUs) of two major hospitals in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC): Hospital du Cinquantenaire in Kinshasa and Jason Sendwe Hospital in Lubumbashi. A mixed-methods approach was employed, integrating continuous illuminance monitoring with structured staff surveys to evaluate visual comfort in accordance with the EN 12464-1 standard for indoor workplaces. Objective measurements revealed that more than 52.2% of the evaluated ICU workspaces failed to meet the recommended minimum illuminance level of 300 lux. Subjective responses from healthcare professionals indicated that poor lighting significantly reduced job satisfaction by 40%, lowered self-rated task performance by 30%, decreased visual comfort scores from 4.1 to 2.6 (on a 1–5 scale), and increased the prevalence of well-being symptoms (eye fatigue, headaches) by 25–35%. Frequent complaints included eye strain, glare, and discomfort with posture, with these issues often exacerbated during the rainy season due to reduced natural daylight. The study highlights critical deficiencies in current lighting infrastructure and emphasizes the need for urgent improvements in clinical environments. Moreover, inconsistent energy supply to these healthcare settings also impacts the assurance of visual comfort. To address these shortcomings, the study recommends transitioning to energy-efficient LED lighting, enhancing access to natural light, incorporating circadian rhythm-based lighting systems, enabling individual lighting control at workstations, and ensuring a consistent power supply via the integration of solar inverters to the grid supply. These interventions are essential not only for improving healthcare staff performance and safety but also for supporting better patient outcomes. The findings offer actionable insights for hospital administrators and policymakers in the DRC and similar low-resource settings seeking to enhance environmental quality in critical care facilities. Color grading of boiled shrimp is a critical factor influencing market price, yet the process is usually conducted visually by buyers such as middlemen and processing plants. This subjective practice raises concerns about accuracy, impartiality, and fairness, often resulting in disputes with farmers. To address this issue, this study proposes a standardized and automated grading approach based on image processing and artificial intelligence. The method requires only a photograph of boiled shrimp placed alongside a color grading ruler. The grading process involves two stages: segmentation of shrimp and ruler regions in the image, followed by color comparison. For segmentation, deep learning models based on Mask R-CNN with a Feature Pyramid Network backbone were employed. Four model configurations were tested, using ResNet and ResNeXt backbones with and without a Boundary Loss function. Results show that the ResNet + Boundary Loss model achieved the highest segmentation performance, with IoU scores of 91.2% for shrimp and 87.8% for the color ruler. In the grading step, color similarity was evaluated in the CIELAB color space by computing Euclidean distances in the L (lightness) and a (red–green) channels, which align closely with human perception of shrimp coloration. The system achieved grading accuracy comparable to human experts, with a mean absolute error of 1.2, demonstrating its potential to provide consistent, objective, and transparent shrimp quality assessment. Assessing teaching behavior is essential for improving instructional quality, particularly in Physical Education, where classroom interactions are fast-paced and complex. Traditional evaluation methods such as questionnaires, expert observations, and manual discourse analysis are often limited by subjectivity, high labor costs, and poor scalability. These challenges underscore the need for automated, objective tools to support pedagogical assessment. This study explores and compares the use of Transformer-based language models for the automatic classification of teaching behaviors from real classroom transcriptions. A dataset of over 1300 utterances was compiled and annotated according to the teaching styles proposed in the circumplex approach (Autonomy Support, Structure, Control, and Chaos), along with an additional category for messages in which no style could be identified (Unidentified Style). To address class imbalance and enhance linguistic variability, data augmentation techniques were applied. Eight pretrained BERT-based Transformer architectures were evaluated, including several pretraining strategies and architectural structures. BETO achieved the highest performance, with an accuracy of 0.78, a macro-averaged F1-score of 0.72, and a weighted F1-score of 0.77. It showed strength in identifying challenging utterances labeled as Chaos and Autonomy Support. Furthermore, other BERT-based models purely trained with a Spanish text corpus like DistilBERT also present competitive performance, achieving accuracy metrics over 0.73 and and F1-score of 0.68. These results demonstrate the potential of leveraging Transformer-based models for objective and scalable teacher behavior classification. The findings support the feasibility of leveraging pretrained language models to develop scalable, AI-driven systems for classroom behavior classification and pedagogical feedback. Full article

Background/Objectives: The post-COVID-19 condition frequently includes dysphonia. We aimed to assess objective and subjective voice disorders and short-term responses to multimodal therapy in patients with isolated post-COVID-19 dysphonia. Methods: This retrospective, single-center pre–post study screened 244 post-COVID-19 patients; a subset of 14 with isolated dysphonia underwent standardized assessment at baseline and at 1-month follow-up. Patient-reported outcomes (Voice Handicap Index, VHI; Voice-Related Quality of Life, V-RQOL) and endoscopic evaluation were performed using videolaryngostroboscopy (LVS) and high-speed videoendoscopy (HSV) with kymographic analysis to quantify parameters describing vocal fold oscillations. The treatment included short-term systemic corticosteroids, inhaled corticosteroids, hyaluronic-acid inhalations, and structured voice therapy. Results: At baseline, HSV revealed signs of glottal insufficiency—irregular and asymmetric vocal fold motion, reduced amplitude and pliability, a disrupted mucosal wave, and an increased open quotient. At follow-up, HSV showed increased oscillation, amplitude, and cycle regularity with reduced left–right asymmetry and phase differences; phonovibrograms displayed clearer and more structured patterns. Perturbation indices decreased across jitter and shimmer measures, and the mean fundamental frequency was lower. Improvements in instrumental measures aligned with better VHI and V-RQOL scores. Conclusions: In patients with persistent dysphonia after acute SARS-CoV-2 infection, comprehensive ENT evaluation with instrumental laryngeal assessment is warranted. Short-term multimodal management was associated with improvements in both HSV-derived measures and patient-reported outcomes; confirmation in controlled studies is needed. Full article

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 64 male collegiate handball players completed a 3-day dietary record and a web-based questionnaire assessing eating habits, training load, and the Hooper Index (sleep, muscle soreness, stress, fatigue). Associations between dietary factors and the Hooper Score were examined using partial correlation and multiple regression analyses, adjusted for potential confounders. Results: Mean energy intake (30.1 ± 10.7 kcal/kg/day) and several micronutrient intakes were below recommended levels. Partial correlation analysis revealed that lower intakes of energy and multiple nutrients were significantly associated with poorer well-being (higher Hooper Scores) and more Subjective Health Complaints (SHC). Multiple regression analysis identified consistent dinner timing, greater protein intake (g/kg), more frequent consumption of nutrient-dense snacks, and less frequent consumption of unhealthy snacks as significant independent predictors of better Hooper Scores (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Suboptimal energy and nutrient intakes were common and associated with poorer subjective well-being. Specific eating behaviors, particularly meal regularity, snack quality, and adequate protein intake, emerged as independent predictors of the Hooper Score, offering practical indicators for nutritional assessment and athlete condition monitoring. Background: The growing interest in the field of platelet-rich fibrins has led to the development of novel generations of these concentrates, with one of the newest additions being advanced platelet-rich fibrin plus (A-PRF+). The updated centrifuge protocol utilized for the preparation of A-PRF+ has been shown to provide blood clots with more white blood cells and growth factors trapped in the fibrin matrix, presenting a more homogenous distribution. The objective of this study was to assess the available randomized clinical trials (RCTs), in order to evaluate the effects that the addition of A-PRF+ can have on postoperative quality of life and soft tissue healing after dental surgery. Materials and Methods: To perform a systematic review based on high-quality results, only RCTs were taken into consideration. The search included articles published between 1 January 2014 and 31 December 2024, indexed in the PubMed, Cochrane, Library, Embase, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases. Nine full texts were finally acquired after the screening of articles, from which relevant data were extracted. Results: A-PRF+ positively influenced the postoperative quality of life in patients. The subjective analysis of pain and its management via painkiller intake indicated that, in general, the addition of A-PRF+ into protocols results in less pain, pain that lasts for a shorter time, and pain that is more easily managed through medication, as a lower number of pills was needed to restore comfort. Furthermore, the occurrence of facial swelling and trismus was also reported to be lower in the A-PRF+ groups. As for soft tissue healing, A-PRF+ significantly enhanced the epithelialization process, total wound area reduction, and inflammation in the surrounding tissues. This positive effect was most noticeable at 7- and 14-day follow-ups. The addition of A-PRF+ also had a positive effect on postoperative bleeding by significantly reducing the bleeding time, providing benefits for patients undergoing antiplatelet drug therapy in particular. Conclusions: The addition of A-PRF+ into the surgical protocol can positively enhance the patient’s quality of life, reduce the need for postoperative medication, and improve the patient’s confidence by reducing potential swelling and trismus. A-PRF+ also positively influences soft tissue wound healing, further enhancing the postoperative well-being of patients, and provides an excellent hemostatic effect even in patients that are on antiplatelet drug therapy. Background/Objectives: In today’s society, the use of new technologies in education has become increasingly relevant. In the subject of Physical Education, these tools offer resources to increase motivation and allow for a better academic monitoring of students. However, their use has also generated academic debate. This systematic review aims to analyse the educational impact of the use of new technologies and their effect on mental health and academic performance in Physical Education students. Methods: The PRISMA Statement was used. A literature search was conducted from January 2020 to April 2025 in the databases Web of Science, Scopus, SPORTDiscus and Dialnet. To refine the search process, the following research question was posed, following the PICO model: in Physical Education students, what is the educational effect of the use of digital technology on mental health and academic performance in teaching practice? The Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool was used to assess the quality of the studies analysed. Results: From a total of 897 articles, 27 relevant papers were selected and classified according to: authors, manuscript title, year of publication, population, main objective, type of design, digital tool, results and conclusions. Conclusions: The findings of this systematic review underline the importance of adopting a constructivist approach to the use of technological resources in Physical Education classes, without losing sight of the motor component, competence learning and the mental well-being of students. Background/Objectives: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) during adolescence increases the risk of psychosocial difficulties. To address these challenges, the 10VIDA program was developed to support psychological adjustment, treatment adherence, and quality of life. This study examined socioemotional factors linked to chronic illness adjustment and psychological well-being in adolescents with T1DM, assessing the impact of the 10VIDA intervention. Methods: Adolescents with T1DM participated in two studies: (1) an inter-group design with experimental and control groups assessed pre- and post-intervention, and (2) an intra-subject longitudinal design with three assessments (two pre-intervention and one post-intervention). All participants completed the 10VIDA intervention delivered online through seven sessions: five targeted adolescents with T1DM, while two included primary caregivers. The program’s main objective was to enhance well-being and quality of life. Results: Girls reported higher anxiety and depression, while boys showed greater self-esteem and emotional well-being. The experimental group experienced significant reductions in discomfort, anxiety, depression, and perceived illness threat, alongside improvements in self-esteem and psychological well-being. Intra-subject analysis also revealed increased well-being and decreased discomfort after intervention. Conclusions: The 10VIDA program effectively addressed socioemotional challenges in adolescents with T1DM and reshaping illness perception. These findings underscore the importance of integrated psychological support to improve adjustment and quality of life in chronic illness during adolescence. Full article

Nutritional Status Assessment Using the Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA) in Individuals with Colorectal Cancer Undergoing Chemotherapy Regimens

Background/Objectives: Colorectal cancer (CRC) has high prevalence and mortality, with a high frequency of malnutrition during chemotherapy (60–70%). Malnutrition reduces treatment tolerance, quality of life, and survival. The Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA) is effective in detecting it, but its use is not systematic. This study aims to analyze the prevalence and degrees of malnutrition in CRC patients undergoing active chemotherapy, using the PG-SGA, and to propose its systematic implementation in oncology care protocols. Methods: Observational, cross-sectional, and descriptive study in patients with stage III–IV CRC receiving FOLFOX, XELOX, or irinotecan regimens. Nutritional status was assessed with PG-SGA and body composition by bioimpedance. Results: The study includes 91 patients. A total of 45.05% of patients required intensive nutritional intervention, 39.56% needed dietary and pharmacological measures, 10.99% required health education, and only 4.4% did not require intervention. FOLFOX was significantly associated with taste alterations (p < 0.001), nausea (p = 0.020), unpleasant odors, and eating problems; XELOX with diarrhea (p = 0.009) and xerostomia (p = 0.038). Irinotecan was related to poorer functional capacity (p = 0.042). Oxaliplatin was linked to loss of appetite (p = 0.034) and unpleasant odors (p = 0.035). Older age correlated with a greater need for intensive interventions. Conclusions: The study shows a high nutritional risk in oncology patients, particularly in those with colorectal cancer undergoing FOLFOX treatment, associated with symptoms that impair intake and functional capacity. The systematic implementation of nutritional screening from the onset of treatment, using tools such as the PG-SGA and GLIM criteria, is essential for early detection and individualized management, improving therapy tolerance, clinical outcomes, and quality of life.
